Creating Memories of that White Christmas

We had a really big snow storm about six weeks ago that was just beautiful. By late afternoon all of the snow had melted in town and the streets were clear, but those big, white, fluffy flakes reminded me of all the pictures that I had taken the last two years of my kids playing in the snow.

I just had to take down the albums and browse through them. The kids have grown up so much lately that I hardly recognize the children in the pictures.

The memories are so vivid of them making snowmen, building snow forts, and getting into snowball fights. You can see the happy glow in their rosy cheeks as they warm up by drinking hot chocolate.

I’ve been waiting for the snow to come again. I want to get back out there and create some new memories. I haven’t been in the mood to put up Christmas decorations or go shopping yet in spite of the carols being sung on the radio.

So, patiently I have waited and waited for the snow to come to welcome in the season.

Yesterday it finally came. The big, white, fluffy, flakes that will enable us to have the White Christmas I’ve been dreaming of.

We put up the tree and even bought a few gifts and now it’s starting to seem like Christmas, all because of a little fluffy white stuff.

All of these photos and all these wonderful memories needed to be preserved into a wonderful Scrapbooking Album.

So, it was so exciting to look at Digital Scrapbooks and More’s Scrap Shop and see the new Winter kit “Let It Snow”.

This was just the kit that I needed to use to scrap all of those wonderful “snow” memories. The beautiful crystal like snowflakes and the frosty looking Alphas were the perfect embellishments for the pages I have created on the snowflake covered blue pages.

After I got done saving my older photos in beautiful digital scrapbooking pages that I would print out and give to family … I started thinking… Now it’s time to go out in the snow and start making some NEW memories….brrrrr!

Making a List and Checking it Twice, for Christmas Scrapbooking Ideas and Photos!

Why not plan to get some extra fun photos for digitally scrapping precious holiday memories this year!

Plan ahead, and jot down a few ideas to help you capture the most essential photos during this holiday season. Making a List and Checking it Twice, for Christmas Scrapbooking Ideas!

That’s right it is “OK” to write a list of some of the things you want photos of.

This list of ideas will help you make sure that you have all the important pictures for a memorable Digital Christmas Scrapbook or scrapbooking project.

List of Ideas to Capture and Scrap into an Album or Scrapbooking Project:

Take photos of Getting the Decorations out and Decorating the house inside and out. Don’t wait till the whole house is decorated to take photos! This year, start getting snapping those photos of getting the Holiday Lights and Decorations out of the attic, garage, or basement. Start scrapping the story at the beginning of decorating! Then take more photos as you string the lights on the eaves of the house, or putting up the garland and wreaths around your house. Take photos of the foyer, staircase, dining room or any other room you’ve decorated for the holidays and take the photos as you decorate and then the end product too. It is extra fun to see the whole decorating process goes from the beginning to end, especially if it is all scrapped and made into an album!

Extra Idea: Is there a special Christmas ornament that you love? Perhaps it has been passed down from your grandmother, or something you decorated with as a kid?

Make sure to photograph this nostalgic Christmas ornament, and use in your scrapbooking project! Maybe even journal about how this decoration came to mean so much to you!

Photograph Getting the Christmas Tree and then Decorating it too.
Does the whole family along has to go along in search for the perfect Christmas tree?

Do you go to the mountains and cut it down? Do you buy a live tree in a pot? Do a little journaling and scrap and photograph how your family goes about selecting your Christmas tree?

These things tell the story of your holiday traditions and are great Christmas scrapbooking ideas.
Snap photos of Trimming the Tree
Whether your tree is real or artificial, trimming the tree is a special event and a perfect way to get photos for scrapbooking pages.

Take pictures of the tree in various stages of being decorated. Include photos of the children hanging their favorite ornaments, putting on the star or angel on the top of the tree! Take lots of photos with everyone posing with the fully decorated and lit tree. This is a great time to use a tripod, and the auto-shot button on your camera and get a group photo, including YOU!
Christmas Visiting
Whether you’re traveling over the river and through the woods or warm and “toasty” at home, take the time to get pictures of everyone you’re celebrating with.

Photo Tip: Get a whole group photo and then photos in smaller groups: like the grandparents with the grandchildren; the grandparents with their own children; the Fathers and sons; the Mothers and daughters; three or more generations; a photo of each family, really the list goes on.Also, try to get some random photos of what people are doing – like playing games, enjoying the fireplace, visiting and so forth! Remember to include everyone’s name in your journaling and digital scrapbooking pages!
Photograph the Christmas Presents Received, wrapped and unwrapped!
Take photos of the presents under the tree not opened yet, and then as everyone is opening the presents.

Photograph the mess of gift wrap, strips of curly ribbons and crinkled tissue papers on the floor, the children playing with their toys, and finally the clean-up and empty tree!

