Thanksgiving is around the corner and before we know it we will be rushing around the grocery store, baking up a storm and visiting with family and friends.

Sounds like fun, however for many family members, neighbors, and acquaintances the holidays are anything but fun.

Some of these wonderful people don’t have family close by to share a meal with, some may have lost a loved one during this time of year and it brings back those memories, and some may have financial struggles that keep them from celebrating in a manner that brings them peace and joy.

How can we make the holidays pleasant for those around us that may struggle through them for one reason or another.

We can start looking around right now to see whose life we can try to brighten up and whose load we can lighten before the holiday is here.

Some suggestions I would like to make are simple but meaningful.

Giving service to a person in need is a wonderful way to lighten a burden. Rake leaves, sit and visit, invite them for a family activity or meal.

Maybe help someone by offering to babysit while them go to the grocery store. Do a Craft with your children and then take a neighbor a simple gift such as a homemade placemat made from autumn leaves and contact paper.

Read someone a story or how about helping a child with their homework? There are so many things we can do to be of service to people of all ages that are around us.

So as I think about how busy my life is and how insanely busy the holidays become, I have a goal to slow down just enough to serve somebody else.

More ideas might be as simple as making cookies for a friend, and take some time to talk to them, listening to what they have to say —which is sometimes the greatest gift!

Ask about their family and sit and look through old photo albums with them, offer to scan some of those photos for them.

You might put some of the scanned photos on a digital frame for them so they can enjoy their photos!

Also it is big help to help someone organize their digital photos, maybe even offering to scrap some of digital photos for them, and show them how to get them printed out into albums!

(Note: see the training for fixing scanned photos, training for organizing digital photos and see a mobile scanner that is handy to take to out – see these at bottom of this blog!)

Maybe in the process of doing service we will make a new friend, for sure making a happy memory, and will spread some sunshine around.

Get your children involved, get your whole family part of the service, and when it is possible gather your friends to help out too!

Remember that no matter what your holiday looks like, it will always be happier if you can bring a smile to someone else’s face.

Also remember to take a camera to capture their smile, and yours of course!

This was a struggle for me as I had no idea at times what information was important and what was not.

I would come across papers that I knew were important such as marriage licenses, birth certificates, and other official documents which I knew were important to keep.

The majority of things I found were just old papers, documents, records and greeting cards which I knew I could throw away.

However, there were so many documents, personal greetings, and mementos that just sort of sat in the middle of the for sure I want to keep these and for sure I want to get rid of these piles.

Because this was such a dilemma as I tried to dispose of my parents belongings, I decided that today is the day in which I will decide what to keep and what to get rid of when it comes to my own belongings.

Then again I have this pile of my own which I know is just a pile of nice mementos that represent nice memories and yet I really don’t have room for them.

That is when I came up with the idea of taking pictures of unusually shaped mementos, or scanning of images, documents, or the things I really want to remember and yet don’t have room to keep.

Making things digital doesn’t really take up any room at all!

And if I organize my digital images then things will be really easy to take care of!

This will solve a problem of clutter for me now, and my kids will never have to deal with the same predicament that I had to face with my parents.

Some things I chose to keep are: All legal documents, wedding certificates, religious oriented certificates, graduation certificates, documents still pending such as the mortgage on the house etc..

I chose to get rid of all bills that have been paid, invitations, most greeting cards and announcements of graduation, parties, etc..

I chose to scan: Announcements, invitations, greeting cards that really mean something to me. Children’s art work and gifts to me as their mother. (I actually kept some of these to give to the children when they are out of the house.)

Personal letters and documentation from family and friends that I don’t want to forget. I also scanned and loaded these image to my computer and onto a CD disc of genealogical records and personal accounts of ancestors that I had stored in boxes.

Again I kept a few of these items such as personal letters from my grandparents.

This process has really helped me see what “things” are important and I hope that it will help you if you are trying to unclutter your space as I am.

