Healthy Halloween Recipes for Fun!

I think that part of the fun of Halloween is the food! However, I not sure that candy and treats are the only thing that we have to eat to make it special and fun on Halloween. What do you think?

If you are like me and want to have a extra memorable Halloween but want the food to be fun and health (or at least some of it) then check out the ideas below!

Here are few other festive foods that are fun and good for you too! How about a Pumpkin Apple Soup, it is nice Halloween orange color that can set the mood for a Halloween lunch or dinner.

Now if you cook this dish in a black cast iron pot then can especially create a spooky festive mood for dinner too!

Tell your family that it is a witches bubbling brew, and you have got a meal that matches the Halloween theme! And of course scrapping the Recipe is a way to save the fun and keep the memories too!

When we make special family memories and then scrap them, we can preserves those memories to share later!

Don’t have a Cast Iron Pot, then how about a Halloween Pizza instead?

How about this simple Halloween recipe with pre-made crusts and pizza sauce from Woman’s Day

Spider Web Pizza
Ingredients:
1 pkg (10 oz) prebaked mini 8-in pizza crusts
1/3 cup pizza sauce
2 (1 oz each) mozzarella string cheese
3 large pitted black olives

Directions:
1.Heat oven to 450°F. Place crusts on a baking sheet; top with sauce. Pull cheese into thin strips; place on pizzas in the shape of a web.
2.Bake pizza for 8 to 10 minutes until cheese melts. Cool 3 minutes.
3.Cut off one end of 2 olives for spider heads. Halve remaining olives lengthwise. Use one half for body; cut remaining pieces into strips for legs. Assemble spider on each pizza.

Spider Pizza
Ingredients:
1 envelope. active dry yeast
1 c. warm water
1 t. sugar
1-1/2 t. salt
2 T. oil
2 c. all-purpose flour
28-oz. can crushed tomatoes
1 T. dried oregano
1 t. dried basil
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 c. shredded mozzarella cheese
6-oz. can whole black olives, drained

Dissolve yeast in very warm water, about 110 to 115 degrees; stir in sugar, salt and oil. Stir in flour; let rise for 30 to 40 minutes. Spread dough out on a greased 12″ pizza pan; set aside. Combine tomatoes, oregano, basil and garlic; spread over dough. Sprinkle with cheese; set aside. To make spider bodies, slice half the olives lengthwise; arrange on the sauce mixture. Cut remaining olives in 8 lengthwise slices; arrange 4 slices on each side of each half to make a spider with legs. Bake at 450 degrees for 20 minutes. Makes 4 servings

This month is October, and I know it is almost over, but it isn’t to late to keep up with my goal of capturing my sons’ senior year by making a scrap page for each month! I want to scrap an album of each month until he graduates then I will have all the digital scrap pages made for his Senior Year Scrap Album! I will have the scrap pages printed and bound into a lovely Scrap/photo album that I will give him for a graduation gift.

Maybe you would like to join me as I make a scrapbook page for every month of his Senior year, and scrap your senior or other special someone each month?! See the resources and scrap pages below for lots of ideas for scrapping digital pages this month! These ideas are good for just scrapbooking Halloween Scrapbooking pages too!

Bring on the Fun for Halloween and Digital Scrapbooking too!

Bring on the fun…..I couldn’t help myself. The other day as I visited my favorite grocery store I noticed the boxes and boxes of pumpkins just waiting to be chosen for some ones Halloween fun.

Even though I have kids that are getting older and one will even leave home this year, I just had to buy some pumpkins to carve into Jack’ O lanterns.

I also bought some apples and some caramel to make caramel apples. I figure if I bribe them with a yummy sweet treat that they might actually get involved in the pumpkin carving fun.

One of my favorite ways to make jack o lanterns is very fast, inexpensive and not messy at all. I buy colored foam sheets and pipe cleaners from the dollar store.