Digital Scrapbooking Tip: Save the wrapping items and scan them use them to use as digital embellishments for your digital scrapbooking pages. These items will definitely be items of interest as they might match the photos too.
Scrap the Favorite Holiday Treats, Breakfast, Dinner, and the Recipes too! Photograph the Wonderful Tastes of Christmas! Include some of the recipes into the Christmas scrapbooking projects.
Get photos of mom baking in the kitchen and of course, includes the recipe. This might happen days before the holiday so capture the baking, preparing, eating and even the clean up!

Show the children enjoying the Holiday treats too! Get photos of the the special holiday breakfast, people helping to make it, your family enjoying it too!

Don’t forget to photograph the family dinner too! If you are too busy making and serving the food then assign a restless teen to be the photographer! This keeps them busy and you can give them a list of the photos they need to capture and this keeps them engaged in the holiday process too!
Scan the Letters to Santa
If you have children who write letters to Santa, scan them before mailing them so that they can be preserved in your digital scrapbook album.

You, your children will surely enjoy reading those letters together one day and they look great in the digital scrapbooking Holiday album too.

If Santa leaves the note behind, remember to scan it for the scrapbook album, turn it into a digital embellishment and add to the digital scrapbooking page.
Photograph the Christmas Family Tradition
Do you have the family tradition of of building gingerbread houses? If so then take a photo of that too!

We all have our own Christmas traditions such as going caroling, drinking hot cocoa on Christmas eve, or hosting the neighborhood party. Make sure to capture these special traditions with photos.

Then later, add some journaling to your digital scrapbooking project. Keep in mind that journaling is especially important when it comes to traditions. For example, write something one of the kid’s said as they opened a present, include your family’s cookie recipe or some of the words from a favorite Christmas carol can add a special touch to your digital scrapbooking project.

Christmas memories are some of our fondest, most heartwarming ones. So of course we want to preserve them in our digital scrapbook pages and albums.

Be sure to capture those precious Christmas memories, scrap them and journal them to keep these memories alive and in a way you can your family can enjoy for years to come!

Photo Tips for Holiday Photography and Digital Scrapbooking Projects -Part 3

If you have been following our blog then you know we have been talking about Photo Tips, so a few days ago we talked about 5 tips for better Holiday Photos –
(see ~ Photo Tips for Holiday Photography and Digital Scrapbooking Projects – Part 1 and Photo Tips for Holiday Photography and Digital Scrapbooking Projects -Part 2).

So in this article we will give a few more tips for getting those great photos for your digital scrapbooking projects from all your holiday events.

Many of the photo examples in this article will be photos of the winter holiday season, but these tips will work on any holiday ~ in fact, they are great for everyday photography too!

Just a reminder are starting this article where the last 2 articles – (Tip 1 through Tip 5) left off!

Tip 6: Look for the Reflections in the Holiday, and Capture both the image and the Reflection.

One the quickest and easiest ways to add an artistic touch to your holiday photos is to focus on capturing reflections in any place it might appear.

For example in San Diego in December they have a boat parade in December, it is fun to capture the boats decorated with lights but it is nice to make sure and capture the reflections of the lights in the water too!

More reflections in the water are extra fun with these light from the boat shining in the water. Then adding such photos make a extra fun digital scrapbooking page

This holiday season besides reflections in water, you can look for reflections in puddles in the street, or in ice, ice sculptures, or even in Ice sickles

Keep a look out for interesting splashes of color, reflected from Christmas lights and other holiday decorations too.

Reflections also are great in glass, mirrors, and other lights. Like these New Year glasses below filled with cheer and reflections. This photo could work great in a New Year’s digital scrapbooking project too!

Candles also are a great source of reflections, but really reflections can happen in many places so keep your eyes open for the that photo shot that has reflections in it!

Reflections can be somewhat focused like the images above or they can be somewhat out of focus, just capturing the reflections.

Tip 7: Capture Just the Reflection

The Holidays can be a perfect source of abstract images.

The out of focused or abstract photos that suggest the essence of the holidays without being direct and explicit, because the photo captures reflections.

With capturing the “Just the Reflections” your photos can create a great mood for your Digital Scrapbooking Pages and projects

Take a look around this holiday you might be surprised how many reflections you can find and how many creative photos you can capture!!!

Tip 7: Shoot Photo First, Ask Question Later! Take candid photos during the holidays. The posed photos are fun, but you can get some great photos if you take random, candid shots too!

Unlike posed portrait photos, with the candid photo, the photographer doesn’t get to direct the person being photographed. The real skill of a great candid photographer is being patient, watching, observing and really just waiting for the perfect moment when the person(s) and nature comes together for the perfect photo!

