Valentine Cooking, then Scrapping it and sending it as a Valentine Card or Recipe Book! (Originally posted 2/11/11 by Cheri Barlow)

This year I want to try something new! Instead of sending Valentine cards to my family and friends I want to send them a Digital Recipe Album that I could email.

It would save me a bit of money, I could send it last moment, and everyone seems to love getting photos and surprises via email!

I might even print out a few scrap recipes on my home printer and include it in a special Valentine’s cookie plate that I give away!

What every I do it will be fun to scrap my Valentine recipes and then email them or wrap them up with Valentine treats! So see following and get some ideas that you might be able to use this Valentines too!

Scrap a Valentine Recipe Book, Card, or Printed Recipe!

Here how to do it!

First, find some yummy Valentine recipes or pull out some of your favorites.

If you don’t have any, here are few to get you started!

Get Photos for Scrapbooking:

Next, once you have the recipes you would like to scrap, make the recipe and get some photos of the food.

For example, I like to take photos at the beginning of the cooking or baking process.

I like to scrap the steps and add these into the scrapbooking project!

I think it is fun to see how the recipe was made and send this part of the process to family and friends too!

I then photograph the middle of the baking or cooking of the recipe too, I like seeing it just before it is fully cooked. I take a lot of photos knowing only a few will make it into my Recipe Book.

At last I like to scrap the end results of making the recipe.

It is fun to a scrap the progression of the recipe and even scrap people eating the food.

Once I get the photos so that I can scrap my Valentine’s Recipe Book ready then, I get some digital scrapbooking supplies that can be made into a Recipe book or just print one page at a time to give away as a gift with your cookie plate. Next, start scrapping your recipes in a graphic program like Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.

Decide if you are going to make a whole recipe book or just one page to accompany your Valentine goodies.

Make a Cover for your Recipe Book

If you are going to make a Valentine Recipe Book then you will want to make a cover scrap page and then scrap several of your favorite Valentine Recipes.

Scrap the other pages in the recipe book too!

If you are going to only scrap a recipe page to go with your treats then take photos of the goodies and then scrap those photos and the recipe page. Include the recipe scrap page with the goodies so whoever gets your treats also gets the recipes too!

Then, turn your Recipe Page or Book into a PDF that you can Email as a valentine card!

Take your recipe book or page and turn it into a PDF file, that can easily be email it to your friends and family – this saves money and gets your recipes out to your loved ones quickly!

Turning it into a PDF album is easy in Photoshop Elements. Here is how you do it.

First, load all your final scrapbooking pages you want in the album into Photoshop Elements the workspace or use the Organizer. Pick the PDF option. After that follow the menu and make your selections. Once you have finalized your selections Photoshop Elements will make a PDF file that you can email to your family and friends! Life is busier (and crazier) than ever now that I’m a momma, but there are a few times I think it’s critical to stop what I’m doing, take pictures of my baby, and scrap them. And holidays are that kind of a time, where you need to make the time to preserve special moments in your child’s life. Don’t let the day pass by without taking a few pics and digi-scrapping a page or two of your favorite photos.

I’ve also learned how important it is to get in a few of the photos myself. I learned my lesson this last Christmas (my son’s very first Christmas!). I was so focused on making sure I took plenty of pics of him, that I completely forgot to have anyone take any pics of me. And while I snapped a few photos of him and his Dad, as I went through my photos later, I realized that there was no first family Christmas photo of the three of us. What a bummer…

Digital scrapbooking has been a great way to keep track of my son’s holidays too. I end up taking a bunch of new photos every special occasion and if I wasn’t a digital scrapbooker, I can imagine how overwhelming all my pics would be! I don’t have to print out all my new photos every time I take them, and I don’t just let them sit on my computer to just forget about them either. After taking my photos, I quickly scan the pics and pic out a few stand-out-shots. Then, I quickly digi-scrap my few favorite photos onto a cute digital scrap kit and label it with the day, time, and place. There are many times I use Quick Pages to speed up the process even more, but regular scrapbooking kits don’t take much time either. I then take all these pages I have made over the year of birthdays, holidays, and other special events or milestones and combine them to make a photo book using an online printing company. It’s easy and it’s a great way to keep track of the year, keep important memories alive, and have a reminder of all the fun we had so I can show and give to my son when he gets a little older. Learn how to print your digi-projects at home or by using an online printing company. I love keeping these books in the family room. My guests love to look through them- they make great conversation pieces. Not to mention, I love browsing through them every once in awhile too.

