Valentine Cooking, then Scrapping it and sending it as a Valentine Card or Recipe Book! (Originally posted 2/11/11 by Cheri Barlow)

This year I want to try something new! Instead of sending Valentine cards to my family and friends I want to send them a Digital Recipe Album that I could email.

It would save me a bit of money, I could send it last moment, and everyone seems to love getting photos and surprises via email!

I might even print out a few scrap recipes on my home printer and include it in a special Valentine’s cookie plate that I give away!

What every I do it will be fun to scrap my Valentine recipes and then email them or wrap them up with Valentine treats! So see following and get some ideas that you might be able to use this Valentines too!

Scrap a Valentine Recipe Book, Card, or Printed Recipe!

Here how to do it!

First, find some yummy Valentine recipes or pull out some of your favorites.

If you don’t have any, here are few to get you started!

Get Photos for Scrapbooking:

Next, once you have the recipes you would like to scrap, make the recipe and get some photos of the food.

For example, I like to take photos at the beginning of the cooking or baking process.

I like to scrap the steps and add these into the scrapbooking project!

I think it is fun to see how the recipe was made and send this part of the process to family and friends too!

I then photograph the middle of the baking or cooking of the recipe too, I like seeing it just before it is fully cooked. I take a lot of photos knowing only a few will make it into my Recipe Book.

At last I like to scrap the end results of making the recipe.

It is fun to a scrap the progression of the recipe and even scrap people eating the food.

Once I get the photos so that I can scrap my Valentine’s Recipe Book ready then, I get some digital scrapbooking supplies that can be made into a Recipe book or just print one page at a time to give away as a gift with your cookie plate. Next, start scrapping your recipes in a graphic program like Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.

Decide if you are going to make a whole recipe book or just one page to accompany your Valentine goodies.

Make a Cover for your Recipe Book

If you are going to make a Valentine Recipe Book then you will want to make a cover scrap page and then scrap several of your favorite Valentine Recipes.

Scrap the other pages in the recipe book too!

If you are going to only scrap a recipe page to go with your treats then take photos of the goodies and then scrap those photos and the recipe page. Include the recipe scrap page with the goodies so whoever gets your treats also gets the recipes too!

Then, turn your Recipe Page or Book into a PDF that you can Email as a valentine card!

Take your recipe book or page and turn it into a PDF file, that can easily be email it to your friends and family – this saves money and gets your recipes out to your loved ones quickly!

Turning it into a PDF album is easy in Photoshop Elements. Here is how you do it.

First, load all your final scrapbooking pages you want in the album into Photoshop Elements the workspace or use the Organizer. Pick the PDF option. After that follow the menu and make your selections. Once you have finalized your selections Photoshop Elements will make a PDF file that you can email to your family and friends! Learn how to turn just one page or multiple pages in to the PDF format that most everyone can read with Adobe’s FREE Acrobat Reader for PDF formatted documents. Also learn how to make a PDF that can work like a slideshow and show case your digital scrapbooking pages

So there you have it — now you can turn your favorite Valentine Recipe into a Digital Scrapbooking Recipe Page to share with family and friends when you deliver your special treat this Valentines day!

Or you can turn a whole bunch of Valentine Recipes into a Recipe book that you print out, have a professional online printer bind in a book or you can even email the Recipe book in PDF format to your family and friends this Valentines!

Email Valentine Recipe Books instead of Cards this Year!

I think I will email my Valentine’s Recipe book instead of a card this year!

Make and send your child to school with a fun Groundhog Day joke!

Sometimes we want our children to know we are thinking of them and a love note isn’t the only way. How about a fun joke or a riddle instead of note?

However, don’t just jot something down, scrap it and make it extra fun and special! What a nice surprise for Groundhog Day!

Here’s how to do it! Plus, this article will also tell you about some Groundhog jokes to get you started below!

Step 1: Open up your Scrapbooking Program like Photoshop or Elements and Use a template and Scrap Several Jokes at once!

Add your scrapbooking papers to to make a background on your joke cards. My example below is scrapping my joke card in Photoshop Elements, and using this scrap kit ~ Groundhog Digital Scrapbooking Kit 2 Make several Joke cards at once!

Also, I am using the Place Card Template from this Training to make my joke cards. The easiest way to do this is by using a special template like the place card template that is the perfect size for making joke or riddle cards for lunch box surprises.

