Make and send your child to school with a fun Groundhog Day joke!

Sometimes we want our children to know we are thinking of them and a love note isn’t the only way. How about a fun joke or a riddle instead of note?

However, don’t just jot something down, scrap it and make it extra fun and special! What a nice surprise for Groundhog Day!

Here’s how to do it! Plus, this article will also tell you about some Groundhog jokes to get you started below!

Step 1: Open up your Scrapbooking Program like Photoshop or Elements and Use a template and Scrap Several Jokes at once!

Add your scrapbooking papers to to make a background on your joke cards. My example below is scrapping my joke card in Photoshop Elements, and using this scrap kit ~ Groundhog Digital Scrapbooking Kit 2 Make several Joke cards at once!

Also, I am using the Place Card Template from this Training to make my joke cards. The easiest way to do this is by using a special template like the place card template that is the perfect size for making joke or riddle cards for lunch box surprises.

There are many ways to use the included place card template which can be used for jokes, riddles and brain teaser cards too!

Step 3: In Photoshop or Elements Scrap by adding Embellishments to your your Scrap Joke Cards

Start adding embellishments to joke cards, by making more than one at a time you can give out several leading up to the holiday or one for each of your children!

Step 3: Type the Joke (riddle, poem or brain teaser) into Photoshop or Photoshop Elements using the Text Tool to make it special.

Write the joke question on the front (see image above) of the scrapped card. With the answer in the inside!

For the answer either handwrite the answer inside or scrap answers on another template and turn your page over and print answer other side of the paper so it will be on the inside of the card

Bonus Idea: Make Personalized Joke Cards!
The great thing about scrapping your own customized joke cards is that you can customize the look, the saying, and even add a photo of your child and their name to the joke card!

Step 4: Print your joke cards, cut them, fold them. After you have created the perfect joke cards then print them out!

After they are printed, then cut each one out! Then fold them!

You can see that the Question is on the front of the card and the answer is in the inside of the card.

You can either print the page double sided or print two pages and cut and paste the answer inside – either way makes this fun and doesn’t give away the answer before your child has a chance to guess it!

Now you have a couple of jokes for a few days! Or you can put one into each of your children’s lunch boxes or put out along side a afternoon snack to celebrate Groundhog Day!

It will be such a nice surprise when they open their lunch box and find a fun joke or riddle!

Make Groundhog Cookies:

Have you been thinking about making Groundhog Day special with baking a groundhog cookie? How about baking, cookies, and then scrapping the recipe or even make a recipe books? Get recipes and digital scrapbooking ideas in this article!

So here is the official groundhog cookie recipe and below is a Gluten Free version.

Groundhog Cookies Recipe

2 cups sifted flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 cup soft butter
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup molasses
1 egg yolk
1 egg, slightly beaten
Currants or raisins

Sift together first seven ingredients. Set aside. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Blend in molasses and yolk. Stir in flour mixture and mix well. Form into a ball.Wrap in plastic wrap. Chill overnight, several nights or freeze. Place small amounts of dough on a sheet of plastic wrap, and cover with plastic wrap.

Roll 1/8 inch thick. Cut out cookies with lightly floured cutter.Place cookies on greased baking sheet. Brush with slightly beaten egg. Decorate with currants or raisin eyes. Repeat until all dough is used.Bake 8 to 10 minutes in a preheated 350-degree oven. Cool slightly before removing from cookie sheet. Makes 72 or more medium-sized groundhogs.

Just because you have an allergy doesn’t mean you should have to miss out on the fun! Try a gluten free version!

