Making Digital Photos Look Vintage: Adding a White Border Trim

Remember when photos were developed and printed with a white bordered trim around the edges? Whether or not you do, we now have the luxury of going back in time and recreating those cool, old fashion-looking photographs! Learn this digital trick and give those modern Digital Photos a fun, Vintage-makeover!

Remember, Digital Scrapbooking Fans, we strongly recommend that you complete the Digital Scrapbooks and More Getting Started Series for Photoshop or Photoshop Element first, which will make you comfortable working with the software, as well as some of the techniques or tools we may review but don’t explain in detail.

Follow these simple instructions for making your Photos have a White Trim!

Step 1: Open up your graphic program like Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.

Then, In Photoshop OR Photoshop Elements, add a Digital Photo to a Digital Paper by using the “drag and drop” method.

Follow these Steps!

Step 2: Arrange the Digital Photo on your digital scrapbooking paper.

Size it to be about the size you want.

Step 3: Click on the Color Picker Chip at the Bottom of the Tool Bar

Select White as the Foreground Color

Step 4: Click once on the digital photo.

Photoshop Elements Users: Go to: Edit > Stroke (Outline) Selection
Photoshop Users: Go to: Edit > Stroke

Step 5: A pop up will appear In the Width Category, type: 55 px (#1) Click on the circle next to the Inside Option (#2) And click on the OK button (#3)

Step 6: You have now added a Vintage-looking White Trim Border Around your photo! Make the final adjustments to position and size.

BONUS TIP:
Duplicate your Photo to make it look like you have several photos rested on your Digital Scrapbooking Page too!

The final touch: Add a Drop Shadow to each Photo for a more realistic-effect.

Try this simple but fun way to make your photos have a white border around them!

Working in an elementary school this past two years has really opened my eyes to the ups and downs that children face each and every day. They enter the school building with big bright eyes, nervous smiles, tears running down their cheeks, and arms loaded to their limits. Each child, each little precious one, comes with their own little personality, abilities, and emotional limits. As parents we trust in the educators that we turn our children over to day after day, to pick up where we left off. My children, I am lucky enough to report, enter a caring environment each day. They are lifted from their lowest lows to their highest heights by the teachers and staff members that they come in contact with. For this I am grateful as I realize that these people often spend more time in the day than I do with my children.

So as I took pictures of the kids in their new backpacks and tennis shoes this year, the thought crossed my mind that I need to get a better “picture” of what going back to school looks like to my children. For example, as I create a back to school scrapbook page for them shouldn’t I get a picture of the people who greet them each day as they enter the school parking lot? I want them to remember Mrs. Hanson and Ms. Quinn who walk out to greet them as they cross the road each morning.  How about Mrs. Lucky? No one will ever forget her. She is the first face they see if they come in through the wrong door in the morning. Undistinguishable by a small child, yet any adult that knows her would notice that as she scoots them back out the door in the right direction, she has a giggle held back in her throat that is waiting to explode into a laugh because she thinks they are so darn cute. Oh, and they also have to face her and receive a tardy slip when they are late. It’s inevitable, she will give them the slip, tell them to hurry to class, and then call after them on a first name basis, “have a great day”! I can’t go on without mentioning Mrs. Buckley.  She’s the lady in the office that knows everything. If a child needs to call their mom or missed the bus, wants a band-aid, or simply can’t hold still in class, Mrs. Buckley knows what to do. She has the phone number, the ice, the band-aids and the maturity along with the experience to discipline with just the right touch.

As we go about our day as parents, I bet we rarely notice the people that prepare and serve lunch for our children. But the children do. A common after school topic at my house is how nice the lunch lady is that lets the 5th graders have seconds. I also think that it takes a special person to get my third grade daughter to want to wash tables rather than go out to the playground. Now, I want to make sure that the school counselor, our enthusiastic music teacher, the librarians, the bus driver, and the P.E. teacher are permanent faces in my children’s elementary school scrapbooks. Without them, elementary school would not have such a delicious variety of flavors. Before I worked at the school I didn’t realize what a vital part the custodian plays in the lives of my kids…..He puts the tables up, he puts the tables down, he sweeps and wipes and cleans up all the unsightly messes that most of us don’t even want to think about. Not to mention he is tall and can reach all those too high places that even with a latter some of us can’t. So, let’s keep him in our scrapbook pages among the faces of people that we owe a debt of gratitude to, or at least a jelly doughnut.