How to Make Place Cards (and More) using Photoshop Elements is a fabulous way to learn how to make your own place cards for dinner parties, gift cards for presents, notes to put into lunch boxes, and so much more! Bonus: Digital Scrapbooking Supplies, Custom Brushes, and Photoshop Place Card Template are all included in this training too!

There are many ways to use the included place card template which can be used for jokes, riddles and brain teaser cards too!

Step 3: In Photoshop or Elements Scrap by adding Embellishments to your your Scrap Joke Cards

Start adding embellishments to joke cards, by making more than one at a time you can give out several leading up to the holiday or one for each of your children!

Step 3: Type the Joke (riddle, poem or brain teaser) into Photoshop or Photoshop Elements using the Text Tool to make it special.

Write the joke question on the front (see image above) of the scrapped card. With the answer in the inside!

For the answer either handwrite the answer inside or scrap answers on another template and turn your page over and print answer other side of the paper so it will be on the inside of the card

Bonus Idea: Make Personalized Joke Cards!
The great thing about scrapping your own customized joke cards is that you can customize the look, the saying, and even add a photo of your child and their name to the joke card!

Step 4: Print your joke cards, cut them, fold them. After you have created the perfect joke cards then print them out!

After they are printed, then cut each one out! Then fold them!

You can see that the Question is on the front of the card and the answer is in the inside of the card.

You can either print the page double sided or print two pages and cut and paste the answer inside – either way makes this fun and doesn’t give away the answer before your child has a chance to guess it!

Now you have a couple of jokes for a few days! Or you can put one into each of your children’s lunch boxes or put out along side a afternoon snack to celebrate Groundhog Day!

It will be such a nice surprise when they open their lunch box and find a fun joke or riddle!

Make Groundhog Cookies:

Have you been thinking about making Groundhog Day special with baking a groundhog cookie? How about baking, cookies, and then scrapping the recipe or even make a recipe books? Get recipes and digital scrapbooking ideas in this article!

So here is the official groundhog cookie recipe and below is a Gluten Free version.

Here is the Recipe from the Official Groundhog Website and The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club!

Groundhog Cookies Recipe

2 cups sifted flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 cup soft butter
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup molasses
1 egg yolk
1 egg, slightly beaten
Currants or raisins

Sift together first seven ingredients. Set aside. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Blend in molasses and yolk. Stir in flour mixture and mix well. Form into a ball.Wrap in plastic wrap. Chill overnight, several nights or freeze. Place small amounts of dough on a sheet of plastic wrap, and cover with plastic wrap.

Roll 1/8 inch thick. Cut out cookies with lightly floured cutter.Place cookies on greased baking sheet. Brush with slightly beaten egg. Decorate with currants or raisin eyes. Repeat until all dough is used.Bake 8 to 10 minutes in a preheated 350-degree oven. Cool slightly before removing from cookie sheet. Makes 72 or more medium-sized groundhogs.

Just because you have an allergy doesn’t mean you should have to miss out on the fun! Try a gluten free version!

Here is a revised Gluten Free version I made:

Gluten Free Groundhog Cookies

2 cups mixed all purpose gluten free flour (If your GF flour mix does not have xanthan gum then add 1/2 tsp. to this recipe)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon gluten free baking powder
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 cup soft butter or non-dairy alternative, room temperature (e.g. Earth Balance Buttery Sticks)
1 cup sugar (Try Beet Sugar if Allergic to Cane Sugar)
1/2 cup 100% pure (or gluten free) molasses
1 egg yolk (or egg substitute like Ener-G EggReplacer)
1 egg, slightly beaten (or egg substitute like Ener-G EggReplacer)
Currants or raisins

Sift together first seven ingredients. Set aside. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Blend in molasses and yolk. Stir in flour mixture and mix well. Form into a ball. Wrap in plastic wrap. Chill overnight, several nights or freeze. Place small amounts of dough on a sheet of plastic wrap, and cover with plastic wrap. Roll 1/8 inch thick. Cut out cookies. You can make a party of it! Make your cookies, sandwiches and enjoy a nice groundhog movie like Groundhog Day to celebrate the day!

Holiday Cookies and Digital Scrapbooking

The holidays are a wonderful time to bake your Christmas and Holiday cookies and share your baked treasures with family and friends.

This year try scrapping the recipe to go along with the goodies you deliver to your loved ones! Like the Peppermint Meringues with Chocolate Filling Cookies that are scrapped in the image to the left!

