It my goal of capturing my sons’ senior year by making a scrap page for each month! I want to scrap an album of each month until he graduates then I will have all the digital scrap pages made for his Senior Year Scrap Album! I will have the scrap pages printed and bound into a lovely Scrap/photo album that I will give him for a graduation gift.

November, a Month of Gratitude for My Son’s Scrapbook Project:

November, the month of gratitude has arrived. I find myself in an all too quiet house reflecting on the memories of the past year, which by the way, has been anything but quiet. I have so many fun memories to think about. Many of which include my eighteen year old, senior in high school, son. So if you are following the scrapbook pages that I am making every month for my Senior, I have decided to make a scrapbook page for him to remind him of the things he is, or should be, grateful for this year as the theme for the November pages in my scrapbooking project.

Because this month is so hectic I will take a shortcut and use Quick Page kits these are scrapbooking pages that are already mostly scrapped all you have to do is add your photos, some text, and basically you are done.

I like this Fall Scrapbooking kit ( Fall Foliage Quick Page Digital Scrapbooking Kit 2) because it will fit with my scrapbooking project size 11×8.5” and I like the design too!

My son doesn’t know I am making a scrapbook for him as a gift. I can’t wait to surprise him with it and I get more and more excited every month as I create the pages. So to keep it a secret, I tell him when I take photos that they are for the blog! … well, they are … see the photos in this blog!!! But I don’t tell him I am also making a special surprise scrapbook of his senior year with the photos!

But this month is different, as I take pictures of him, he keeps giving me grief about it. “Oh, mom, another picture for the blog, please mom no, this is stupid.” So when I give him these pictures and he finds out why I was taking pictures of him, I’m sure we will get a good laugh out of it.

Some of the great pictures for this month will include various pictures of him with different family members. I will put some photos of him as a senior too.

Other pages I will make as soon as I can get the photos are of these things he loves and is grateful for like: the wrestling room at his school, it is his “Tera-Bithia” so to speak so I will include a picture of that. He truly enjoys that mountains that surround our area and goes as often as he can with his friends to spend a night out in the open air under the stars, so I will take a picture of the mountains. Of course, I want to include some pictures of his closest friends. I will also include a picture of the car he bought at the beginning of this year that now has been window painted by the cheerleaders in the school colors.

One scrap idea to make ordinary photos seem more Fall like; is to use some Fall brushes to decorate the photos too!

Just load a brush set into Photoshop or Photoshop Elements and “stamp” the brushes on the photos that I want to look more decorated!

This month is October, and I know it is almost over, but it isn’t to late to keep up with my goal of capturing my sons’ senior year by making a scrap page for each month! Bring on the Fun for Halloween and Digital Scrapbooking too!

Bring on the fun…..I couldn’t help myself. The other day as I visited my favorite grocery store I noticed the boxes and boxes of pumpkins just waiting to be chosen for some ones Halloween fun.

Even though I have kids that are getting older and one will even leave home this year, I just had to buy some pumpkins to carve into Jack’ O lanterns.

I also bought some apples and some caramel to make caramel apples. I figure if I bribe them with a yummy sweet treat that they might actually get involved in the pumpkin carving fun.

One of my favorite ways to make jack o lanterns is very fast, inexpensive and not messy at all. I buy colored foam sheets and pipe cleaners from the dollar store.

We make hair, eyes, noses, and mouths that are funny, scary, and very noticeable from the street. Because this is fast and easy it is a great way to have small children participate, but because older kids often are so busy and want to limit their time doing an activity like this, it is also perfect for them.

I am going to let my son include his girlfriend in this activity because I know that it will keep him around longer if she is here with us. I may even ask them to go to the dollar store and buy the supplies. This helps them feel like they have ownership in the project and I think they will have more fun with it that way.

For those of you who are doing a Senior Scrapbook along with me, this would make a great October scrap page. You may even want to have your Senior invite a group of kids over to carve pumpkins and make caramel apples, take lots of pictures and then do a page or two just around this activity. While I am at it I will scrap some of my other children too! Might as well scrap the whole family!

Here are some other ideas for fun when friends come over to participate in your Halloween activities, plus these are great ideas to photograph and scrap too!

It would be fun to have this group of kids make doughnuts and decorate them! Want more ideas? Then see this article: Making Halloween Doughnuts and Scrapping the Recipe!

And since it is fall, you might add photos of rake up leaves and jump into the piles.

If you don’t have leaves in your yard, have them go to a local park or better yet a neighbors and when they are done they can do some service for the neighbors and clean up the leaves for them.

Football and Digital Scrapbooking

Who can think about September without thinking about football? In our home football is something we eat drink and sleep. Not the NFL teams so much, but our hometown football team.

Our son is a Senior this year. He is a starter on our High School Football team that my husband happens to coach.

