Since my move from southern California to Nashville, Tennessee (or what I like to call NashVegas- haha!) I have had to adjust to colder winters and harsher weather. That’s why I am so ready and definitely looking forward to Spring 2010! I’m ready to warm up!

Besides warmer weather, spring also makes me think of spring cleaning. It’s a great time of year to come out of our dark caves, clean up our surroundings, and get organized again!

Do you ever feel the same way about digital scrapbooking? As less-messy as digital scrapbooking is compared to traditional scrapbooking (thank goodness it’s all on your computer and there aren’t real photo, paper, sticker, and ribbon clippings everywhere right?!), as your digital scrapbooking collection grows, things can feel a little crazy and overwhelming! But with all the Natural Disasters in the news lately it might be helpful to plan for just a few more things that might help in case of an emergency.

Here are some travel tips that might be helpful to know about and make your trip run smoother just in case a disaster strikes your vacation destination.

Tip 1: Before the trip make preparation that includes bringing along the phone numbers of your travel agent, travel insurance provider, relatives and others who may be able to mobilize help in an emergency.

Tip 2: Know how to make an international call from the place you are visiting for example dialing 1 and the area code and then the number only works if you are visiting in the US! So find out how to make calls in the country you are going to.

Tip 3: Register your itinerary with the State Department before you leave. This can be done at https://travelregistration.state.gov

It is also a good idea to write down phone numbers and addresses of the nearest US embassy in the places you will be traveling.

The U.S. State Department provides assistance 24 hours a day, seven days a week to U.S. citizens in crisis abroad. Call 1-888-407-4747 if calling from the United States or Canada, or 00-1-202-501-4444 if calling from overseas.

Tip 4: If you are caught in a disaster when you are traveling then once you are safe, if you have Internet access you can put yourself on the Red Cross’ “Safe and Well” list at https://disastersafe.redcross.org/. Doing this can take some stress off loved ones at home.

While we hope for a very fun trip, still is is good to prepare for emergencies, hopefully these tips will help you to begin that process.

Here’s to lots of fun to all of our trips! And hoping we all stay safe too! Take a little time to be prepared – then go and enjoy!

I laughed. It’s true, I probably won’t look like I’m ready to srtut my stuff down the runway right after I give birth, that’s for sure, but I hadn’t really even thought of that… I have so much on my mind already, from getting the nursery set-up, to taking baby classes, and just getting through the remaining weeks of pregnancy (oh, and not to mention, the easy activity of giving birth to the baby itself- haha), that as much as I think about photos (I do work for Digital Scrapbooks and More, ya’ know!) I wonder if any women ever dab on a little lip gloss, powder their nose, and use a little mascara before snapping their first baby pics? Personally, I think it’s very important to take those first-moment photos. I want to have my husband capture the very first time I hold and kiss my precious little baby for the very first time. I know that the last thing running through my mind as I love on my newborn will be how I look. But I also know that it’s a while after the delivery, when my baby is home safe and sound, and I’m looking over the delivery pics that I will prefer to look at pics without massive pimples and blemishes showing on all over my face.

My children always told me how special they felt when they opened their lunch box and found a little note from mom!

St. Patrick’s day is a perfect time to add a little special love note to your child’s lunch box, backpack or pen case!

You might even consider putting a note in your husband’s brief case too!

Now you could buy cards to put in all the lunches — expensive! You could scribble in a note pad and tear it out and place in the lunch box — boring!

So what can a busy mom do?!

Well there is a very easy way to make a quick note but jazz it up so it is exciting while keeping the cost low!

Grab you digital scrapbooking supplies, custom brushes and open up Photoshop or Photoshop Elements and start scrapping your note cards!

First, use a scrapbooking paper for your background, then put embellishments on, with the Text Tool type your message like “Happy St. Patrick’s Day!” add your child’s name for a personal touch!

Next, print the note cards, then cut them out and handwrite a special note your child!

Fortunately I had pictures along with the article that really made the memories vivid ones.

As busy parents and grandparents I wonder how often we have experiences that we completely forget about that could have been a meaningful part of our history. In my case I am afraid that it happens all too often.

Here are a 4 tips that I have for you that have helped me become better at not letting important memories slip away.

Tip 1: Keep an events journal. This can be as easy as recording on your daily calendar the events that you participated in that day. Record at least weekly in a journal the feelings that you had about those events that are listed in your events journal or calendar. Every once in a while I feel that I have had an experience that is really special. I have a book that I call my Happy Moments Book. Whenever we have an experience as a family or individually that I want to remember I record it in this special book.