Several things will help with this task and I want to share with you! A scanner that can scan images in albums, quilts, coins, and framed documents and MORE! I would have loved taking a mobile scanner over to my parents, one that didn’t need to be hooked up to a computer, and one that you can take places and scan on the go like the Flip-Pal Mobile Scanner.
If so then you might be thinking that you might want to scan those photos so you can use them in your digital scrapbooking projects, keep a backup or just have them turned into digital to preserve them.

Scanning photos is a great way to turn printed photos into digital images.

Many of us digital scrapbookers very interested in scanning old photos and turn them into digital versions so we can make digital scrapbooking pages with our photos.

So to help you get better scans use these tips:

Tip: Gently remove the photo from the album, and clean it off. Take you photo out of the album and remove the lint, dust, and smudges with a soft brush or lint-free wipe or clothe for photos.

Have you ever handled a photo and got fingerprints on it? This can be copied in the scanning process, so wearing white cotton gloves when handling photos will help keep skin oils from your photos and keep from having scanners fingerprints on the digital images.

Note: (gloves available at hardware or photography stores)

Tip: Remove smudges, lint or dust from the scanner glass and lid before you scan. The photo itself isn’t the only place that needs to be cleaned before scanning.

The scanner also needs a quick check and clean-up to make sure your scanning does get additional dusts, lint or smudges on images that are scanned that come from the scanner.

Use any cleaner safe for a camera lens by spraying it into a cloth and then wiping the surfaces clean.

Tip: Select the correct resolution for a clear digital image.

Scanner resolution is measured in dots per inch (DPI). More dots mean a sharper image. The resolution for a scanned photo for printing should be set between 200-300 dpi. The resolution for a photo that you want to use on the Web, or to email or for computer viewing (other examples: uploading to MySpace or Facebook) should be set between 72 -100 dpi. If you only have time for one scan then scan for print quality as you can always change the resolution to lower quality in PSE — but not the other way — in other words, low quality to high quality doesn’t work!!!!

Read this article to get more information on how to set your resolution ~ SCANNING TIP! The Perfect Resolution for Special Photos

Also, scanning the photo you might notice a few problems come up, so here is how you can take care of it.

Tip: The Image is too Dark. The photo looks too dark compared to the original photo. There is no detail in the shadow parts of the image. This might be caused by scanning with the wrong exposure or brightness settings. To fix this try re-scanning the image with the brightness or exposure settings with the slider towards the light end of the scale. If your image still needs some help after that consider making some changes after scanning in Photoshop or Elements. Buy training on how to Removing Shadows and how to Lightening Digital Photos in Photoshop Elements.

Tip: Picture is too Bright, White or Faded. The image is too bright or faded out with white compared to the original photo. Again, this might be caused by scanning with the wrong exposure or brightness settings.

To fix this try re-scanning the image with the brightness or exposure settings with the slider towards the dark end of the scale.

If your image still needs some help after that consider making some changes after scanning in Photoshop or Elements.

Then, after you have scanned your photos – take some time to photo edit them in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, organize them, and make a CD back-up of all the photos you just scanned!

Oh yes, ….don’t forget to scrap all those old photos you just scanned too!

Enjoy!

How do you organize them so you can find them again?

See the following article to learn more about getting both your photos and digital scrapbooking supplies organized!

This New Year’s Get Your Photos and Digital Scrapbooking Supplies Organized! (originally posted 1/8/2010 by Cheri Barlow)

It is the new year – time to get organized!

Are your photos getting lost on your computer? Can you find your digital scrapbooking supplies? Where are your digital scrapbooking projects that you just worked on last month?

Well, maybe one of the goals you have set up for 2011 is to get your digital photos, scrapbooking supplies, and scrap pages organized. It is not that hard if you use Photoshop Elements Organizer!

To get all your images organized doesn’t really take that much time you just need to do it!

