I packed up a Halloween surprise box and mailed it to him.

When my daughter sent me some photos, of him enjoying his Halloween surprise, he also had climbed into his box which made a very funny photo too!

It seemed that he was enjoying the surprises as much as the box they came in!

When my daughter emailed me more photos of him enjoying his Halloween surprise from his grandma, then I wanted to get busy and start scrapping the fun so he could always remember it too!

Take a look at my scrap pages:

I wanted to scrap a cover page for my scrapbook. So I pick some digital scrapbooking paper and an embellishment kit to start my project and scrapped a cover page.

I wanted to create a story about him receiving the box from the postman to his house and opening the Halloween surprise box to playing with the surprises!

So I scrapped how he opened the box and climbed in the box as he took out each surprise!

I thought it was so funny, and I added some thought bubbles with text to give the viewer the feel of what was going on in my little grandson’s head!

Next, I thought it would be fun to show him playing with some of the surprises I sent him.

I tried to scrap more of the photos of him enjoying the Halloween surprises I sent him

You can see that the Halloween box that I mailed had lots of non-candy surprises!

I tried to scrap a photo of the Halloween toy and him playing with it. I really like him hugging the little toy in the last photo too!

I like to send books to my grandson too, and this Halloween surprise had several fun books for toddlers

He really liked the books with pop-ups, and I think since the books where not spooky then he can get a feel for the fun of Halloween before the holiday starts1

Again, I like to put an image of the book so when he grows up he can remember what the book was.

Now I can combine all the scrap pages together and make a digital album.

This album is in PDF format and can be opened by anyone that has the FREE Adobe Acrobat Reader. Now I can email this album to my family so they can enjoy Jonathan’s cute photos too!

Later I will have these digital scrapbooking pages printed and bound for him to always remember his special Halloween, and to let him know that Grandma loves him and is trying to stay connected even if we are miles apart!

Anyway, I think it is fun to have a Halloween themed dinner on Halloween night or for a Halloween party and it seems extra fun to cook in a pot that look like a cauldron and then scrap and share the recipes with family and friends!

Top Secret to Halloween Cauldron Cooking!….ssh, don’t tell anyone!

Here is the secret.. start with a black cast iron pot (cauldron) and then cook any one pot meal like: soup, chicken, beef roasts, stews, jambalayas or casserole recipe!

Any of these things should work in this type of pot and magic happens when you just call it a bubbling Halloween Cauldron Recipe! What you say about it makes it special! But don’t tell!

So if you like just start out with a black cast iron pot, your recipe, cook it, photograph it and then scrap the recipes!

Cauldron Cooking for Halloween:

To get started here are a few recipes and Scrapbooking ideas!

Halloween Creamy Shrimp & Tomato Cauldron Chowder

Ingredients:
2 stalks celery, chopped (1 cup)
1 medium onion, chopped (1/2 cup)
1 Tbsp. olive oil
2 14.5 oz. cans diced tomatoes with basil, garlic, and oregano spice
8 oz. medium peeled cooked shrimp
1/2 cup whipping cream
1/2 cup water
Ground Black Pepper
Slivered fresh basil
Focaccia wedges or other bread

Directions:
In a large saucepan, or Cast Iron Cauldron pot; cook celery and onion in hot oil just until tender. Stir in tomatoes; heat through. Add shrimp, whipping cream, and water. Cook over medium heat just until hot. Season to taste with pepper.
Ladle chowder into bowls; top with basil Serve with focaccia wedges. Serves 4 (1-1/2-cup servings).

1 cup medium or hot salsa
6 medium round loaves dark rye bread or wheat grain bread, unsliced

DIRECTIONS:
Brown the ground beef in a soup pot, or cauldron: over medium high heat until no longer pink, about 5 to 7 minutes. Drain off fat. Add cheese soup and water and bring to a very gentle simmer. Add the cubed cheese, and stir until melted. Remove from heat.

Stir in beans and salsa and bring back to a simmer.
Evenly slice off tops of each loaf of bread, and reserve for later. Carefully hollow out center of each loaf leaving 1 1/2-inch shell. Spoon soup into hollowed out bread, allowing some to spill over top of bread cauldron as if bubbling, and replace top of the loaf.

