6 Steps to Creating Your Own Personal Journal through Digital Scrapbooking (Originally Posted 01/16/2010 by Jennifer Barlow)

Journaling is one of the easiest ways to relax and let go of stress. It’s easy to do but can be a little intimidating to start if you’re not already actively journaling!

But forget the boring, old-fashion way of journaling (using a lousy notepad and pen), instead, why not try making a journal that’s really special- with digital scrapbooking! By digitally scrapbooking your dreams, goals, and life you can create a full-featured visual diary. Easily combine digital photos, text, and gorgeous digital layouts to quickly make a journal that isn’t just good for reading, but one that you will keep going back to just to admire!

Here are 6 easy steps to creating a personalized, one-of-a-kind digital scrapbooking journal:

1. All About You. Collect your favorite digital photos, from silly-faced pics, to serious poses, and beautiful smiles, and create a digital scrapbooking page that shows off the many sides of you! Use multiple photos and make an entire digital scrapbooking page collage-style, or just a section of the page with your photos. Another idea, instead of collage-style would be to add each different photo in random spots on the page leaving room to decorate around each picture and add some text. Rather than including dates, times, and places next to each photo, instead add text that describes your character in each image. If you have space on the digital scrapbooking page, add a few sentences underneath the general “emotion title” and add more detail as to what that emotion or personality-trait is all about. Example: “Goofy Girl. I love to just be a nerd and have fun! I am a huge goofball that loves to laugh and be silly.”

2. Family History. Now that you have created a page that shows off the many sides of you, go a step deeper by going into who you are based on your family history. This page can be especially powerful if you are interested in genealogy or want to create a special tribute to your own personal background.  

3. Dedication Pages. Who are the most important people in your life? Make an entire digital scrapbooking page all about the people you love more than anything- a husband, wife, kids, boyfriend, girlfriend, best friends, and pets! Choose a digital scrapbooking background and embellishments that best suit their personality. Add captions next to the photos of this person or pet of experiences shared that make you smile or laugh. Make sure to add at least one special small story on each dedication page- a moment that really stands out in your mind. Look back at your completed dedication pages whenever you want to remind yourself of your blessings, of the people that you love… and who care about you too!

A dedication page is also a great way to remember a loved one that has passed away. Use photos, funny/special/wonderful stories of moments shared together to tell a person or a pet’s story, what they brought into your life, and exactly what they meant to you.

4. Life -Changing Experiences. Besides sharing a bit about your character, your background, and the people that mean so much to you, another important digital scrapbooking page to make is the life-experiences that have shaped you- your thoughts, your decisions, and your life. Create a page or two about a stand-out experience that really changed your life and made you into the person you are today. If you don’t have pictures of the actual life-changing thing or event, use digital scrapbooking papers, embellishments, and supplies to create the page’s “mood” and include text to tell your story. Whether your life-changing experience was winning the lottery or something that was difficult or challenging, use this page to vent, express, and describe what you have been through!

5. Likes & Loves. What do you love to do? What are your hobbies, what relaxes you, what do you like to do in your spare time, what makes you smile? Make an entire digital scrapbooking page dedicated to the things, places, and activities that you’re passionate about. Copy and paste images online and use them within your personal digital scrapbooking projects if you don’t have actual photos, but of course, it’s always best if you have real photos of yourself enjoying a hobby or eating your favorite food, etc. It may seem like a simple concept, or an unnecessary page, but it’s an important part of what makes you- YOU! The things we like to do, the things that we enjoy and make us happy, they’re all an important part of who we are. Look back at this completed likes & loves page if you ever feel down in the dumps and need a little lift!

6. Goals & Dreams. So, what’s in store for you and your future? What are your deepest hopes, dreams, and desires? Making digital scrapbooking pages dedicated to what you want out of life is a great way to set goals and have something visual to look back at to motivate you! Got New Year’s Resolutions? Include them in these goals & dreams pages and create a real, visual plan to get you what you want and where you need to go. Use real photos as well as online pictures to complete these pages and let you “see” a clear vision of your goals! Besides adding text to map out your plans of action, include your favorite inspirational quotes to an additional boost of motivation!

Today Make a resolution or Goal to Scrap a Digital Scrapbooking Page each month!

It is a good time to set a goal that you can keep!

Yes, this goal is easy and fun to set and keep! That is to Scrap at least one digital scrapbooking page per month!

