Ms. Digi Know will attempt to give you a great tip for Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, one tip at a time till she reaches 50 tips!

Today’s tip will cover how to change a filter that was repeated in Photoshop Elements and Photoshop! Or in other words, reapplying a Filter with Different Settings!

This tip works in both Photoshop and Photoshop Elements, as they work almost the same, but we will list the differences below.

Dear Blog Readers: You have been asking lots of questions this and that, but one of the biggest questions I get is to give you the best or hottest tips for using Photoshop or Elements in digital scrapbooking or photo editing projects! Recently, we talked about Tip 9: Repeat that Filter! So this tip is the next step!

This time we will start with Tip 10: how to Change a repeated Filter effect or reapplying a Filter with Different Settings in Photoshop Elements and Photoshop

First, let’s talk about using a filter in Digital Scrapbooking before we tell the secret tips!

So, lets say that you just edited your photo and applied a wonderful filter to enhance the image.

Now you want to apply the same filter so you use the shortcut key revealed in this blog article: Tip 9: Repeat that Filter!

Now you want to apply a different setting to your third image and still use shortcut keys instead of going through the menu.

Using the shortcut keys mentioned in [Tip 9: Repeat that Filter - press Ctrl + F (Mac: Command + F)] to reapply the filter with the same exact settings you used before is fine if you want to use the same settings over and over again, and there are times when you want to do just that.

So what’s next? …. Here is the secret tip!

However, there are times when you want to use a shortcut key to reapply a filter with different settings. This secret keyboard shortcut that many people don’t know about will let you do just that!

Press Ctrl + Alt + F (Mac: Command + Option + F). This opens the filter dialog of the last filter you’ve applied—with the previous settings, but you can always change them to whatever you need.

This shortcut tip works in Photoshop Elements or Photoshop!

You can also reapply filters to photos as well as digital scrapbooking supplies using the same shortcut key too!

Try this fun trick and see how it works on some of your projects!

And if you need a introduction to filters in general then read this article: Use a Filter on a photo or in a Digital Scrap Project using Photoshop Elements Or Photoshop

Have a very nice day,

One day you were digital scrapbooking, the next your time you opened Elements it is NOT was working correctly!

What do I mean? Well when I am digital scrapbooking I have set the preferences for floating windows. Which should look like this when I am digital scrapbooking.

As a digital scrapbooker this makes sense for me to have my workspace set up like this so I can have a better digital scrapbooking workflow. I have my scrap project on one side and my photos, embellishments, and WordArt on the other side so I can drag them to my digital scrap page

But one day I opened Photoshop Elements 9 and the floating windows were not working correctly, instead of floating so I can arrange them how I like, all the windows were tabbing together.

Each time I opened a new photo, digital embellishment or another digital scrapbooking supply in Photoshop Elements 9, everything combines into one window. Below are the same windows now all tabbed together, almost impossible for a digital scrapbooker to scrap!!

At first I thought something was just wrong with my Photoshop Elements 9, but later I discovered that after Photoshop Elements auto updated to 9.0.3 the new default setting was for my document windows was to open as a tabbed window instead of floating! No matter what I did I couldn’t get back my beloved floating windows whenever I opened a new item into the workspace!

Why?! Didn’t Adobe love digital scrapbookers anymore? Perhaps no-one there does digital scrapbooking? Are they all photo editors at Adobe? Is this why they changed the settings without telling me!!

So, I went online and found many other digital scrapbookers complaining about this too! I wasn’t alone but no-one at Adobe was changing their mind about this.

So if this has happened to your recently, no you are not crazy! Adobe changed the settings, it is not you – it is them!

While the photos can be separated again by window>image>float all in windows to minimize and clean up the workspace, this takes extra steps to undock those tabs now.

This is adding extra steps now, to get my windows apart from each other so I can start digital scrapbooking.

It never fails that just after I get everything separated and arranged to digital scrap that I remember I wanted one more embellishment and when I try to bring it into the workspace – it all snaps into each other and I have to pull out the images and arrange the workspace again!

Very frustrating! I know some people that have left Elements 9 for other software programs, or some that have switched back to Elements 7 that doesn’t have this problem. (Elements 8 has a variation of this problem too so you might have to go to Elements 7 to escape the tabbing windows!)

