The most meaningful baby albums, scrapbooks, and journals go beyond the details of birth weight and time-of-day to capture the true emotion behind the birth by using journaling and photos.

Many digital scrapbookers are combining journaling with digital scrapbooking.  It makes sense that journaling and digital scrapbooking are a natural fit!

You have your lovely scrapped page and then you add your precious photos so now it makes sense to include something said about the whole thing too!

However, even with the advent of a new child, we want to write more but our feelings, and experiences but don’t know where to start. So, see if these new Mother journaling prompts that might help!

New Mother’s Journaling Prompts:

• How did your pregnancy go? Special Memories?
• When did you learn about it sex? What did you feel?
• How did you select the name?
• How did you know you where in labor? What is your Labor story?
• Who went with you to the hospital? How did you feel.. calm, scared.. other??
• What do you remember about your surroundings at the time of the birth? What was happening and how did you feel?
• Describe the feeling when your baby was first placed in your arms? How did you baby look, smell, feel?
• Describe the feelings of seeing your baby in your spouse or partner’s arms for the first time? Where they calm, scared… how did that make you feel?
• Who came to see the baby? What special things do you remember they said or felt about your baby?
• What are other memories of your spouse or partner with the baby? Like when you were together with the baby for the first time your saw the baby or the first time you were alone with the baby?
• What was it like to take the baby home? Who was there to greet the baby? What feelings did you have?
• Any funny, or surprising story… like did you put the diapers on backwards the first time?
• Were there any feelings of fear about parenting? If so, why?
• What advice would you have liked to known and now would tell new mothers-to-be?
• Recall how you felt upon seeing the other members of your family with your young baby. In what special way did they each bond with the baby?
• What was the first song you sang to your baby?
• What was it like to put your baby in his/her room in their own crib? What did this room look like, what feelings did you want your baby to experience when they were in this room or crib?
• What do you hope for your baby? What are your dreams or values you wish for him/her?
• What was the first book you read to your baby? Why?
• What do you want to teach your baby?
• What message do you want your baby to have?
• When did you feel all was “OK”?
• In what way are you proud of yourself – as a new mother?
• What changes have you experienced, more organized, loving… etc.?
• Special rituals like Baptism? Circumcision? Naming the Baby? Other ceremonies, or traditions? How did you feel? How did others feel? Who came?
• How did your relationship with your own mother change? Was there a shift in perspective? How about changes towards your Grandmothers? Women in general?

These prompts can serve as inspiration to include writing into a digital scrapbooking page and they can also inspire photos and scrapbooking themes too!!!

Use these prompts with those special new baby and new mom photos that will coordinate with the journaling prompts too!

I would like to share a creative idea that a sister-in-law shared with me several years ago. As each child was born she made a special box for them. Each mother’s day she has a tradition that she writes each child a letter telling them what she thinks their special accomplishment of the year were, what special qualities they have developed and just all the reasons she thinks that they are special. On each Mother’s Day she takes a picture with each child, she then gives them the picture along with the note. After they have read the note they are asked to put the picture and note in their box for safe keeping. As the children have gotten older they have written their own special notes to include in the box about all the reasons their mother is special. I found this to be a touching way of keeping family treasures through pictures.

Another sister-in-law found that to her receiving gifts on Mother’s Day from her children was nice but not necessarily something that brought her happiness. She decided to invite her children to share a gift with her each year that was a gift of self talent. I marvel each year as I visit her home often, she always has new artwork of some type in the kitchen picture frames. I have seen paintings, dried flowers, poems and sketches. Each child has given their mother such beautiful, thoughtful gifts of themselves.

I also know of a mother that simply asked for no gifts from her children on Mother’s Day. She suggested that they write her a note telling her what new goal they had met during that year or what new talent they had developed. I love this idea! What a neat what to stay in touch with your grown children and to show interest in their developing abilities.

However you choose to celebrate and make Mother’s Day memorable, I hope that you will include pictures. Pictures bring immediate pleasure and memories to our minds. Journaling and digital scrapbooking is a natural combination! You have your lovely scrapped page and then you add your precious photos so now it makes sense to include something said about the whole thing too!

In fact some people say that scrapbooks without journaling are just pretty photo albums! We as scrapbookers might think there is a bit more to it than that. Still while it is true that “a picture is worth a thousand words”, in your scrapbooking projects, photos with WORDS can tell a more complete story! And for those that are sharing your scrapbooks they might also understand and enjoy them more if some WORDS where added to the pages.

However sometimes we want to write more, but don’t know where to start. So, here are some Mother’s Day journaling prompts that might help if you are journaling and scrapbooking your family Photos for mom! You can even have your children use some of these prompts and write on Grandmother!