Tip 2: Carry your camera with you everywhere. So many opportunities used to arise that I missed a perfect picture because I didn’t have a camera with me. I have learned to leave one in my car or in my purse so that I can capture those moments that I don’t want to forget. It is also there in case I am in an accident and need pictures. Cameras are so small now that it is easy to keep a camera with you all the time so take advantage of this wonderful way to preserve memories.

Tip 3: Decide how often you would like to transfer the pictures from your camera to your computer.

This should be done as often as needed so that you always have plenty of space on your camera for unexpected picture taking opportunities.

I like to do this once a month and then I tag the pictures with the month and year so that I can find them easily when I want to.

Also, you might want to check these tutorials Get Organized in the Organizer a Simple Start for Elements Lesson 1, and Lesson 2 and Lesson 3) — it shows you how to tag your photos and save them to a CD as a backup!

Tip 4: Remember that there are so many ways to preserve your special pictures. It is very common for me to find my children on the computer looking through the picture files. It is such a fun way for them to recall all the great times they have had growing up. I keep a special file for all of my digital scrapbooking pages. The kids really like to go into this file and check out the pictures of them that I have scrapped.

I remember looking at picture albums as a child and now those albums are so worn out and the pictures have faded.

That is a great thing about storing those pictures on your computer, they don’t wear out.

I also make a disk to keep in my home and a disk that I send to a close member of the family in case for some reason my pictures are lost.

It is also very fun to scrapbook the pictures that you take and send them off to have a book made. This type of scrapbooking can include information about events as well as journaling pages.

This way it is easy to show off family members to friends that come by your home. These books are so beautifully put together and look terrific on a end table or coffee table in a living room.

She bought one for about $15 and everything worked great! She was transferring photos to her computer in no time!

One memory card reader I have is the Kingston 19 in 1 Memory Card Reader. It is great as it reads all my memory cards from digital cameras, cell phone to Video memory cards!  (Get this Memory Card Reader Here)

You can look on the memory card reader and see where you insert your memory card and then you plug it into your computer. You can then swap your photos, video, files back and forth, and even erase photos quickly!

You can use this method instead of connecting your camera directly to your computer to transfer the photos

When you are a digital scrapbooker or a photo editor, getting your photos to your computer quickly and easily is a must!

Sometimes it is easier take your memory card out of your camera for transferring the photos using a USB Memory Card Reader. These card readers usually connect to your computer via a USB connection. The advantage is that they are usually faster, sometimes easier to use, and you usually don’t have to use a software program to transfer the photos. Also, if your camera battery dies in the middle of transferring photos – then you might have some errors. But memory card readers work off the power in your computer and don’t have a battery so they are less likely to have problems.

Also, it is nice to know that some computers have these card readers already built into them!

So, if you have a problem with transferring you digital photos to your computer, or if you want to make things one step easier, then you might want to try a Memory Card Reader to transfer you digital photos to your computer next time!

I get asked all the time how to get digital photos out of a digital camera and on to computer so here are the basic steps.

Six Steps to Transferring Digital Photos from your Camera to your Computer:

Step 1: First you will need some digital photos on your camera. Take some pictures of family, friends, pets or whatever you like

Then to transfer photos to your computer from your camera, you need to have a digital camera first – and a computer!

My camera happens to be a Sony digital camera, but there are many great brands to choose from

Once you have taken some photos with your digital camera, you are ready to begin!

Step 2: Plug your Digital Camera into your Computer.

Most digital cameras come with a USB cord that plugs your digital camera to your computer.

Also, most digital cameras come with software to help you transfer the images. (Please check your software and manual for complete instructions) Doing this transfers the photos to your computer where you can save them, and then digitally scrap them!

Step 3: Copy Pictures to your Computer

Note: While all camera software or card readers might be different than our example, this step with our transferring photos will show some of the basic steps you might encounter when transferring photos to a computer

Wait a few seconds after plugging your digital camera into your computer, or after inserting the memory card into the reader and a pop-up dialog should appear

In our example we are using the Card Reader and this type of pop-up dialog appears

So in this case — Choose “Copy pictures to a folder on my computer”

Click OK

Step 4: Cancel out of any other Graphic Loading Pop-ups

Note: Other pop-ups may appear if you have other photo/graphic programs installed

In this case, a pop-up for Photoshop® Elements 6 has appeared asking if I would like to open my photos from my digital camera to PSE 6 Organizer

In this case, I am going to click Cancel because I want to save my new photos to another folder on my computer first

Note: depending on your other programs, you might get several such pop-ups. You can use them or cancel out of them.

Step 5: Continue with the Camera Wizard

In this example we used the Camera Wizard Pop-up that first came up before we canceled other graphic programs pop-ups.

