So in this article we will give a few more tips for getting those great photos for your digital scrapbooking projects from all your holiday events.

Many of the photo examples in this article will be photos of the winter holiday season, but these tips will work on any holiday ~ in fact, they are great for everyday photography too!

Just a reminder are starting this article where the last 2 articles – (Tip 1 through Tip 5) left off!

Tip 6: Look for the Reflections in the Holiday, and Capture both the image and the Reflection.

One the quickest and easiest ways to add an artistic touch to your holiday photos is to focus on capturing reflections in any place it might appear.

For example in San Diego in December they have a boat parade in December, it is fun to capture the boats decorated with lights but it is nice to make sure and capture the reflections of the lights in the water too!

More reflections in the water are extra fun with these light from the boat shining in the water. Then adding such photos make a extra fun digital scrapbooking page

This holiday season besides reflections in water, you can look for reflections in puddles in the street,  or in ice, ice sculptures, or even in Ice sickles

Keep a look out for interesting splashes of color, reflected from Christmas lights and other holiday decorations too.

Reflections also are great in glass, mirrors, and other lights. Like these New Year glasses below filled with cheer and reflections. This photo could work great in a New Year’s digital scrapbooking project too!

Candles also are a great source of reflections, but really reflections can happen in many places so keep your eyes open for the that photo shot that has reflections in it!

Reflections can be somewhat focused like the images above or they can be somewhat out of focus, just capturing the reflections.

Tip 7: Capture Just the Reflection

The Holidays can be a perfect source of abstract images.

The out of focused or abstract photos that suggest the essence of the holidays without being direct and explicit, because the photo captures reflections.

With capturing the “Just the Reflections” your photos can create a great mood for your Digital Scrapbooking Pages and projects

Take a look around this holiday you might be surprised how many reflections you can find and how many creative photos you can capture!!!

Tip 7: Shoot Photo First, Ask Question Later!  Take candid photos during the holidays. The posed photos are fun, but you can get some great photos if you take random, candid shots too!

Unlike posed portrait photos, with the candid photo, the photographer doesn’t get to direct the person being photographed. The real skill of a great candid photographer is being patient, watching, observing and really just waiting for the perfect moment when the person(s) and nature comes together for the perfect photo!

For example, taking candid shots of a child opening a gift – or playing with a gift for the first time. People having fun at a New Year party like the photos below.

To catch those very special candid shots by being alert and ready! When the photo op comes up, then you have to have your camera ready to fire off and catch the shot! If you think a good picture might be coming  then start taking the photos and see if you can capture the event as it is happening and if you have a camera positioned, set up and ready then you should be able to get some treasured candid photos! A fast shutter speed can also be a helpful way to have your camera set up and ready to go too!

Exercise your powers of observations. Wait for the right moment and learn to anticipate what might happen, and then take the photo when it does happen!

It is fun to take the photos using these tips and make digital scrapbooking pages with them!

Now we will give a few more tips for getting those great photos for your digital scrapbooking projects from all your holiday events.

At writing this article we are coming into Christmas time so many of the photo example will be photos of this season, but these tips will work on any holiday ~ in fact, they are great for everyday photography too!

We are starting this article where the other one left off – Tip 1 through Tip 3 left off!

Tip 4: Plan ahead ~ Charge Camera Batteries, Clear the Memory Cards, Get out the Tripod, Pick the places for the photos and Check the Lighting before you gather the gang.

After you have gathered everyone together then the last thing you want to have happen is to realize you forgot to charge the battery! This can make everyone grumpy before taking the family portrait or holiday photo!

In addition to making sure your batteries are charged (or you have replacements on hand), you will also want to make sure you have a place for your potential images to be recorded like outdoors in front of the decorated house, or indoors in front of the Christmas tree. Before you line people up take some test photos to check the lighting and see about how the place will look on film before gathering everyone! Also get your tripod set up and learn how to turn on the self-timer again before everyone shows up!