Mother’s Day Prompts (Can be used for Grandmothers too!):

• My mom is great because…
• Mother’s day is…
• The top 2, 5, 10 things I love about my mom are…
• Write about a lesson you have learned from your mom
• What makes a good mother? Write about it.
• My mom always says…
• Finish this sentence in as many ways as you can think of: “My mother is a great mom because …”
• If I could choose, me and my mom would do these mother’s day activities together…
• Write about your funniest memory of your mother.
• Make a list of things you love about your mother.
• Imagine that you and your mom switched places and you suddenly became “Her for a Day.” What would it be like? How would you feel? How would your life be different? Write about it.
• Imagine writing stories about your mother.  Record your wildest, funniest, or happiest idea. If you can find photos to match your stories include them in your scrap page too!
• Create a scrapbook of Memories for your mom. Choose five or six favorite memories and write about them. Illustrate in scrapbook pages and combine to make an album.
• Write about the best piece of advice your mom ever gave you.
• My special mothers day message for my mom is…
• Keep a week-long “Mom Journal.” Observe your mom each day for a week, and record the many things she does both for you individually and for your family as a whole. Write them down. Then, take time to thank her for doing them. Add some photos and scrap the journal.
• Create a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting your mother and your grandmother (mom’s mother). Include photo of each of them. Send a copy to your mom and grandmother.
• Create a word web of adjectives that describe your mother.
• Find some mother’s day quotes and write about them and how they make you feel.

While these are only a few Mother’s Day prompts they might help you start writing and journaling more on your digital scrapbooking pages and projects. Take a look at them and see if they spark the creative writer in you!

Tea – a good tea party needs very good tea!

Treat your mom to teas she will love, and some she hasn’t ever tried. When people show up for a tea party it so fun to have a variety of teas to try. Start out with an Ice tea, serve a dinner tea and then change to desert tea! Set out milk, honey, and sugar – for fun maybe even color the sugar cubes in pastel colors!

Not sure where to get extra good tea?  Forget the grocery store! Try this online tea shop for amazing teas – Mighty Leaf Tea Company! These teas are of the highest quality and one of the best teas I have ever tried! The tea bags are not even made of paper but of silk like fabric bags! Often you will find this tea served at very high end places – and now, they can be served at your tea party too!

Make a special Mother’s Day Tea Party invitation – give one to your Mother, sisters, daughters, grandmothers, and special friends.

It is nice to have a special and personal invitation. They are very easy to make especially if you have the training and invitation templates!

Not too long ago, my mom hosted a tea party for some of her friends so that they could come over to her house and meet my little son, and she used the idea of including a tea party invitation in the body of her email. Her invitation turned out fantastic!

She used the Digital Scrapbooks and More’s  Valentine and Love Tea Digital Scrapbooking Kit 1 and  Valentine and Love Tea Digital Scrapbooking Kit 2  and made a beautiful e-invitation that she emailed to all her friends. She even put a picture of my son on top of a tea cup embellishment (which was included in one of digital scrap kits) and it looked as though my baby was sitting inside a tea cup! It was absolutely precious, a great way to get her friends’ attention, and made a wonderful-looking card… which was FREE because she sent it by email! Her friends could quickly RSVP, and the emailed invitation was still cute and personalized, while getting quick responses! (Ps. we have great scrapbooking page for Scrap Photo Album too!)

Next, plan your menu. I love to make menus that are easy but look elaborate. There are many ways to do this, from choosing simple recipes (that look pretty when completed!), baking/prepping ahead, or taking simple shortcuts. Just remember, tea parties should be as fun and relaxing as possible (even for the host!), so don’t stress yourself out over small stuff. And there’s no reason to be formal and stuffy about your tea parties! Take it easy and create “breakfast tea” with tasty breakfast scones, muffins, cakes, and fresh fruit with complimentary tasting teas, or throw an all-dessert tea party, with all kinds of cakes and sweet goodies! You may even want to put a pretty table cloth over a simple table and make the tea party “buffet style.” Let guests pick and choose what they want to eat and what teas their interested in tasting. This will save you time and will let you enjoy the party, instead of running back and forth to the kitchen to serve them the next course. Your friends won’t judge you for not having 6 different food courses, and will probably have so much fun at your relaxed tea party, that it could inspire them to throw one of their own the next time around!

Then make personalized name place cards and food labels. Use Digital Scrapbooks and More’s How to Make Place Cards (and More) using Photoshop Elements Training in order to assign special guests a seat. Add text to the name place card, then include a tea-inspired embellishment from Digital Scrapbooks and More’s Tea Party-inspired Digital Scrapbooking Kits on each side of the guests’ name.

