Throw the digital camera in your car, put it in your purse or pocket and get out and get Autumn photos.

Make some effort to use your good digital camera this Fall. Now that everyone has a camera in their cell phone to many people are relying solely on cell phones for getting their photos. Cell phone cameras can come in handy on occasion when you don’t have your good camera, but cell phone cameras are not going to get you the best photos. Usually the lens are minimal and they don’t produce the photos that are amazing! I like to think of a cell phone shot, as a camera to use when the option is you will not have the photo otherwise.

So our biggest Photography tip today is DON’T use your Cell Phone Camera for your nature photographs, family photos or other serious photos where you want the quality to be higher.

Now you have gotten your good digital camera out and want to improve those photos too! So, here are a few tips to guide you to better Autumn photography!

Now that Fall is here grab your digital camera and get out there and start taking photos!

Here are 6 photo tips to help you get the best photos this Fall

Tip 1: Take Fall Landscape or Outside Shots in Early morning or Late Afternoon. Outdoor or landscape photography work well from the early morning or late afternoon natural light. One Travel Photographer Susan McCartney says, “It’s best to photograph outdoors when your shadow is longer than you are.”

In the early morning, you might get some fog or mist that will provide a soft background with some long shadows. Morning can provide a great time to go out and take some wonderful Fall photos.

In the later afternoon or early evening the golden light just before sunset transforms not only leaves hanging on trees, but also the leaves that have fallen on the ground.

Tip 2: When taking photos in the middle of the day use backlighting to enhance the photos. When the sun is overhead, you can use backlighting to make leaves glow in your photographs.

For example, see in the example how the light showing through the leaves makes the colors bright and interesting.

Tip 3: Use a close up lens to get really close to the leaves. Go ahead, zoom in with your lens and then put the close up lens on to get even closer! This will give a better image if you want to turn it into a digital scrapbooking embellishment.

Tip 4: Vary the kind of day you take photos, take photos with different types of skies. Don’t always take photos on blue sky days, or don’t always take photos on cloudy days – vary the kind of days you take photos on for different effects. You can take a photo of the same leaf or tree with a different type of sky and have a totally different kind of photo!

Each type of lighting offers different opportunities. If it is a sunny day, you get the benefit of blue sky and strong light and shadow. However, when the sky is overcast or when clouds obscure the sun, you get the benefit of enhancing the colors of the leaves relative to the rest of the surroundings. Stormy skies can make subtle colors “pop.”

Tip 5: Start taking the photos as soon as the leaves in your area start to turn colors. When you see the leaves turn, start taking photos and then keep taking photos as long as you can. Then when the heavy frost comes along, or a big windy rainstorm, color can decrease in intensity, and the wind will rip the leaves from the branches. Don’t miss getting your precious photos by waiting to long before you start taking your Fall photos.

Tip 6: Don’t forget to take candid photos of people with Fall scenery. Fall can give you the opportunity for some great candid photos. Children playing leaves, and couples strolling down a lane with Autumn Trees in the background.

Use a telephoto zoom lens to shoot unobserved candid pictures from farther away. It is very nice to get up close and personal when taking good photos.

However, if you have a camera with a fixed lens then you would have to be so close to the people you are photographing that the shot might be influenced by you because you are now part of the action. Being further away lets the scene develop without people feeling self-conscious and often you can capture more intriguing intimate photos.

Follow the Fall Leaves and Scrap them too!

With cool Fall days, and extra chilly nights the Fall leaves are out and about. It is a perfect time to get the photos for Autumn scrapbooking projects!

It is always fun to photography fall leaves, but if it is too late for leaves in your area this year, take a note and make sure to see the colors next year!

As Fall approaches one of the wonders of nature is the leaves changing colors and making many spectacular shows of color here and there.

Everyone probably has a favorite place close to home that has some fun fall colors. I like to take the drive up a canyon near my home to see the yellow and orange leaves when the Fall hits Southern California …more like in December here in San Diego! But never the less, when those leaves turn color, I want to be there with my digital camera!

Sometimes it is fun to plan a trip to an area that has a dramatic fall color show.