If I do that at the end of the year I will have enough digital scrapbooking pages to make digital calendar or a scrap album!

It was easy to accomplish my goal because at Digital Scrapbooks and More they sale lots of great supplies, but I think I will take a shortcut and use Quick Pages! Now you can create pretty digital scrapbooking projects very FAST with Quick Page Kits!

My goal or resolution started a few years back because prior to making this commitment I ran into this problem: being to busy in December to make all my scrapbooking pages and scrap gifts.

Not being ready at the end of the year also made me miss out on great discounts at my favorite online printing companies!

So, I ended up having to spend lots more money because I needed more time to scrap my pages, and missed the discount! Sadly sometimes I even missed the Holiday I was trying to scrap for because I couldn’t get ready at the last moment!!!

As a digital scrapbookers, I like to make interesting scrapbooking gifts as holiday presents for all of my friends and family (like personalized calendars, puzzles, mouse pads, coffee mugs, aprons, greeting cards, framed scrap pages, or photo/digital scrapbooking albums). It’s around that time that I receive emailed-coupons from many online printing companies offering huge discounts on the exact items I had been hoping to create and buy for others!

However, most of the time I end up missing these incredible online printing discounts for two unfortunate reasons:

First, these personalized gifts require a finished digital scrapbooking page in order to personalize the calendar, mug, or gift that is being so heavily discounted; and many times I just don’t have any new digital scrapbooking pages ready!

These special holiday discounts usually expire quickly maybe even that very same day, or just a few days later; which sometimes is not nearly enough time to pull all the pictures together and digitally scrap!

The second reason is that when the deals show-up in my email inbox, it is usually the busiest time of year (with the holidays, family, friends, dinner parties, work parties, cooking this, eating that, and always being on-the-go!), and I am not always on my computer checking my email with everything I have going on! Sometimes I feel so rushed to participate in a spectacular online printing deal, and it’s so frustrating to be overwhelmed at such an already busy (and sometimes stressful) time of year!

The bottom line is that if I had some pre-made digital scrapbooking pages that were already ready-to-go, then when those wonderful sales showed up in my inbox, I could take full-advantage of them without feeling rushed, or without skipping the opportunity all-together!

In prior years I missed the sales and discounts, but this year because I had get my goal of scrapping at least one scrap page a month I was able to take advantage of all the great deals! Plus I wasn’t exhausted because I had planned ahead!!

So, that said, I am going to keep this same goal this year too! So my goal for this up-and-coming year: I WILL SCRAP ONE DIGITAL SCRAPBOOKING PAGE PER MONTH (and more than one page if I have time… but I can at least scrap one page!)

It doesn’t take much time to scrap one page. I usually take new digital photos every month, so it’s not like I don’t have new pictures that need to be scrapped! Not to mention, at the end of the month, last month’s digital scrapbooking supplies are often discounted; so I could buy them at a discounted rate and then scrap them each month.

Another good reason to do one each month is so that I don’t have to wait until the busiest time of the year (the end of the year) to scrap all of my digital photos from a busy and eventful year! Scrapping one page per month will give me time to relax and enjoy the holidays, instead of procrastinating and waiting until the last month to scrap all of that year’s activities.

And last, but not least, by scrapping one page per month I can always take advantage of the fabulous discounts on gifts made from my scrapbooking pages at the end of the year, now that I will be prepared with plenty of great digitally scrapped projects!

The great thing about digital scrapbooking is that I can take one digital scrapped page and make lots of fun gifts! Wow, that saves time! My goal or resolution started a few years back because prior to making this commitment I ran into this problem: being to busy in December to make all my scrapbooking pages and scrap gifts. Not being ready at the end of the year also made me miss out on great discounts at my favorite online printing companies! I ended up having to spend lots more money because I needed more time to scrap my pages, and missed the discount! Sadly sometimes I even missed the Holiday I was trying to scrap for because I couldn’t get ready at the last moment!!!

As a digital scrapbookers, I like to make interesting scrapbooking gifts as holiday presents for all of my friends and family (like personalized calendars, puzzles, mouse pads, coffee mugs, aprons, greeting cards, framed scrap pages, or photo/digital scrapbooking albums). It’s around that time that I receive emailed-coupons from many online printing companies offering huge discounts on the exact items I had been hoping to create and buy for others!