I can’t believe any digital scrapbooker being happy with this new feature!

So what does Adobe say about this problem?

Official Response from Photoshop Elements that I found:

While the 9.0.3 update is largely about dealing with some existing issues when using Wacom tablets with Photoshop Elements, a number of other small changes were introduced. Based on the feedback of some customers, the default behavior of opening new documents was changed so that they always open as tabbed, even when floating windows are enabled. We are not above reverting to the original behavior. Let us know your preferences on the subject.

It sounds like they want their customers to let them know what they think of this .. so if you can email Adobe and ask them to fix this problem do it! Maybe they will listen to us scrapbookers if we unite and let them know we don’t like this feature.

But, in the meantime what can we do to work around it.. if we can’t completely fix it?

So this is what I did, I finally re-installed Photoshop Elements 9 on one of my computers to get rid of the 9.0.3 update. It was a relief to find that my documents are now opening in floating windows again, and not tabs! Yay! However, now I have to spend time to reinstall all my brushes, effects and styles or any other personalization’s I have already done to my program. Plus make a copy of your organizer files too! I am worried about one day, my computer will update automatically and the pesky update will be back and I will have to re-install and set up all over again!

So after I did this I was too tired to do fix it on my laptop computer too! So I tried experimenting ways of dealing with the tabs. (I will add that this is not a great solution but I can use it till I have time to re-install)

Here is what I am doing on my computer that I didn’t re-install Elements yet. (Before I start I set the preferences to floating windows, then go to the icon below and select Float All in Windows) I do this first before I get started in my scrapbooking project.

Now, I bring 2 digital scrapbooking items into my workspace, and then pull each of them out into floating windows.

Then I click on the embellishment or photo to activate it. Then when I open a new embellishment it tabs into the stack of embellishments. And I can leave my digital scrapbooking project un-tabbed.

This works until I forget to keep clicking on the embellishment tabbed stack before I open anything new. Because the new item now tabs into my digital scrapbooking project, resizing it too! I know it is pain, but I don’t have time to uninstall and reinstall Elements 9 yet.

Now, I can drag the new items from the stack tabbed to my digital scrapbooking project or I can drag it from the project bin to my scrap project. You can double click on the item in the Project Bin to make it come to the top of the stack, so you can drag it over to the scrap project if you want to use the drag and drop method.

I admit this isn’t the best solution, but it does work around the problem.. sort of.

So far these are really the only solutions I have found to work-around Adobe’s update. If you have any others I would love to hear from you!

Now it takes at least 3 times more time to finish a digital scrapbooking project with this update problem. I hope the next update fixes this problem.

Until Adobe fixes Elements 9, don’t get too frustrated!

Happy Scrapping!

Ps. Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 is out now, and it seems like this problem is fixed if you set floating windows in preferences! Yay!!!

Ms. Digi Know will attempt to give you a great tip for Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, one tip at a time till she reaches 50 tips!

Today’s tip will cover how to stop those annoying tabbed windows in Photoshop Elements and Photoshop!

Dear Blog Readers: You have been asking lots of questions this and that, but one of the biggest questions I get is to give you the best or hottest tips for using Photoshop or Elements in digital scrapbooking or photo editing projects!

So here over the next few weeks I will try to give you 50 of my super secret or best tips for using Photoshop Elements or Photoshop in Digital Scrapbooking or Photo Editing. So by the time you are done with this special blog series you will have many helpful tips to use when you are working in Photoshop or Elements!

This time we will start with TIP 3: how to stop those annoying tabbed windows in Photoshop Elements and Photoshop.

First, let’s talk about the default settings then talk about how to change that. If you just installed Photoshop Elements or Photoshop then chance are the default setting is tabbed windows.

What this means to the digital scrapbooker, is that all the digital scrapbooking paper, embellishments, photos and supplies all load into the workspace of Photoshop Elements tabbed together. See the image above.

This is a problem for digital scrapbookers that are working a digital scrapbooking layout and want drag their supplies on to their scrap projects. Even photo editors may not like this default setting.

What works better is if each of the digital scrapbooking items comes into the workspace in individual windows. See the example below:

In this example above you can see your digital scrapbooking project and arrange the supplies easier because each item is in floating separate windows and not tabbed together!