At the top of my list of important school pictures would of course be the classroom teacher and the principal. They work endless hours, and most of the time thankless ones. I want to thank them. They are doing for my children what I can’t and I will forever be thankful to them. I want my children to have an attitude of gratitude also, so how about thanking them with a scrapbook page or two. I’m always scrambling for a thank you gift idea.

So I started thinking, wouldn’t it be fun to let my children give their teacher a gift to last a life-time? They could even include the whole class in this end of the year surprise. Pictures of the students participating in different activities throughout the year, hmmmm…I think this idea is a winner!

So as your kids go back to school think about all those scrapping moments that are happening right now, and don’t forget all the IMPORTANT PEOPLE that make your child’s school experience a memory to last a life-time!

Scenario: You ask your friend to snap a photo of you, and Uggh… When you take a look at the digital photo, your pupils are bright red and you look like a scary, smiling demon! Not only that, but the photo is slightly blurred, the room looks dark, and the colors are dull!

You’re frustrated as you skim through the other pics you snapped: they’re not much better… You wonder how you can become a better Digital Photographer and make fewer “digital bloopers?’

Solution: Take better shots, strengthen your photography skills, and make yourself and your photos more photogenic by following these 5 super-easy steps:

1. Overcast Days Aren’t So Gloomy After All. I chose to get married in San Diego, not only because that’s where I grew up, but for its reliable weather and sunshine for our outdoor wedding. I was a little disappointed when “the big day” came and turned out to be a cloudy one. I was shocked, though, when my photographer was ranting and raving about how great the overcast-weather was! Little did I know that overcast days are often times the very best days to take photos, because they produce softer shadows in pictures! Use overcast days to your advantage by snapping daytime photos that produce less of those harsh, dark shadows that bright, sunny days create!

2. Try a Tripod. Those long-legged camera stands may seem a little overwhelming to the Beginner Digital Photographer, but tripods are a great photography tool for anyone who wants to be included in more family/group pictures! My mother got one last December and it was a great buy! We were able to take our yearly family photos all together as a family- without asking anyone to leave the photo to take the pics (and without having to “Photoshop” them back into the group-photo later).

Start with a mini-tripod to hold your digital camera! We now sell our favorite mini-tripod through Amazon! Investing in a mini-tripod is not expensive and can fit in your purse! Mini-tripods are totally worth the low investment because they ensure that you’re always in friend and family photos!

Tripod Bonus: If you’re a caffeine-junkie like me, Tripods also prevent hand-held camera-shaking, which means less of those unfortunate blurred shots!

3. Super-Shutter Saves The Day! Investing in a Digital Camera with a super-fast shutter is absolutely worth the big price. Ever wonder why so many photos end up blurry? It’s typically because we click on the button to take a picture, expect the photo be shot, and our subjects move (even if it’s ever-so-slightly) or we move our camera (thinking the picture is finished). The picture actually then takes (obviously delayed, and taking it’s sweet time), and the result is blurred photos. Save your beautiful portrait shots and create “more-photogenic” photos by either using a faster-shutter digital camera, or taking your time with a slower-shutter camera. The person(s) being photographed need to stay completely still for three seconds after clicking the camera button- and same goes for the photographer. Three seconds may seem like a lifetime, but you can do it, and it’s more than worth it!

4. Be Aware of Your Surroundings. You may be a Digital Photography-Pro when it comes to getting your subjects to laugh, smile, and keep their eyes open in the photos you take, but are you as observant when it comes to choosing a good background? Take better pictures by taking the time to figure out the best surroundings for the item or person you want to capture on film. Our advice? For portrait pictures, use zoom options to focus on the person you want to photograph, and try to choose a less-complicated background (think simple surroundings like: plain walls!). Definitely steer clear of any unattractive, or just photo-distracting, objects lurking in the background in order to achieve a better shot.