For example, taking candid shots of a child opening a gift – or playing with a gift for the first time. People having fun at a New Year party like the photos below.

To catch those very special candid shots by being alert and ready! When the photo op comes up, then you have to have your camera ready to fire off and catch the shot! If you think a good picture might be coming then start taking the photos and see if you can capture the event as it is happening and if you have a camera positioned, set up and ready then you should be able to get some treasured candid photos! A fast shutter speed can also be a helpful way to have your camera set up and ready to go too!

Exercise your powers of observations. Wait for the right moment and learn to anticipate what might happen, and then take the photo when it does happen!

It is fun to take the photos using these tips and make digital scrapbooking pages with them!

Photo Tips for Holiday Photography and Digital Scrapbooking Projects -Part 2

Yesterday we talked about 3 tips for better Holiday Photos – (see~ Photo Tips for Holiday Photography and Digital Scrapbooking Projects – Part 1).

Now we will give a few more tips for getting those great photos for your digital scrapbooking projects from all your holiday events.

At writing this article we are coming into Christmas time so many of the photo example will be photos of this season, but these tips will work on any holiday ~ in fact, they are great for everyday photography too!

We are starting this article where the other one left off – Tip 1 through Tip 3 left off!

Tip 4: Plan ahead ~ Charge Camera Batteries, Clear the Memory Cards, Get out the Tripod, Pick the places for the photos and Check the Lighting before you gather the gang.

After you have gathered everyone together then the last thing you want to have happen is to realize you forgot to charge the battery! This can make everyone grumpy before taking the family portrait or holiday photo!

In addition to making sure your batteries are charged (or you have replacements on hand), you will also want to make sure you have a place for your potential images to be recorded like outdoors in front of the decorated house, or indoors in front of the Christmas tree. Before you line people up take some test photos to check the lighting and see about how the place will look on film before gathering everyone! Also get your tripod set up and learn how to turn on the self-timer again before everyone shows up!

If you are shooting digital, clear your flash memory card so you will have room for the holiday shoots.

Tip 5: It is Ok to stage some photos. Go ahead and plan a photo think through all the detail and then set up the photo. It is defiantly OK to stage some of your holiday photos of people doing this or that. and putting them in the perfectly posed positions! Not all photos have to be candid.

When a photo is going to be used in a scrapbooking project then staging a few photos can make an extra nice photo for the scrapbooking page.

For example, go ahead and tell your children to look longingly at their presents under the tree! Put them just right in the photo with the surrounding elements – like in this photo by the trees, backs to the camera and feet showing!

Or pose Uncle John for a funny photo, like the one below.

Now, don’t pose all the photos but posing a few adds some special fun to many digital scrapbooking projects!

Another great place to stage the perfect photo is when you are taking photos of food!

Arrange the food in a perfect position, and add extra touches to the scene. Make sure the background is not distracting! Taking the extra time to set the stage for a good photo will pay off when you scrap it.

Photo Tips for Holiday Photography and Digital Scrapbooking Projects – Part 1

The holidays make for wonderful photo opportunities, which can later be scrapped into fantastic scrapbooking projects and pages. Today we will start giving a few photo tips for the holiday and then over the next while will be adding more… so, keep a watch on this blog for a bunch of great photos tips!

So let’s start off with some easy tips to help take better photos of Christmas, Hanukkah, or the other holidays. Try some of these tips and see if you don’t come away from the holidays with the absolute best photographs for your scrapbooking projects.

At writing this article we are coming into Christmas time so many of the photo example will be photos of this season, but these tips will work on any holiday — in fact, they are just good photo tips for everyday photography too!

Whether you are photographing the symbolic subjects of the holidays such as Christmas cookies, ornaments, or if you are photographing your friends and family, then getting creative with your composition with definitely improve your photos. This means paying special attention to how you organize the various elements in each photo. See the next few tips to help with this.

Tip 1: Move in Close. Especially when you center your subject subject in the photos.

This tips also works for off-center photos too, that we will talk about in Tip 2 & Tip 3.

While there are reasons to move out and take shots that show more of what is going on make sure you get some photos that move in close to the subject. When you go to scrapbooking your photos, you will appreciate that some of your photos are zoomed into the people or objects.

If you haven’t used this technique before then this is one thing that will make the big difference in the success of your picture-taking.

The simple fact is the audiences are always impressed when the subject is huge and impossible to miss. Therefore, make sure you have some of your photos where the subject fills the frame.

Tip 2: When taking some of the photos, off-center your main subject. Instead of every time placing your main subject in the center of the scene try moving your camera until this subject is off to the side.

This idea works with people and holiday objects too. Like Christmas ornament or Holiday food. These items as well as people are fun to scrap with, and using the off-center trick sometimes can turn up some interesting photos!