If you are shooting digital, clear your flash memory card so you will have room for the holiday shoots.

Tip 5: It is Ok to stage some photos. Go ahead and plan a photo think through all the detail and then set up the photo. It is defiantly OK to stage some of your holiday photos of people doing this or that. and putting them in the perfectly posed positions! Not all photos have to be candid.

When a photo is going to be used in a scrapbooking project then staging a few photos can make an extra nice photo for the scrapbooking page.

For example, go ahead and tell your children to look longingly at their presents under the tree! Put them just right in the photo with the surrounding elements – like in this photo by the trees, backs to the camera and feet showing!

Or pose Uncle John for a funny photo, like the one below.

Now, don’t pose all the photos but posing a few adds some special fun to many digital scrapbooking projects!

Another great place to stage the perfect photo is when you are taking photos of food!

Arrange the food in a perfect position, and add extra touches to the scene. Make sure the background is not distracting!  Taking the extra time to set the stage for a good photo will pay off when you scrap it.

So one day you get ambitious and pull out one of those boxes stored in the basement, attic or closet and start scanning some of those old photos.

It is so nice to have those precious photographs turned into digital images.

As for me, I just got a mobile scanner and this has made scanning so easy that I am scanning everything all the time.

So, I am not standing by my computer and scanner and putting one image in after another – BORING!

Scanning photos to make them digital photos allow the photos to be enjoyed in many more ways than traditional printed photographs, and when they are turned into a digital photo then it is easy to preserve those memories forever!

Also, with photos in a digital format it is easy to organize them, share them, backup them, retouch them, digitally scrap them, and to reprint them too!

After scanning I want to save and share my old photos with family and I want to digitally scrap some of them to enjoy in new ways too!

However, sometimes after scanning photos and before I share, scrap, or organize my scanned photos I need to fix them up a bit.

Fix those Scanned Photos NOW!

One thing that is good to know about scanned photos is that if you have a graphics program like Photoshop or Photoshop Elements it is easy to photo edit and fix my scanned photos before I  use them in digital scrapbooking, genealogy, print them, or even before I make a final back-up copy for family.

Scanned photos have special needs that other digital photos might not need. Here are 6 things you should do to your scanned photos before you start using or sharing them. So, after you scan a photo follow these steps in this order to go from a simple scanned image to a great scanned photo!

Step 1: Duplicate It! After all that scanning don’t ruin your original scanned photo by editing it and losing the original scan, make a duplicate copy to work on!

If you use the copy of the original scan then you can make all the edits you like and if you ever want to go back and start over you have the original! 

Also each year the technology to restore photos improves so if you have the original scan you can apply the newest technology at any time to the the original untouched scan! If you are using a graphics program like Photoshop or Photoshop Elements then you can manually duplicate the photo or have Photoshop or Elements automatically copy all your scanned photos in a certain folder and then put the new copied ones in another separate folder too!

Step 2:  Rotate It! After scanning a photo it may need to be rotated! Often scanned photos are saved in the wrong direction, this is not a big deal just use your graphic program to orientate the photo in the right direction.

Photos need to be rotated before using them in projects like genealogy.

Or rotated photo before you use them in a Digital Scrapbooking page.

Step 3: Straighten it!
Even after rotating a photo it might need to be straighten. Use the special tools in Photoshop or Elements to straighten the image.

Now the photo is straighter! Don’t worry about aligning it perfect in the scanner, just fix that afterward!

Step 4: Crop it!
After rotating and straightening the photo, next you might want to crop it. Sometime while scanning you pick up parts of extra photos or parts of the album, so to improve your scanned photo crop these unnecessary items out!

Now the photo is cropped you can use your precious photo in lots of ways! Digitally scrap it and even back it up and share it with other family members!

Step 5: Separate It! Save time and scan several photos together, now learn a quick way to separate them!

