Scrapping St Patrick’s day Using PDF stickers

As you are getting ready to celebrate St Patrick’s Day, you might notice all the FREE PDF Documents on the web.

Today if you look online you can find lots of great PDF Documents that can make fun digital scrapbooking supplies!

That’s right — digital scrapbooking supplies! That come from PDF Documents!

It almost sounds too amazing to be true.

At first it might be hard to imagine how to get a PDF document to work as a digital scrapbooking embellishment or page, but in this article we will explain how to do it!

For example, DisneyFamily.com offers these St Patrick’s Day Stickers in a PDF Document(PDF is Adobe Acrobat file format).

One thing you can do with this PDF document is to print it out, then cut it out and paste it into a physical traditional scrapbooking page. This is how most people plan to use this type of document.

But if you know how to do it you can add it to a digital scrapbooking project too!

Here are the steps to scrap PDF files in digital scrapbooking projects!

6 Steps to Scrapping PDF files:

Step 1: Go to the website that has the PDF document you want use in your scrapbooking project, and save it to your computer.

If you are following along with this article go to DisneyFamily.com and get the St Patrick’s Day Sticker set ( http://a.family.go.com/images/cms/disney/PDFs/st-patricks-day-mickey-mouse-stickers-printables-0211.pdf ) and then save the document to your computer. Use the save button or go to File > Save

Save the document to a place on your computer that you can find easily.

Step 2: Next, open the PDF document in either Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.

Next a pop-up in Photoshop Elements will appear, click on the document icon, make and select the settings and click OK

If you are using Photoshop instead of Elements, then you will do the same thing, click on the document icon, make and select the settings and click OK

Step 3: Select a sticker with the Rectangular Marquee Tool. Because the PDF Documents has some extra writing on it, and we only want one sticker at a time, we are using the Rectangular Marquee Tool in this example. Also notice that when this PDF is in either Photoshop or Elements the white areas are now transparent!

Also you can select the sticker with the Elliptical Marquee Tool. See this example in Photoshop.

***Remember all these steps work the same in Photoshop or Elements!

Step 4: Once the sticker is selected, then with the Move Tool drag and drop it on to digital scrapbooking paper or project.

Step 5: Clean up Sticker. In this sticker set there is a outline for cutting if it was printed out. However, since we are scrapping it we don’t want these lines. So use the Eraser Tool to get rid of that extra outline.

Step 6: Scrap it! Now the sticker(s) are on your digital scrapbooking page or project, add a drop shadow to the sticker to give it depth. Then add your digital photo, some text and other digital scrapbooking supplies. We used the St. Patrick’s Day Digital Scrapbooking Kit to finish off this scrapbooking project

Now we have turned this PDF Document into a digital frame we can use it to scrap making Digital Scrapbook Pages, or other things like mouse pads, calendar pages, cards and more!

Using these 6 simple steps above to scrap your own St Patrick’s Day scrapbooking page!

Also, when you find other PDF Documents that you think might be great to scrap, then just open it into Photoshop or Elements and see if you can use it in your digital scrapbooking projects!

St Patrick’s Day History and Digital Scrapbooking

Sometimes in Digital Scrapbooking it is nice to add a little bit of history to our scrapbooking pages. Then when others enjoy our projects they also might learn about the thing we are scrapping. Since St Patrick’s Day is coming up I thought I would scrap a big of history with my scrapbooking project.

History of St. Patrick’s Day

People all over the world honor St Patrick of Ireland. Some places have parades, some commemorate the holiday with Irish food, others wear green to celebrate the patron Saint.

Who is St. Patrick?

According to some historians, St Patrick was born in Britain during the 4th century, but was then kidnapped and enslaved by Irish raiders when he was a teenager.

Later he escaped his kidnappers and returned to Britain and became a priest. He later chose to return to Ireland as a missionary, in order to help spread the teachings of Christianity to pagans.

According to Irish folklore, he also used a shamrock to explain the Christian concept of Trinity to the Irish. In spite of continuous opposition from the native leaders, he continued to evangelize for thirty years while baptizing newly converted Christians and establishing monasteries, churches, and schools.

He died on March 17th and was canonized by the local church.

In America, St. Patrick’s Day was first publicly celebrated in Boston in 1737 where a large population of Irish immigrants resided.

Nearly 200 years later, the first St. Patrick’s Day parade in the Irish Free State was held in Dublin in 1931. During the mid 90’s, the Irish government also began a campaign to promote tourism in Ireland on March 17th.

For many Catholics, they quietly celebrate this day of religious observance by going to mass, however, for others, St. Patrick’s Day slowly evolved to become a celebration of Irish heritage.

As the years passed this holiday has been come to be associated with the legendary shamrocks and many other Irish symbols like leprechauns, wearing green, drinking and so forth.

Other places that join in on this celebration include Japan, New Zealand, Argentina, and Canada, along with many cities across the United States.

St Patrick’s Day, After School Snacks, and Digital Scrapbooking projects to Share

When my children where little I loved celebrating days and even weeks before the big (or small) holiday! So leading up to a holiday like St Patrick’s Day each day for about week before I would make a special St Patrick’s Day snack for them. It was nice for them as they would look forward to the surprise treats each day, and then they would be willing to tell me about their school day too!