Here are the some things to keep in mind when you make this wonderful gift.

Tip 1: Plan ahead and Pick out the Cookie Recipe ahead. Use a family recipe or try an exciting new cookie recipe.

Here some fun recipes your might want to try:

Get photos of baking, frosting, putting in baskets on holiday plates and even photos of your family helping or eating them too!

Tip 3: Pick out your digital scrapbooking pages. Do you want to make a more traditional 12×12” scrapbooking page?  Do you want to print it out using your home printer and use the 8.5×11” sized pages? Do you want to just make one page or do you want to make a whole recipe book?

First if you want to make a scrapbooking page that is the traditional scrapbooking page 12×12” you have lots of choices for digital scrapbooking kits like “Let it Snow!” Scrapbooking Kit that was used to make this sugar cookie star cookies recipe scrap page.

The nice thing about this size is that you can have the page printed by a professional printing company or at home on a large scale printer and add it to your regular scrapbooking albums. Second, another solution for easy printing is to pick digital scrapbooking kits that have paper that works well with home printers like (8.5×11” or 11×8.5”) paper size. Using these digital papers makes it very easy to print out your recipe scrap page and include with your cookie plate very easy!

Like this Gingerbread People recipe scrapbooking page would be easy to print on my home printer, and I could put with the cookie gift plate. Hot Cocoa, Digital Scrapbooking, and Winter Memories

From mochas to lattes, the office coffee pot to the local Starbucks, coffee is a popular beverage first thing in the morning, as an afternoon pick-me-up, or a great way to stay alert with dessert. In December, coffee becomes even more exciting as all kinds of limited-time-only seasonal coffee flavors and creamers begin to show up from gingerbread to white chocolate with peppermint.

And even though I’m normally a huge coffee-buff, I have to admit, for me, nothing beats a delicious cup of hot cocoa on a cold winter day. But your regular old coco mix, no that just won’t cut it. No. Real December hot cocoa calls for real chocolate, real sugar, whole milk and some real cream!

So, loving to cook, bake, and experiment with food. I decided to seek out the best hot cocoa recipe that I could find. I searched on the internet and found two hot chocolate recipes that made my mouth water!

The first recipe is from the Food Network by The Barefoot Contessa: Hot Cocoa

Ingredients:

• 2 1/2 cups whole milk
• 2 cups half-and-half
• 4 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped
• 4 ounces milk chocolate, chopped
• 1 tablespoon sugar
• 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
• 1 teaspoon instant espresso or coffee powder (add this, Coffee-lovers, for the best of both worlds!)
• 4 to 5 vanilla beans or cinnamon sticks, for garnish

Directions:

Heat the milk and half-and-half in a saucepan on medium heat to just below the simmering point. Remove the pan from the heat and add both chocolates. When the chocolates are melted, add the sugar, vanilla extract, and espresso and whisk vigorously. Reheat gently and serve immediately. Use a vanilla bean or cinnamon stick to garnish each serving.

The second recipe is from All Recipes.com by Diana S: Snow Flake Hot Cocoa

Ingredients:

• 2 cups whipping cream
• 6 cups milk
• 1 teaspoon vanilla
• 1 (12 ounce) package white chocolate chips
• Garnish:
• Whipped cream
• Candy canes

Directions:

1. Stir together the whipping cream, milk, vanilla, and white chocolate chips in a slow cooker.

2. Cover and cook on low for 2 to 2 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally, until mixture is hot and chocolate chips are melted. Stir again before serving. Garnish with whipped cream and candy canes, as desired.

I always take photos of each food or drink-creation that I make. I love making my own cookbooks and recipe books filled with recipes that I love and real photos of the cooking process or final results!

My mom and I started our own tradition of calling each other once a week and making a new recipe together on the phone. This is a great way for us to have fun together, talk, and learn how to make new dishes together since we live so far away from one another. Holiday Rolls a Way to Scrap Recipes to Save them for Family and Friends

What would Thanksgiving be without homemade rolls? For me the rolls are my favorite part of a holiday dinner.

I loved them and my mother made great rolls while her children were growing up but at that point in my life I didn’t want to learn how to make them and so…..I didn’t.

A few years later I really regretted it because my mom’s health had deteriorated to the point that she couldn’t bake anymore and couldn’t show me how to bake yummy rolls. Now I had the desire and no one to show me that is until I met my friend Janette.