When you scan more than one photo, have your graphic program automatically separate them into individual photos! Imagine how much time this will save you!!!

Step 6: Fix it!
The scanned photo needs to be fixed, make basic photo editing fixes like — take out Red Eye, get rid of dust, clean up blemishes, and fix damaged photos!

Why not look have your photos look good when you use them in genealogy projects, digitally scrapbook pages, or when you make backup copies, and add to Facebook, MySpace,  Websites, or even just Email them! My newest adventure was a complete happy surprise to me. I couldn’t believe it when my daughter walked out of the garage with the cutest little puppy that I have ever seen. I had fallen in love with her when we went to look at her a few days earlier with my husband and three other children. However, I was very disappointed when we left without her and my husband was dead set against getting a dog.

So you can imagine my pleasure when our soon to be eleven year old girl received the surprise that surprised me. Her dad had gone and picked up the puppy, hid it at her grandpas house, and then had her go in the house to get something from grandpa. When she walked out with the puppy, I was in complete shock, but so happy that this cute little girl finally had a puppy.

As is common in our home, dad didn’t bring a camera. We did happen to have the video camera in the car and one of my sons grabbed it and started recording. But I wanted some still shots. So, I pulled out my cell phone and started snapping away. Though the pictures are not super clear, I am happy with them because I could still record the moment, I could email them to myself and scrap them later too.

I was a little nervous because I wanted to send these pictures to my parents and I knew that they would not look at their cell phone pictures. But if I could get it to their email then they could enjoy then too!

I have always enjoyed looking through my cell phone pictures but had never sent them onto my computer. I had just never needed to so I didn’t realize how easy it was.

Here is how to do that if you need help too!

On my phone I simply pull up pictures, my pictures, and then choose a photo that I want to send to any email. My phone resizes it to send. I then type in the email address I want to send it to and push send.

So simple, and yet I had never bothered to figure out how to do that! This opens a whole new world to me and I can record memories even if I don’t have my camera with me!

Now, your phone and email may be a little different than this but it probably isn’t that different.

I also realized as I sent my pictures of my new puppy to my parents, sister and some friends that I also had pictures of my son’s Prom night and pictures of my daughters Fifth Grade Graduation on my phone that I could email from my cell phone too!

All of these photos I quickly emailed to myself to save on my computer and digital scrap later! In fact, here is my scrap page I made from my cell phone photos!  Not to bad!!! I will be able to put these precious memories into the family scrap album – and I didn’t miss them!

Now I can email this scrap page to my family too!

The photos are better with a real camera, but in a pinch it is better to have the photo from a cell phone than not at all!

Have a great time taking spontaneous pictures on your cell phone and emailing to yourself to scrap or sending  them to your favorite non-texting friends and family too!

Making Digital Photos Look Vintage: Adding a White Border Trim

Remember when photos were developed and printed with a white bordered trim around the edges? Whether or not you do, we now have the luxury of going back in time and recreating those cool, old fashion-looking photographs! Learn this digital trick and give those modern Digital Photos a fun, Vintage-makeover!

Remember, Digital Scrapbooking Fans, we strongly recommend that you complete the Digital Scrapbooks and More Getting Started Series for Photoshop or Photoshop Element first, which will make you comfortable working with the software, as well as some of the techniques or tools we may review but don’t explain in detail.

Follow these simple instructions for making your Photos have a White Trim!

Step 1: Open up your graphic program like Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.

Then, In Photoshop OR Photoshop Elements, add a Digital Photo to a Digital Paper by using the “drag and drop” method.

Follow these Steps!

Step 2: Arrange the Digital Photo on your digital scrapbooking paper.

Size it to be about the size you want.

Step 3: Click on the Color Picker Chip at the Bottom of the Tool Bar

Select White as the Foreground Color

Step 4: Click once on the digital photo.