5. Photo Editing Software: The Behind-the-Scenes Hero. No matter how you much you use the tools on your camera, adjust the lighting, and try to perfectly frame a shot, it’s not uncommon to take digital photos and still feel disappointed by the results… no matter who you are! Digital photos often times have flaws. But what’s great is that you can digitally fix them easily with Photo Editing software! Simple edits in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements can enhance your photos and restore them to the way you intended them to look! Keeping Starving Students Fed: 6 Tips for Digitally Scrapping Your Recipes!     (by Cheri Barlow 7/10/2009)

When your children have become adults, moved out of the house, and are going to school or working full-time; how soon they forget the 5 healthy food groups! When you visit your kids in their environment, you might be surprised to find empty pantries with nothing but a few packages of ramen noodles and potato chips!

One way to help them out (while letting them be adults) is to share recipes for delicious and nutritious meals that college-kids can easily make on their own. Digital scrapbooking recipes is a great way to entice your kids to print the recipe out, save it… even (Gasp!) make the food themselves! Not only that, but your kids may appreciate getting some new meal ideas. It is fun to send digital scrapbooking recipes to share with them. You can mail them, email them, or send them however you like to keep them connected and healthy.

Try These 6 Tips When Digitally Scrapbooking Recipes for College-Age Kids:

Tip 1: Keep the recipe background plain and white. In regular digital scrapbooking, we tend to use very colorful backgrounds
and layouts, but for digital scrapbooking recipes- that will probably be printed out on a home computer (and maybe on a limited ink budget) keeping them on a white background will keep printing costs down. It will also help them print the recipe faster, which might also increase the odds of young adults actually printing and using the recipes!

Tip 2: Use pictures. Like regular digital scrapbooking, use photos to emphasize. I often include photos of the preparations if I think that might help my child understand some of the cooking techniques. Some young adults need to see the steps as well as the final product. I remember one time I sent a digital scrapbooking recipe to my daughter and it called for a pork loin roast, so I even took a picture of the pre-cooked meat, that way she could know what to look for when shopping for a pork loin roast on her own.

Tip 3: Keep it simple and keep it cost effective. Money is tight, and now is not the time for prime rib, or recipes filled with expensive ingredients. Keep the cost down and make the recipe look tasty but affordable. Not to mention, many young people are quite busy with first jobs, heavy college loads, and are incredibly busy with new challenges. Kids need to have meals that are simple and can be prepared quickly, so try to choose recipes that are good but easy to make.

Tip 4: Add journaling, comments, and event tags. It is great to add other snippets and comments to your digital recipes, like, “First tried on Christmas 2008” or, “This recipe comes from Grandma and she always made it every Thanksgiving.” Using comments, event tags, or journaling,  all can add interest to your recipes, and be a part of passing on your family history to your kids.

Tip 5: Give them a binder and a paper hole-punch. Make it easy for them to keep their recipes organized  by giving them a hole puncher and binder to keep all their digital scrapbooking recipes neat and tidy.

Tip 6: Encourage them to send you some of their recipes along with their own photos. If they don’t have time to digitally scrapbook the recipes, have them email you the recipes and digital photos. From there, it is easy to cut and paste the text and add the photos into a pre-made digital scrapbooking recipe page! There’s really no need to redesign a new digital scrapbooking recipe page. Six Sports Photo Tips for Digital Scrapbooking!

Every year when school starts I am reminded that I live my life in seasons. Though Fall may be my favorite season, I am suddenly jolted into the reality that my sports seasons (that dictate my entire schedule) are here in full force.

During the Fall, Winter, and Spring season, I may be the mother of children and a husband participating in six different sports at one time. This is often exhausting, demanding, and can become very frustrating for me and so I have come up with a way to focus on the positive and forget that there can be anything negative about it.

I don’t believe that I am alone in the effort to raise children that enjoy sports and so I would like to share my method with any of you sports mom’s out there that need a break.

Here are some ideas for you to enjoy the seasons in your life just as much as I do.

Six Sports Photo Tips:

Tip 1:  Always carry your camera with you as well as your sense of humor. I was delighted the other day as I watched my nine year old  daughter participate in a track practice.