Serve hot. For a creepier effect, use Halloween cookie cutters and cut out scary shapes from slices of American cheese.

Place on top of the individual bubbling soup bowl. You can also use different colored cheeses and create spiders, flies, and so forth, and place them on top of the soup.

The Pumpkin Patch for the Perfect Photo! by Cheri Barlow

Last weekend my husband and I went up in the country and picked our Halloween pumpkins from our favorite pumpkin patch which is at Bates Nut Farm.

I love going to this pumpkin patch that we use to take our children to when they were young. I have lots of fun photos of them picking their Halloween pumpkins right in the pumpkin field! It was fun to see so many families doing the same thing this weekend, and the digital cameras were snapping like crazy! Children and pumpkins everywhere!

Taking your children on a fun outing to get their Halloween pumpkins is so fun and a great time to get some wonderful photos for your digital scrapbooking projects too.

Two of my Favorite Pumpkin Patches – Check them out if you can! (And if you go there take lots of photos to remember the event!)

Bates  Nut Farm: This place reminds me of how Knott’s Berry Farm must have started out! It is an old fashion farm with lots of charm!

The photo to the left is a picture of this pumpkin patch I took last week! You can see how rustic and natural this pumpkin patch is!

Ps. here is a little trivia – the digital scrapbooking kit and digital frames at the bottom of this article were made from photos from the pumpkins found at Bates Nut Farm!

More Info: Bates Nut Farm is the premier pumpkin patch in San Diego but it doesn’t have to be Halloween for you, your children and your grandchildren to enjoy an exciting day. The 100-acre farm has a petting zoo, picnic tables,  and sometimes a tracker hay ride in a beautiful setting.  The market is full of mouthwatering foods from candies, homemade fudge and so many nuts.

Your children or grandchildren will get a kick out of the peanut butter machine as it whips fresh peanuts into creamy peanut butter right before their eyes.

There is also an enormous gift shop featuring home and garden items, stationery, jewelry, candles collectibles and so much more. Keep in mind that Bates is known for their seasonal activities so expect bigger crowds then. Check out their events calendar online.

My Next Favorite pumpkin patch!

Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Patch: I remember the first time I saw this pumpkin patch was when we were driving to San Francisco and we turned a bend to see a large pumpkin patch with fog everywhere! It was the spookiest and most beautiful sight at the same time! If you get a chance you should go – plus the pumpkins are really big there!

The coastal climate in Half Moon Bay, about 30 miles south of San Francisco, is perfect for pumpkins because they typically like warm daytime temperatures and cool nights. They also host the Annual Half Moon Bay Art and Pumpkin Festival and World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off contest. For example one winning pumpkin tipped the scales at more than 1,500 pounds!

Six Steps to Make a Digital Scrapbooking Paper!

Making digital scrapbooking paper out of candy corn is very easy! Here are the steps to doing it.

Step 1: Grab your digital camera, candy corn and get the paper background ready. Lay out the candy on one or two pieces of paper. Good colors for the paper background are yellow, orange, white, or black depending on the effect your would like. the candy will not fit perfectly together and some of the paper color will show through.

In this example I choose yellow so the background would blend in and be less noticeable. then start pouring your candy corn on the paper.

Step 2: Arrange the candy for the paper design. Dumping out the candy on the paper helps keep the random look, but smooth out candy by pressing it down on with your hands.

Fill in any of the open spaces with candy. If you see any candies that have defects – don’t necessarily throw them away! Sometimes the differences add character to your design!

Step 3: Take different shots of the candy!  Zoom in, zoom out, take the photo in different positions. When you have lots of photos to choose from you can pick the perfect one to make the digital paper!

Step 4: Load the images on your computer and bring the images into Photoshop or Photoshop Elements to edit.

In this example we brought our image into Photoshop Elements and we cropped and edited it until we had a digital scrapbooking paper that was – 11 x 8.5 (perfect for home printing!) and resolution at 300 ppi in case we want to send it to an outside professional printer too!