So this year I think it is a great idea to add a football page to his Senior scrapbook that I am making to surprise him at the end of the year. This will be the September section in the scrapbooking album.

I will add a few digital scrapbooking pages in this section of the album.

I think it would be fun to add some old photos that I scanned of him when he was a little boy dressing up and playing football and include his current photo too! See the info on the mobile scanner towards the bottom of this article!

He has always loved the sport! And I think he will enjoy seeing old photos in his special album along the new ones too!

As I scrap my September pages I am going to focus on his Senior football picture. I am so excited for this page. I may even add a picture of him in his letterman’s jacket.

I know that September is going to be one of my favorite months to scrap for him. With back to school Senior pictures and football photos as the first two or three pages in the album I can’t go wrong!

I think I will do some extra fun digital scrapping and use some sports brushes (Sports Custom Brush Set) in Elements to make my digital pages! See what my scrap page looks like after I have scrapped with some custom brushes. The Go Team is a custom brush too!

It also makes me so excited for what is to come in my digital scrapbooking adventure of scrapping a couple of pages for my son’s album.

Next month I am looking forward to the homecoming dance and Halloween activities.

Each month is going to go by so fast, however I refuse to let them just slip away as I am saving these precious memories by digital scrapbooking them.

So bring on the Senior activities and GO RAMS! (or whatever you favorite team may be).

So, in this article we are going to talk about taking this same scrapped notebook and turn it into a digital book you can email to your grandchild!

Ok, let’s take you through the steps:

Make a Personalized Notebook and turn it into a digital notebook: Here’s how!

Now the first few steps will be similar to what we whether we have a printer print a hard copy version or if we plan to send a digital version. So we will review the steps and then tell you what is different! But it is nice to remember that when you digitally scrap you can scrap once and then process the final results in so many ways! That saves time and gives more options over traditional scrapbooking!

Step 1: Gather you photos for your digital scrapbooking project

Step 2: Pick you digital scrapbooking supplies. You can use any digital scrap supplies you want but I want to make it fast so I am going to use a Quick Page Kit. Quick Pages are pre-design scrapbooking pages that you just add your photos and text and you are done! Really! It is that easy! This will make it easy and fast to make this project for my grandson. Plus if I use the 8.5×11” Quick Pages then it will work perfect for sending to an online printing company to bind and finish my project! See the Scrap kit I used below:

Step 3: Start Digital Scrapping your cover page for your notebook. You can use Photoshop or Photoshop Elements to create a fun personalized cover for your notebook. My grandson is a year old so I will make mine a coloring book. But older children might like a personalized notebook with line so they can write in it like a journal. Decide what is best for your grandchild then create it in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements and scrap it!

In the image above I will take my photos and add them to the Quick Page using Photoshop Elements, then I will add some text, and be done!

This will be the cover page.

We will talk about the inter pages later in this article.

Notes for making a cover for older kids: If you are making this project for an older child then you might want to use photos of the child doing their favorite sport, or hobby, or a photo of them with their friends could be a big hit!

Now, this is the apart that changes from the article before. Instead of sending to an online printer, make some other pages for your notebook.

Step 4: Scrap all of the other digital scrapbooking note or coloring pages for the digital book. Since we are not sending our book out to the printer who just needs our scrapped cover page, making a digital notebook we will have to make the other pages. These pages can be blank or have a few scrap items on them. It is easy to make other digital  pages for a notebook or coloring book using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.

I just bring my items into Elements (or Photoshop), like digital photos, the digital scrapbooking papers, embellishments and type a few words to personalize and I am ready to make all the pages for the notebook or coloring page! Did you know that you can turn your digital scrapbooking custom brushes into your very own coloring pages for your kids? You are not alone… many people don’t know about this simple brush trick!

Custom brushes are easy to use, and once you get into digital scrapbooking, you will absolutely love them! If you use a brush that looks more like line art (instead of more solid-looking digital brush) then you can enlarge the size of the brush, stamp it on a digital page, and then print it out for a home-made coloring page!

Step 5: Once you have all the pages for your notebook or coloring book then you can turn it into a PDF digital album that can be opened up in Acrobat Reader.

Turn the scrap pages into a Digital Scrapbooking notebook or coloring book in PDF format and then email to family and friends.

It will save me money on printing, shipping boxes, and postage when I turn my digital scrapbooking notebook or coloring book into a PDF digital book and email it to my grandchild.

Then when you grandchild get’s the notebook or coloring book in their email inbox, they can then print it out and start using it.

Here is an  images of some of the inside pages in my grandson’s emailed digital coloring book. You can see he has some place to scribble and I added some personalization too! Now his mom can print it out and he can start enjoying it right away!