Here is a revised Gluten Free version I made:

Gluten Free Groundhog Cookies

2 cups mixed all purpose gluten free flour (If your GF flour mix does not have xanthan gum then add 1/2 tsp. to this recipe)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon gluten free baking powder
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 cup soft butter or non-dairy alternative, room temperature (e.g. Earth Balance Buttery Sticks)
1 cup sugar (Try Beet Sugar if Allergic to Cane Sugar)
1/2 cup 100% pure (or gluten free) molasses
1 egg yolk (or egg substitute like Ener-G EggReplacer)
1 egg, slightly beaten (or egg substitute like Ener-G EggReplacer)
Currants or raisins

Sift together first seven ingredients. Set aside. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Blend in molasses and yolk. Stir in flour mixture and mix well. Form into a ball. Wrap in plastic wrap. Now the holiday are coming to an end, you might want to have your child or your family send out personalized Thank You cards to those that gave you gifts!

Today if you look online you can find lots of great PDF Documents that can make fun digital scrapbooking supplies like a Thank You card!

Here is one way to make a Thank You Card using a FREE PDF document.

5 Steps to Scrapping PDF files:

Step 1: Go to the website that has the PDF document you want use in your scrapbooking project like scrapping a Thank You card, and save it to your computer.

If you are following along with this article go to FamilyFun.com’s Photo Thank You Frame and then save the document to your computer. Use the save button or go to File > Save

Save the document to a place on your computer that you can find easily.

Step 2: Next, open the PDF document in either Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. Note: the following steps will work basically the same in Photoshop or Elements even though the demonstration will be focused on how-to in Elements

Next a pop-up in Photoshop Elements will appear, click on the document icon, make and select the settings and click OK

If you are using Photoshop instead of Elements, then you will do the same thing, click on the document icon, make and select the settings and click OK

Step 3: Select the Thank You card with the Rectangular Marquee Tool. Because the PDF Documents has some extra writing on it, and we only want the Thank You card using the Rectangular Marquee Tool in this example can help us select only the Frame.

Also notice that when this PDF is in either Photoshop or Elements the white areas are now transparent!

Step 4: Make a New Document regular paper size 8.5×11” with a white background.

Next take the Thank You card is selected, then with the Move Tool drag and drop it on to new scrapbooking document. or

Now your scrapbooking project should look like this:

Step 5: Scrap It and Print It! Add your photo, text, then print the Thank You card in your home printer. Fold it and write your own text in the inside. Put in an envelope and mail to that luck person!

It is fun to learn about using PDF files, and Thank You cards are also a great idea for a quick and very simple card.

While this kind of card is cute, why not learn how to make better Thank You Card?

Sometimes we want to make even more personalized then just taking a premade PDF file. For example, we want to scrap a whole card, using our special scrapbooking paper and embellishments.

This is a very easy idea and can turn a popular movie snack into an exciting and festive time! Just choose a large, wide pumpkin, cut off the top third with a serrated knife or keyhole saw, and scrape out the pulp and seeds. Line the gourd with a glass or plastic bowl to prevent it from becoming water-logged.

If the pumpkin opening is a bit too small for the bowl, carefully shave the inside edge with a spoon. Finish by filling the bowl with ice and bottled drinks.

Do you have a High School Senior this year? I do. As I think about the past seventeen years, I realize that they have flown by.

So, I know that the next few months will not last as long as I want them to. However, I am determined to capture the memory of my sons’ senior year and make it a year that our family will remember forever.

Maybe you would like to join me as I make a scrapbook page for every month of his Senior year.

I have decided that instead of just buying him an expensive gift or giving him money for college that I would like to present him with a surprise for his graduation.

A photo album that captures the activities and excitement of each month of the year. I am starting with Aug. 2011.

This is the month that my son had his Senior pictures taken and also his 18^th birthday month.  Then I will continue to add photos and scrap them each month until I have a whole album to have printed and bound into an album.

I think that it will be fun to focus on his Senior pictures this month and then when he graduates in May I will take some more Senior pictures and compare any changes in stature, hair and so on. I can’t wait to make this idea a reality, but as you do, I hope that the months don’t go by too fast.

In September, I will scrap a page about his classes and friends and have more school shots so that he can remember these special memories of his Senior year.