Photoshop Elements Users: Go to: Edit > Stroke (Outline) Selection
Photoshop Users: Go to: Edit > Stroke

Step 5: A pop up will appear In the Width Category, type: 55 px (#1) Click on the circle next to the Inside Option (#2) And click on the OK button (#3)

Step 6: You have now added a Vintage-looking White Trim Border Around your photo! Make the final adjustments to position and size.

BONUS TIP:
Duplicate your Photo to make it look like you have several photos rested on your Digital Scrapbooking Page too!

The final touch: Add a Drop Shadow to each Photo for a more realistic-effect.

Try this simple but fun way to make your photos have a white border around them!

If so then you might be thinking that you might want to scan those photos so you can use them in your digital scrapbooking projects, keep a backup or just have them turned into digital to preserve them.

Scanning photos is a great way to turn printed photos into digital images.

Many of us digital scrapbookers very interested in scanning old photos and turn them into digital versions so we can make digital scrapbooking pages with our photos.

So to help you get better scans use these tips:

Tip: Gently remove the photo from the album, and clean it off. Take you photo out of the album and remove the lint, dust, and smudges with a soft brush or lint-free wipe or clothe for photos.

Have you ever handled a photo and got fingerprints on it? This can be copied in the scanning process, so wearing white cotton gloves when handling photos will help keep skin oils from your photos and keep from having scanners fingerprints on the digital images.

Note: (gloves available at hardware or photography stores)

Tip: Remove smudges, lint or dust from the scanner glass and lid before you scan. The photo itself isn’t the only place that needs to be cleaned before scanning.

The scanner also needs a quick check and clean-up to make sure your scanning does get additional dusts, lint or smudges on images that are scanned that come from the scanner.

Use any cleaner safe for a camera lens by spraying it into a cloth and then wiping the surfaces clean.

Tip: Select the correct resolution for a clear digital image.

Scanner resolution is measured in dots per inch (DPI). More dots mean a sharper image. The resolution for a scanned photo for printing should be set between 200-300 dpi. The resolution for a photo that you want to use on the Web, or to email or for computer viewing (other examples: uploading to MySpace or Facebook) should be set between 72 -100 dpi.  If you only have time for one scan then scan for print quality as you can always change the resolution to lower quality in PSE — but not the other way — in other words,  low quality to high quality doesn’t work!!!!

Also, scanning the photo you might notice a few problems come up, so here is how you can take care of it.

Tip: The Image is too Dark. The photo looks too dark compared to the original photo. There is no detail in the shadow parts of the image. This might be caused by scanning with the wrong exposure or brightness settings. To fix this try re-scanning the image with the brightness or exposure settings with the slider towards the light end of the scale.  If your image still needs some help after that consider making some changes after scanning in Photoshop or Elements. Buy training on how to Removing Shadows and how to Lightening Digital Photos in Photoshop Elements.

Tip: Picture is too Bright, White or Faded. The image is too bright or faded out with white compared to the original photo. Again, this might be caused by scanning with the wrong exposure or brightness settings.

To fix this try re-scanning the image with the brightness or exposure settings with the slider towards the dark end of the scale.

If your image still needs some help after that consider making some changes after scanning in Photoshop or Elements.

Then, after you have scanned your photos – take some time to photo edit them in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, organize them, and make a CD back-up of all the photos you just scanned!

Oh yes, ….don’t forget to scrap all those old photos you just scanned too!

Here are some ideas to keep in mind so that you have a camera ready for that “perfect shot” or just so that you can prepare and have the right digital scrapbooking supplies on hand for making wonderful digital scrapbooking projects this month.

I like to take this list of possible scrapbooking themes and or photo ops, and plan my month of scrapbooking and photo taking adventures! So go ahead and print the list out and see if you can get a few photos that are on the list!

Look over some of these ideas and plan your photos and scrapbooking projects too. Also, take a look in your digital scrapbooking folders to see if you have the right scrapbooking supplies to go along with these photos.
