How about a Book this President Day?

One thing that might be fun to do is go to your local library and check out a few books about the Presidents. One suggestions might be the book: So You Want to Be President? by Judith St. George

Brief summary:
The idea behind this humorous yet informative book is that anyone can grow up to be president. The book is filled with all kinds of facts about 42 previous presidents. A sample of the fun in the book goes like this: Nine presidents played instruments; nine did not go to college. Jefferson was “top-notch in the brains department.” Ten presidents were generals in the military. Almost any job can lead to the White House, including tailor and actor. If you are dishonest, you get kicked out.

The author compares past presidents and their statures, personalities and qualifications to show how varied they’ve really all been, and gives readers a fun look at the up and down sides of working in the Oval Office. This book was the 2001 winner of the Caldecott Medal, which is awarded annually to the most distinguished American picture book for children, and David Small’s caricature-style illustrations will draw both children and adults straight through the book from cover to cover.

Or what about this book? Smart About the Presidents by Jon Buller

Brief Summary: The kids in Ms. Brandt’s class are doing another group report-this time on all forty-three presidents of the United States, one per page. The book is current through the 2004 presidential election and includes two fill-in pages for kids to record its outcome. There is also a floor plan of the White House, a list of presidential perks, and lots of interesting info about all the presidents, from George Washington to George W. Each page is jam-packed with trivia, fun facts, handwritten captions, and information on the historical events of each presidency. Written by a team of well-known author/artists, this 64-page Smart About book is a great resource for kids.

President Day Activity

Pick a president and tell the family about him at dinner time. This is a great way to learn more about different presidents and get your family talking around the dinner table!

Have a President’s Day Menu!

Rachael Ray has made a supper fun menu for President’s Day so you might want to check it out!

To get these recipe and ideas go Rachael Ray’s website and plan your President’s Day menu!

Just reading Rachael’s menu for President’s Day can spark fun ideas for making a President’s Day dinner for you family.

But if you don’t have time to make a full dinner menu or a President’s Day Party, then how about at least making Macaroni & Cheese? Why? Because Thomas Jefferson, the third president, is credited with introducing macaroni to the United States.

After he served as U.S. Ambassador to France, he brought back to the US the first macaroni machine

Here is a recipe for homemade Mac & Cheese ~ From FoodNetwork

Also, another fun President fact: “Macaroni” was the name of the pony owned by President Kennedy’s daughter, Caroline. The pony received thousands of fan letters from children across the nation.

So grab the Kraft Macaroni box or make macaroni and cheese from scratch and tell your children about the Presidents!

Now you have couple of ideas for your President’s Day, go ahead and start making memories today!

Including scrapping your day to keep the memories alive and so you can share them with your family and friends too!

With President’s Day just around the corner, my child’s elementary school is decorating the halls and classroom walls to fit the occasion. Sometimes when I am looking for a great idea for a craft for my kids that will also be a learning experience for them, I like to wander through the halls of the schools and take pictures of these crafts and then I go home and help my children make one of the crafts. This year however, for President’s Day, my youngest daughter came home with a project that I thought was extremely cool and I would like to share it with you.

She brought home an almost life size, cut out of a person. The cut out was made from a white poster board and was the head down to the waist. Her assignment was to write a report on any President of the United States that she chose and then to decorate the cut out of the person to resemble the President that she had chosen to write the report on. The President could be decorated in any way that the child and (parent) chose. We had a blast with this project.

My daughter is fascinated with animals and nature so when she heard that Jimmy Carter was a Peanut Farmer she knew that her choice for her project would be him. She is only in 4th grade and so Politics really don’t play a huge part in the kids choices.

Her best friend chose Calvin Coolidge because he had a pet Raccoon in the White House. ( I didn’t know that until I saw her report). Interesting and fun stuff. Her poster of President Coolidge was holding his Raccoon in his hands. One girl’s Presidents’ suit was made completely out of Jelly Beans. So as you can imagine, the sky is the limit, anything goes on this project, which is what makes it fun.