Photos that could make your digital scrapbooking page look awesome!

Tip 3: Main subject in-focus and off-centered, with the background elements blurred and in balance with the main subject.

Also, when you are trying the off-center tip, you might want to layout your shot to balance your main subject with something in the background, on the other side of the picture.

For example, if you are photographing a beautiful candle, try placing it on the right with the Christmas tree (or another supporting element in the background). Then adjust your camera to blur softly in the background on the left, yet leaving the candle (or other foreground object) in focus.

Using this technique can result in a photo that both records the candle in all its beauty and does so in an artistic, creative way.

Take a look at this same concept with another photo.

In this photo of holiday cooking the focus is on the candy for the gingerbread house and the other baking is in the background and blurred.

Also notice the off-center feature, with the balancing in the background supporting elements.

These images use the same concepts and have created very interesting photos that would be fun to scrap into many digital scrapbooking projects!

Try these tips to taking better photos as taking a good picture is still the best option for photo editing projects, and when we take a better photo this gives us more opportunities to create wonderful scrapbooking pages too.

However, even with our best efforts, sometimes is nice to know that we can fix our images for digital scrapbooking projects in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. Scrap a Calendar All About Me!

It all started last week when my children sparked a great idea for Christmas gifts, so I thought I would share.

I was bringing my son home from the end of the year Little League Football Party and I realized I had not sent my son with a gift for his sports coaches.

I asked him if any of the mom’s had collected money and bought a gift for the coaches.

He said one mom had made a calendar of the the coach, and the year of all the sports activities at the school!

This mom had given one of these special calendars to each coach, and had personalized it for each of them too! Adding their own photos to the calendar pages!

Well, I thought this was a great idea and gift. How special to have a personalized calendar as a holiday gift. The next year will be filled with special memories as each month comes and new photo is displayed!

As my family talked this great gift, I had to laugh when my eleven year old daughter spoke up and said “I want a calendar that is all about me!” My first thought was that she was so self centered but that thought left quickly when I realized that everyone deserves to be acknowledged and really, who doesn’t want a calendar that is all about them!

Making a Calendar for each Child lets me write there schedule down too!

This will simplify my life if I can get each of them to write their schedule on their calendar and then each week I can visit each of their rooms where their calendar will be hanging and transfer their schedule to my calendar.

I think my calendar will be more organized, less messy looking, and I will keep up with my family in a more efficient way. Plus, this makes the calendar sort of a diary or journal of events for each child too!

See other Ideas:

There are several different ideas for making the calendar, personalized for your special child or children.

For example, how about starting with photos of the year they were born and put baby pictures in January?

Then each month continue with other photos of them as young children until the last month has a photo of the age they are now.

More ideas:

Or just keep the whole calendar about using photos of them as a child, or some other period of time in their life.

Or pick photos of them last year and add them to each month of the calendar.

Another idea is to pick the activities they are involved in and put the pictures of the activities on the months they participate in. Like school dances, dates, or sports, spelling bees, and MORE!

Or make the calendar of them with friends.

You could also have calendar pages with your child and Grandma, or a favorite uncle or other special extended family.

Even more ideas:

You could do a special places page of their favorite hang outs. There are so many directions you could go with this “All about me theme.”

I am going to get started now.

This is going to be so much fun!

Tip 2: Take lots of photos of your Cookies.

Get photos of baking, frosting, putting in baskets on holiday plates and even photos of your family helping or eating them too!

Tip 3: Pick out your digital scrapbooking pages. Do you want to make a more traditional 12×12” scrapbooking page? Do you want to print it out using your home printer and use the 8.5×11” sized pages? Do you want to just make one page or do you want to make a whole recipe book?

Second, another solution for easy printing is to pick digital scrapbooking kits that have paper that works well with home printers like (8.5×11” or 11×8.5”) paper size. Using these digital papers makes it very easy to print out your recipe scrap page and include with your cookie plate very easy!

Like this Gingerbread People recipe scrapbooking page would be easy to print on my home printer, and I could put with the cookie gift plate. I used the Christmas Polka Dots Digital Scrapbooking Kit 2 because it has digital scrapbooking paper at 8.5×11” so I just put the photos a few embellishments and the recipe and I am ready to print out!

Now a good point to remember is that with some scrapbooking kits you can use the digital papers in either 8.5×11 direction, turn it and use it in 11×8.5” orientation for another great scrap page that is printable on a home printer. For example, this next scrapbooking cookie recipe page (Peppermint-Chocolate Sandwich Cookies) is from the same Christmas Polka Dots Digital Scrapbooking Kit 2 but the paper is turned in the landscape direction and then scrapped – both scrap recipe pages are easy to print out in a home printer and then you can quickly add the recipe page with your goodies when you give them to family and friends!