However, most of the time I end up missing these incredible online printing discounts for two unfortunate reasons:

First, these personalized gifts require a finished digital scrapbooking page in order to personalize the calendar, mug, or gift that is being so heavily discounted; and many times I just don’t have any new digital scrapbooking pages ready!

These special holiday discounts usually expire quickly maybe even that very same day, or just a few days later; which sometimes is not nearly enough time to pull all the pictures together and digitally scrap!

The second reason is that when  the deals show-up in my email inbox, it is usually the busiest time of year (with the holidays, family, friends, dinner parties, work parties, cooking this, eating that, and always being on-the-go!), and I am not always on my computer checking my email with everything I have going on! Sometimes I feel so rushed to participate in a spectacular online printing deal, and it’s so frustrating to be overwhelmed at such an already busy (and sometimes stressful) time of year!

The bottom line is that if I had some pre-made digital scrapbooking pages that were already ready-to-go, then when those wonderful sales showed up in my inbox, I could take full-advantage of them without feeling rushed, or without skipping the opportunity all-together! In prior years I missed the sales and discounts, but this year because I had get my goal of scrapping at least one scrap page a month I was able to take advantage of all the great deals! Plus I wasn’t exhausted because I had planned ahead!!

So, that said, I am going to keep this same goal this year too! So my New Year’s Resolution for this up-and-coming year: I WILL SCRAP ONE DIGITAL SCRAPBOOKING PAGE PER MONTH (and more than one page if I have time… but I can at least scrap one page!)

It doesn’t take much time to scrap one page. I usually take new digital photos every month, so it’s not like I don’t have new pictures that need to be scrapped! Not to mention, at the end of the month, last month’s digital scrapbooking supplies are often discounted; so I could buy them at a discounted rate and then scrap them each month.

Another good reason to do one each month is so that I don’t have to wait until the busiest time of the year (the end of the year) to scrap all of my digital photos from a busy and eventful year! Scrapping one page per month will give me time to relax and enjoy the holidays, instead of procrastinating and waiting until the last month to scrap all of that year’s activities.

And last, but not least, by scrapping one page per month I can always take advantage of the fabulous discounts on gifts made from my scrapbooking pages at the end of the year, now that I will be prepared with plenty of great digitally scrapped projects!

The great thing about digital scrapbooking is that I can take one digital scrapped page and make lots of fun gifts! Wow, that saves time! Now the holiday are coming to an end, you might want to have your child or your family send out personalized Thank You cards to those that gave you gifts!

Today if you look online you can find lots of great PDF Documents that can make fun digital scrapbooking supplies like a Thank You card!

Here is one way to make a Thank You Card using a FREE PDF document.

5 Steps to Scrapping PDF files:

Step 1:  Go to the website that has the PDF document you want use in your scrapbooking project like scrapping a Thank You card, and save it to your computer.

If you are following along with this article go to FamilyFun.com’s Photo Thank You Frame and then save the document to your computer. Use the save button or go to File > Save

Save the document to a place on your computer that you can find easily.

Step 2: Next, open the PDF document in either Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. Note: the following steps will work basically the same in Photoshop or Elements even though the demonstration will be focused on how-to in Elements

Next a pop-up in Photoshop Elements will appear, click on the document icon, make and select the settings and click OK

If you are using Photoshop instead of Elements, then you will do the same thing, click on the document icon, make and select the settings and click OK

Step 3: Select the Thank You card with the Rectangular Marquee Tool. Because the PDF Documents has some extra writing on it, and we only want the Thank You card using the Rectangular Marquee Tool in this example can help us select only the Frame.

Also notice that when this PDF is in either Photoshop or Elements the white areas are now transparent!

Step 4: Make a New Document regular paper size 8.5×11” with a white background.

Next take the Thank You card is selected, then with the Move Tool drag and drop it on to new scrapbooking document. or

Now your scrapbooking project should look like this:

Step 5: Scrap It and Print It! Add your photo, text, then print the Thank You card in your home printer. Fold it and write your own text in the inside. Put in an envelope and mail to that luck person!

It is fun to learn about using PDF files, and Thank You cards are also a great idea for a quick and very simple card.While this kind of card is cute, why not learn how to make better Thank You Card?  Sometimes we want to make even more personalized then just taking a premade PDF file. For example, we want to scrap a whole card, using our special scrapbooking paper and embellishments. So in this article we will give a few more tips for getting those great photos for your digital scrapbooking projects from all your holiday events.