After School Snacks for St Patrick’s Day Fun

This week treat your child to a fun St Patrick’s Day Snack!

When I was small my mother always had a special after school snack for us when we got home from school. I remember the house filled with the scent of freshly baked cinnamon rolls and other handmade treats!

I loved it as a child but I don’t have time to make everything from scratch like my mother did, so I need to take short cuts – but still wanted that fun feeling for my children.

Here are some magical after school snacks that can be fun – but are easy and time saving too!

Here are some St Patrick’s Day snack ideas:

Lucky Green Celery and Cucumber Dipping Snack

One super easy and delicious snack that you can make quickly for an after school snack is this Lucky Green Celery and Cucumber dip. To make, cut up some celery slices and cucumber wedges. Add some green food coloring to cream cheese, mix thoroughly and put into a dish to serve as dip for the vegetables.

Shamrock Shakes
In a blender put two cups of milk, two cups lime sherbet, and two ripe bananas. Then blend together and its ready to serve.

Leprechaun Punch
Fill a punch bowl with 7-up then add several scoops of lime sherbet, as the sherbet melts it turns the soda green.

St Patrick’s Day Magic Pot of Soup
Coat the inside of a crock pot with green food coloring (before the children get home!). Then the children add any cream based soup, and let the children start to stir. They will be surprised that Magic Pot of soup turns green!!

Use Custom St. Patrick’s Day Brushes to help make your after school snack!

Here is a recipe for another after school snack that you can use a custom brush as a template to make a fun Shamrock Cookie!

Follow the easy steps to make your own:

Step 1: Load the St. Patrick’s Day Brush Set in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements — and pick the clover brush. Make a new document, resize the brush to cookie size and “stamp” the brush on the document. Then Print it.

( The image above is using the clover brush and “Stamping” it on to a new document to make a shamrock template)

Once you have printed the clover or “shamrock” on a paper – cut out the the shamrock. Now you have a template for your cookie design!

Step 2: Make a sugar cookie from your favorite recipe or use pre-made sugar cookie dough. You will also need some colored sugar – you can make this with sugar and food coloring, or buy it pre-made to save time. I also cut some of the extra paper away from my shamrock template so it would be easier to use with the cookie.

Next slice the pre-made cookies into 1/4 inch slices (or roll and cut into circles homemade cookie dough). Then, I took my hand and flattened the cookies a bit – so my template would fit better on the on cookie.

Then I put the template over the cookies and got my green colored sugar.

I sprinkled the colored sugar over the Shamrock template and then pressed the extra sugar into the shape. Remove the template, and put on next cookie – repeat sprinkling on each cookie till all have green Shamrock sugar shapes.

Then bake the cookies according to the recipe.

Step 3: Serve Cookies with Green Milk (milk with a few drops of green food coloring added). This makes a very fun after school snake for St Patrick’s Day!

Step 4: To keep the memories by taking photos and scrapping them!

If you want to keep the memories alive make sure and take a little time to scrap the fun!

After I have taken photos of all the snacks we have shared leading up to the holiday, I also like to make a recipe book to keep the snack recipes and share with family and friends too!

After I scrap the recipes, I turn it into a digital recipe book or PDF file and then I email my recipe book to loved ones

Put a St Patrick’s Day Note in Your Child’s Lunch Box! Send a little Love Today!

What kid doesn’t like finding a note in their lunch box?

My children always told me how special they felt when they opened their lunch box and found a little note from mom!

St. Patrick’s day is a perfect time to add a little special love note to your child’s lunch box, backpack or pen case!

You might even consider putting a note in your husband’s brief case too!

Now you could buy cards to put in all the lunches — expensive! You could scribble in a note pad and tear it out and place in the lunch box — boring!

So what can a busy mom do?!

Well there is a very easy way to make a quick note but jazz it up so it is exciting while keeping the cost low!

Grab you digital scrapbooking supplies, custom brushes and open up Photoshop or Photoshop Elements and start scrapping your note cards!

First, use a scrapbooking paper for your background, then put embellishments on, with the Text Tool type your message like “Happy St. Patrick’s Day!” add your child’s name for a personal touch!

Next, print the note cards, then cut them out and handwrite a special note your child!

After you have your special St Patrick’s Day Note card for your child’s lunch box finished, then put it into your child’s lunch box, sack, backpack or pen case for a delightful and fun surprise!

Using this same idea you can make a quick note card for a plate of St Patrick’s Day cookies to put on a doorstep of a friend or neighbor!

Also you can use these cards for marking food and making a food info card for parties too!

After you make Food Info Cards, use them around the food to let people know what you are serving!

You can add things like: names of dishes, warnings if food is spicy or has ingredients that might be allergens to some guests “like this dish is Gluten Free”, or for make a card for other dietary restrictions like “this dish is a vegetarian dish!”

Also, don’t forget you can use them as a Place Card at your dinner table with the name of each guest too!

Make Hint Cards for a St Patrick’s Day Game too!