According to Fine Living Travel here are 8 Great Fall Drives one must take. They are:

VERMONT: Route 5
WISCONSIN: Cranberry Highway
PENNSYLVANIA: Lehigh Valley
GEORGIA/NORTH CAROLINA: Great Smoky Mountains
TEXAS: Lost Maples State Park
UTAH: Guardsman Pass Scenic Backway
CALIFORNIA: Yosemite National Park
ARKANSAS/OKLAHOMA: Ouachita Mountains

These might be some places you could go to see some wonderful displays of fall foliage and dramatic color!

This is a great time of year to get beautiful pictures of scenery, so don’t forget your camera! Images so brilliant, that you might want to come home and frame them. Also it could be a great time to get some wonderful family photos – ones that you would want to digitally scrap and turn into family scrapbooking albums or gifts like a mouse pad or puzzle! And don’t forget that fall leaves make fantastic embellishments for digital scrapbooking projects so take lots of close-up leaf shots because the really make great digital scrapbooking embellishments!

Have a colorful fall and don’t forget to take time to look at the changing foliage and take a few photos while you are at it!

November, a Month of Gratitude for My Son’s Scrapbook Project

Perhaps you have been following my series of blog articles about making a Senior Scrapbooking Album for my son? (See the other articles below!)

It my goal of capturing my sons’ senior year by making a scrap page for each month! I want to scrap an album of each month until he graduates then I will have all the digital scrap pages made for his Senior Year Scrap Album! I will have the scrap pages printed and bound into a lovely Scrap/photo album that I will give him for a graduation gift.

Maybe you would like to join me as I make a scrapbook page for every month of his Senior year, and scrap your senior or other special someone each month?!

November, a Month of Gratitude for My Son’s Scrapbook Project:

November, the month of gratitude has arrived. I find myself in an all too quiet house reflecting on the memories of the past year, which by the way, has been anything but quiet. I have so many fun memories to think about. Many of which include my eighteen year old, senior in high school, son. So if you are following the scrapbook pages that I am making every month for my Senior, I have decided to make a scrapbook page for him to remind him of the things he is, or should be, grateful for this year as the theme for the November pages in my scrapbooking project.

Because this month is so hectic I will take a shortcut and use Quick Page kits these are scrapbooking pages that are already mostly scrapped all you have to do is add your photos, some text, and basically you are done.

I like this Fall Scrapbooking kit ( Fall Foliage Quick Page Digital Scrapbooking Kit 2) because it will fit with my scrapbooking project size 11×8.5” and I like the design too!

My son doesn’t know I am making a scrapbook for him as a gift. I can’t wait to surprise him with it and I get more and more excited every month as I create the pages. So to keep it a secret, I tell him when I take photos that they are for the blog! … well, they are … see the photos in this blog!!! But I don’t tell him I am also making a special surprise scrapbook of his senior year with the photos!

But this month is different, as I take pictures of him, he keeps giving me grief about it. “Oh, mom, another picture for the blog, please mom no, this is stupid.” So when I give him these pictures and he finds out why I was taking pictures of him, I’m sure we will get a good laugh out of it.

Some of the great pictures for this month will include various pictures of him with different family members. I will put some photos of him as a senior too.

Other pages I will make as soon as I can get the photos are of these things he loves and is grateful for like: the wrestling room at his school, it is his “Tera-Bithia” so to speak so I will include a picture of that. He truly enjoys that mountains that surround our area and goes as often as he can with his friends to spend a night out in the open air under the stars, so I will take a picture of the mountains. Of course, I want to include some pictures of his closest friends. I will also include a picture of the car he bought at the beginning of this year that now has been window painted by the cheerleaders in the school colors.

One scrap idea to make ordinary photos seem more Fall like; is to use some Fall brushes to decorate the photos too!

Just load a brush set into Photoshop or Photoshop Elements and “stamp” the brushes on the photos that I want to look more decorated!

Brushes are fun to use to make regular photos or scrapbooking pages more personalize and fun! See how I used them in the 2 photos below:

I am excited to scrap these and hope maybe you have some new ideas to use in scrapping your Senior, or someone you love and are grateful for……

It is Apple Time! Take Photos and Digitally Scrap them too!

Every end of September, through November I pick a weekend when the apples are ready, and take a trip to Julian, California. I like to go for the apples, the Fall photos and for some fun too! I love apple season and find it fun to visit a orchard, a fruit stand and some of the fun gift shops during this season.

