Digital Scrapbooking Pages used in PowerPoint Slides!

This past week at work I had a very busy schedule. I work at a grade school and I am in charge of scheduling and carrying out many of the after school activities as well as bringing in assemblies and programs from the community into the school.

As I went about my week I took a number of really great pictures of kids and other participants in these activities knowing that at the end of the year, I will be required to put together a project that displays what I have done during the year to promote literacy in the school.

I always look forward to putting this project together at the end of the year. I put the photos I take together into a PowerPoint presentation.

Here is my secret, for the backgrounds on the PowerPoint slides I use digital scrapbooking pages! It makes my presentation really impressive! Everyone thinks I am a genius, but really it is only using scrapbooking! First, after I get the photos, then I scrap the pages in Photoshop Elements!

It is an easy assignment for me because I have the advantage of using Digital Scrapbooks and More’s Digital Scrapbooking kits and Training to help me out.

Then I save the digital scrapbooking page in the JEPG format, and then just insert it into my PowerPoint presentation… yes, it really is that easy!

As I said, this past week was a busy one. I had three major projects going on in one week. One project was “Art Mom’s” . This is a new program to our school. It takes some major work but has so many “pay off’s” that it is well worth the work. I organize mom’s to create, put together, and teach an art class to 22 classrooms of children. This was a really great event to take pictures of. The children were so thrilled to have a “mom” in the classroom teaching. The art was terrific and the smiles on the kids faces were the biggest pay off. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

The next project I worked on was a celebration assembly for the kids for making AYP this year! Our school was in AYP trouble so this was a really big deal. AYP is the government standard that schools have to meet and if they don’t, consequences that are really negative may come to the school, so this was so important.

My contribution to the assembly was bringing in the Bengal Tiger Mascot “Benny” from ISU to cheer the kids on. It was wonderful. He came in and the kids cheered and clapped and had a great time giving him five as he went through the crowd of students. The kids then were presented with the reading program that ISU has set up for kids to earn free tickets to athletic events. Great program, great event!

The next event was an after school Family Math Night. We had games set up in every pod of classes, in the halls and library. We had candy in jars that were guessing games that were given away as door prizes. This went off without a hitch and we had around 250 participants. Families came and went all night and all of the kids had a great time showing off all of their math skills.

The pictures of all of these events were adorablele. It was also Red Ribbon Week so we had the kids dress differently every day in things such as backwards day and hat day themes. So at some of the events the kids had on fun hats etc.

I take pictures of these events that I am in charge of and then one event at a time I scrap them with the help of Digital Scrapbooks and More’s Digital Scrap Kits. When the time comes at the end of the year and I am asked to account for the programs I have produced during the school year, it is as easy as 1,2,3. It’s already complete!

One great way I use Digital Scrapbooks and More Digital Scrapbooking Supplies is by making a scrapbook page of each of these activities, I love to scrap these pages and then turning them into a PowerPoint slide with music to match the digital scrap page and photos.

It is wonderful! It is easy and I look amazing, with the scrapbooking pages added to the PowerPoint slides. It is something different from just using the basic PowerPoint backgrounds those most people use!

The State Department of Education in my state keeps these presentations to encourage other schools to create programs such as the ones I have created. So you know they love them too! They also share these presentations with other states, so just using scrapbooking page can make a nice impression.

Football and Digital Scrapbooking

I am determined to capture the memory of my sons’ senior year and make it a year that our family will remember forever. So I am scrapping a few images each month of his Senior year, and when he graduates I will have all the scrap pages printed and bound into a lovely album. Football and Digital Scrapbooking

Who can think about September without thinking about football? In our home football is something we eat drink and sleep. Not the NFL teams so much, but our hometown football team.

Our son is a Senior this year. He is a starter on our High School Football team that my husband happens to coach.

So this year I think it is a great idea to add a football page to his Senior scrapbook that I am making to surprise him at the end of the year. This will be the September section in the scrapbooking album.

I will add a few digital scrapbooking pages in this section of the album.

I think it would be fun to add some old photos that I scanned of him when he was a little boy dressing up and playing football and include his current photo too! See the info on the mobile scanner towards the bottom of this article!