Many of the photo examples in this article will be photos of the winter holiday season, but these tips will work on any holiday ~ in fact, they are great for everyday photography too!

Just a reminder are starting this article where Holiday Photo Tips: Part 1  and Holiday Photo Tips: Part 2 – (Tip 1 through Tip 5) left off!

Tip 6: Look for the Reflections in the Holiday, and Capture both the image and the Reflection.

One the quickest and easiest ways to add an artistic touch to your holiday photos is to focus on capturing reflections in any place it might appear.

For example in San Diego in December they have a boat parade in December, it is fun to capture the boats decorated with lights but it is nice to make sure and capture the reflections of the lights in the water too!

More reflections in the water are extra fun with these light from the boat shining in the water. Then adding such photos make a extra fun digital scrapbooking page

This holiday season besides reflections in water, you can look for reflections in puddles in the street,  or in ice, ice sculptures, or even in Ice sickles

Keep a look out for interesting splashes of color, reflected from Christmas lights and other holiday decorations too.

Reflections also are great in glass, mirrors, and other lights. Like these New Year glasses below filled with cheer and reflections. This photo could work great in a New Year’s digital scrapbooking project too!

Candles also are a great source of reflections, but really reflections can happen in many places so keep your eyes open for the that photo shot that has reflections in it!

Reflections can be somewhat focused like the images above or they can be somewhat out of focus, just capturing the reflections.

Tip 7: Capture Just the Reflection

The Holidays can be a perfect source of abstract images.

The out of focused or abstract photos that suggest the essence of the holidays without being direct and explicit, because the photo captures reflections.

With capturing the “Just the Reflections” your photos can create a great mood for your Digital Scrapbooking Pages and projects

Take a look around this holiday you might be surprised how many reflections you can find and how many creative photos you can capture!!!

Tip 7: Shoot Photo First, Ask Question Later!  Take candid photos during the holidays. The posed photos are fun, but you can get some great photos if you take random, candid shots too!

Unlike posed portrait photos, with the candid photo, the photographer doesn’t get to direct the person being photographed. The real skill of a great candid photographer is being patient, watching, observing and really just waiting for the perfect moment when the person(s) and nature comes together for the perfect photo!

For example, taking candid shots of a child opening a gift – or playing with a gift for the first time. People having fun at a New Year party like the photos below.

To catch those very special candid shots by being alert and ready! When the photo op comes up, then you have to have your camera ready to fire off and catch the shot! If you think a good picture might be coming  then start taking the photos and see if you can capture the event as it is happening and if you have a camera positioned, set up and ready then you should be able to get some treasured candid photos! A fast shutter speed can also be a helpful way to have your camera set up and ready to go too!

Exercise your powers of observations. Wait for the right moment and learn to anticipate what might happen, and then take the photo when it does happen!

It is fun to take the photos using these tips and make digital scrapbooking pages with them!

Here is my story:

About three years ago the Principal at the elementary school that I work at approached me and said she would like to sell Candy Grams at Christmas time.

You see each month we send out a school newsletter and in the November news letter she always asks those that are in need of some extra financial help this year to fill out the included form and return it to the school.

Well, the needs were great that year and have become greater every year since. So, we started selling Candy Grams to earn money to support our special families at our school.

At first we didn’t know what to expect. We made several hundred copies of a little note that said:

Then we had the teachers all donate a couple of boxes of Candy Canes. We then taped a candy cane to the back of each note. We sent out a note to the parents announcing our plan and letting them know when children could start purchasing them at .50 cents a piece.

The big day came and I and a teacher from the school stood behind a table ready to help the children write their notes after they had eaten their lunch. We were overwhelmed at the sight of 100 or more children waiting in line the first day to buy one. We had 6^th grade children helping the younger children write their notes, putting Candy Canes on and putting them in the correct teachers bag to deliver to the child it was intended for. Three hours later we had sold all of the candy canes, I think 400 or so, and had to go and buy some more. This continued throughout the week. We made sure that each of the 625 students at our school received at least one Candy Gram.

