History of July 4th of July Fireworks
Sometimes it is fun to know how things got started, to teach our children or even put some of that history on digital scrapbooking pages. So here are some information about fireworks from Celebrations.com:

Fireworks have been around for nearly 1,000 years and were first invented in China. They rolled explosives around bamboo and the noise was so loud the Chinese were convinced it could scare away evil spirits. Fireworks made their way to Europe sometime in the 13th century, probably carried back from the East by Crusaders. Their popularity grew, and by the 15th century they were widely used for religious festivals and public entertainment.

The earliest settlers brought their passion for fireworks to America. They used the explosives to celebrate holidays and impress the natives. Some generals even used fireworks to stage victory in battle and confuse the enemy. By the time of the American Revolution, fireworks were an integral part of American tradition in idealizing important events.

The first Independence Day fireworks display occurred in 1777, when Americans were still unsure if their freedom as a new nation would last. Every year since, fireworks have been set off on this day to show national pride and patriotism  ~ from Celebrations.com

Step 1: Get the recipes I want to use in the “Greeting Card/Recipe Book”. If you have photos even better!

Once I have the digital scrapbooking kit and supplies, you can combine them with your photos, your recipes, and other personalization!

Step 3: Scrap all of the digital scrapbooking recipe pages for the digital recipe album. It is easy to make digital scrapbooking pages for a recipe book using Photoshop.  I just bring into Photoshop, my digital photos, the digital scrapbooking papers, embellishments and type a few words to personalize and I am ready to make the next recipe page!

If you like you can use Photoshop Elements to do the same thing! If you are new to digital scrapbooking and would like to know more about Photoshop versus Photoshop Elements then see this article!

After I have made my digital scrapbooking recipe pages in either Photoshop or Photoshop Elements I can save them and turn them into a digital PDF album!

Step 4: Turn the scrap pages into a Digital Scrapbooking Recipe Book in PDF format and then email to family and friends.  It will save me money on printing, shipping boxes, and postage when I turn my digital scrapbooking recipe book into a PDF album and email it to friends and family.

Tip 1: Show up early for the fireworks event to get a good spot to photograph the fireworks.

Make sure the location you pick has a clear line of site. Check to see if the spot you have picked would be obstructed when people arriving late to view the fireworks might stand in front of your view. One idea – you might setup your equipment behind your blanket to help keep the view clear. Also, check other background features that might be in your photo.   Check your spot for street lights or other lights that will be on during the fireworks and will be in your photo. Remember that street lights might be seen in your photo as overexposed glares. This might make you want to change to another spot,  or just plan some post photo taking processing like in Photoshop to remove the glares. So if possible check you spot both during the day but also  at night for extra lights. However,  setting up in the daylight is easier than in the dark, so on the day of the fireworks, come early and set up. Things like leveling the camera, setting manual focus and getting the proper framing is difficult against a dark sky, so come during the day and set up your camera.  Get all of these tasks out of the way before night has come and you are in the dark.  Bring a flashlight just in case you need to do some last moment setting changes then you will have some light to see how to make the changes!

Tip 2: Use a Tripod. Make sure you pack a tripod for taking photographs of fireworks is a must. Ok this one is not a surprise, but just common photography sense – if your camera is not motionless during the  long exposures necessary for fireworks photography, the smooth paths of light the fireworks create will appear jagged. So when you first arrive, mount your camera on a tripod and carefully level it.

Tip 3: Use a Digital SLR Camera with a good lens, and adjust the settings. For best  results use a digital SLR Camera with probably a wide-angle lens, but the lens might depends on how close you are to the show.

Here are some basic guidelines but you will want to experiment to find out what works best with your camera and the spot you have chosen.

If you’re close to the fireworks display start off with a “normal” or wide-angle lens. Your position relative to the fireworks rocket bursts will determine the exact focal length. Some extra ideas on taking the shot – frame your image  so that it includes a part of the foreground in the bottom and if possible some “head-room” above the firework trails. You might need  a wide-angle setting for this. If, on the other hand, you are further away from this display you may need to use a longer focal length.  You might have to make some adjustments with lens and settings as you see the actual fireworks display – grab your flashlight and make the adjustments!