Janette is an older woman that took me under her wing and looked out for me for a few years when my children were little and I had all of the challenges that young motherhood brings.

One of the many things that Janette taught me was how to make her Parker House Roll recipe.

It is so much easier that I had imagined and I would love to share this recipe with any of you that may need a fabulous roll recipe that you can be confident will produce beautiful rolls.

I used to just save my recipes on handwritten cards – but have since realized that this type of keeping a recipe will probably over time be lost.

Instead I have decide to take my favorite recipes like this Holiday roll recipe and scrap them!

If I scrap them and put them in a recipe album it makes it easier to pass them on to my children or give the recipes to family and friends

I can add photos and scrap pages with the whole recipe,  and put on a recipe like the Holiday Rolls. Another way is to take photos of each of the steps and scrap the information on how to make the recipe step by step too!

The nice part is since it is digital, I can make it once and give it to as many people as I like! I can email my digital scrapbooking recipes to everyone, or I can print out copies for family and friends too!

It is easy to make lasting memories and keep your recipes preserved when you digital scrap them!

One digital scrapbooking kit I like to use for Thanksgiving recipes is the Fall Foliage Digital Scrapbooking Kit 2 because it comes with digital recipe cards, a digital pen, and fall embellishments like colorful leaves and fall colored digital papers. This is the kit I used to scrap the recipe pages on this blog.

Holiday Roll Recipe

Here is the recipe and the process for making the rolls that make my holiday dinner special.

Mix the following ingredients in a large bowl, I use the large Tupperware bowl

3 Cups of Milk
1 Cup of real butter (it is important that you use real butter)
Microwave 7-8 minutes or until butter melts
Add 1 more cup of milk to the hot mixture
1 Cup Sugar
1 Tablespoon Salt

Mix well and Dump 6 Cups of flour in the liquid mixture. Make a well with a spoon in the flour and add

4 eggs and 3 Tablespoon Quick Rising Yeast so that they rest in the flour

Begin Mixing (you may use a regular hand mixer)

Continue to add flour up to 12 Cups until you have a nice consistency. When you have added about 9 cups of flour you might want to mix with a wooden spoon. When the dough is mixed well, let it sit and rise until double. This normally takes 1 ½ to 2 hour. Punch the dough down and raise another 45 minutes to 1 hour.

On a clean cutting board or counter top sprinkle a thin layer of flour. Divide the dough into three sections and roll the dough out one section at a time and cut the dough out in a circle shape. I use a large plastic cup or glass mug to cut my rolls out. While you are cutting the rolls out, set a large cookie sheet on the stove and melt 3 Tablespoon of real butter on a low heat. Then when you are finished cutting out the dough take each circle and set it in the melted butter and flip it over, fold it in half and flip it over again. Form the dough into a crescent shape and pinch the dough shut by pressing down with your fingers. Lay the crescent shapes so they are touching each other slightly on the sides, front, and back. I lay 4 rolls across and 7 rolls down. This recipe makes 5 dozen rolls. Leftover rolls freeze nicely to use with a future meal.

Let the dough rise about 1 hour and bake on 400 for 11-13 minutes.

Use this Recipe to make a variation – Orange Rolls:

I also enjoy Orange Rolls. To make this option, grate an orange peeling into a bowl and add a half cup of white sugar.

Make the same as you would the rolls but before folding the roll in half place a small teaspoon of the sugar mixture on the roll.

These are good as a treat or a dinner roll.

Use this Same Recipe for Even More kinds of Holiday Rolls!

One of the best things about this recipe is that there are so many optional treats that you can make with the dough.

My favorites are Brown Sugar and Butter cakes that I serve with whipped topping on Christmas morning and Orange Rolls that go great with any celebration dinner.

After the circles of dough have been cut out in the basic roll recipe, you can either mix the dough back together so that you can make more rolls or you can set the scraps of dough off to the side to make brown sugar cakes for breakfast or a treat.

Spray Cooking Spray in a pan and lay the sections of scraps of dough together like a puzzle. Make a thumbprint in the pieces and dot the scraps with a small piece of butter and a dab of Brown sugar. Let rise and bake on 400 for 11 – 13 minutes. Served hot with Whipped Cream on top.

These are an especially wonderful treat to share with your friends and neighbors on a cold winter evening.