We make hair, eyes, noses, and mouths that are funny, scary, and very noticeable from the street. Because this is fast and easy it is a great way to have small children participate, but because older kids often are so busy and want to limit their time doing an activity like this, it is also perfect for them.

I am going to let my son include his girlfriend in this activity because I know that it will keep him around longer if she is here with us. I may even ask them to go to the dollar store and buy the supplies. This helps them feel like they have ownership in the project and I think they will have more fun with it that way.

For those of you who are doing a Senior Scrapbook along with me, this would make a great October scrap page. You may even want to have your Senior invite a group of kids over to carve pumpkins and make caramel apples, take lots of pictures and then do a page or two just around this activity. While I am at it I will scrap some of my other children too! Might as well scrap the whole family!

Here are some other ideas for fun when friends come over to participate in your Halloween activities, plus these are great ideas to photograph and scrap too!

It would be fun to have this group of kids make doughnuts and decorate them! Want more ideas? Then see this article: Making Halloween Doughnuts and Scrapping the Recipe!

And since it is fall, you might add photos of rake up leaves and jump into the piles.

If you don’t have leaves in your yard, have them go to a local park or better yet a neighbors and when they are done they can do some service for the neighbors and clean up the leaves for them.

Fun Halloween Photo Editing Tricks!

Halloween is a great time to get photos for digital scrapbooking, here are 3 tips to get better Halloween Photos!

Three Tips For Better Halloween Photos

It won’t be long until Halloween is here, so start getting prepared! If you’re excited to get camera-happy with those adorable little ghouls of yours this Halloween, then try these three digital photography quick-tips for super-spooky pics of your precious trick-or-treaters:

1. Play Before the Full Moon Comes Out. To capture the true, vibrant colors of special costumes and makeup within your Halloween photos, you may want to take pictures of your little trick-or-treaters before it becomes dark outside. Taking photos while the sun’s still up will ensure great photos and will offer additional pictures of your kids in their costumes if your digital camera’s flash or other settings are less than ideal when it becomes dark outside.

2. Take a Random Photo or Set a Funny or Spooky Scene.

If you come across a funny or spooky scene in your Halloween adventures, make sure and get the shot!

Use carved pumpkins, Halloween decorations, and holiday candy as props in the background of your exciting Halloween photos.

Ask your children to pretend as though they were ringing the doorbell at your own doorstep or pose with a favorite black cat for additional “action” trick-or-treating photo shots.

3. Use a Camera with Fast Shutter Option on Your Little Super Heroes. Costumes and candy can make for excited trick-or-treaters and blurry photos.

Lose the blur by either using a faster-shutter digital camera, or setting aside some special time before the holiday activities begin to take photos with a slower-shutter camera.

Remember: With slower shutter cameras, the kids and the photographer need to stay completely still for three seconds after clicking the button.

Long Distance Grandma: Send Halloween DVD for a Mailbox Surprise!

In efforts to stay close to my long distance grandson, I have started a series of blog articles called “Long Distance Grandma” This series was inspired because my only grandchild lives too far away to visit more than a couple of times a year, and I was try to find ways to say close him.

I thought if I wrote articles about how to stay close even when you lived far-away then I find ways to help me develop a relationship with my grandson even if he is miles away!!

Special Note: Now most the ideas in this blog will work if you are a long distance grandmother or even a closer one, also the ideas could be used even if you are a mother, and maybe a school teacher too! So even if you are not so far from the child you love – you can still make it special memories!

Today I am going to focus on Mailbox Surprise like Sending a Halloween DVD and Scrapping it too!

One idea that I have been thinking about is to send a Halloween DVD and scrapping about it too! I recently read these articles and they gave me the idea! Article: Halloween Movie Night and Scrapping the Spooky Fun! and article: Halloween Movie Night Treats and Dinner

These articles got the wheels turning on what type of movie might send to my grandson.

So here is what I did!

Step 1: I picked a DVD that was age appropriate for my grandchild.