Your program may look different and have different settings, but the main point is to follow though on one of the graphic programs that helps you load your photos to your computer.

Click Next on the original pop-up to save photos to your computer

Step 6: Choose which photos to Save and press Next button

The photos that you have taken with your digital camera will appear

All of the photos with the green check marks (see arrow #1 in red) are photos that will be saved to your computer

If there are any photos that you would not like to save to your computer, simply click on the green check mark once. The check mark will disappear and the photo will not be saved to your computer

Then click Next (see arrow #2 in red)

Step 7: Name your Photos Folder and Save to a Location on your Computer

A pop-up screen asks you to name your photos

I had taken several photos of my husband, and my puppies, and myself – so I named the photos “Tom and Jenn with the Puppies” because of the general theme of photos (see arrow #1 in red)

It also asks you where you would like to save the photos (see arrow #2 in red). It’s important to save the photos in a place where you will remember when it’s time to go back and use them. Use the Browse button if you need to (see arrow #3 in red) and navigate to a folder that you would like to save the photos in

Then click Next (see arrow #4 in red)

Step 8: Let your Photos transfer to your computer

Be patient as your photos download and save to the folder you specified

Another pop-up comes up when the photos are done downloading, choose the option “Nothing. I’m finished working with these pictures”

Click Next and then another window appears – Click Finish

Again – your program might be different from mine, but the concept generally is the same, whatever program you use — basically that you must connect your camera, select a program (or way) to transfer your photos and then follow the screens and make choices for those photos –like what photos to transfer and where to put them on your computer.

Step 9: Your photos are on your computer!

Your photos have now been saved to a folder on your computer

Now that your digital photos have been saved, you may delete them from your digital camera if you would like and begin taking new photos

Also, now that you have saved digital photos on your computer, you can begin using these images for Digital Scrapbooking!

This year I was looking over St Patrick’s Day recipes and thinking maybe I can combine recipes and greetings for my family all into one!

In other words, I think this year I will save some postage and email a St Patrick’s Greeting and Recipe Book!

Here is how I am going to do it!

Step 1: Get the recipes I want to use in the “Greeting Card/Recipe Book”. If you have photos even better!

Step 2: Get Digital Scrapbooking Supplies. I like using The Lucky Green Quick Page Album Kit 1 (8.5×11″) because it has pre-designed scrapbooking pages with recipe and notes right in the design. And, because the set is a Quick Page Kit  all the work is basically done -  all I have to do is add my photos, recipes and a few included WordArt phrases and I am done with the scrapbooking part!

REALLY, it is that easy!

This kit is also good as it comes in standard US paper size which makes printing and putting in a binder easier!

Step 3: Scrap my digital scrapbooking recipe pages. It is easy to make get digital scrapbooking pages using Photoshop.  I just bring my digital photos, the Quick Page, WordArt and type a few words to personalize and I am ready to make the next recipe page!

If you like you can use Photoshop Elements to do the same thing! If you are new to digital scrapbooking and would like to know more about Photoshop versus Photoshop Elements then see this article!

After I have made my digital scrapbooking recipe pages in either Photoshop or Photoshop Elements I can save them and turn them into a digital PDF album!

Step 4: Turn my scrap pages into a Digital Scrapbooking Recipe Book in PDF format and email to family and friends.  It will save me money on printing, shipping boxes, and postage when I turn my digital scrapbooking recipe book into a PDF album and email it to friends and family.

Note: I have my view turned on to 2-page viewing – but you could set it to see only one page at a time.

These pages where easy and fast to make and now I plan to send this to my family and friends this St Patrick’s Day instead of a greeting card! I think they will enjoy it! And who knows maybe they will even try some of the recipes!

Even if you aren’t Irish it is fun to join in the fun and celebrate different cultures and what is easier to do that then cooking a few traditional dishes from different culture?!

I love to make this dish on St Patrick’s Day to have some fun – but also because the corn beef brisket used in this dish is so cheap around St Patrick’s Day how can you miss! I like to take the work out of it this dish by dumping it all in a slow cooker, flipping the switch and coming back when it is done! How simple! Plus, the longer you can cook the meat the more tender it becomes – so I think a slow cooker is just perfect for this and makes celebrating St Patrick’s Day a snap!

Here is my recipe:

St Patrick’s Day Slow Cooker Corned Beef and Cabbage

Ingredients:

• 1 Cup pre-peeled baby carrots
• 10 baby red potatoes (depending on size might need to be cut in half)
• 1-2 cup water
• 1 (4 pound) corned beef brisket with spice packet
• 1 head cabbage,  chopped into quarters