You can even make this same recipe into cinnamon rolls, just  by adding melted butter, cinnamon sugar, raisins and nuts when you first roll out the dough, but don’t cut into circles. Then roll the dough up, and cut into 1/2 inch slices. Put in each slice in a pan like the basic roll recipe and then let raise and bake.

If the pumpkin opening is a bit too small for the bowl, carefully shave the inside edge with a spoon. Finish by filling the bowl with ice and bottled drinks.

If you are in San Diego this Fall take a drive to Julian about 50 miles from San Diego city, but worth the drive; as the road meanders scenic country with cows and horses grazing in fields. Turn Lemons into Lemonade and Make a Digital Recipe Book

Ever since I wrote the blog ~ (Got a Good Lemonade Recipe? Or a Great Quick Page for Digital Scrapping Fast?) I have been obsessed with gathering lemonade recipes!

It all started when I went to visit my daughter in Nashville and they had a heat wave. All I could think about was drinking lemonade to cool off!

After I had gathered some basic lemonade recipes and several very interesting recipes then I decided to scrap them and make a digital recipe book!

I thought that I could keep a copy of the digital recipe book on my computer, and print one out to keep in the kitchen every time I want to make lemonade. Since my daughter lives in Tennessee where lemonade is especially good on the porch in the hot weather, I thought I would email her a copy too!

First, the digital recipe book needs good lemonade recipes!

Next step in building my lemonade recipe book is to get some digital scrapbooking supplies!

I wanted to quickly make my recipe book so to make things easier I got the The Lemonade Stand Quick Page Kit 1 8.5×11″. This kit already had a lemonade theme and because it has pre-designed scrapbooking pages with recipe cards, all I needed to do was to add my photos, and type some recipes in!

Yes, it was that easy!!!

Also, I wanted to make some coordinating scrap pages that were a bit more personalized so I also used the the Lemonade Stand Digital Scrapbooking Kit 2 (11×8.5″) too!

This kit is filled with lemons and other citrus inspired digital papers and embellishments so it really worked well with the quick page kit! Using both of these kits helped me scrap my recipes for my digital album!

Next step, Scrap the digital scrapbooking recipe pages. It is easy to make get digital scrapbooking pages using Photoshop Elements.

I just bring my digital photos, a Quick Page, some digital scrapbooking supplies, and type a few words, or recipes to personalize and I am ready to make the next digital scrapbooking recipe page!

I make a cover page with the title of my recipe book, and then I make several recipes pages, and sometimes I include a closing page with a personal message!

Then, Turn my scrap pages into a Digital Scrapbooking Recipe Book in PDF format and email to family and friends. It will save me money on printing, shipping boxes, and postage when I turn my digital scrapbooking recipe book into a PDF album and email it to friends and family.

These pages were easy and fast to make and now I plan to send this Lemonade Digital Recipe Book to my daughter in Nashville! I think she will enjoy it as the weather is even hotter than when I was visiting her! And who knows maybe she will even try some of the recipes!

More Great Lemonade Recipes for your Digital Recipe Recipe Book!

Low-Sugar Lemonade (Makes 4 drinks) ~ from Yahoo Health
5 lemons
1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
1/4 cup maple syrup
1 quart sparkling water
1 handful mint sprigs

To make one small pitcher:

• Juice 4 of the lemons; slice the other lemon and set aside.
• Blend juice with applesauce and maple syrup. Stir in sparkling water.
• Pour mixture into large pitcher over ice. Garnish with lemon slices and mint sprigs and serve. (80 calories per serving)

Cherry Lemonade (Serves 6 to 8 ) ~ from Martha Stewart
1 3/4 cups freshly squeezed lemon juice, about 12 lemons
1 cup sugar
3 quarts cold water
1 pound fresh cherries, pitted

To make one small pitcher:

• In a gallon container, combine lemon juice and sugar, stirring until sugar is dissolved.
• Stir in 3 quarts cold water and cherries until combined.
• Fill glasses with ice, pour in cherry lemonade, and serve.

Lemonade with Blueberries (Makes 2 quarts) ~ from Martha Stewart
3 cups fresh lemon juice, about 20 lemons
2 cups superfine sugar
Blueberries

To make one small pitcher:

• Pour lemon juice through a fine sieve into a large pitcher.
• Add sugar; stir until dissolved. Stir in 1 quart water.
• Add ice. Pour into glasses; sprinkle with berries.