When I first arrived at the practice I couldn’t find her, I became worried and with camera in hand I started walking to the track where the other kids were practicing.

I had a good laugh when I arrived at the very back of the track and found my daughter with a friend catching grasshoppers. This was a picture perfect moment.

Tip 2: Focus on taking pictures of moments that mean the most to an individual child. My thirteen year old sister-in-law’s basketball team had a particularly rough game one day. All of the girls were crying in the locker room as the coach was not happy with their performance on the court.

The coaches wife walked into the locker room and saw all the crying girls and changed the entire atmosphere immediately by saying “Girls, it’s o.k., at least your hair was cute!”

Now that I have my own thirteen year old girl, I often think of this story when taking pictures of her in a sports setting.

I try to remember that to her it’s important to have a picture of her hair tied up in yellow and green ribbons and to get a picture of the balloons the parents have decorated the chairs with. Keep in mind that each child is an individual and focus on taking pictures that would be important in their memories.

Tip 3: Take step-by-step photos of the “sports process.”

Sometimes we only bring  cameras to the game or competition, but capturing some of the shots of the practices, the first time they put on the uniform, and even the kids enjoying the after game snacks is a great way to capture the whole event and then when it is digitally scrapped you can make a complete album of the whole sports process!

This is great way to keep the memories alive!

Tip 4: Ask a friend to take pictures for you and return the favor. This year my son received the most special gift. He was a Freshman in High School and was on the Varsity Wrestling Team. One of the kids on the team had a grandfather who is a professional photographer and he also had a sideline pass at the State Tournament that got him fairly close to the mats. As my son went out to wrestle in the Quarter final match against the favored Senior in his weight category, this grandfather said he just had a feeling that something special was about to unfold. He took pictures of the match from start to finish. At the banquet he presented my son with a framed and scrapped plaque that showed the match in detail. He had a picture of his hand being raised in victory, a picture of him hugging his dad (and coach), hugging his grandpa, and hugging his great grandpa on the sidelines.

This is a priceless gift and one that I could not have produced for myself as you can imagine if you are a sports mom, I was shaking to badly to take a decent picture.

We don’t always have a professional around to captures those moments, so ask a friend to take pictures for you and return the favor to them.

Remember be ready to take step by step photos so that you don’t miss that sports moment of a lifetime.

Tip 5: Take your PC with you!  I always love to take my laptop with me so that I can use that 10 minute  space of time while I am waiting for a practice to finish up or while I am waiting for a game to start. I have learned that these little spaces of time really add up and make it possible for me to enjoy my scrapbooking hobby while I am on the run. Tip 6: Get Sports Digital Scrapbooking Supplies to put your photos on, and combine digital scrapbooking with your families sport hobbies!

You sports photos need to go somewhere besides sitting in your digital camera! Take them and digitally scrap them so you can share your sports events with others!

I like these sports brushes and “stamp” them on several of my sports digital scrapbooking pages.

So all of you, “sports moms” out there, Remember to take your laptop computer with you to all the events you go to, and scrap in the spare moments! Also, see about using the the other tips in this article to get more out of your child’s “sports” moments!

Sometimes, as moms if we combine our hobby with the rest of our families hobbies our lives become more enjoyable, relaxed and we feel like we have done something for ourselves even in the process of serving others.

Write a Special Note for your Child and put it into their Lunch Box!

Ideas for lunch box notes:

Now the lunch boxes are filled with fun food, how about writing a special love note, or a congratulations for your good grades note, or thinking of you today note, or lots of good thoughts for you as you take your test note! Really, any special and personalized note will do.

Pack a lunch box note every so often to remind your kids that you are thinking of them! Also, consider adding jokes, trivia, a quote, and tongue twisters too!

I always loved finding a surprise note in my lunch box as a kid. It is fun be remembered in some way.

But don’t just scribble a note on a paper!  Take your lunch box love notes to the next step by digital scrapping it!

Open up Photoshop Elements or Photoshop and make several special notes at a time, or one for each of your children! Add digital scrapbooking paper, embellishments, and text. Then fold and write a special note inside!
