Dear Blog Readers: You have been asking lots of questions this and that, but one of the biggest questions I get is to give you the best or hottest tips for using Photoshop or Elements in digital scrapbooking or photo editing projects!

So here over the next few weeks I will try to give you 50 of my super secret or best tips for using Photoshop Elements or Photoshop in Digital Scrapbooking or Photo Editing. So by the time you are done with this special blog series you will have many helpful tips to use when you are working in Photoshop or Elements!

This time we will start with TIP 4: How to reset your filter instead of canceling it in Photoshop Elements and Photoshop!

First, let’s talk about the default settings then talk about how to change that. If you have been working with an image and applying a filter to it, then you might be tempted to keep adjusting it, perhaps you have applied multiple filters to it!

For example, in the image above you can see how applying several filters isn’t what I wanted. However, instead of using the cancel button and starting over, I can reset it!

So here is how …..

Now, here how you do it in Photoshop Elements ……

To do this in Photoshop Elements:

In Photoshop Elements most dialogs that have a Cancel button, but you can change Cancel to Reset by holding down the Alt (Mac: Option) key.

Click on the Reset button to put all the settings back to their original values!

FYI: Photoshop Users it works the same way!

So if you’ve played around with a filter’s settings and think you’ve
gone too far — Don’t Cancel; Reset!

Now just add your great image to your scrapbooking project!

Dear Blog Readers: You have been asking lots of questions this and that, but one of the biggest questions I get is to give you the best or hottest tips for using Photoshop or Elements in digital scrapbooking or photo editing projects!

So here over the next few weeks I will try to give you 50 of my super secret or best tips for using Photoshop Elements or Photoshop in Digital Scrapbooking or Photo Editing. So by the time you are done with this special blog series you will have many helpful tips to use when you are working in Photoshop or Elements!

This time we will start with TIP 3: how to stop those annoying tabbed windows in Photoshop Elements and Photoshop.

First, let’s talk about the default settings then talk about how to change that. If you just installed Photoshop Elements or Photoshop then chance are the default setting is tabbed windows.

What this means to the digital scrapbooker, is that all the digital scrapbooking paper, embellishments, photos and supplies all load into the workspace of Photoshop Elements tabbed together. See the image above.

This is a problem for digital scrapbookers that are working a digital scrapbooking layout and want drag their supplies on to their scrap projects. Even photo editors may not like this default setting.

What works better is if each of the digital scrapbooking items comes into the workspace in individual windows. See the example below:

In this example above you can see your digital scrapbooking project and arrange the supplies easier because each item is in floating separate windows and not tabbed together!

So here is how you change the tab setting to floating windows!

Now, here how you do it in Photoshop Elements ……

To do this in Photoshop Elements:

In Photoshop Elements go to Edit>Preferences>General
(Mac Users: Photoshop Elements>Preferences>General)

Then when the menu box appears do this: Click Allow Floating Documents in Full Edit Mode, then click OK button

If you have already loaded items before setting these preference then your items will still be tabbed but new items you add will be floating in their own window that you can arrange. You can separate all of them by going to the top drop down menu and click Float All in Window.

This separates the tabs and puts each item in an individual floating window that can be arranged more easily for digital scrapbook layouts.

Special EXTRA TIP: if you move your windows to close to the top of any individual window then it will snap together and tab. You can keep that from happening by holding down the ctrl key as you move your window close to another one.

Also, if it does snap together just go to the tab and drag it out so it can be an individual window again.

Now you can finish your digital scrapbooking project!

Now you can use this same techniques in Photoshop to do the same things, ONLY a few small differences – see these below!

To do this in Photoshop:

Now let’s try this same task in Photoshop. In Photoshop it works much the same way with these differences.

In Photoshop go to Edit>Preferences>Interface
(Mac Users: Photoshop Elements>Preferences>Interface)

In Photoshop, UNCHECK Open Documents as Tabs, and Enable Floating Document Window Docking and then click the OK button

This allows each item in an individual floating window that can be arranged more easily for digital scrapbook layouts.

