Make some effort to use your good digital camera this Fall. Now that everyone has a camera in their cell phone to many people are relying solely on cell phones for getting their photos. Cell phone cameras can come in handy on occasion when you don’t have your good camera, but cell phone cameras are not going to get you the best photos. Usually the lens are minimal and they don’t produce the photos that are amazing! I like to think of a cell phone shot, as a camera to use when the option is you will not have the photo otherwise.

So our biggest Photography tip today is DON’T use your Cell Phone Camera for your nature photographs, family photos or other serious photos where you want the quality to be higher.

Now you have gotten your good digital camera out and want to improve those photos too! So, here are a few tips to guide you to better Autumn photography!

Now that Fall is here grab your digital camera and get out there and start taking photos!

Here are 6 photo tips to help you get the best photos this Fall

Tip 1: Take Fall Landscape or Outside Shots in Early morning or Late Afternoon. Outdoor or landscape photography work well from the early morning or late afternoon natural light. One Travel Photographer Susan McCartney says, “It’s best to photograph outdoors when your shadow is longer than you are.”

In the early morning, you might get some fog or mist that will provide a soft background with some long shadows. Morning can provide a great time to go out and take some wonderful Fall photos.

In the later afternoon or early evening the golden light just before sunset transforms not only leaves hanging on trees, but also the leaves that have fallen on the ground.

Tip 2: When taking photos in the middle of the day use backlighting to enhance the photos. When the sun is overhead, you can use backlighting to make leaves glow in your photographs.

For example, see in the example how the light showing through the leaves makes the colors bright and interesting.

Tip 3: Use a close up lens to get really close to the leaves. Go ahead, zoom in with your lens and then put the close up lens on to get even closer! This will give a better image if you want to turn it into a digital scrapbooking embellishment.

Tip 4: Vary the kind of day you take photos, take photos with different types of skies. Don’t always take photos on blue sky days, or don’t always take photos on cloudy days – vary the kind of days you take photos on for different effects. You can take a photo of the same leaf or tree with a different type of sky and have a totally different kind of photo!

Each type of lighting offers different opportunities. If it is a sunny day, you get the benefit of blue sky and strong light and shadow. However, when the sky is overcast or when clouds obscure the sun, you get the benefit of enhancing the colors of the leaves relative to the rest of the surroundings. Stormy skies can make subtle colors “pop.”

Tip 5: Start taking the photos as soon as the leaves in your area start to turn colors. When you see the leaves turn, start taking photos and then keep taking photos as long as you can. Then when the heavy frost comes along, or a big windy rainstorm, color can decrease in intensity, and the wind will rip the leaves from the branches. Don’t miss getting your precious photos by waiting to long before you start taking your Fall photos.

Tip 6: Don’t forget to take candid photos of people with Fall scenery. Fall can give you the opportunity for some great candid photos. Children playing leaves, and couples strolling down a lane with Autumn Trees in the background.

Use a telephoto zoom lens to shoot unobserved candid pictures from farther away. It is very nice to get up close and personal when taking good photos.

However, if you have a camera with a fixed lens then you would have to be so close to the people you are photographing that the shot might be influenced by you because you are now part of the action. Being further away lets the scene develop without people feeling self-conscious and often you can capture more intriguing intimate photos.

Today’s tip will cover how to fill a Selection Fast in Photoshop Elements and Photoshop! In both programs they work almost the same, but we will list the differences below.

Dear Blog Readers: You have been asking lots of questions this and that, but one of the biggest questions I get is to give you the best or hottest tips for using Photoshop or Elements in digital scrapbooking or photo editing projects!

So here over the next few weeks I will try to give you 50 of my super secret or best tips for using Photoshop Elements or Photoshop in Digital Scrapbooking or Photo Editing. So by the time you are done with this special blog series you will have many helpful tips to use when you are working in Photoshop Elements!

This time we will start with Tip 11: How to Fill a Selection Fast in Photoshop Elements and Photoshop

First, let’s say that you are digitally scrapping, and then you wish you could put some color into an embellishment.

For example, look at the image to the right, see the white embellishment?

Let’s select it an color it quickly!