We decided that instead of going for the Presidential look that we would make a young Jimmy Carter that was dressed up like a farmer. So we went to work. I had an old pair of overalls that have been in my Halloween dress up box for years and so I cut them down to size. We drew the face on our President, had him wear a Red, and blue checkered shirt and then put the overalls on him. To top off the project we put peanuts in his overall pockets and had a few sticking out the top. He was a hit with my daughter and off to school she went with him and her report.

A few days later I went to the school to take pictures of her project and I noticed that the peanuts were missing! I guess some little child was really hungry, so I put more peanuts in his pockets. Then when she brought him home the peanuts were gone again and I asked her if they had been eaten at school and she replied “Well, I was really hungry on the way home from school.” Another memory never to be forgotten. I actually had already taken some really cute pictures to scrapbook by this time but I want to remind you to take pictures of your kids school projects right when the project is finished. That way you won’t lose the opportunity in case something happens to it on the way to or from school.

One thing I have struggled with raising children is what to do with their school projects when they bring them home. They work so hard on some of them and it’s hard just to throw them away at times. I have always kept one special box per child and let them keep some of their smaller projects, but then they sometimes have big pieces of artwork etc. that are hard to store. I have the perfect solution for you if you struggle with this. Start a school work scrapbook for each child and at the end of each year have it made into a special book for them as a remembrance of that grade. So, when each piece of work that is special is brought home, take a picture of it with or without the child, digitally scrapbook it that week and you will then have one more page to put in your scrapbook. The best thing is that you can then throw away unwanted clutter, guilt free!

I hope that you enjoy these ideas as you raise your little families. Have a wonderful President’s Day. Take time to do a scrapbooking page if you are lucky enough to have the day off!

I would have been a very young child at the time and did not realize that our country used to celebrate George Washington’s birthday and Abraham Lincolns birthday on two separate days, the 12th and 22nd of February.

Now we honor all presidents of our country by celebrating Presidents day on the 3rd Monday of February each year. This year we celebrate February 16th.

I hadn’t ever given much thought to Presidents day until recently when my sister asked me if my family had any big plans for this special day. She asked if our family celebrates with any particular traditions. Sort of embarrassed I said no, but it has nagged at me every since then.

I asked my teenaged daughter if they had discussed Presidents Day at school and she said no. This disappointed me. Then I looked around the grade school my younger children attend. There were portraits drawn in life size form of some past presidents on one wall. Other than that, there is nothing at this point to indicate that the children are learning that Presidents day is anything other than a long weekend to look forward to. Hopefully the bare walls are only because the kids have a full week left before the holiday is to be celebrated. I’m sure the walls will soon display some wonderful artwork indicating that the children have been taught that this day is a way to celebrate our past presidents lives and how their actions contributed to establishing our country’s independence and continue to help assure our freedoms to this day.

However, through this process of questioning my children’s history education, I couldn’t help coming up with this question. Shouldn’t I as a mother be teaching my children why we celebrate on this day. Aren’t I ultimately responsible to be teaching them that we as citizens of the United States owe every President of the United States a great deal of gratitude for their sacrifices on our behalf.

So, I began to put a little more thought into how we will spend the upcoming Presidents weekend. I made a list of the things that I want to accomplish that goes something like this:

1. Sit down with the children and discuss why we celebrate Presidents day.

2. Give thanks with them for the blessing of living in a free country.

3. Come up with a list of services that we can do for our community this year.

4. Complete one of these acts of service for our community that will indicate our gratitude.

5. Make a commitment to paying more attention when saying the Pledge of Allegiance or singing the National Anthem. (This is a goal for my family especially when we attend sporting events).

I have come to understand how important it is as I begin new family traditions or as we as a family work toward our dreams and goals that I record what we want to accomplish. I believe that a goal that is not written down is just a wish and so….I have now begun writing them down and I will also write about the results of this weekend.

It will be very rewarding to write down our feelings about the things that we accomplish this weekend. I can do this in my favorite way and that is with digital scrapbooking. I’m sure that as camera crazy as I have become over the past year that I will take some amazing pictures this weekend and then I will have a blast scrapbooking them. For me, the dialog that goes along with the picture is just as important as or even more important than the picture.