Using a tea cup and tea pot digi-embellishment is an adorable way to add special details to the party and décor, that are fast and super-easy! You’ll also want to use the same training to make food place cards. Label each tea, what flavor it is and whether it has caffeine or not. You may want to provide both a caffeinated and decaffeinated tea option for your mother friends.

You should also label the tea-treats (and mention if you made any special varieties with individuals with food allergies, like myself! I eat gluten-free!) as well as any jams, creams, or sauces.

Labeling will not only look cute and organized, it will help your fellow-mothers know what is what!

Next, make your own traditions! One way to make the party a little more interesting, is to ask your guests to bring their own tea cup and saucer. It makes great conversation to look at different patterns and china, and can make the décor look more spontaneous and interesting too! Another fun idea? Send your favorite moms home with a tea party favor! Take a pretty, (very) small bag and fill it with a favorite loose-leaf tea. Close the bag with a pretty ribbon and close it with a small and inexpensive tea spoon as you knot the ribbon. It makes for a gorgeous little party favor that your guests will treasure. If you want to treat a special mother to a very special  part favor, buy an inexpensive, but pretty, set of tea cups. Send her home with a teacup filled with a favorite tea pouch to let her remember your pampering Mothers Day. She’ll love it!

Then, take pictures of tea time fun! Of all the important things at your tea party, don’t forget your camera! Snap some photos of the food, decor, friends and fun!

Make sure you get in a few of the pics too! Get a tripod ( there are plenty of small inexpensive tripods that work easily with digital cameras) and take pictures of everyone.

Make sure you take the Digi Makeover Digi Training to remove any red eye or shadows from your photos.

Also, scrap your Tea Party, make lovely digital scrapbooking pages, and albums to always remember your special Mother’s Day Tea Party!

One thing you could scrap is the recipes you used at the Tea Party and then turn it into a digital album and email it to everyone that attended the tea party!

Another thing to do is scrap the photos and turn them into beautiful albums!

You can go to an online printing company and have them printed out! Some place like Snapfish or Shutterfly. Here you can turn your precious digital scrap pages into printed versions that you can even make extra copies to give as Mother’s Day gift!

Also you can have these same pages turned into aprons, calendars, and mouse pads and other fantastic gifts!

Next, send thank you cards! Scrap a beautiful thank you card. Use Digital Scrapbooks and Mores training and tea party digi kits and include pictures from the party! It’s a lot of fun to reminisce about a relaxing tea party, and your special mom will friends love looking back at photos that remind them of the fabulous day they had on this Mother’s Day!

Treat your mom to teas she will love, and some she hasn’t ever tried. When people show up for a tea party it so fun to have a variety of teas to try. I recently went to a professional tea house for a tea party with my daughters and a few friends,  everyone at the tea party had their very own spot at the table with their name on a place card.

Have a very Happy Mother’s Day!

Why do I think Grandmothers or Grandfathers would like to develop a Digital Scrapbooking or Photo Editing Hobby? Well, I was surprised when I first started teaching “in-person” digital scrapbooking classes because most of my classes filled up with senior citizens. I guess I imagined my classes would bring in loads of new moms interested in digitally scrapping their babies and infants.

But lots of times mom’s are to busy, and grandmothers (or grandfathers) especially if they are retired can help preserve family history and also digitally scrap their grandchildren too!

As surprising as it was to me that my first classes filled up with more seniors than new moms, the seniors absolutely thrived with this new hobby!  Both men and women in that age group were interested in learning and did incredibly well. They even came into class as couples and wanted to learn about digital scrapbooking and photo editing together! It was wonderful and I really enjoyed teaching the classes.

I discovered that seniors came to the class because they wanted to know more about computers, in addition to learning a new hobby. They wanted to scrap all the digital photos that their children were emailing them of their grandchildren! They also wanted to scrap the personal photos of family, friends, places, and times that were very special. They wanted to preserve  the greater family history that only they could write and scrap about!

Also, they wanted to share their hobby with other family members too. When a grandparent has a hobby like digital scrapbooking it also connects them to the future, sharing scrapbooking with their children, grandchildren and friends. Some grandparents even teach digital scrapbooking to their grandchildren too!

Many seniors discover that they really enjoy digital scrapbooking and that it is a fun and exciting hobby for them once they get started.

Here are some tips that I learned while working with seniors that might be helpful if you are a senior and want to start this hobby, or if you want to give the gift of digital scrapbooking to a special senior in your life.