The SAT, ACT have been taken and all of the colleges are sending him pamphlets. He says things like: next time I will (Oh, there won’t be a next time), or at this time next year I will be so relieved to be done and how about, I am so ready to be out of here. This is all natural and part of the growing up process I have to remind myself.

Some of my friends reminded me that this is a time to be cherished. Not for me, but for him. I have been looking for ways that I can celebrate along with him, ways that will last long after the celebration of graduation is over. Ways that as a mother and son we can look back and celebrate the progression of our lives. Ways that we can celebrate the “becoming” of who we are supposed to become.

I had to enjoy a good laugh as my daughter shared this experience. She has a friend that has a mother that is one of the most popular teachers at the High School they attend. On this girls birthday her mother brought a camera and started taking pictures of everything and everyone at the school. She pulled lots of different groups of people together to take pictures. These shots are priceless. As I look at them on Facebook, I can see the embarrassment on this girls face as her mother tells everyone to smile for the camera. I can see that everyone else in the picture is enjoying being caught in a shot that will become a very fun memory for this girl and her mother in the future. I decided immediately that since my husband also works at the school that I would have him do this on our kids birthdays. What a fabulous way to preserve memories. Now, I realize that not everyone has a parent that works at the school. Why not have a trusted friend of your child’s take pictures around campus that day. Then you can put a terrific birthday scrapbook together for your child. I think that this is a fabulous way of celebrating.

My son also is going through sadness over that fact that most of his best friends that are a year older than he is will be graduating this year. I half jokingly remind him that this just gives him a greater opportunity to meet and date the younger girls. As would be expected, this only gives him small comfort. His very best friend for the past six years has been a girl that will graduate and is moving away right after High School. I know that his heart will be empty without her constant positive attitude, priceless ability to make him feel important, and her creative mind that seems have an endless amount of fun activities that she plans and includes so many people in.

She gave me a great idea of how to celebrate with him. For Christmas this year she brought him a collage of pictures of them together. She included many different activities. One of my favorites was the picture of him escorting her (the Homecoming Queen) as she took her royal walk down the isle in front to the school. Another was a picture of a group of them making cookies. Another picture was disappointing to me as I couldn’t tell what it was, but he quickly explained the memory to me. The picture was dark and I could only see shadows, but it was obviously a fun memory for him as he knew just what it was. (One idea fix your photos  – get some training for that!)

As a mom I began thinking that it is important for us “moms” to remind our kids to take lots of pictures of their High School Activities. That way, these celebrations will be preserved and there will be enough pictures that we won’t have to count on the shadowy ones. Maybe, however, if we do have a shadowy picture, we can lighten it with our Photoshop magic. I am going to give it a try.

This year I will make sure my son has a camera on hand, cell phones work well. I am also going to start the celebration pictures earlier with my other children.

Hopefully this article will give you a couple of new ideas to help you celebrate who you and your children are becoming.

This series was inspired because my only grandchild lives too far away to visit more than a couple of times a year, and I was try to find ways to say close him.

I thought if I wrote articles about how to stay close  even when you lived far-away then I find ways to help me develop a relationship with my grandson that is miles away! However, you don’t have to live far away to use the ideas – and you don’t even have to be a grandmother – you can be a grandfather, a parent or even a school teacher might be able to use these ideas too!

So here is what I did!

Step 1: Sent a Halloween Surprise early in October

Recently I sent by mail a Halloween Surprise for my grandson that I scheduled to arrive October 1st, that way he would have lots of time to enjoy  it, and I would have lots of time to get loads of great photos from my daughter!

He is a baby so I sent a Halloween PJ outfit, a pumpkin basket filled with baby tools, and a Halloween book for baby.

Step 2: Scrapped the Photos

so, when the photos started coming in my email from my daughter of all the Halloween Surprises I had sent, then I started scrapping these photos. First, I chose a fun Halloween digital scrapbooking kit like The Halloween Spider Book Digital Scrapbooking Kit which is a digital scrapbooking kit that features 12 Halloween Spider-inspired digital papers, and lots of Halloween embellishments!

I picked the orange supplies first, as my grandson seems to really like the color orange!

I used Photoshop Elements to arrange the supplies and photos.

I even used the selection tools to remove the background from the photos and insert my grandson in to the digital scrapbooking page!

It was fun to scrap him and his Halloween book I sent him!

Being a grandma is so fun!

Next, I got some extra digital supplies like the Halloween Sticker Embellishment Set and scrapped more fun Halloween pages.

And, it will save me money on printing, shipping boxes, and postage when I turn my digital scrapbooking Halloween Book into a PDF album and email it to my grandson, and other friends and family.

As more seniors go online each day and learn about computers, they soon learn that they can do more with their computers and their abilities grow greatly each day.