So we use the marquee tool, to select the white tag embellishment (but we can use any selection tool to make the selection)

Next, select a color in the foreground color chip area, to fill the selection with. See the example below:

Then use these shortcut keys to fill the selection quickly! To fill with the current foreground color, for example, press Alt + Backspace Key (Mac: Option + Delete Key).

Now the white tag embellishment, matches the colors in my digital scrapbooking project! To make my embellishment unselected use these shortcut keys: Ctrl + D for deselect (Mac: Cmd + D)

I can keep going to make this embellishment special, by selecting another area (but not the whole area) of the tag embellishment, selecting another color and using the Fill Selection shortcut keys: Alt + Backspace Key (Mac: Option + Delete Key).

So this example on the right we have made another selection, only just a small selection not the whole tag, like before, and when we pick another color like yellow and then use the shortcut trick, it can add a fun design to our tag in the colors of the scrap project! We can change the selection tool and use the Fill Selection shortcut keys: Alt + Backspace Key (Mac: Option + Delete Key) to add some extra shapes and designs too!

One more trick!

If you happen to have a color you want to use in the background color chip tool area, then you can use that color instead of the foreground color by using this other shortcut keys trick instead!

So now I want to Fill the Selection with the rust color instead of the yellow color.

Now use these shortcut keys to fill with the current background color, press Ctrl-Backspace (Mac: Command-Delete). Now you can get this!

Here is another trick! Make another selection, then to open the Fill Layer dialog and choose additional options, press Shift-Backspace (Mac: Shift-Delete).

Make your selections. In this example I want the selection to fill with a different color than the one in the foreground or background chips, so I select the color controls and make my selections

I picked another color in my digital scrapbooking project!

Now my selection is filled with the brown color. Wow, I have come a long way from having just a white tag embellishment! All by just using these handy shortcut keys!

Now I can just finish off my project by adding some text to my tag embellishment!

And Photoshop Users, all of these shortcuts work in Photoshop too!

Fill a Selection Fast in Photoshop use these shortcut keys: To fill with the current foreground color, for example, press Alt-Backspace (Mac: Option-Delete). To fill with the current background color, press Ctrl-Backspace (Mac: Command-Delete). And to open the Fill Layer dialog and choose additional options, press Shift-Backspace (Mac: Shift-Delete).

Now you have really make some nice changes with these shortcut keys:

Here is the example with the changes made with these shortcut keys, and the original embellishment with no changes and only the text!

You can see how these shortcut key tips can really be used to enhance your digital scrapbooking projects! Note: these tricks and shortcut key tips can also be used in photo editing task as well!

This time we will start with Tip 9: how to repeat a filter effect in Photoshop Elements and Photoshop

First, let’s talk about using a filter in Digital Scrapbooking before we tell the secret tips!

So, lets say that you are designing a great digital scrapbooking page, and you put an embellishment on your digital scrapbooking page.

You take the time to go through all the settings and apply a filter to one of your embellishments and now your scrap page is almost perfect! (#1)

But to finish the scrap page you want to add one more embellishment (#2) and you want it to have the same filter setting that you applied to the first embellishment.

You could try to go through and go to the menu and then make all the adjustments again, hoping you remembered the exact setting you used the first time!

Or you could just use a handy shortcut key that would apply the same filter with all the same setting to your second image!

You be the judge to which one you would use?…. We think you will like the shortcut key, and it is pretty simple use, and also a huge time saver!

Let’s say that you’ve applied a filter to your image, and you like it so much that you want to reapply it to the same image, or perhaps another image that you have open (#1). (This shortcut method works on digital scrapbooking supplies or photos!)

To use the shortcut keys all you have to do is press Ctrl + F (Mac: Command + F) to reapply the filter with the same exact settings you used before. (#2)

Special note: keep in mind that it always reapplies the last filter you used so if you used another one in between images it’s going to apply that one instead!

When you see how easy this is It will surely become one of your favorite shortcut keys!

Try this fun trick and see how it works on some of your digital scrapbooking or photo editing projects too!

Ps. This shortcut key works the same in Photoshop too! Below we are applying the same filter on different photos in Photoshop! Can do the same thing in Elements too!