This is my grandson’s 2nd Halloween, his first one he was quite small and probably doesn’t remember. He is only 18 months old, so I didn’t want him to be to scarred of everything so I sent a cute little video with all of his favorite characters singing and having fun with Halloween – called: Halloween Spooktacular/Trick or Treat Tales.

This DVD has Barney and other loveable friends in it, and this makes Halloween already a fun and happy experience. By the way after he watched it, My daughter tells me he loves this movie!

Now your grandchild my like a different video, so pick one that they would enjoy and mail that one to them. Put their name on the package so they know it is just for them!

Step 2: Sent a Halloween Surprise early in October

I mail this Halloween Surprise for my grandson so that it would arrive the first week in October, that way he would have lots of time to enjoy it, and I would have lots of time to get loads of great photos from my daughter!

At this age he won’t know who sent the video, however he might remember the video and if I scrap some photos of him watching it too!

Step 2: Scrapped the Photos

Next, I ask my daughter to take some photos of him watching the movie. My daughter is very happy to send the photos, she is busy and knows if she sends photos then I will digitally scrap them for her and often have the scrap pages printed into nice albums.

When the photos started coming in my email inbox from my daughter of my grandson enjoying his Halloween movie surprise that I had sent, then I started scrapping these digital photos.

I used Photoshop Elements to arrange the supplies and photos.

It was fun to scrap him and his Halloween movie that I sent him! I think that he will enjoy the movie now and enjoy the scrap pages later!

Being a grandma is so fun!

Step 3: Turn it into a Digital Album and Email to your Family!

Turn the scrap pages into a Digital Scrapbooking Book in PDF format and then email to family and friends. It is a fun way to show off your grandchild. Also, the grandchild will have a precious memory book too! And, it will save me money on printing, shipping boxes, and postage when I turn my digital scrapbooking Halloween page into a PDF album and email it to my grandson, and other friends and family.

These pages where easy and fast to make. Now I plan to send this to my family and friends (by email) this Halloween digital album with photos of my grandson. This makes it so easy and fast to share all of my treasured photos and digital scrapbooking pages with everyone!

I think this is one way I can stay close to those I love – even if I am far away!

Halloween Movie Night Treats and Dinner

If you have been following along you might have read the article Halloween Movie Night and Scrapping the Spooky Fun!

And if you did, and if you are planning a Halloween family movie night you might also want to make a night of it and add a Halloween treat or dinner too?!

You can use these ideas for not only a Halloween movie night, but also Halloween parties and other Halloween events too!

So why not make it a special evening to be remembered? Make a special Halloween treat or dinner to go with the Halloween movie!

Dinner and movie is always a hit and to make the movie, treat and dinner have the same theme makes it a big hit at home and creates great memories too!

Have the kids help you make the special holiday themed treat or dinner and then watch the show! Afterwards scrap all the special memories of making the treat or dinner and watching the show together too!

Make Halloween Treats to go with your Movie!

Sound good? But not sure what treats to make … well then you are in the right place! Here are a few ideas!

This is a very easy recipe, is made from Apple Cider and gummy worms! Creepy..but super fun for the little ones!

Another idea we like (from MarthaStewart.com) is turning a pumpkin into an ice cooler and put some sodas in.

This is a very easy idea and can turn a popular movie snack into an exciting and festive time! Just choose a large, wide pumpkin, cut off the top third with a serrated knife or keyhole saw, and scrape out the pulp and seeds. Line the gourd with a glass or plastic bowl to prevent it from becoming water-logged.

If the pumpkin opening is a bit too small for the bowl, carefully shave the inside edge with a spoon. Finish by filling the bowl with ice and bottled drinks.

Another fun treat you can use for your movie night or use for other Halloween parties is this Monster Munch from Family.com

Also you can use this treat and bring to the kids’ classroom parties, or to serve up at your own. Your little monsters will love this popcorn that’s coated with white chocolate and spiked with candy and salty peanuts and pretzels.