I know that at the end of the school year I will all have a wonderful book full of memories to share with my graduate, and because I made it digitally, I can have several printed up too! One for me, one for him, and one for each of his grandparents! Then I will make a digital album and send to his friends and his Aunts and Uncles and other special family friends. Digital scrapbooking is wonderful because you scrap once and have some many ways to reuse the same scrap pages!

If you have a Senior this year, or child you want to scrap, then join me as I scrap one digital page per month! In the end we will have a wonderful album and preserved some special memories too!

When you start digitally scrapping your travels, or Vacation days. You might want to include some journaling from your children.

A scrapbooking page with some journaling can really make it an extra special treasure.

So why not get the kids involve in journaling about their travel, or vacation experiences?

First, if you and your children are headed out on a vacation you might want to give them a notebook to keep their thoughts in as you travel.

Then, these thoughts can be used later on in your digital scrapbooking pages. You can either scan the handwritten journaling notes and add them into the digital scrapbooking page, or you can take the journaling notes and type the text right into your scrap project.

Whether you scan your child’s handwritten notes or type the text into the scrapbooking project it will turn an ordinary scrap page into a extra special one!

So, encouraging kids to keep a travel journal or a travel diary along the way which will be used later for creating a family vacation scrapbook when you get home.

Here are some writing prompts you can give to your children and ask them to answer on their trip, or when they are looking at the photos afterwards … if you didn’t do it on the trip.

Did you listen to music on your trip? What? How did it make you feel?
What is the best thing that happened on your family vacation?
What is the worst thing that happened on your trip?
Write about your family and how they liked the trip, like who enjoyed what.
Write a story about your trip and illustrate it.

Also you might want to encourage your children write everything down in a notebook, adding drawings alone with writing, and also collecting mementoes along the way that you can scan when you get home, and turn into embellishments that you can add to your digital scrapbooking pages!

Also you might want to give your kids a digital camera to take pictures to illustrate some of the things they are writing about. Vacation Photos are an ideal way to illustrate your family vacation in your vacation scrapbook.

Tip: Print out these travel prompts we mentioned above, and then glue them to the front of your child kid travel notebook to help them look for things they might write about.

Also, games your youngster can enjoy at a party can really make for great photos too. Then scrapping these photos can be a real treasure as well as helping to save the memories. This can be a nice way for your child to look back on this birthday, especially if they were too young to remember it.

So plan now and get some fun party games for your youngster’s birthday party.

A few Party Game Ideas for Young Children:

• Birthday on Parade Make your own birthday party parade by giving children musical instruments – drums, shakers, horns, etc., line them up in a straight line and have them follow you around the house or yard playing their birthday instruments.
• Dancing
  Put on some lively music then dance! Young Children love to dance. Play music and let them freestyle dance.
• Freeze Dance Game
  Have everyone dance and when you call out “Freeze!” everyone must freeze in that position. Then say “Unfreeze” and have them dance again.
• Draw the child’s outline
  Get some poster paper, and have each child lay down and then trace them with a marker. Let each child take color crayons and color themselves. For really young children have parents help and don’t worry about staying in the lines!
• Bubble Games
  Keep young children busy with bubbles! Children love bubbles and to have their own bottle of bubbles usually makes a big hit! Blow bubbles and see if they can pop the bubbles before they hit the floor. Then see who can catch bubbles with their hands. If you have older children at the birthday party see if they can blow the biggest or smallest bubble.
• Treasure Hunt Games
  Take large plastic eggs and put candy or party favors in them, and hide eggs around the living room, backyard or park. Make sure the candy or favors are age-appropriate – you don’t want anyone to chock. Have the children hunt for the eggs. Each child can keep the eggs they find.
• The Hokey Pokey Game
  Children love to play this simple game. Here are the directions in case you’ve forgotten how play this old game for children’s parties. Have children stand in a circle. The leader begins the song and have everyone join in. Leader puts their right arm in the circle and sings “You put your right arm in … you take your right arm out … you put your right arm in and you shake it all about .. you do the hokey pokey and you turn yourself around and that’s what it’s all about! While singing the song put your right arm in the circle, take your right arm out, put your right arm in and then shake it up and down, then have your index fingers point to the sky while turning yourself in a circle, clap the last line of the song … That’s what it’s all about! Next try putting your leg in and take it out .. keep going till everyone has all their wiggles out.
• Have a Piñata
  Even if the children are to young to break it open. It looks great in the photos and on the scrapbooking pages! It can be used as a decoration if the children are to young to actually play! Or just have the older children select a younger child swing for them, once the piñata is open have the older child gather some goodies for the younger child too!