As you can see you can also reapply filters to photos as well as digital scrapbooking supplies using the same shortcut key too!

Today’s tip will cover how to quickly Scroll Through Gradients in Photoshop Elements and Photoshop! In both programs they work almost the same, but we will list the differences below.

Dear Blog Readers: You have been asking lots of questions this and that, but one of the biggest questions I get is to give you the best or hottest tips for using Photoshop or Elements in digital scrapbooking or photo editing projects!

So here over the next few weeks I will try to give you 50 of my super secret or best tips for using Photoshop Elements or Photoshop in Digital Scrapbooking or Photo Editing. So by the time you are done with this special blog series you will have many helpful tips to use when you are working in Photoshop Elements!

This time we will start with Tip 8: Helpful Brush Tool Tips in Photoshop Elements and Photoshop

First, let’s talk about brush-based tools before we tell the secret tips.

Several of the tools in Photoshop or Elements use brush like tool, like the brush, pencil, eraser and more.  The tips we going tell you work with more than just the official BRUSH TOOL, these tools we will call the brush-based tools.

For example, what if you where digitally scrapbooking and you decided want to save some time when using a brush-based tool, then try  these 3 handy shortcuts!

3 Helpful Brush Base-Tool Tricks

Shortcut1: Change Paint Colors. Usually to get the eye dropper to change a color would be a multiple step process,  go to the color picker, then the color picker menu pops up, then get eye dropper and select color – wow I am tired just thinking about this!!! How about streamlining this and changing the color quicker? Here is how…

Want to quickly pick up a new color when working with any of the painting or drawing tools? Simply hold down the Alt key (Mac: Option key) and the eyedropper icon will appear as your cursor. Now just click on an area that contains the color you want to use and release the Alt/Option key. This will set the selected color as your foreground color.

Remember Photoshop works the same way!

Shortcut 2: Switch Brushes.
Usually to switch brushes, you would select the brush tool then go to the option bar, get the drop down menu and select the set of brushes you would like to use. Next, we scroll down to this brush set and select the set of brushes.

In this case we have a custom brush set loaded in the brush picker menu.

Take a look at the these brushes in this set – see the image to the right ~  ( Back-to-School Brushes for Digital Scrapbooking ).

This set of brushes are images that you use to “stamp” on your digital scrapbooking project. Some brushes you paint with but these brushes you use as a “stamp” or using the eraser tool these brushes can act as punch to cut a shape out.

Next you would usually select the brush you wanted to use, if you change your mind just repeat the process and select another brush!See an example in the image below.

Now you can use the brush – wow, that was a lot of work!
Not really, but we can make it simpler –keep reading!

Here is the tip: To switch brushes without jumping to the top of the option bar, just right-click anywhere in the document. The Brush Picker menu will appear right where you right-clicked and you can pick a new brush without leaving the area you are working on!

Here we pick another brush and then use it on your digital scrapbooking project.

Other tools that are brush based can use this trick like the Easer Tool. In this example the Easer Tool when we select a brush and “Stamp on it” it cuts through the layer we are on, in this example you can see the items below the area that is cut out when we use this trick!

Special Note: However, the only brush-based tool this doesn’t work with is the Color Replacement tool.

Again, Photoshop works the same way on this brush tip!

Shortcut 3: Set Brush Size and Hardness.

If you have taken the Getting Started Series in Digital Scrapbooking for Elements or Photoshop then you probably know you can increase or decrease the size of your brush by using these shortcut keys.

Just pressing the right bracket ( ] ) key increases the size of the brush and left bracket ( [ ) key decreases the size of the brush.

This is a nice tip to know and use in either Elements or Photoshop!

But did you know you can also change the hardness of your current brush (we are using a round brush to illustrate this),  we can change the hardness or softness of the brush without changing the brushes size too!

In the example above (1) is the original brush we picked a hard brush to show how this works. Next, we pressed the Shift and [ key (left bracket) on the computer keyboard to decrease the hardness of
the brush. Click the bracket key several times to make it even softer. You can see in example (2) the brush becomes softer.