While you are making a few Place Cards or Note Cards for St Patrick’s Day why not try make in a few Hint Cards for a scavenger hunt game? They are easy to make along the rest of the cards you are making and you type or write the clues inside for a fun game!

Helpful Hints for Saving Memories!

Recently, as I was doing some work, I came across an article that I had written at about this time last year. It was an article about a funny and entertaining experience that I had enjoyed with my children – (see No Such Luck or… My Lucky Day, Depends on which way you look at it). It was interesting to me that though I remembered writing about this experience, I didn’t remember what the experience was until I re-read the article. It brought back some really good memories!

Fortunately I had pictures along with the article that really made the memories vivid ones.

As busy parents and grandparents I wonder how often we have experiences that we completely forget about that could have been a meaningful part of our history. In my case I am afraid that it happens all too often.

Here are a 4 tips that I have for you that have helped me become better at not letting important memories slip away.

Tip 1: Keep an events journal. This can be as easy as recording on your daily calendar the events that you participated in that day. Record at least weekly in a journal the feelings that you had about those events that are listed in your events journal or calendar. Every once in a while I feel that I have had an experience that is really special. I have a book that I call my Happy Moments Book. Whenever we have an experience as a family or individually that I want to remember I record it in this special book.

Tip 2: Carry your camera with you everywhere. So many opportunities used to arise that I missed a perfect picture because I didn’t have a camera with me. I have learned to leave one in my car or in my purse so that I can capture those moments that I don’t want to forget. It is also there in case I am in an accident and need pictures. Cameras are so small now that it is easy to keep a camera with you all the time so take advantage of this wonderful way to preserve memories.

Tip 3: Decide how often you would like to transfer the pictures from your camera to your computer.

This should be done as often as needed so that you always have plenty of space on your camera for unexpected picture taking opportunities.

I like to do this once a month and then I tag the pictures with the month and year so that I can find them easily when I want to.

Also, you might want to check these tutorials Get Organized in the Organizer a Simple Start for Elements Lesson 1, and Lesson 2 and Lesson 3) — it shows you how to tag your photos and save them to a CD as a backup!

Tip 4: Remember that there are so many ways to preserve your special pictures. It is very common for me to find my children on the computer looking through the picture files. It is such a fun way for them to recall all the great times they have had growing up. I keep a special file for all of my digital scrapbooking pages. The kids really like to go into this file and check out the pictures of them that I have scrapped.

I remember looking at picture albums as a child and now those albums are so worn out and the pictures have faded.

That is a great thing about storing those pictures on your computer, they don’t wear out.

I also make a disk to keep in my home and a disk that I send to a close member of the family in case for some reason my pictures are lost.

It is also very fun to scrapbook the pictures that you take and send them off to have a book made. This type of scrapbooking can include information about events as well as journaling pages.

This way it is easy to show off family members to friends that come by your home. These books are so beautifully put together and look terrific on a end table or coffee table in a living room.

Make a St Patrick’s Day Recipes Book to Email to Family and Friends! Start a New Tradition!

I love St Patrick’s Day! You don’t even need to be Irish to have some fun! I usually send cards to all my friends and family. I think it is just nice to let them know I am thinking about them even if they don’t really celebrate St Patrick’s day.

This year I was looking over St Patrick’s Day recipes and thinking maybe I can combine recipes and greetings for my family all into one!

In other words, I think this year I will save some postage and email a St Patrick’s Greeting and Recipe Book!

Here is how I am going to do it!

Step 1: Get the recipes I want to use in the “Greeting Card/Recipe Book”. If you have photos even better!

If you don’t have any St Patrick’s Recipes here are few to get you started!

Recipe: Green Eggs St Patrick’s Day Breakfast ~ Digital Scrapbooks and More

Step 2: Get Digital Scrapbooking Supplies. I like using The Lucky Green Quick Page Album Kit 1 (8.5×11″) because it has pre-designed scrapbooking pages with recipe and notes right in the design. And, because the set is a Quick Page Kit all the work is basically done - all I have to do is add my photos, recipes and a few included WordArt phrases and I am done with the scrapbooking part!

REALLY, it is that easy!

This kit is also good as it comes in standard US paper size which makes printing and putting in a binder easier!

Step 3: Scrap my digital scrapbooking recipe pages. It is easy to make get digital scrapbooking pages using Photoshop. I just bring my digital photos, the Quick Page, WordArt and type a few words to personalize and I am ready to make the next recipe page!

If you like you can use Photoshop Elements to do the same thing! If you are new to digital scrapbooking and would like to know more about Photoshop versus Photoshop Elements then see this article!

After I have made my digital scrapbooking recipe pages in either Photoshop or Photoshop Elements I can save them and turn them into a digital PDF album!

Step 4: Turn my scrap pages into a Digital Scrapbooking Recipe Book in PDF format and email to family and friends. It will save me money on printing, shipping boxes, and postage when I turn my digital scrapbooking recipe book into a PDF album and email it to friends and family.

Note: I have my view turned on to 2-page viewing – but you could set it to see only one page at a time.

These pages where easy and fast to make and now I plan to send this to my family and friends this St Patrick’s Day instead of a greeting card! I think they will enjoy it! And who knows maybe they will even try some of the recipes!