PS. These tips can help anyone new to digital scrapbooking- not just seniors!

Making it Easy to Learn Digital Scrapbooking in 3 Steps:

To get started in digital scrapbooking you need 3 things (besides a computer): a graphic computer program, like Photoshop or Photoshop Elements; you need training so that you know how to use these programs and digital scrapbooking techniques within them; and you need digital scrapbooking supplies to scrap with.

So, let’s take each of these items and break them down into manageable steps:

Step 1: Buy Graphic Software(Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Photoshop Elements) in order to begin digital scrapbooking. Here are some ideas to keep in mind when selecting graphic software:

• Pick a graphic program that has good features and a solid brand that won’t go out of business next year (a bad brand could mean losing all your scrapbooking pages!). Adobe’s Photoshop or Photoshop Elements are the leading graphic programs with a very good history of being a solid, reliable brand with lots of features perfect for digital scrapbookers. • If your senior is less familiar with computers, you might want to consider Photoshop Elements rather than Photoshop (see this article: Photoshop vs…….. Photoshop Elements. Photoshop Elements is a more user-friendly version of Photoshop and definitely more cost effective than Photoshop! Photoshop Elements is still a powerful graphic program and actually has several additional features for digital scrapbookers that Photoshop doesn’t even have! Plus, if your senior ever wants to upgrade to Photoshop, then learning Elements will help you more easily make the transition.
• Those that are newer to computers, like those that are only used to using email and a basic word processing program might want to consider getting Photoshop Elements 7 rather than the newer Photoshop Elements 8. Both programs are very similar, but Photoshop Elements 8 has a new feature that can make it frustrating to someone new to using computers and just learning digital scrapbooking. However, if your senior is comfortable with a computer, uses several different kinds of computer programs, and knows how or would feel comfortable using shortcut keys, then by all means, get them the latest version of Photoshop Elements 8  as it does have a few other new features that are nice to have. Both programs are about $75 and you can find  rebates that make the price closer to $50! See these deals: Photoshop Elements 7 or Photoshop Elements 8.

Step 2: Digital Scrapbook Training using Photoshop Elements or Photoshop.They will need training that not only teaches how to use Elements or Photoshop software, but also training that covers digital scrapbooking too.

Digital Scrapbooks and More’s Getting Started Series in Digital Scrapbooking for either Elements or Photoshop does exactly that!

This Training  assumes the person knows little about both the graphic program and digital scrapbooking, so it starts right at the beginning! This is perfect for the person new to graphics programs and digital scrapbooking!

This training comes with video tutorials that show you how to use both Photoshop Elements (or Photoshop) and do digital scrapbooking! The training also comes with Step-by-Step printable guides that shows many of the steps in the video to work at a slower pace and to use as a refresher – these guides come with pictures too!  Besides the Step by Step guides, it also includes Cheat Sheets with quick reference info on some of the key aspects of the lesson. Some of the individual lessons also come with bonus training and/or digital scrapbooking supplies! The whole series on CD version comes with everything including Lesson 1-6, and an extra bonus digital scrapbooking kit!

This training is available as a CD version or as individual downloadable lessons.

Help when Picking Training for Seniors:

• When working with seniors, many found it easier to have everything on a handy CD, instead of downloading and unzipping each lesson. You can buy the whole Getting Started in Digital Scrapbooking for:
  Photoshop Elements 8
  Photoshop Elements 7
  Photoshop CS3 or CS4
  (Just make sure your training matches your version of your graphic software!)
• However, if you senior is computer savvy, or if you can help them, you can buy each lesson as a downloadable training:
  Downloadable Lessons for Photoshop Elements 8
  Downloadable Lessons for Photoshop Elements 7
  Downloadable Lessons for Photoshop CS3 or CS4
• If you pick the downloadable training, then help your senior by downloading and unzipping it for them, or showing them how to do it. Here are some helpful information on downloading files (see video version) or unzipping files (see video version)
• Whether you pick the CD version or the Downloadable trainingyour senior’s computer will need to have the FREE Adobe Acrobat Reader on it. Installing the free reader will allow them to open and read the Step-by-Step guides and Cheat Sheets. Hot Tip: Check their computer and if they need the program or need to upgrade their graphic program, go to Adobe’s website to install the FREE Acrobat Reader.  Also, they will need the FREE QuickTime player so that they can play and watch the training’s video lessons. Get the player at Apple’s website.

Step 3: Buy Digital Scrapbooking Supplies.Next, your senior will need digital scrapbooking supplies, kits,  brushes, and more! You can get all of those things at Digital Scrapbooks and More’s Scrap Shop.