In fact, if you are using Photoshop Elements on a PC (or Mac Elements 9) then you already have the software you need to get organized. If you don’t own Elements it is worth buying it for the Organizer alone! And when you think you get both the Organizer, Editing capabilities, and more, all included for around $50-80 this program is a steal! See these specials at Amazon on Elements! Also, if you are a regular Photoshop user then you might not know but you can organize in the Elements Organizer and even open directly from the organizer into Photoshop too if you have that program installed on your computer! Everyone wins using the Organizer!

This Year – Get Organized with Adobe’s Organizer!

When you are using Photoshop Elements, it’s all about using your new Photoshop Elements best friend: The Organizer. As we transfer our digital photos or digital scrapbooking supplies to our computer, they often can somehow seem to disappear into the mysterious corners of our computer. We can’t remember where we put that photo, what we named the folder, etc. That’s where our super-hero, the Organizer, can step in and rescue us! When we bring our photos or digital scrapbooking supplies into the Organizer, it automatically adds them to your very own catalog, organizing them by date.

Depending on how organized you really want to be, you can set up additional catalogs in the Organizer, categorizing your images or supplies by other themes. You can even add keyword tags to help make finding photos or supplies later.

The Organizer in Photoshop Elements is, in many ways, the backbone for setting your photos or digital scrapbooking pages up for some of the other creative projects you can do in Photoshop Elements!

This New Year, get those old photos that are sitting around on your computer in a place where you can find them and back them up for safe keeping.

Make it your New Year’s resolution to clean up all your digital scrapbooking supplies and images by using the Photoshop Elements Organizer! The Organizer is very easy to use if you know how and with some training you can start getting organized right away! Also organize your digital scrapbooking supplies and pages so you can find them quickly so when those discount coupons come in your email you know exactly where your digital scrapbooking pages are!

If you bought a camcorder in the ’80s or ’90s and filmed every birthday, graduation, school events, and random family event in between, you probably have a big box of VHS tapes you haven’t watched in years. Also, you might not even have a video player any more!

Your videotapes, movie film, and slides are fading over time. Instead of letting your memories fade away, have them transferred to DVDs, where they are easier to watch and more fun to share!

So with that on my mind, a few months ago I started to focus on getting my family videos turned into digital media and putting these old home movies on DVDs and giving copies to my children. I was afraid if I didn’t hurry and get the family movies converted to digital that it would be lost forever as video is a dinosaur technology and not only is it hard to find a video player, but the video it’s self was fading and breaking.

If you are like me and want to preserve these family treasures by getting them converted to digital media, here are some ideas that might save you time.

Conversion Resources:

Do it yourself:
like… Sony DVDirect Compact Burner

I am sure there are other transferring machines or software, but I was able to transfer lots of my home family video movies with the Sony DVDirect Compact Burner.

Here is a general description of this product: Transfer home movies and digital pictures to DVD, quickly and easily without a PC. Connect with virtually any camcorder, VCR, even DVR for recording video DVDs playable in standard DVD players. Built in slots accept the 5 most common memory cards for recording digital pictures to DVD as a slideshow or for photo storage. Record high definition AVCHD video from Sony HDD or Memory Stick Handycam camcorders to DVD playable in Blu-ray Disc compatible devices. Sales for around $199

I found this burner made taking my home video and transferring it very easy and straightforward. I was able to make copies for all my children so they could have their baby, toddler and young children home movies – it made a nice gift for them!

Take in to a local store to have them convert them:
like… Costco

If you don’t want to convert your video then you can get some help and have someone else do it.

One place that does it is Costco, so if you have one in your area you can take your videos, movie film and even slides to have them converted and transferred to DVD.

Here is some information about their conversion service:

Your memories will be transferred onto archive-quality gold DVDs.

Pricing starts at $17.99. A 2nd DVD copy is included with every transfer order.

Customize your DVD with a title, menu theme and music background.