Then just press Shift plus the ] (right bracket) to increase the hardness of the current brush without increasing the size – see (3) we clicked the bracket key several times and made it go back to the the original hardness!

These tips will help you really get around using tools that use the brush. Then you can streamline your digital scrapbooking projects!

This time we will start with Tip 7: Scroll Through Gradients in Photoshop Elements and Photoshop

First, let’s talk about the default settings then talk about how to change that. For example, what if you where digitally scrapbooking and you decided to use a gradient to change your digital scrapbooking paper you would click on the Gradient tool (G).

Then you would go to the top Option Bar and to the Gradient Picker and select a gradient from the drop down menu.

Now when you are new to gradients you might want to look at all your choices and select one. Like the Transparent Rainbow Gradient.

This works the same way in Photoshop too!

However, once you have used a few gradients it is nice to quickly get to the gradient you would like to using quicker shortcut keys.

So here is how to Scroll Through Gradients with Key Board Shortcuts:  

Here how you do it in Photoshop Elements and Photoshop ……

After clicking on the Gradient tool (Shortcut Key G), you can scroll through the gradients in the Gradient picker without opening it and selecting one.

Just press > Key (greater than symbol) on your computer keyboard to go to the next gradient.

Keep clicking on the > Key to advance through the gradients

Go from this to this

Now you can also go back to earlier gradients by clicking on the  < Key(less than symbol) to switch to the previous gradient.

This is how you can move back and forth through the gradients and more quickly so you can spend more time scrapping and less time with Elements or Photoshop.

So in our digital scrapbooking project we used the shortcut keys to select Transparent Rainbow Gradient, then set the Opacity to 40% and selected the area to apply the gradient.

Now my digital scrapbooking paper has a different look and I used a shortcut key to select the gradient I would use. This saves time and helps me scrap faster. Now I can finish scrapping my digital project.

Now remember even though we have illustrated this with Photoshop Elements, Photoshop works the same way!

Special Note: now here is an extra tip ~ If you want to go beginning of the gradient list then Press Shift-< to move to the first gradient in the Gradient picker or Shift-> to go to the last gradient.

This time we will start with TIP 6: Get Rid of Your Stroke (Border) with Rounded Corners in Photoshop Elements and Photoshop

Remember when photos were developed and printed with a white bordered trim around the edges?

Whether or not you do, we now have the luxury of going back in time and recreating those cool, old fashion-looking photographs!

It is easy to add a border around your photos in either Photoshop or Elements. However, the border (or stroke) often has rounded corners instead of the nice square corners.

First, let’s talk about the default settings then talk about how to change that. For example, what if you where digitally scrapbooking and you loaded a photo into Photoshop Elements and added a border around the photo to give it that retro look. So you have probably done this by using a Stroke layer style (Layer>LayerStyle>Style Settings).

NEXT, you select the options for the border (Stroke) you want around the photo.

However, doing this results in a border (Stroke) that has a rounded edge. The outline or border becomes rounded as you enlarge it—not usually what we wanted when we add a stroke to the photo in the digital scrapbooking project.

So how about getting rid of the border or (Stroke) Rounded Corners?

Here’s how you do that in Photoshop Elements and Photoshop….

Instead of using a layer style, arrange the Digital Photo on your digital scrapbooking paper. Then, click on the thumbnail of the layer you want to put the border (stroke) around.

Photoshop Elements Users: Go to: Edit > Stroke (Outline) Selection

Photoshop Users: Go to: Edit > Stroke

When the dialog opens, change your Stroke Width to something
larger, and then set the Location to Inside.

Click OK when you’re done and your results will look a lot cleaner!

That’s the trick to keeping the corners of the stroke (border) sharp and square instead of rounded!

This tip works in both Photoshop Elements and Photoshop too!

I am not quite sure how I imagined that I would begin Digital Scrapbooking, but I didn’t realize right-off-the-bat that I would need any Software!

She went on to explain that this type of Software would allow me to combine both Digital Photos and Digital Supplies together (like Digital Papers, Frames, Embellishments, etc.) to make Digital Scrapbooking Pages! Photo Editing Software would also help me enhance my Digital Photos, edit my Digital Pages, and create beautiful Digital Scrapbooking Projects!