He has always loved the sport! And I think he will enjoy seeing old photos in his special album along the new ones too!

As I scrap my September pages I am going to focus on his Senior football picture. I am so excited for this page. I may even add a picture of him in his letterman’s jacket.

I know that September is going to be one of my favorite months to scrap for him. With back to school Senior pictures and football photos as the first two or three pages in the album I can’t go wrong!

I think I will do some extra fun digital scrapping and use some sports brushes (Sports Custom Brush Set) in Elements to make my digital pages! See what my scrap page looks like after I have scrapped with some custom brushes. The Go Team is a custom brush too!

It also makes me so excited for what is to come in my digital scrapbooking adventure of scrapping a couple of pages for my son’s album.

Next month I am looking forward to the homecoming dance and Halloween activities.

Each month is going to go by so fast, however I refuse to let them just slip away as I am saving these precious memories by digital scrapbooking them.

So bring on the Senior activities and GO RAMS! (or whatever you favorite team may be).

Do You Have a High School Senior?

Do you have a High School Senior this year? I do. As I think about the past seventeen years, I realize that they have flown by.

So, I know that the next few months will not last as long as I want them to. However, I am determined to capture the memory of my sons’ senior year and make it a year that our family will remember forever.

Maybe you would like to join me as I make a scrapbook page for every month of his Senior year.

I have decided that instead of just buying him an expensive gift or giving him money for college that I would like to present him with a surprise for his graduation.

A photo album that captures the activities and excitement of each month of the year. I am starting with Aug. 2011.

This is the month that my son had his Senior pictures taken and also his 18^th birthday month. Then I will continue to add photos and scrap them each month until I have a whole album to have printed and bound into an album.

I think that it will be fun to focus on his Senior pictures this month and then when he graduates in May I will take some more Senior pictures and compare any changes in stature, hair and so on. I can’t wait to make this idea a reality, but as you do, I hope that the months don’t go by too fast.

In September, I will scrap a page about his classes and friends and have more school shots so that he can remember these special memories of his Senior year.

I know that at the end of the school year I will all have a wonderful book full of memories to share with my graduate, and because I made it digitally, I can have several printed up too! One for me, one for him, and one for each of his grandparents! Then I will make a digital album and send to his friends and his Aunts and Uncles and other special family friends. Digital scrapbooking is wonderful because you scrap once and have some many ways to reuse the same scrap pages!

Back to School Party Ideas!

How about starting this school year with a Back to School Party?!

This past couple of weeks has been a whirl wind for me and my family. Helping kids shop for school supplies and school clothes, the last visit to the water park this summer, and registration for school have kept us very busy.

So now that our kids are ready to start school and the stress of the preparations are winding down I decided that we would celebrate the end of summer and the start of a new school year.

One fun summer tradition that we have had for our younger kids is a back to school bash. What better way is there to prepare for the upcoming year than to invite friends that you haven’t seen since school last year and friends that you have spent time with during the summer. You can even scrap the invitations in Photoshop or Elements, and then print them out and mail them to everyone! The fun thing is that you can really personalize the invitations just as you like, and make them inexpensively too!

You can even scrap a thank you card that you can have your children send after the party.

And don’t forget if you want to save some trees and postage then email your scrapped invitation or thank you card too!

Plan the Back to School Party

Now once you have the invitations scrapped and sent plan the party! How about getting together for a picnic at the park and some fun games around the park. For this type of party I like to keep it simple. I have all the moms bring sack lunches for their kids, this makes it easy and gets everyone in the mood for back to school lunches!

I might even give the mom’s a new recipe and include it in the invitation telling them I will have samples for them to try at the party, and I might suggest that all of us mom’s come with a sack lunch recipe to share while the kids play and party. Then to top it off I bring some kind of special treat like a back to school school bus cake!

Add some games to your Back to School Party

Make the party have some of the play ground games to get everyone in the mood for back to school. Play simple games on the baseball fields or games like Red Light, Green Light. It is a great time watching the kids interact after several months of not seeing each other much of each other. All of this interaction will make it more comfortable for them with they see everyone back in class in a few days. Here is directions to a Game called Hose Head if you are trying to think of something new. Or perhaps you would like to try this game – Frisbee Golf

For the older kids we usually have a barbecue in our backyard. We tell everyone to spread the word to come have hamburgers and hotdogs at our house and then the kids go to a park close by and play Ultimate Frisbee or go Ice Blocking. Again, the excitement level of these kids is fun to watch as their anticipation of going back to school builds.