If you have already loaded items before setting these preference then your items will still be tabbed but new items you add will be floating in their own window that you can arrange. You can separate all of them by going to the top drop down menu and click Float All in Window.

Special EXTRA TIP in Photoshop: holding down the ctrl key as you move your window close to another one can snap them together in a tabbed window. If it does snap together and you want to separate them then just go to the tab and drag it out so it can be an individual window again.

Dear Blog Readers: You have been asking lots of questions this and that, but one of the biggest questions I get is to give you the best or hottest tips for using Photoshop or Elements in digital scrapbooking or photo editing projects!

So here over the next few weeks I will try to give you 50 of my super secret or best tips for using Photoshop Elements or Photoshop in Digital Scrapbooking or Photo Editing. So by the time you are done with this special blog series you will have many helpful tips to use when you are working in Photoshop or Elements!

This time we will start with TIP 2: How to make white text easier to see!

First, let’s talk about the default settings then talk about how to change that.

For example if you were trying to make some white text on a transparent background then the default transparency grid for Photoshop Elements is white and light gray, which can be a challenge to see. Take a look at the example below and see how the text blends into the background with this default setting!

Here is that same example in Photoshop.

Now, here is the trick or tip……

Start by changing the color of the grid! This will make the white text easier to see and easier to work with in either photo editing or digital scrapbooking projects.

To do this in Photoshop Elements:

In Photoshop Elements go to Edit>Preferences>Transparency
(Mac Users: Photoshop Elements>Preferences>Transparency)

Then click on the Grid Colors pull-down menu and choose Dark, then click on OK button

Now see how this makes it much easier to see the text with the transparent background.

Now you can finish your project and see the text better. If you want to return to the default setting for the next project just do the reverse – Edit>Preferences>Transparency and select Light

To do this in Photoshop:

Now let’s try this same task in Photoshop. In Photoshop it works much the same way.

In Photoshop go to Edit>Preferences>Transparency & Gamut
(Mac Users: Photoshop Elements>Preferences>Transparency & Gamut)

Now see how this makes it much easier to see the text with the transparent background.

If you want to return to the default setting for the next project just do the reverse – Edit>Preferences>Transparency & Gamut and select Light

Helpful Tip:

Using this tip can really help on some projects that you need to change the defaults. This tip is really good to know about and can be used for more than just making white text show up on a darker background. For example what if the text was gray? Then maybe a color would be helpful instead of just dark or light!

In Photoshop and Photoshop elements Do this:

In Photoshop: Edit>Preferences>Transparency & Gamut and select Color (Mac Users: Photoshop Elements>Preferences>Transparency & Gamut pick a color)

In Photoshop Elements go to Edit>Preferences>Transparency pick a color (Mac Users: Photoshop Elements>Preferences>Transparency pick a color)

Then it would look like this.

Or create your own custom color by clicking on the color swatches below the menu to open the Color Picker and customize your colors

Photoshop works the same way as Elements on the topic above, so just follow the directions for Elements and it will work for Photoshop. But Photoshop has one additional control in this area – the Gamut control – as seen in the image below.

• Note: A gamut is the range of colors that a color system can display or print. A color that can be displayed in RGB could be out of gamut, and therefore unprintable, for your CMYK setting. A topic for another blog! But here is where that control is on Photoshop. Elements does not have this feature and also doesn’t have a CMYK setting either.

Being able to control what the transparent background looks like such as color or dark to light really can help you digitally scrap or photo edit some tricky projects!

Today’s tip will cover moving or rearrange layers in the Layer Panel without using the mouse!

Dear Blog Readers: You have been asking lots of questions this and that, but one of the biggest questions I get is to give you the best or hottest tips for using Photoshop or Elements in digital scrapbooking or photo editing projects!

So here over the next few weeks I will try to give you 50 of my super secret or best tips for using Photoshop Elements or Photoshop in Digital Scrapbooking or Photo Editing. So by the time you are done with this special blog series you will have many helpful tips to use when you are working in Photoshop or Elements!

This week we will start with TIP 1: How to Move or Rearrange Layers in the Layer Panel without using your mouse to do it!