So now that I knew I needed to get some Software in order to start Digital Scrapbooking, I wasn’t quite sure which Software to choose or which Program was best! My mom explained to me that there are basically two, quality Digital Scrapbooking/Photo Editing Software Programs to choose from: either Adobe® Photoshop® OR Adobe® Photoshop® Elements. So, that narrowed it down a bit. I could choose between Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Photoshop Elements, but which one was better? She continued by telling me the difference between the two Adobe Programs and why I might want one over the other.

To all of you out there who feel utterly lost in the world of Digital Scrapbooking and graphic program options, let me try to help explain the two programs quickly:

Photoshop

Adobe® Photoshop® CS5 was designed with Graphic Designers in mind and to be used to create Professional Magazine Ads, etc. So it has lots of great tools for advanced digital editing and even advanced digital scrapbooking.

• For example Photoshop CS5 has these features that Elements doesn’t have: like puppet warp, HDR Pro, 64-bit support (for performance), Pen Tool, History Brush, Curves, automatic lens correction, Truer Edge detection technology, 3D objects & text, advanced text formatting, CMYK color models, and so on.
• As far as tools, brushes, filters, Photoshop CS5 added some new ones (e.g., Mixer Brush, Bristle Tips, Repoussé) and Photoshop Elements in general has a reduced set with limited options available, which are more pre-fixed and oriented for the goals of home photo retouching, rather than a full-blown “do it all” professional image editor and creator like Photoshop CS5.

Because it was designed for the professionals it’s not as user friendly for the beginner, however with our Digital Scrapbook training for Photoshop you should be up and running right away! Photoshop is a must if you get into advanced digital scrapbooking like making your own digital supplies. Photoshop’s main down point is that it is very expensive; around $600 – $700! And if you buy the Extended Version with more features the price is in the $1000.00 range! So many people, because of the price, choose to start off with Photoshop Elements.

Special Note: if you’re a student then the discount on Photoshop CS5 is huge, and the price difference between the two products is not as large. Students get only a $10 price break on Elements (after rebate), vs. getting 80% off for the full Photoshop.

Photoshop Elements

Adobe® Photoshop® Elements 9 was created for people getting started in Photoshop, Photo Editing and Digital Scrapbooking. Photoshop Elements honestly can do many of the same things that Photoshop can do at a fraction of the price! (Around $50 – $80)! This is a big secret that most people don’t know! Not to mention, Photoshop Elements is much, much less complicated and more user friendly! Also, Photoshop Elements has extra tools and digital supplies just for the digital scrapbooker, which regular Photoshop doesn’t have!

• Photoshop Element has some digital scrapbooking supplies built right into the program – Photoshop doesn’t! Also the cookie cutter tool is fantastic to use in digital scrapbooking as it cuts out scrapbooking mats, photos, backgrounds into shapes! Traditional scrapbookers use a tool like this all the time, and Elements has it too, but not Photoshop.
• Also, if you want to have a software program for editing video too then you can buy the Elements combo software for about $130 and have the BOTH Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements too! Premiere Elements edits video, works hand in hand with Photoshop Elements and is the little sister version of Premiere – Adobe’s top of the line video editing software! Getting both programs is still cheaper than buying just Photoshop alone!

With Photoshop Elements 9 the orientation towards the new Photo Editor or Digital Scrapbooker instead of the professional graphic artist, Elements is a natural pick for many digital Scrapbookers! It is easy to get started and learn Photoshop Elements and Digital Scrapbooking with our Getting Started Series in Digital Scrapbooking using Photoshop Elements Training! With a little training you will be creating wonderful digital scrapbooking pages and projects in no time! And if you ever want to upgrade to Photoshop, all your digital scrapbooking pages can be read by Photoshop, even if you created them in Elements! Also, if you learn Elements, much of your training can easily shift to Photoshop as many of the same principals apply to both programs!

Which Software Program should you pick?

So bottom line, it really depends on your needs and goals. Photoshop Elements remains a scaled down and hobbyist-oriented version of “the gold standard.” Your best bet is probably to download and run the free trials of both to see what works better for your requirements, as no single answer is right for everybody.