Get out the camera, grab a apple basket and go to Julian (or your local apple orchard)!

One special activity to do in the Fall is apple picking, then bring home for apple baking the sweet and tart treat!

If you are in San Diego this Fall take a drive to Julian about 50 miles from San Diego city, but worth the drive; as the road meanders scenic country with cows and horses grazing in fields. By the time you get to the orchard you feel relaxed and probably have already got several inspiring photos already.

If you have a nice place to pick apples close to you then take a drive and get some apples for baking, and take time to enjoy fall while you take the time to get some good photos that you can use for digital scrapbooking too! Get the Perfect Pumpkin Photo For Fall

I just visited my daughter in Ohio, and while I was visiting her we took a trip to the Amish near her home.

During that day trip I saw some perfect places to take photos of pumpkins, like the image to the left!

The colors and a varieties of pumpkins amazing!!

I love to visit local places and get photos of pumpkins in the fall.

You can use them to make digital scrapbooking paper, or digital supplies, or just use the photos to enhance the scrapbooking projects!

The Pumpkin Patch for the Perfect Photo! by Cheri Barlow

Last weekend my husband and I went up in the country and picked our Halloween pumpkins from our favorite pumpkin patch which is at Bates Nut Farm.

I love going to this pumpkin patch that we use to take our children to when they were young. I have lots of fun photos of them picking their Halloween pumpkins right in the pumpkin field! It was fun to see so many families doing the same thing this weekend, and the digital cameras were snapping like crazy! Children and pumpkins everywhere!

Taking your children on a fun outing to get their Halloween pumpkins is so fun and a great time to get some wonderful photos for your digital scrapbooking projects too.

Two of my Favorite Pumpkin Patches – Check them out if you can! (And if you go there take lots of photos to remember the event!)

Bates Nut Farm: This place reminds me of how Knott’s Berry Farm must have started out! It is an old fashion farm with lots of charm!

The photo to the left is a picture of this pumpkin patch I took last week! You can see how rustic and natural this pumpkin patch is!

Ps. here is a little trivia – the digital scrapbooking kit and digital frames at the bottom of this article were made from photos from the pumpkins found at Bates Nut Farm!

More Info: Bates Nut Farm is the premier pumpkin patch in San Diego but it doesn’t have to be Halloween for you, your children and your grandchildren to enjoy an exciting day. My Next Favorite pumpkin patch!

Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Patch: I remember the first time I saw this pumpkin patch was when we were driving to San Francisco and we turned a bend to see a large pumpkin patch with fog everywhere! It was the spookiest and most beautiful sight at the same time! If you get a chance you should go – plus the pumpkins are really big there!

The coastal climate in Half Moon Bay, about 30 miles south of San Francisco, is perfect for pumpkins because they typically like warm daytime temperatures and cool nights. They also host the Annual Half Moon Bay Art and Pumpkin Festival and World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off contest. For example one winning pumpkin tipped the scales at more than 1,500 pounds!

This Fall Digitally Scrap Roasted Pumpkin Seeds for a Family Activity!

When I was young my mother had certain recipes she would have us help her with in the Fall.

I remember that we used to get all the seeds from our pumpkins and squash. We would clean them and roast them for a special treat. It was such a fun family tradition, and I still have warm memories whenever I see pumpkin seeds!

Start a New Family Tradition with Roasting Pumpkin Seeds

This Fall or Halloween when you are eating squash or carving your pumpkin don’t throw away the seeds! Gathering up the pumpkin seeds and roasting them is a nice family activity.

Here are a few roasting pumpkin seed basics to get you started on this fun family activity

Basic Pumpkin Seed Recipe

Rinse pumpkin seeds under cool water and pick out the pulp and strings. (This is easiest just after you’ve removed the seeds from the pumpkin, before the pulp has dried.)

Place the pumpkin seeds in a single layer on an oiled baking sheet, stirring to coat. If you prefer, omit the oil and coat with non-stick cooking spray.

Sprinkle with salt and bake at 325 degrees F until toasted, about 25 minutes, checking and stirring after 10 minutes.

Let cool and store in an air-tight container.
Or omit salt and toss seeds with any of the suggested seasonings below:

Hot Spice Pumpkin Seeds: Add 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce and 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon chili pepper.