Special Note: For all of you grandmothers out there I’d like to share this idea. Have your grandkids come over the Sunday night before school starts and give them whatever it is that they love best from your home whether it be your Sunday roast or your homemade cookies. Then have them play simple homemade games like pin the nose on the teacher or Heads Up Seven Up. Then Have them pick a cut out paper apple or pencil from a pile and have a list of prizes on the paper such as a pencil, eraser, crayons, glue stick, and a notebook. This is inexpensive especially if you have watched for sales but the pay back will be priceless.

Plus, a lot of grandmothers (and even some grandfathers) are taking on the job of digital scrapbooking family events. Sometimes grandparents have a little more time and scrapping the family memories keeps them connected and saves precious memories that might be forgotten otherwise!

Make Homemade Cinnamon Rolls for Back to School Breakfasts

Mmmmm…The fresh, warm smell of cinnamon rolls is filling my house tonight. I can’t wait for my husband to come home and have one. If there is one thing that man can’t resist it is a homemade cinnamon roll.

My daughter and her friends came home from a neighborhood activity today with a new recipe for rolls. They begged me to let them make them.

After not much thought at all I jumped aboard but suggested that we make cinnamon rolls out of the bread dough.

They thought that was a great idea and soon we got started.

The dough was quickly made and they were covered in flour but it was a much smaller mess than I thought it would be.

We added all the ingredients and mixed the dough. See the recipe below!

I gave each of the girls a section of the dough and I took one myself.

I showed them how to roll out the dough and put the butter and cinnamon on.

The fun part was cutting the cinnamon rolls.

I taught them a fun trick that I learned years ago. You use a piece of thread to cut the rolls.

Slip the thread under the roll of dough and wrap the thread around and then squeeze it through the dough to make a perfect cut.

The finished result was beautiful. All of the girls had their own style or shape and size of cinnamon rolls but they all were so yummy.

The girls were happy with the results of their efforts and enjoyed eating one or two of them!

At end of it all each my daughters friends took a pan of at least a dozen home with them. Everyone was delighted!

Make ahead Homemade Cinnamon Rolls for Back to School Breakfasts!

School is also starting up soon and so I thought I would share this idea with you. This dough can be made into rolls, bread or homemade pizza pockets that you could send to school with your kids in their lunches!

Just let your imagination help you make health, tasty lunches that the kids will be crazy about.

Also, there is nothing better than a fresh, homemade cinnamon roll for breakfast!

So let the kids get busy when they complain to you that they are bored these last few days before school starts. Have them make their 1^st day of school breakfasts.

This recipe freezes really well, so don’t be afraid to make a large batch and freeze a couple dozen for those mornings when you need to grab something really quick for breakfast!!

Also, I think I will scrap them and turn the pages into digital scrapbooking pages. I think I will have them made into leather bound album for Christmas presents this winter. I can send my scrapbooking pages to an online printer that can easily do that!

But, until then I think I will take the digital scrapbooking pages and turn them into a digital album (PDF format) and email to my sister, and few friends.

I am sure they will love to have this recipe too! And when I email them the recipe they can just print it out on their home computer, or I know my sister will put it on your Apple I pad to read there! She is keeping all her recipes digital these days!!! So she will love it in the digital version!

Denise Bell’s Dinner Rolls and Cinnamon Roll Recipe

Ingredients:
5 Cups Hot Water
8 Tsp. Yeast (I use instant and put it right in the flour)
1 Cup Sugar
1 Cup Oil
½ Tsp. Salt
4 eggs
14-16 Cups flour

Directions:
Mix all ingredients. Place in a greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap, allow to raise until doubled, about 1 hour. Form into rolls and place on baking sheet; cover with plastic wrap. Allow to raise until doubled, 30 to 45 min. Bake at 375 for 18 to 20 min.