Just bring in your tapes, reels and slides to Costco 1-Hour Photo. Pick up your DVDs in about 3 weeks.

Make the converted video available online:
like… Pixorial

Seeing all those old tapes, the contents of which I had mostly forgotten, all in one place on my computer or played in by DVD player on my TV was fabulous. But how would you like to share your video online with your family too?!

For example you can send old home videos to Pixorial, a new online service that will digitize your old VHS, Mini-DV, 8mm, and BetaMax tapes; safely archive the footage on its servers; and allow you to edit and share your videos instantly. Often, within two weeks of mailing video tapes, (with a kit Pixorial provides), you can receive an e-mail saying your videos are online and ready for viewing. You can easily share with family and friends, and you can also connect to many social network sites too!

Many companies offer conversion only to DVD but Pixorial’s service includes digital transfer to online files instead.

This option really brings old family movies into the newest type of media – online and digital!

Here is some information about their services:

With Pixorial, you can do more than ever before possible with video, including:

Archive your entire video library on secure servers

Edit, create and share video content online

Collaborate with others through video, using video

Broadcast easily through social networks

Create unique, personalized video products (e.g. DVDs and video e-books and e-cards)

—-

Hopefully this article gives you lots of choices to pick the right one for saving your precious video memories!

Good luck!

The first day of spring is TODAY! Hopefully the sun is shining wherever you are today, the flowers are starting to bloom, and the birds are beginning to sing again.

Since my move from southern California to Nashville, Tennessee (or what I like to call NashVegas- haha!) I have had to adjust to colder winters and harsher weather. That’s why I am so ready and definitely looking forward to Spring 2010! I’m ready to warm up!

Besides warmer weather, spring also makes me think of spring cleaning. It’s a great time of year to come out of our dark caves, clean up our surroundings, and get organized again!

Do you ever feel the same way about digital scrapbooking? As less-messy as digital scrapbooking is compared to traditional scrapbooking (thank goodness it’s all on your computer and there aren’t real photo, paper, sticker, and ribbon clippings everywhere right?!), as your digital scrapbooking collection grows, things can feel a little crazy and overwhelming! As you collect digital scrapbooking kits, how do you even know what you have anymore? Looking for a blue digital scrapbooking paper but not even sure where to look in your massive folders filled with miscellaneous supplies? Yep- it’s easy to feel totally out of control and unorganized!

Maybe this spring you should also include the goal to do a little spring cleaning when it comes to your digital scrapbooking kits and supplies!

So, how do you get your digi-stuff organized? Well, if you use a PC computer and Photoshop Elements- we have the solution! Use Organizer Training from Digital Scrapbooks and More!

There are three Organizer lessons that are critical to learning how to use the Organizer within Photoshop Elements.

Information about the Organizer within Photoshop Elements - a Good way to get Organized this Year!

If you have set your goals for 2010 and you want one of your goals to be getting all of your digital photos, digital scrapbooking supplies, and digital scrapbooking pages and projects organized then you will want to do it with Adobe’s Photoshop Elements Organizer!

See yesterday’s blog article: (This New Year’s Get Your Photos and Digital Scrapbooking Supplies Organized) which is about setting New Years goals of getting your Photos and Digital Supplies organized!

Also, to learn more about Adobe’s Organizer you may want to read the article that follows below:

Introduction to the Organizer within Photoshop Elements

by Cheri Barlow

(This blog article was originally posted 8/25/2009)

6 Reasons to use The Organizer within Photoshop Elements

It can happen to anyone. You’re just living a normal life, minding your own business, editing photos and digital scrapbooking your pages within Photoshop Elements… when, BAM! You realize that your hundreds of photos, digital scrapbooking supplies, and digital scrapbooking pages are all over the place, everything is super-messy, and your digital world is just seriously out of control! It’s only then that you make the tough-decision: it’s time to clean up your act and get organized!