Sweet Pumpkin Seeds: Add 1 tablespoon sugar, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and 1/8 teaspoon ground allspice.

Cheese Pumpkin Seeds: Add 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese and 1/2 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning.

Scrapbooking Ideas

Scrap Hint: Roasting pumpkin seeds can be a wonderful photo and scrapbooking opportunity.

Go to the pumpkin field and take photos of your child selecting the pumpkin or show your child picking the squash right from your garden!

Take pictures of your child scooping out the pumpkin or squash seeds. Take more photos of cleaning them and baking the seeds.

Take a photo of the completed carved pumpkin and then eating the special roasted pumpkin seeds.

Another scrap ideas is to make a special Fall or Halloween recipe Album! Include photos and recipes of your roasted pumpkin seeds, and your adventures getting the seeds and baking them!

You can even start a special Halloween Recipe book before Halloween and put photos the Recipes for Roasting Pumpkin Seeds in the digital scrap recipe book and email it to your family and friends early in the season so they can enjoy the fun too!

This year cook up your own special pumpkin seed recipe – you can use the basic recipe or get fancy with seasonings, then scrap it!

Fall is in the air! Which means family getting together! Fall means family dinners and Fall means lots of yummy Apple Pies and wonderful apple dishes!

Everyone probably has their favorite apple recipe too!

For example, my favorite apple pie recipe includes fresh apples, cranberries, brown sugar, spices and pecans! This is such a earthy yummy pie and makes everyone excited when they get a chance to eat it. It creates great memories as the house fills with the wonderful smell of the spices and apples cooking in the oven.

Fall is wonderful for apple baking because some of the best apples for baking are on the market. You might even want to pick your own apples off the tree for baking – see this blog about Start Planning for Apple Picking, A perfect time to Create Memories and Get Digital Scrap Photos!

Many bakers believe that a tart apple makes one of the best for baking.

Something tart, yet sweet and firm works very well in most apple recipes. My very favorite Fall apple for both eating and baking is the Jonathan Apple – both tart and sweet, middle of the road on firm and by far is a great hit in my apple pies! Usually the Jonathan apple only comes out in the Fall too – so you have to really watch for it’s appearance at your local store or farmers market or you will miss getting this apple!

Fall is so great as there really is so many ways to use apples too!

I am always on the look out for a good recipe! Or a unique way to use the fall apples! However, I am always losing my recipes after I use them! This year I want to make an Apple Scrap Recipe Book!

After I had gathered some basic apple recipes and several very interesting recipes, then I decided to scrap them and make a digital recipe book!

Depending on the area where you live, apples are in season from now through November.

Looking for those great fall photos, apple orchards and apple activities can make for a great family time, and give a wonderful opportunity photos for digital scrapbooking projects!

What says fall better than wandering through a lovely apple orchard with friends and family, picking apples, and taking precious autumn pictures?

Apple picking is a great opportunity to get fun photos for your digital scrapbooking pages, or capture some great shots of nature itself to turn into digital scrapbooking embellishments or supplies! If you missed the apple picking season in your area or you can’t get out to pick apples from a tree yourself, not to worry, you can still have a lot of fun by making a quick visit to your local farmers market.

Taking photos of selecting apples at the farmers market make for great photos! Something as simple as a bag of apples can make an interesting photo on a digital scrapbooking page.

Don’t forget that you can take some photos of your apples, family, and friends at home! The images don’t always have to be of whole apples either! Preparing apple-based recipes, baking apple pies, eating them, and so forth, are great apple-photo opportunities too!

I also like to have my apples pose for photos that I can turn into future digital scrapbooking supplies! I like to take photos of the apples in baskets, posing alone in the window, and the list goes on….

So, get out your camera and start taking photos of apples!

Once you have your digital pics, decide if you are going to use the photos for scrapping into a page or album or if you want to use the images to make digital scrapbooking supplies!

In this case, I think a digital scrapbooking page would be nice for my apple season photos!

I used the Gardening 2 Digital Scrapbooking Kit above to combine the Apple Photos and make a great fall digital scrapbooking page!

I also found a apple picking poem by Robert Frost that I used in my digital scrapbooking projects. I think it is nice to add poetry to digital scrapbooking projects when I can.