Making Halloween Doughnuts and Scrapping the Recipe!

Happy Fall, Happy October, and Happy Halloween!

Fall is my favorite season of the year. The leaves have now changed from lush green to oranges, yellows, reds, and browns here in my home state of Idaho. The air has gone from warm to chilly and the breeze is crisp in the morning and evening and though I love the warmth of the summer months, I really enjoy the feeling this change in the weather brings to me.

I imagine that many of the feeling that I have come from the SWEET memories that the month of October brings to me.

I have always enjoyed decorating, dressing up, and celebrating Halloween with my family members.

One particular memory that brings me so much joy is that every Halloween we would come home from school to the fresh smell of homemade doughnuts. My mother would let us drizzle them with frosting, dunk them in sugar and coat them with our favorite decorative candies. Then all of the neighborhood kids knew that they were welcome to come over to our home for doughnuts.

As a young mother I did not have the time to carry on this wonderful tradition, however, now that I have no children that are of the age that I need to dress them up and I have no school class parties to take charge of I am starting this tradition at my house this year!

My kids are all teens now and we have just moved into a new home. I am excited to invite my teens to have their friends come on over after school to help decorate and eat doughnuts.

I am also going to extend an invitation to my new neighbors to come on over with their kids for a special treat. What a great way to celebrate the end of a beautiful fall season together with friends and family.

It’s so easy to find doughnuts everywhere even at the grocery store, that many of us don’t consider try making them at home. But they are easy to make, and the flavor of homemade doughnuts is wonderful! Plus you can freeze the extra and enjoy them for a few more weeks after Halloween! I like scrapping the recipe and plan on giving it to all the people that come over to help decorate!

Now,what to do with the doughnut hole?!
How about making Eyeball treats with the leftover doughnut holes?!

These scary-good Halloween treats, are prepared and eaten on the same fork. They are easy to make: begin with a doughnut hole then dunked in white chocolate, decorate and eat!

See the fun recipe below!

Forked Doughnut Hole Halloween Eyeballs Recipe ~ from FamilyFun

Ingredients
2 (11-ounce) bags white chocolate chips
12 doughnut holes
Semisweet chocolate chips
Tube of red decorator frosting
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
Instructions

To coat a dozen doughnut holes, melt the white chocolate chips with the oil over low heat (and keep the chocolate warm while you work). With a fork, spear each doughnut hole and submerge it in the melted chocolate to coat it, then gently tap off any excess.
Stick a semisweet chocolate chip with its point cut off onto each doughnut hole, cut end first. Place the forks (handle side down) in a mug and allow the chocolate coating to harden.
Use a tube of red decorator frosting to add squiggly veins radiating out from the pupils.

I will scrap these recipes and give them out to the guests that visit us and help decorate too!Then I will turn them into a digital album and email a copy to my sister and nieces!

Digital recipe books or albums are great ways to send scrapped recipes to loved ones near and far! And a fun way to share the holidays too! Later I can add photos of us decorating the doughnuts together and other Halloween activities!

Oh yes, I will also have the Halloween candy out for the kids and my witch costume on. And…..I will have my camera in hand. Pictures, pictures, pictures. Halloween is a great time to get photos for digital scrapbooking, here are 3 tips to get better Halloween Photos!

2. Take a Random Photo or Set a Funny or Spooky Scene.

If you come across a funny or spooky scene in your Halloween adventures, make sure and get the shot!

Use carved pumpkins, Halloween decorations, and holiday candy as props in the background of your exciting Halloween photos.

Ask your children to pretend as though they were ringing the doorbell at your own doorstep or pose with a favorite black cat for additional “action” trick-or-treating photo shots.

3. Use a Camera with Fast Shutter Option on Your Little Super Heroes. Costumes and candy can make for excited trick-or-treaters and blurry photos.

Lose the blur by either using a faster-shutter digital camera, or setting aside some special time before the holiday activities begin to take photos with a slower-shutter camera.