So here is how you change the tab setting to floating windows!

Now, here how you do it in Photoshop Elements ……

To do this in Photoshop Elements:

In Photoshop Elements go to Edit>Preferences>General
(Mac Users: Photoshop Elements>Preferences>General)

Then when the menu box appears do this: Click Allow Floating Documents in Full Edit Mode, then click OK button

If you have already loaded items before setting these preference then your items will still be tabbed but new items you add will be floating in their own window that you can arrange. You can separate all of them by going to the top drop down menu and click Float All in Window.

This separates the tabs and puts each item in an individual floating window that can be arranged more easily for digital scrapbook layouts.

Special EXTRA TIP: if you move your windows to close to the top of any individual window then it will snap together and tab. You can keep that from happening by holding down the ctrl key as you move your window close to another one.

Also, if it does snap together just go to the tab and drag it out so it can be an individual window again.

Now you can finish your digital scrapbooking project!

Now you can use this same techniques in Photoshop to do the same things, ONLY a few small differences – see these below!

To do this in Photoshop:

Now let’s try this same task in Photoshop. In Photoshop it works much the same way with these differences.

In Photoshop go to Edit>Preferences>Interface
(Mac Users: Photoshop Elements>Preferences>Interface)

In Photoshop, UNCHECK Open Documents as Tabs, and Enable Floating Document Window Docking and then click the OK button

This allows each item in an individual floating window that can be arranged more easily for digital scrapbook layouts.

If you have already loaded items before setting these preference then your items will still be tabbed but new items you add will be floating in their own window that you can arrange. You can separate all of them by going to the top drop down menu and click Float All in Window.

Special EXTRA TIP in Photoshop: holding down the ctrl key as you move your window close to another one can snap them together in a tabbed window. If it does snap together and you want to separate them then just go to the tab and drag it out so it can be an individual window again.

How to Add a New Layer Below in Photoshop Elements

After you have been Digital Scrapbooking or Photo Editing for awhile then you are always excited to learn those little tips that save time or make the tasks in Photoshop Elements easier.

As a Digital Scrapbookers or as Photo Editors when we use Photoshop Elements all the time we often add a new layer to our projects.

For example, in this digital scrapbooking page below:

I have already added several items to make a digital scrap page. Now, I am going to add a new layer to put a digital ribbon on. So I click on the new Layer Button – see below:

If I just used Elements in the default way then the new layer would go on top of the active layer, and then when I made the ribbon on that new layer it would be on top of everything.

This is OK, but since the default of making a new layer goes on top, which means I will have to drag this new layer below to make it work right in my digital scrapbooking layout. (Because if I don’t drag it below then my ribbon covers up the flower embellishment).

However, if I would have used this handy little tip then I could have take out this last step because I could have added the New Layer below my active layer instead of the default above!

Here is how you do it!

Step 1: Click the layer you want to make active and that you want the New Layer to go below (See #1)

Step 2: Click the Create a new layer icon, but this time hold down the Control key (Mac Users: Command Key) as you click on the icon and it will add the new layer below the active layer. (See #2 above)

Now you can make your ribbon for your scrap page and it will be below the flower embellishment! No dragging below!!!

See how nicely this Quick Tip worked in digital scrapbooking to make it go faster! This same tip would work in photo editing task too!

Special Note: However, there is one time this quick tip doesn’t work. That is when you are in the background layer. If you use the shortcut key it will not put a layer below in this case.

However, you can override this default feature if you unlock this background layer then, the shortcut keys work to put a New Layer below the background layer!!!

Now the New Layer is below the background paper in this example!

Try this quick tip next time you are scrapbooking or photo editing and you might just fall in love with this tip and use it all the time!

Enjoy and happy scrapping!

So, today we will explain how to do have multiple views in PHOTOSHOP! Photoshop, can have multiple views of the same image or project! However, in Photoshop it works a little bit different than if you where using Photoshop Elements to do this task! In Photoshop we will use the Navigator Panel to help us have multiple views of an image to edit.

Also, in this example we are going to show how to use this the Navigator feature and we will be using a digital scrapbooking project instead of photo, but this feature works the same if you use a photo or a digital supply or a digital scrapbooking page!