First, let’s talk about the basic way to do this then I will give the special tip to do this a different way. So, if you have been digital scrapbooking and making a digital scrapbooking page with lots of elements on the page like digital papers, embellishments, photos and text then you have probably had the chance to rearrange these different digital scrapbooking items in you digital scrapbooking page layout. Usually a basic way to move an item up or down in the layer panel is by using the mouse to drag layers to the new position.

For example, in the image below you can see the FISH embellishment is below the photos of the beach walkers. In the Layers Panel the FISH embellishment is above the digital scrapbooking paper but needs to be moved above all the photos to to look right in this digital scrapbooking layout.

Now the basic way to change positions by taking the mouse and dragging to the new position in Photoshop Elements.

It would work the same as in Elements by taking the mouse and dragging to the new position.

So here is another way that is faster and easy too!

TIP 1: How to Move or Rearrange Layers in the Layer Panel without using your mouse to do it!

Did you know you can do this same task in Photoshop Elements or Photoshop without taking your hands off the keyboard?

It works the same in both program – Hold down the Ctrl (Mac: Command) key and press the right bracket ( ] ) to move the layer upward or the left bracket ( [ ) to move downward in the Layers Panel.

This is a extra great technique for moving and arranging layers fast when using Photoshop and Photoshop Elements in digital scrapbooking or photo projects.

Try this tip next time you are working away in one of your projects, you probably will love it so much that you might never use your mouse to move a layer again!

What it is May already?

April flew in and out of my life this year. Was it ever really here? In fact, I think March blew past without sticking around much too! I imagine some of you other moms out there feel the same way I do. Especially, if you have a Senior graduating from High School this is an especially busy month coming up.

If you have been reading this blog, then you know I have been writing a series of blog articles about making a Senior Scrapbooking Album for my son? (See the other articles below!)

Right now I am very glad that I have already started a special gift for my Senior, a digital scrapbook with scrap pages that represent each of the months, in his senior year!

When he started his Senior year it was my goal of capturing my sons’ senior year by making a few scrap pages for each month! I wanted to scrap a special album all about him and his senior year, with each month’s activities until he graduates then I will have all the digital scrap pages made for his Senior Year Scrap Album! I will have the scrap pages printed and bound into a lovely Scrap/photo album that I will give him for a graduation gift.

Now, his senior year is ending, I must admit that I actually missed one or two months!  But still it was easier to catch up  with a couple of months at a time than to try to scrap the whole year right when he is getting ready for graduation!

I will start with March digital scrapbooking pages as this is where I left off, I think it might be fun to make some pages about family, and our Irish roots!

I like blending some family photos, family traditions special for our family.

Some of the other month’s in this scrapbooking album I will scrap pages that have friends, and school events too!

Next, I need to made a scrap page for April. I think a fun page of him and his best “girl” friend this year. They have had a super exciting year together. Some of the highlights are the dances they have gone to, the Mr. High School contest, and the Color Me Rad fun run. I can focuses April’s digital scrapbooking pages on these events and put a few of their other favorite pictures in.

Looking ahead to scrapping the May digital scrapbooking pages I will have loads of photos to scrap! Graduation celebrations, meetings to honor the graduates, PROM, Senior Sneak, and of course graduation.

I would like to give this special book to my son shortly after graduation, so I will digitally scrap as each of the photos for these events is available and then I will send them all to the printers and have a whole scrapbook of his senior year made for him!!

As you look back on your child’s senior year, my hope is that you will truly feel blessed as you reminisce about all the days in this special year.

Journaling and digital scrapbooking is a natural combination! You have your lovely scrapped page and then you add your precious photos so now it makes sense to include something said about the whole thing too!

In fact some people say that scrapbooks without journaling are just pretty photo albums! We as scrapbookers might think there is a bit more to it than that. Still while it is true that “a picture is worth a thousand words”, in your scrapbooking projects, photos with WORDS can tell a more complete story! And for those that are sharing your scrapbooks they might also understand and enjoy them more if some WORDS where added to the pages.

However sometimes we want to write more, but don’t know where to start. So, here are some Mother’s Day journaling prompts that might help if you are journaling and scrapbooking your family Photos for mom! You can even have your children use some of these prompts and write on Grandmother!