If you are using Photoshop Elements on a PC computer, then you can begin organizing your photos and digital supplies using your new best “clean-freak” friend: The Organizer- a handy-dandy feature that’s right inside the program!

Here are Six Reasons why you should use the Photoshop Elements Organizer:

Reason 1: The Catalog. When you bring photo files into the Organizer, the program adds them to what’s called a catalog. Each item (photos, images, supplies, etc) are automatically cataloged by date when you use the Organizer.

You can keep all of your photos in one catalog, or you can store them in separate catalogs. For example, one good use for separate catalogs would be to have one catalog dedicated to photos, another one for digital scrapbooking supplies, and yet another catalog for finished digital scrapbooking pages. If you want to group your images even further, you can place them into similar albums, another example: an album that only included photos of your “summer vacation”.

One of the nice things about your catalog is it doesn’t have to be a lot of work and it doesn’t have to be complicated if you don’t want it to be! But of course, if organizing by date isn’t enough organization for you, you can always make your catalogs more detailed or specific, by making more catalogs or specific albums!

Reason 2: Keyword Tags. For specific organization, use keywords with your images. Keyword tags can help you sort your stuff with better precision. For example, adding a keyword tag of the word “bow” to all your digital scrapbooking bow embellishments would help you sort your digital supplies by a specific type. If you ever were digital scrapbooking later and wanted to use some kind of a digital scrapbooking bow embellishment, you could search within the Organizer, and have all your bow supplies at your fingertips! No more hunting in every folder on your computer to find bow supplies! Or even further, you could use keywords “blue bows”! Adding additional keyword tags only makes your searches even more helpful when it comes time to needing certain supplies, pics, or pages!

Reason 3. Virtual Browser. The Organizer acts very much like a virtual browser as it shows you thumbnail pictures each item within the Organizer. The thumbnails you see in the Organizer are merely “pointers” to the original locations of the actual items. In other words, if I searched for “blue bows,” it might bring up 15 different blue bows thumbnail pictures. Each different bow thumbnail would take you to the original location of that bow supply- whether you made the bow embellishment or bought it from a scrap company and saved it to your computer. The thumbnail could even lead you to different drives on your computer, but the Organizer has brought them into one handy place for you to review and select in one, organized place. It’s convenient and a huge timesaver!

Need to find something and didn’t tag it, then Search!

Reason 4. Find Images using the Search Feature. Besides looking for your photos, supplies, or pages within your catalogs, albums, or using keyword tags, the Organizer also includes a full-featured search tool.

As your collection of photos, digital scrapbooking supplies and digital scrapbooking pages and projects grows this search is great for finding things fast! Use the search feature when looking for your very specific pics or supplies.

Reason 5. Map your Images or Digital Scrapbooking Pages. Believe it or not, the Organizer helps you associate your photos or digital scrapbooking pages with certain locations by letting you put the image on a geographic map!

Once you have mapped your photos, or digital scrap pages, then they appear as red pins on the map.

Traveled abroad? Spent a summer vacation on a tropical island? Traveled out of state to see family or friends? Using this feature, you can find certain photos or images by scrolling and zooming in and out of different countries, cities, and even streets!

Using the Organizer, You can Make Things- like a CD Labels and More!

Reason 6. Make things! Once your photos, digital scrapbooking supplies, or digital scrapbooking pages are in the Organizer, then you can use the other features within Photoshop Elements to make things!

For example, I made this CD Label in only a few seconds from a digital scrapbooking page because my finished digital scrapbooking page was in the Organizer!

Because the Organizer is an easy way to organize and find photos, digital scrapbooking supplies, and digital scrapbooking pages, the Organizer is an important step in completing various Photoshop Elements projects!

That’s not all about the Organizer either! Take the Digital Scrapbooks and More Organizer tutorials and learn, step-by-step, how to use the Organizer yourself! It’s easy to use with a little training and it’s a great way to get your photos and supplies clean and tidy! Find photos or digital supplies with ease- using the Organizer!