Also, when taking pictures of fireworks you will need to set your camera for a long exposure time. With an SLR (single lens reflex) camera this is usually easy. If you’re using a manual mode on your camera,  select a long exposure time by setting the shutter for 1 second. With auto exposure mode you may be able to select an even longer exposure such as 2 or 4 seconds. A good place to start is with a 4 second exposure at f8 with the camera set to ISO 100. The shutter has to stay open long enough to record the trails of each burst. You can also try exposures of 2 second and 8 seconds if you want less or more bursts captured. The brightness of the trails depends on the aperture and ISO setting, not on the length of the exposure. For very bright firework bursts, set from f/8 to f/11 which might give better results. With such long shutter speeds the use of a tripod is essential.

You might think that because the sky is so dark you need a wide aperture. Just the opposite is true – your image is not to record the dark sky except as background. You want to record the intensely bright streaks of colors in the fireworks as they burst across the sky. So if you use a wide open aperture during your time-exposure, you would probably overexpose the colors, resulting in lost of color.  To intensify the color in the fireworks,  use a smaller aperture like f/8, or f/11, or even f/16. Which you should use depends on your digital camera’s ISO setting, and the intensity of the color bursts.

Tip 4: When to Shoot the fireworks.

Here is the problem with photographing fireworks- you don’t know ahead of time how bright each burst will be, when it’s coming, or exactly where it will be in the sky! So when shooting fireworks, there is an element of luck in capturing the image.

If you wait until you see the fireworks burst into color, it will be over by the time you take the photo. So the key to photographing fireworks is to anticipate when the fireworks will be just right for the photo. Sometimes you can see the rocket trail going up and that can give you a clue when to open the shutter. Ideally you want to open the shutter just before the major display occurs. Open the shutter while the firework is on it’s way up, not when it explodes. Shoot lots of images. Some images will turn out! Others will not turn out. The more you shoot, the more chances you will have for good firework shots! With digital cameras taking lots of shots and throwing away photos you don’t like is not a problem!

Create Your Own Digital Scrapbooking Embellishments or Backgrounds using Our Flag!   ~   by Cheri Barlow

This 4th of July is a great opportunity to get great photos of flags because flags make great digital scrapbooking supplies for digital papers, digital frames, backgrounds, or embellishments.

So don’t let this 4th of July pass you by when our flag can be seen just about anywhere! Take some photos of flags that are waving in the wind, or a flag that is draped on a porch, or MORE!

When you start looking for flags, it is interesting how many different ways flags are displayed! You might be surprised at the different angels you can capture a flag, and all the countless ways that you can make wonderful digital scrapbooking layouts, backgrounds, and other supplies from your flag photos!

So where should you look for flags this holiday? You can fid them at a 4th of July parade,  hanging outside houses, in front yards, at businesses, displayed at the park, or even as part of other holiday celebrations.

Take lots of photos, trying to get some photos of the flag blowing in the wind (ripples always make great flag pics!), and then use your photos for your 4th of July digital scrapbooking projects as textured backgrounds or digital papers.

You may decide to snap dome pics that lay straight, that are not blowing in the wind, and are relatively flat as these flags are great to use for extracting and placing head shots of people in front of the flags for dramatic effect. Remember your favorite people don’t have to pose in front of the flag… you can add them later in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements!

One tip to remember when taking a photo of a flag is if you plan to separate the flag from the background, (to use it in other creations) that getting a flag against a blue sky makes it much easier to extract the flag from the sky within Photoshop or Elements.

To remove a flag from a blue-sky pic, just use the Magic Wand Tool, click on the blue sky, and it magically is selected! Next, click delete and you are left with just your flag!

Not that you can’t extract the flag from more detailed and busy photos (ie, photos with more than just sky) but having a plain (non-busy) contrasting background from the flag can make removing the flag much easier to do.