This was our third year of selling Candy Grams and I have learned some new tricks to make the process smoother, quicker and even better. So this year we sold 2610 Candy Grams altogether totaling $1300 to share with some very special families from our school and we did it all .50 cents at a time. This amazes me every time I think about it and I am so impressed with the kind and giving children that literally broke open their piggy banks to make this happen. Doesn’t that just warm your heart the way it does mine?

As I was contemplating all the good that happens at this time of year, I began thinking about our Candy Gram project and realized that I want to live my life “.50 cents at a time” this next year. Can you imagine all the good that can be done “.50 cents at a time” or in other words if I set one “.50 cent goal” to reach at a time and then set another one and reach it and so on…Can you imagine all that could be accomplished in a year. I wonder if I could accomplish 2610 goals this year if I looked at it with the right kind of heart and if I did it with only “.50 cent goals” instead of “$100 dollar goals” at a time. Thus my theme for the coming new year “.50 cents at a time!”

So, one of my goals is to scrapbook all of the wonderful pictures that I have of my children from the past year. Another goal is to scrapbook a calendar for the 2011. If I look at these two goals collectively they overwhelm me. But…if I break them down into smaller goals or a “.50 goal” then they become an achievable goal. So one goal that I will set is to set aside one hour a week on a specified day that I can get started. Some of you with young children may want to set just 10 minutes a week to get started or try 10 minutes a day. Another goal that I want to set is to carry my camera with me all of the time. I have a small camera that can remain in my purse. I find myself missing out on so many picture taking moments just because I took the camera out and left it home. One more goal that I think will help so much is to make just one calendar page a month from new pictures that I have taken. I think if I can achieve these three goals in January that I will naturally set some more for February and so on. This makes my ultimate goal of becoming a great digital scrap booker become realistic to me.

Just as a Candy Gram at a time we provided Christmas for several children, we can set one goal at a time for ourselves and we will be amazed at the outcome!

At the end of the year, I like to make interesting scrapbooking gifts as holiday presents for all of my friends and family (like personalized calendars, puzzles, coffee mugs, aprons, or photo/digital scrapbooking albums). It’s around that time that I receive emailed-coupons from many online printing companies offering huge discounts on the exact items I had been hoping to create and buy for others! However, most of the time I end up missing these incredible online printing discounts for two unfortunate reasons: First, these personalized gifts require a finished digital scrapbooking page in order to personalize the calendar, mug, or gift that is being so heavily discounted; and many times I just don’t have any new digital scrapbooking pages ready! These special holiday discounts usually expire that very same day, or just a few days later; which sometimes is not nearly enough time to pull all the pictures together and digitally scrap! The second reason is that when the deals show-up in my email inbox, it is usually the busiest time of year (with the holidays, family, friends, dinner parties, work parties, cooking this, eating that, and always being on-the-go!), and I am not always on my computer checking my email with everything I have going on! Sometimes I feel so rushed to participate in a spectacular online printing deal, and it’s so frustrating to be overwhelmed at such an already busy (and sometimes stressful) time of year!

The bottom line is that if I had some pre-made digital scrapbooking pages that were already ready-to-go, then when those wonderful sales showed up in my inbox, I could take full-advantage of them without feeling rushed, or without skipping the opportunity all-together!

So, that said, here is my New Year’s Resolution: I WILL SCRAP ONE DIGITAL SCRAPBOOKING PAGE PER MONTH (and more than one page if I have time… but I can at least scrap one page!) It doesn’t take much time to scrap one page. I usually take new digital photos every month, so it’s not like I don’t have new pictures that need to be scrapped! Not to mention, at the end of the month, last month’s digital scrapbooking supplies are often discounted; so I could buy them at a discounted rate and then scrap them each month. Another good reason to do one each month is so that I don’t have to wait until the busiest time of the year (the end of the year) to scrap all of my digital photos from a busy and eventful year! Scrapping one page per month will give me time to relax and enjoy the holidays, instead of procrastinating and waiting until the last month to scrap all of that year’s activities.

And last, but not least, by scrapping one page per month I can always take advantage of the fabulous discounts on gifts made from my scrapbooking pages at the end of the year, now that I will be prepared with plenty of great digitally scrapped projects!

And why not take a few, helpful short-cuts along the way! For example, I can get special monthly-themed Quick Pages, and just slip my photos into them in order to save a lot of time! Quick Pages are so easy to use, and help complete a project so quickly, that it will be a cinch to keep my New Year’s Resolution!