Mother’s Day Prompts (Can be used for Grandmothers too!):

• My mom is great because…
• Mother’s day is…
• The top 2, 5, 10 things I love about my mom are…
• Write about a lesson you have learned from your mom
• What makes a good mother? Write about it.
• My mom always says…
• Finish this sentence in as many ways as you can think of: “My mother is a great mom because …”
• If I could choose, me and my mom would do these mother’s day activities together…
• Write about your funniest memory of your mother.
• Make a list of things you love about your mother.
• Imagine that you and your mom switched places and you suddenly became “Her for a Day.” What would it be like? How would you feel? How would your life be different? Write about it.
• Imagine writing stories about your mother. Record your wildest, funniest, or happiest idea. If you can find photos to match your stories include them in your scrap page too!
• Create a scrapbook of Memories for your mom. Choose five or six favorite memories and write about them. Illustrate in scrapbook pages and combine to make an album.
• Write about the best piece of advice your mom ever gave you.
• My special mothers day message for my mom is…
• Keep a week-long “Mom Journal.” Observe your mom each day for a week, and record the many things she does both for you individually and for your family as a whole. Write them down. Then, take time to thank her for doing them. Add some photos and scrap the journal.
• Create a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting your mother and your grandmother (mom’s mother). Include photo of each of them. Send a copy to your mom and grandmother.
• Create a word web of adjectives that describe your mother.
• Find some mother’s day quotes and write about them and how they make you feel.

While these are only a few Mother’s Day prompts they might help you start writing and journaling more on your digital scrapbooking pages and projects. Take a look at them and see if they spark the creative writer in you!

I am hosting a fiesta at my house this holiday! I’m always excited to eat Mexican food (really now, who doesn’t love Mexican food?!!), but Cinco De Mayo is the perfect excuse to chow down on tacos, burritos, fajitas, nachos… and Margaritas!

Although I’m hosting the party at my house, I’ve asked each one of my guests to bring their favorite Mexican food or snack. It’s really made it quite easy to host, actually, because I don’t have to cook the entire meal and provide all the snacks for all the people! With all my friends pitching in and bringing a dish or side, I won’t be stressed out at all pre-party!

I do want to provide a few snacks though, and I’ll definitely have some tortilla chips and salsa out and ready for my guests, but I want to dabble with a new recipe or two as well.

I signed up to make drinks and I’m also thinking of trying out this fun Mexican adult beverage recipe that I saw at Martha Stewart website! It looks delicious.

Because I’ll be testing out a new recipe or two, I’m going to add my favorite recipes to my Cinco De Mayo party scrap page.

One of favorite things to do is to not only snap a few pics of me and my friends at our get-togethers (which is most important!), but to also take photos of the décor and food!

I use these food-shots later and include them on scrap pages and add the recipes on the side. It makes for an adorable digital scrapbooking page, and also helps me keep track of my favorite recipes and when I used them or first tried them!

My friends always ask me for a copy too. It’s a clever way to personalize special moments and special recipes. I can email the the Digital Recipe Book I make too! I’ll be using the Fiesta Party Digital Scrapbooking Kit 3 to scrap my Cinco De Mayo food and drink recipes. All I do is add the recipe’s text to the adorable, Mexican fiesta-inspired recipe card and it’s done! Too cute.

Also, because my friends are bringing the food and I have some extra time, I’ve decided to really focus on other special party-details. Like, I’m making Cinco De Mayo party invitations with the Fiesta Party Digital Scrapbooking Kit 1. I will scrap invitation for all my guests. It’s a fun and affordable way to send out invites. I love these new Fiesta kits and will be making my very own Cinco De Mayo stickers for the kids! Taking the Fiesta Party Scrapbooking Kit 2 (or any of the kits) I just digitally scrap the digital embellishments on a white background page and print out on a piece of sticker paper… And waaaa-laaa!

The kids can cut out the stickers and put them all over drawing paper, their paper plates, their clothes or sombrero… Haha, you name it! Another way I’ll be providing more fun for everyone, affordably!