With a few of these ideas you should have loads of fun and have the chance to get lots of great photos that you can scrap later on!

Make a Lemonade Stand with Your Child This Summer!

Trying to find activities for your children this summer?

Then how about making a lemonade stand together?

This fun summer project can give you and your child some quality time together, and help your kids to feel independent by doing something to earn their own money.

Planning and running their own lemonade stand in the summer can be a good way for them to accomplish this goal, a great way for you teach them about running a small business, and a way to have fun together. Not to mention, a great chance to get some fantastic photos for your summer digital scrapbooking projects too!

Together with your children map out a plan for your lemonade stand, this shows them about how to plan a project and make a checklist.

Items you might want to include in your checklist for making the lemonade stand:

• A card table
• A paper or plastic tablecloth
• Folding chairs
• A banner
• A money box
• Decorations
• Tape
• Ingredient list
• Flyers
• Paper cups

Also, other things you might want to consider are picking a location in your neighborhood that you think will be profitable, and safe. Decide how much you will need to charge for the lemonade in order to make a profit. You may wish to make an Ingredient list for your customers in case someone asks what is in the lemonade, that way your child doesn’t have to remember but can refer them to the ingredient list.

You might wish to make a flyer that includes dates when you will be back again so customers can plan to stop by next time you are out with your lemonade.

Also, if you plan to sell other items like cookies, you will need to choose what kind, and a price, and ingredient lists for them as well.

Remember you can use your digital scrapbooking talents to design great flyers, ingredient lists and banners! This alone will put your lemonade stand above the rest! Next with your children make another checklist, this time of all the things you will need to make the lemonade.

Here are the things you will need to make basic lemonade:

• Fresh Lemons
• Ice
• Sugar
• Cold Water
• Pitcher
• Mixing Spoon
• A cooler

After making the list for the lemonade, you can help your children to get all of the items that are on the list. It is fun for a child to check each item off as you get it so that you can keep up with what you have and what you still need to get. You point out to your child that some of the items may all ready be things that you have around the house and that you should gather those first. Any other items that you don’t have, can be purchased from a store, and you and your children can plan a trip to pick up those items too.

Other Lemonade Stand Ideas:

Print out some fliers advertising the lemonade stand and hand them out to people in the neighborhood the day before you plan to be open. Let them know where and when you will be open for business.

This will help build interest in your lemonade stand even before you sell the first cup of lemonade!

It is easy to make the flyers in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements using scrapbooking supplies, and you might even encourage your child to help with the design and printing.

Also, you might sale a digital album of lemonade and cookie recipes that the customers could buy with their cups of lemonade. Say, for one or two dollars you would take down their email address and email them a digital recipe book of lemonade recipes! This would bring in extra money too! Have a printed out sample on hand for customers to look at when they are enjoying their cup of lemonade. This is a great time to teach your children to be courteous and friendly to the customers. Remind them that good manners is good business, and this will keep customers coming back for your lemonade day after day when they have a good experience. Without customers, there is no one to buy the lemonade, cookies and digital albums!

Planning and running a lemonade stand can be the place where your child starts to learn the great lives lessons, and you can help guide that too.

Remember to include your camera and get shots of planning, and setting up your lemonade stand. As well as serving your customers too!