Sound fun? It is really easy to make ordinary pancakes into a special memory-making event!

When making such a special Valentine’s breakfast make sure your camera is handy for taking photos during the preparation, making and eating the Heart Shaped pancakes!

Here is how you get started:

Step 1: Make up your favorite pancake mix, you might want to add a little extra water or mix than the recipe calls for so you can pour the batter into heart shapes easier. Also you might want to add some red food coloring to get a pink looking batter.

Step 2: Make your pancakes extra fun by adding things like chocolate chips, shredded coconut, sliced strawberries.

Prepare all extra items before you start cooking you pancakes so you can put the extra ingredients on the pancakes as you are cooking them.

If so then read this article and then  you can make a digital scrapbooking embellishment for your Valentine Scrapbooking projects.

I was putting some Valentine Candy in a Valentine Dish on my kitchen counter for visitors to snack on.

While I was filling the dish I noticed how pretty the candy looked in the dish, and thought it would be fun to make into a valentine embellishment.

So I got out my camera and took this photo. As soon as I took the photo I realized that it was really going to be hard to take the background out so I ran into my study and got a couple of white pieces of paper and retook the photo. (A white background is easier to take out of a photo than a multi-color one!)

Here is what I did next:

Step 1: Once I had the photo of the candy and dish with a white background I loaded it into the Editor Mode in Photoshop Elements.

(Note: it works the same way in Photoshop too!)

I make a duplicate layer and hide the original background layer incase I need it later.

Step 2: Next I select the Magnetic Lasso Tool and went around the dish.

Step 3: After the candy and dish are selected hit the Ctrl + J keys and  the selection goes on it’s own layer.

See the image to the left.

Now some selections come out perfect, but others are a bit ragged and need to be cleaned up.

So this is what has happened with the candy dish it mostly came out ok but the shadow has made it come out a little ragged in some spots and I will need to clean that up.

Step 4:  I get the Erase Tool (using a hard brush at full opacity), and start erasing on the candy dish layer to smooth out the edges.

I go around the whole candy dish and clean up the edges until it looks good.

Once the candy dish is cleaned up I turn off all the other layers, I might also add a drop shadow and then it is ready to added to a digital scrapbooking page.

Step 5: Scrap using your new Valentine Embellishment and other scrapbooking supplies!

Now you have a wonderful digital scrapbooking embellishment to use on your Valentine pages and projects!

Photo stamps are my secret weapon. After creating a very special digitally scrapped card, invitation, or note, I add the finishing touch… a Photo Stamp. And you know what? As soon as I send them out, the phone starts ringing. People go crazy over them, they love them, and I can definitely see why… they’re awesome!

I have used my own edited photos and digital scrapbooking pages to make personalized Photo Stamps, and they are a fun way to “dress-up” an envelope. I have used them for my “Save the Date” cards, Wedding invitations, and Christmas cards. I’ve had people tell me that they not only kept my card, but the envelope too …all because of the special stamp!

You too can design your own Photo Stamps through an Online Printing Company like Stamps.com (or any other website that offers personalized postage) and add a little creativity to your mail!

1. Black & White. Nothing says dramatic and passionate like a black and white photo. Gather your very best shots of you and your hunny and convert them from color to oh-so-fabulous black and white. Tip: Black and white photos exaggerate the feeling or mood of the photo, so try to use one with few distractions and “noise.” For romantic Valentine’s Day B&W photos, avoid using pics with a lot of background and scenery, and instead choose close-up portrait shots of you and your baby.