Step 5: Bring digital photos and other digital supplies in and make a digital scrapbooking page!

In this example I brought in some cute digital photos of a special trick-or-treaters eating candy, also I brought in other digital scrapbooking supplies and made a digital scrapbooking page.

Compared to a digital scrapbooking kits, the black custom brush kits don’t look that exciting,  however, in every brush kit is a magical scrapbooking tool just waiting to be released to work magic on your next digital scrapbooking project!

Custom Brushes Bring out the Magic in Digital Scrapbooking!

For example, the Halloween Witch Brush Set , (see the image on the left) is how a brush kit might look.

Usually, custom brushes are variations of black and gray colors only when you first get them. But when you use your brush the magic begins as you load your own colors into the brush. Like magic, the custom brush doesn’t have to be black anymore!

A favorite way that digital scrapbookers like using the custom brushes is to use them like how a traditional scrapbookers would use a rubber stamp; picking up the ink on the stamp and “stamping” ut on a paper.

Well, custom brushes can be used like this… only a digital-version of a rubber stamp!

Use Custom Brushes Like Rubber Stamps

Digital scrapbookers can use Photoshop Brushes to replicate a rubber stamp by loading a custom brush set into Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, choosing the brush like one from the Halloween Witch Brush set, picking a color, and “stamping” it onto the digital scrapbooking project.

For example, the image of the tag and the outline of the witch shoes is the actual brush tool moving away from the paper after “stamping”, and the image of the purple shoes on the tag is the “stamped” brush after is is applied to the tag! The black brush in the kit, now with color applied and “stamped,” makes the purple shoes! Also, picking other colors and brushes, we “stamped” a witches hat and broom too! See how attractive the Halloween brushes made this Halloween tag? It is fun to have improve a simple tag and put it onto a Halloween Scrap Project- like below:

Custom Brushes Contain Even More Magic When you Colorize Them!

By taking a brush from the Halloween Brush Set and colorizing them, you can turn them into embellishments to add to your digital Halloween scrapbooking pages!

By colorizing, I mean to take a black and white (or gray-toned) custom brush and apply different colors to different areas of the brushed image. Doing this makes a black and gray-toned “stamped” brush look more like a colored brush embellishment …which means it can look and act more like a digital embellishment (like, adding drop shadow), than a simple-looking “stamped” brush image.

It’s common for beginner digital scrapbookers to overlook custom brushes when they add digital accessories to their digital scrapbooking projects. Many beginner scrappers aren’t as familiar with custom brushes and don’t realize the potential of a good custom brush, especially when they’re choosing supplies filled with pretty, sparkly, eye-catching digital embellishments! But you can also turn your brushes into fancy embellishments if you simply colorize them!

Step 1: ”Stamp” the brush. I took this custom brush and applied it to a new document using black as the outline color within Photoshop Elements (you can also do this in Photoshop).  This brush is great because it was designed as an outline-brush… which is perfect for us to colorize in the following steps.

Step 2: Colorize your “stamped” brush!

Truthfully, a custom brush might look a little boring unless you decide to add a little color! Once you apply some color to your custom brush, it’s amazing how they can change right before your eyes and become so colorful and exciting!

Next, I applied different colors to the brush image. Adding a little color works wonders, and yes, because I did take a few extra steps to personalize the brush, I could color it in the way that I wanted it to be colored! Unlike pre-colored digital embellishments, I could color my brush embellishment in any colors I want! After seeing this change in the brush embellishment, brushes are starting to seem a lot more magical, aren’t they?!

Step 3: Add some effects- like a drop shadow.

Yes, if done correctly you can now add a drop shadow to your colorized brush embellishment. A drop shadow will make it appear more 3-D and less like a flat image.

Using the same custom brush set above (Halloween Brush Set), I selected the cat brush and “stamped” on a new document in Photoshop Elements (or Photoshop). I liked this brush set because it had lots of designs that were in outlines, perfect for a coloring page! After I “stamped” the Halloween cat brush out on my page, then I used my home printer to print it out. Just like magic, now I have a great coloring page to give to the kids!  Don’t forget the crayons!