Net-savvy seniors can do many things that keep them connected  to others like getting and sending emails, sending and getting photos of grandchildren.  Being connected with others on Facebook and other social networking sites. They can investigate medical symptoms, shop, pay bills and even book their dream getaways!

Here are some tips that might be helpful if you are a senior and want to start this hobby, or if you want to give the gift of digital scrapbooking to a special senior in your life.

Making it Easy to Learn Digital Scrapbooking in 3 Steps:

To get started in digital scrapbooking you need 3 things (besides a computer): a graphic computer program, like Photoshop or Photoshop Elements; you need training so that you know how to use these programs and digital scrapbooking techniques within them; and you need digital scrapbooking supplies to scrap with.

So, let’s take each of these items and break them down into manageable steps:

Step 1: Buy Graphic Software(Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Photoshop Elements) in order to begin digital scrapbooking. Here are some ideas to keep in mind when selecting graphic software:

• Pick a graphic program that has good features and a solid brand that won’t go out of business next year (a bad brand could mean losing all your scrapbooking pages!). Adobe’s Photoshop or Photoshop Elements are the leading graphic programs with a very good history of being a solid, reliable brand with lots of features perfect for digital scrapbookers. • If your senior is less familiar with computers, you might want to consider Photoshop Elements rather than Photoshop (see this article: Photoshop vs…….. Photoshop Elements. Photoshop Elements is a more user-friendly version of Photoshop and definitely more cost effective than Photoshop! Photoshop Elements is still a powerful graphic program and actually has several additional features for digital scrapbookers that Photoshop doesn’t even have! Plus, if your senior ever wants to upgrade to Photoshop, then learning Elements will help you more easily make the transition.
• Those that are newer to computers, like those that are only used to using email and a basic word processing program might want to consider getting Photoshop Elements 7 rather than the newer Photoshop Elements 8. Both programs are very similar, but Photoshop Elements 8 has a new feature that can make it frustrating to someone new to using computers and just learning digital scrapbooking. However, if your senior is comfortable with a computer, uses several different kinds of computer programs, and knows how or would feel comfortable using shortcut keys, then by all means, get them the latest version of Photoshop Elements 8  as it does have a few other new features that are nice to have. Both programs are about $75 and you can find  rebates that make the price closer to $50! See these deals: Photoshop Elements 7 or Photoshop Elements 8.

Step 2: Digital Scrapbook Training using Photoshop Elements or Photoshop.They will need training that not only teaches how to use Elements or Photoshop software, but also training that covers digital scrapbooking too.

This Training  assumes the person knows little about both the graphic program and digital scrapbooking, so it starts right at the beginning! This is perfect for the person new to graphics programs and digital scrapbooking!

Why do I think Grandmothers or Grandfathers would like to develop a Digital Scrapbooking or Photo Editing Hobby? Well, I was surprised when I first started teaching “in-person” digital scrapbooking classes because most of my classes filled up with senior citizens. I guess I imagined my classes would bring in loads of new moms interested in digitally scrapping their babies and infants.

But lots of times mom’s are to busy, and grandmothers (or grandfathers) especially if they are retired can help preserve family history and also digitally scrap their grandchildren too!

As surprising as it was to me that my first classes filled up with more seniors than new moms, the seniors absolutely thrived with this new hobby!  Both men and women in that age group were interested in learning and did incredibly well. They even came into class as couples and wanted to learn about digital scrapbooking and photo editing together! It was wonderful and I really enjoyed teaching the classes.

I discovered that seniors came to the class because they wanted to know more about computers, in addition to learning a new hobby. They wanted to scrap all the digital photos that their children were emailing them of their grandchildren! They also wanted to scrap the personal photos of family, friends, places, and times that were very special. They wanted to preserve  the greater family history that only they could write and scrap about!

Also, they wanted to share their hobby with other family members too. When a grandparent has a hobby like digital scrapbooking it also connects them to the future, sharing scrapbooking with their children, grandchildren and friends. Some grandparents even teach digital scrapbooking to their grandchildren too!

Many seniors discover that they really enjoy digital scrapbooking and that it is a fun and exciting hobby for them once they get started.

Photoshop Elements is still a powerful graphic program and actually has several additional features for digital scrapbookers that Photoshop doesn’t even have! Plus, if your senior ever wants to upgrade to Photoshop, then learning Elements will help you more easily make the transition.
• Those that are newer to computers, like those that are only used to using email and a basic word processing program might want to consider getting Photoshop Elements 7 rather than the newer Photoshop Elements 8. Both programs are very similar, but Photoshop Elements 8 has a new feature that can make it frustrating to someone new to using computers and just learning digital scrapbooking. However, if your senior is comfortable with a computer, uses several different kinds of computer programs, and knows how or would feel comfortable using shortcut keys, then by all means, get them the latest version of Photoshop Elements 8  as it does have a few other new features that are nice to have.