Oh… so which one would I pick? A few of us like like me, love having both Photoshop and Elements! Elements is very easy to use and I start out in it especially if I am digital scrapbooking or making a few photo edits. But later as I need more control or special features, especially when I am making digital scrapbooking supplies from scratch I then switch over to Photoshop! Photoshop has some great features that I love and can’t get in Elements. So really for me I use both programs every day! They use the same file format so whether I make it in Elements or Photoshop I can use it in either program or switch between the programs to create the prefect project. They often work the same so once I have learned one I usually can work in the other program to with the same project. Don’t tell anyone but I usually have both programs opened on my computer at the same time too! Ok, I realize this is probably over the top and that for most people picking one or the other would do just fine! But for me I love both programs for different reasons, and use each one every day!

Again, try both programs and see which is best for you.

Today’s tip will cover how to quickly rotate images in Photoshop Elements! In this tip we will only be talking about Photoshop Elements because Photoshop doesn’t work the same.

Dear Blog Readers: You have been asking lots of questions this and that, but one of the biggest questions I get is to give you the best or hottest tips for using Photoshop or Elements in digital scrapbooking or photo editing projects!

So here over the next few weeks I will try to give you 50 of my super secret or best tips for using Photoshop Elements or Photoshop in Digital Scrapbooking or Photo Editing. So by the time you are done with this special blog series you will have many helpful tips to use when you are working in Photoshop Elements!

This time we will start with TIP 5: How to quickly rotate images in Photoshop Elements!

First, let’s talk about the default settings then talk about how to change that. For example, what if you where digitally scrapbooking and you loaded the digital paper into Elements. NEXT, you decided that you wanted to turn your digital scrapbooking paper and also one of your photos.

Here’s how you do that in Photoshop Elements 9….

The usual way to rotate the scrap paper and photo is to go up to the menu Image > Rotate> 90 degree Left or Right

This is an acceptable way to rotate as you scrap or photo edit in either Photoshop Elements or Photoshop. However, there is a trick to do this task a little faster in both of these programs.

So here is how to do this in Photoshop Elements …..

In Photoshop Elements to Quickly Rotate Images 90 degrees without going into any menus.

Start by going to the Straighten tool (P). This tool is normally used for straightening images that may be slightly tilted. But here is another way to use it, to quickly rotate the scrapbooking project or image.
FYI: Photoshop doesn’t have the straighten tool so that is why we are only focusing on Elements on this tip!

So, if you hold down the Shift key and click-and-drag from bottom to top and it will rotate 90 degrees counterclockwise

It rotates like this…

It might be helpful to know that if you are digital scrapbooking it will rotate all layers and not just the one you have selected.

If you decide that you don’t want to rotate – just undo it! Click on the undo button in Elements or use the shortcut key.

If you want it to rotate 90 degrees clockwise then  hold down the Shift
key and click-and-drag from top to bottom, the image will rotate 90
degrees clockwise.

It rotates like this…

Now my digital scrapbooking project is rotated in the direction I wanted and I can continue to digitally scrap my page!

This trick also works for photos! Just use the Straighten tool (P).

Now I will scrap both of these into a great digital scrapbooking project!

First, let’s talk about the default settings then talk about how to change that. If you have been working with an image and applying a filter to it, then you might be tempted to keep adjusting it, perhaps you have applied multiple filters to it!

For example, in the image above you can see how applying several filters isn’t what I wanted. However, instead of using the cancel button and starting over, I can reset it!

So here is how …..

Now, here how you do it in Photoshop Elements ……

To do this in Photoshop Elements:

In Photoshop Elements most dialogs that have a Cancel button, but you can change Cancel to Reset by holding down the Alt (Mac: Option) key.

Click on the Reset button to put all the settings back to their original values!

FYI: Photoshop Users it works the same way!

So if you’ve played around with a filter’s settings and think you’ve
gone too far — Don’t Cancel; Reset!

Now just add your great image to your scrapbooking project!

Try this tip next time you are working in one of your digital scrapbooking projects or editing photo with a filter!