Multiple views of image in Photoshop for Photo Editing or Scrapbooking using Photoshop!

When you are editing digital scrapbooking pages or supplies in Photoshop some precision digital scrapbooking tasks may require you to work on your digital scrapbooking page while zooming in quite a bit. Using the zoom feature in Photoshop is the only way to see the image in enough detail to work effectively.

However, while zooming in is needed to see the area you are scrapping, you might also need to see how the area you are working on fits into the overall image or digital scrapbooking page. To do that you might find yourself zooming in to the scrap page, making part of the corrections and then zooming out to see how that looks. This can be a difficult task, but if you know one of the secrets inside of Photoshop then you can actually have two separate windows, both showing the same image. Not just a copy of the image, but the actual image or digital scrap page.

Here is how to do it in Photoshop CS5….

To open dual windows of the same image, do this in Photoshop: go to the top menu and select Window > Navigator from the drop down menu.

This opens the Navigator panel

Now you can move the slider bar on the Navigator to zoom into the area you want to work on.

Then use your mouse to click onto the red box and move it exactly where you want it to focus in on. When you do this is makes the mouse curser look like little hand that is holding the red box while you move it into place.

Now your image or digital scrap project will show be zoomed in to the correct location so you can work on your photo or scrap page. In this example we want to get a good look at the text we are writing and make some corrections.

We will zoom in so we can see how to add to the text and make the correct alignment of the text in the digital scrapbooking tag. See the image below:

This is a very helpful Photoshop tip. So you can zoom into your project and make adjustments while also being able to see the overall image and how the change impacts the whole. Remember, this tip is so helpful to use in when editing photos and even when you are scrapping too.

If you need the Navigator to be larger to have a better view of the the overall image, then just go to the corner and drag the Navigator Panel to the size you would like – see the image below.

If you need the Navigator out of the way then just click on the double triangles – see below. This will collapse the panel and give you more working space.

Now if you need to open the Navigator Panel just click on the icon.

Now the Navigator Panel will open up to use again when you want to zoom into your project or photo and still have a whole view image too!

Once you try this Photoshop tip you will probably fall in love with the Navigator, and use it most the time you are doing close up work with photo editing or scrapping!

Have a nice day and try this Photoshop tip today!

Enjoy!

Using the zoom feature in Elements is the only way to see the image in enough detail to work effectively.

However, while zooming in is needed to see the area you are editing, you might also need to see how the correction fits into the overall image. To do that you might find yourself zooming in to the image, making part of the corrections and then zooming out to see how that looks.
Here is how to do it….

To open dual windows of the same image, do this: select View > New Window for DOCUMENT from the menu, the DOCUMENT or IMAGE is the name of the file you’re working on. For example our image is named “Girl_Hair.jpg” so the New Window will include that name on the menu too! See the image below.

This will open another window of your image up in the work space. Notice that the new view of your image will be named the same and will be highlighted (See #1) and the other one the name will be faded (See #2)

Now that you have both windows are open at the same time, try zooming in on one image. You’ll notice that the other stays at the same magnification while you are zooming in on the other.

When you make edits in one image, then they will appear in both windows. Now you will have a close up view and a whole image view.

In the image above we took some of the extra fly away hairs off this girls neck with the spot healing tool. It was really helpful to have both the close up view to work with and also see how the whole image would be affected as well while making the edits.

Now save your image and close them.

This tip is so helpful to use in when editing photos and even when you are scrapping too.

Once you try this tip you will probably fall in love with it and use it most the time you are doing close up work with photo editing or scrapping!

But even though we use the save button each time we work on our digital projects the SAVE Dialog Box has lots of items we might wonder what they are for.

In this article let’s take a look at the options and formats for saving files in Photoshop Elements.

Saving in Photoshop Elements:

The Save As dialog box is what you will see this when you save a file for the first time and when you choose File>Save As.

Note: the Mac Save As dialog looks a little bit different, but the options are the same.

Here, you’ll name the file, choose its location, select a file format and choose a few other options. Let’s go through the important parts of the save dialog in this article.

1. File Name Field: This is where you enter the name for the file.
(Titled ‘Save As:’ on the Mac.)

2. Format: Here you can select one of 15 file types for saving your file.

3. Include in the Elements Organizer: This option will add the saved file to your catalog so that it will display in the Organizer.