For cinnamon rolls: Roll dough out in a rectangle. Cover with softened butter and sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar. Add nuts if desired. Roll up starting with small end of dough. Cut with dental floss or thread into 1 inch slices. Lay rolls onto a greased baking sheet. Cover and let raise a second time. Bake 375 for 18-20 minutes.

Icing Recipe

Instructions:
1 8 oz pkg Cream Cheese Mix together to make soft icing.
1 Cube Butter Spread onto rolls while they are
1 pkg Powdered Sugar still warm.
1 Tbls Vanilla

Directions:
Mix together to make soft icing. Spread onto rolls while they are still warm.

Add some fun to school lunches by including a joke in your kids school lunch box!

Sometimes we want our children to know we are thinking of them and a love note isn’t the only way.

How about a fun joke or a riddle?

However, don’t just jot something down, scrap it and make it extra fun and special!

Here are some steps to make fun joke card to include in your child’s lunch box.

Step 1: Find a good joke, riddle or brain teaser! Before you can make a special personalized scrapped joke (riddle or brain teaser) card for your child’s lunch, you first have to have a good joke!

However, if you don’t have that many good jokes in your head, then here are some resources.

Here are a couple of resources for finding a good joke, riddle or brain teaser

Step 2: Write down the Joke (riddle or brain teaser) into Photoshop or Photoshop Elements using the Text Tool, and then start scrapping it to make it special.

Don’t just scribble the joke on a piece of paper! Even just a typed joke is boring! Take your lunch box jokes to the next step by digital scrapping it!

Step 3: Use a template and Scrap Several Jokes at once!

Make several joke cards at a time, or one for each of your children! Add digital scrapbooking paper, embellishments, and text.

Write the joke question on the front (see image above) of the scrapped card and the answer inside the card (see image below) .

The easiest way to do this is by using a special template like the place card template that is the perfect size for making joke or riddle cards for lunch box surprises.

Make Personalized Joke Cards!

The great thing about making your own customized joke cards is that you can customize the look, the saying, and even add a photo of your child and their name to the joke card!

Step 4: Print your joke cards, cut them, fold them. After you have created the perfect joke cards then print them out!

After they are printed, then cut each one out!

Then fold them! You can see that the Question is on the front of the card and the answer is in the inside of the card.

You can either print the page double sided or print two pages and cut and paste the answer inside – either way makes this fun and doesn’t give away the answer before your child has a chance to guess it!

Now you have a couple of jokes for a few days! Or you can put one into each of your children’s lunch boxes

Step 5: Add your joke card to your child’s school lunch!

Now the joke, riddle and brain teaser cards are ready to put into your child’s lunch box! Pick the perfect one and include it with a great school lunch! It will be such a nice surprise when they open their lunch box and find a fun joke or riddle!

When my kids were younger I tried to have some interesting after school snacks available to them so they would be excited to get home and tell me all about their day.

If you have been thinking about it too, then here are some ideas:

First, have a fun snack. If you have the same old boring, unhealthy snack every day it is less likely your child will look forward to coming home and talking to you about their day. If a new fun snack is expected then they won’t be able to resist coming home for a the exciting snack and maybe a conversation too!

5 Steps to Scrapping PDF files:

Step 1: Go to the website that has the PDF document you want use in your scrapbooking project, and save it to your computer.

Step 2: Next, open the PDF document in either Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.

If your PDF document has more than one page, select the page you want to open by clicking on it, and then click OK button.

Now that we have the PDF documents in Elements (or Photoshop) they can be scrapped.

Step 3: Select the frame with the Marquee Tool. To pick an item on the PDF document to bring over to your digital scrapbooking project

Repeat the process and bring over as many items from the PDF document into your digital scrapbooking project!

Step 4: Once the item in PDF Document is selected, then with the Move Tool drag and drop it on to digital scrapbooking paper or project.

Step 5: Scrap it! Finish your scrapbooking project!

Now we have turned this PDF Document into a digital embellishments that we can use to scrap, and make other Digital Scrapbook Pages, or other things like mouse pads, calendar pages, cards and more!