Once the flag is removed from the background, you can apply filters, change the opacity, or apply other artistic effects. Also, you can use the flag as a backdrop for placing photos of family and friends in front of your flag background, even if the person wasn’t in the original flag photo! Next, arrange each flag  and each person in a interesting way on your digital scrapbooking page.

For example, we took the flag that we extracted from our photo, and used it like a digital scrapbooking embellishment to give a stronger 4th of July-feel to our digital scrapbooking page!

So, this 4th of July be on the lookout for photos of  lots of flags and use them in your holiday projects!

Creative, Cost-Efficient Photo Ideas for Kids this 4th of July!

On the 4th of July you probably will have a cookout, go to the park, or catch a fireworks show! You will probably snap lots of nice photos today that you can use in future digital scrapbooking projects. But why should you be alone in having all the “digital fun”?!!  What I mean is, why not let the kids get involved in taking some of the 4th of July photos for your holiday digital scrapbooking projects?

Depending on your kids age, digital cameras might not be in the budget and totally out of the question. Especially if your kids are really young, they might drop a nice digital camera and damage it, or just, plain lose the camera! But perhaps instead of spending big bucks on nice, new digital cameras, try something a little more cost-efficient for little kids that want to join in on the photo-fun and take some holiday pics. Try getting the kids a disposable camera that you can buy at any local grocery or drug store! These cameras are not too expensive and if one gets lost or broken it is definitely not the end of the world.

Why give the kids a camera today?  Well, it is the 4th of July and as a parent, I’m sure you have lots to do to prepare for the holiday festivities! While the day still will be fun, you might be busy cooking and baking food for the cookout, packing for the picnic or fireworks show, and need an extra hand when it comes to taking the holiday photos! With summer here, and many kids out of school, they have plenty of free time to help you out and take a few pics! Not to mention, giving them the responsibility to be in charge of the disposable camera and getting lots of family and holiday shots will help them keep busy and stay away from being wild, crazy, and bored!

Here some 4th of July photo and kid ideas:

1. Get a holiday-themed, cost-efficient disposable camera. Around the holidays, you can usually find disposable cameras that are holiday-themed. If you find a disposable camera that is decorated for the 4th of July, you might want to get that one to add to the holiday-fun! Using a disposable camera that has the American flag can get kids excited about the holiday and about being in charge of taking special photos!

2. Make a list of 4th of July photo-ops that the child should look for. You know if you give a small child a camera and ask them to take photos without any instruction then 5 minutes later they will have used up the whole camera on silly things and will be bored again!  Take a few moments and prepare them for their “important responsibility” ! Make a list of photo-ops that they should look for, and spread these pics throughout the day, like: getting ready for the 4th of July BBQ, the actual Independence Day celebration, the fireworks show, etc (for younger children, you may need to draw pictures of the shots they should look for like flags, food, people – yes, stick figures are perfectly fine!) Also, you might want to add some hints or suggestions for the photos. This way they have to think about what they are looking for. You might explain that a good photographer really looks around and thinks about the photos before they take the picture. You may even want to offer some hints or suggestions that might help them look for good photos! For example, you might add to their list “Take 2 photos at the BBQ, or Cookout” then you might give them these a few hints, “Look for the yummiest looking dish of food at the BBQ buffet,” or ”Find something funny, like a person doing something crazy or a pet being cute!” Take a few minutes to create a photo-checklist and keep your kids busy, feeling special, and excited to play photographer!

3. Leave a few extra of the photos on the camera for “creativity shots.” Ask your children to find surprises and take photos of anything that interests them too! It will be exciting to see what “creativity shots” your kids can come up with, when they know they have a few “wild card” pics that are special and should be saved for something unique! I always think that it is nice to give children structure because it helps to fend off boredom and gives them purpose.  However, I do think that adding some room for them to pick their own photo surprises also helps them to develop their own creativity! I think creativity is as important as structure, it really is nice to have both – don’t you think?

4. After the celebration, help them to digitally scrap the photos into digital scrapbooking pages, albums, and projects.