4. Layers: This will preserve all layers in the image. This option will be grayed out if the file does not contain layers other than the
Background layer. It will also be unavailable if you’re saving in a format that doesn’t support layers, such as JPEG. In that case, a small, yellow warning triangle will appear, letting you know that all the layers in the image will be merged into one layer.

5. Embed Color Profile: Checking this box includes the image’s
color profile—sRGB and Adobe RGB are the most common—helping preserve
color when you share files with others.

6. Use Lower Case Extension: some computer applications need images saved in lower case extensions, so keeping this checked covers that possibility.

7. Save in Version Set with Original: This saves the file as part of a Version Set in the Organizer, which keeps the different versions of an image “stacked” together. This is unavailable unless the “Include in the Elements Organizer” option is selected.

8. Save as a Copy: This option will save a copy of the file and keep
the current file open. The copy is saved to the location of the open file.

9. Save Location: The large area in the middle lets you to browse through your folders and choose the location where you would like to save your image.

10. Save: After you have made your selections, then click on the Save button and save your image with the options you have selected.

Now that you know more about the options for saving your image in Photoshop Elements, you can start saving all your Digital Scrapbooking or Photo projects with these options.

Dear Readers: You have been asking lots of questions about layers and I have been answering many of your questions, however, here are a few more questions about layers that might be helpful to you as you are doing digital scrapbooking or photo editing projects!

So here is more information about layers!

Question: How do you add layers in the layers panel?

Answer: Newly added layers appear above the selected layer in the Layers panel. See the image below:

You can add layers to an image by using any of the following methods:
•Create new, blank layers or turn selections into layers.
•Convert a background into a regular layer or vice versa.
•Paste selections into the image.
•Use the Type tool or a shape tool.
•Duplicate an existing layer.

Dear Readers did you know….?
You can create up to 8000 layers in an image, each with its own blending mode and opacity. However, memory constraints may lower this limit.

Tricks for Layer Visibility

Dear Readers, here is another Layer tip, that works in Photoshop or Elements!

Many of us know about hiding a layer by clicking on the eyeball icon or also know as the Layer Visibility icon, see image below:

However, many scrapbookers and photo editors don’t know these other layer tricks.

See if you do?

Layer trick 1: Make all the layers disappear but one. Sometimes you want to work on just one layer and have the others hiding. You could hide all the extra layers by clicking on them one at a time or you can do this trick!

Do this: Push the Alt Key then click on eyeball icon or Layer Visibility icon (MAC: Option Key then click on Layer Visibility icon )

Before using the shortcut:

After using the shortcut:

To get everything back in view, click Alt Key and eye icon on the layer and all the other layers will be visible again. (MAC: Option Key then click on eye icon)

Layer trick 2: Use the Layer Visibility icon (eyeball) to hide all the layers except for that one layer, then cycle through your layers one by one. Now use the same shortcuts as in trick 1 but add one more feature! Hold down Alt Key (Win) / Option Key (Mac) and click on the Layer Visibility icon (eyeball) to hide all the layers except for that one layer, then you can then cycle through your layers by continuing to hold down your Alt key (Win) / Option key (Mac) key and pressing the left or right bracket keys.

The right bracket key will cycle up through the layers, while the left bracket key will cycle down.

As you come to each new layer, Photoshop will make that layer visible and leave all the others hidden. This is a great way to scroll through your digital scrapbooking or photo project and see exactly what’s on each layer.

Layer trick 3: Click and Drag for layer Visibility. Sometimes in digital scrapbooking you might need to hide a string of layers. If so use this trick, click and drag up or down on several layers to toggle the view off or on.

So in the example below, to turn on the visibility of several layers that are turn off. I click on the eyeball icon (or layer visibility icon) and then holding my mouse down I drag along all the layers I want to view again.

Here is what happens when you use this technique:

By dragging down this turns on the layers previously hidden!

Remember that all these same layer tricks and tips work the same way in Photoshop Elements

These are extra great techniques for layers when using Photoshop and Photoshop Elements in digital scrapbooking or photo projects.

Hope this helps you with your Layers!
Till the next blog … love and hugs,