Scrapping Ideas and Back to School

Working in an elementary school this past two years has really opened my eyes to the ups and downs that children face each and every day. They enter the school building with big bright eyes, nervous smiles, tears running down their cheeks, and arms loaded to their limits. Each child, each little precious one, comes with their own little personality, abilities, and emotional limits. As parents we trust in the educators that we turn our children over to day after day, to pick up where we left off. My children, I am lucky enough to report, enter a caring environment each day. They are lifted from their lowest lows to their highest heights by the teachers and staff members that they come in contact with. For this I am grateful as I realize that these people often spend more time in the day than I do with my children.

So as I took pictures of the kids in their new backpacks and tennis shoes this year, the thought crossed my mind that I need to get a better “picture” of what going back to school looks like to my children. For example, as I create a back to school scrapbook page for them shouldn’t I get a picture of the people who greet them each day as they enter the school parking lot? I want them to remember Mrs. Hanson and Ms. Quinn who walk out to greet them as they cross the road each morning. How about Mrs. Lucky? No one will ever forget her. She is the first face they see if they come in through the wrong door in the morning. Undistinguishable by a small child, yet any adult that knows her would notice that as she scoots them back out the door in the right direction, she has a giggle held back in her throat that is waiting to explode into a laugh because she thinks they are so darn cute. Oh, and they also have to face her and receive a tardy slip when they are late. It’s inevitable, she will give them the slip, tell them to hurry to class, and then call after them on a first name basis, “have a great day”! I can’t go on without mentioning Mrs. Buckley. She’s the lady in the office that knows everything. If a child needs to call their mom or missed the bus, wants a band-aid, or simply can’t hold still in class, Mrs. Buckley knows what to do. She has the phone number, the ice, the band-aids and the maturity along with the experience to discipline with just the right touch.

As we go about our day as parents, I bet we rarely notice the people that prepare and serve lunch for our children. But the children do. A common after school topic at my house is how nice the lunch lady is that lets the 5th graders have seconds. I also think that it takes a special person to get my third grade daughter to want to wash tables rather than go out to the playground. Now, I want to make sure that the school counselor, our enthusiastic music teacher, the librarians, the bus driver, and the P.E. teacher are permanent faces in my children’s elementary school scrapbooks. Without them, elementary school would not have such a delicious variety of flavors. Before I worked at the school I didn’t realize what a vital part the custodian plays in the lives of my kids…..He puts the tables up, he puts the tables down, he sweeps and wipes and cleans up all the unsightly messes that most of us don’t even want to think about. Not to mention he is tall and can reach all those too high places that even with a latter some of us can’t. So, let’s keep him in our scrapbook pages among the faces of people that we owe a debt of gratitude to, or at least a jelly doughnut.

At the top of my list of important school pictures would of course be the classroom teacher and the principal. They work endless hours, and most of the time thankless ones. I want to thank them. They are doing for my children what I can’t and I will forever be thankful to them. I want my children to have an attitude of gratitude also, so how about thanking them with a scrapbook page or two. I’m always scrambling for a thank you gift idea.

So I started thinking, wouldn’t it be fun to let my children give their teacher a gift to last a life-time? They could even include the whole class in this end of the year surprise. Pictures of the students participating in different activities throughout the year, hmmmm…I think this idea is a winner!

So as your kids go back to school think about all those scrapping moments that are happening right now, and don’t forget all the IMPORTANT PEOPLE that make your child’s school experience a memory to last a life-time!

Six Sports Photo Tips for Digital Scrapbooking!

Every year when school starts I am reminded that I live my life in seasons. Though Fall may be my favorite season, I am suddenly jolted into the reality that my sports seasons (that dictate my entire schedule) are here in full force.

During the Fall, Winter, and Spring season, I may be the mother of children and a husband participating in six different sports at one time. This is often exhausting, demanding, and can become very frustrating for me and so I have come up with a way to focus on the positive and forget that there can be anything negative about it.

I don’t believe that I am alone in the effort to raise children that enjoy sports and so I would like to share my method with any of you sports mom’s out there that need a break.

Here are some ideas for you to enjoy the seasons in your life just as much as I do.

Six Sports Photo Tips:

Tip 1: Always carry your camera with you as well as your sense of humor. I was delighted the other day as I watched my nine year old daughter participate in a track practice.

When I first arrived at the practice I couldn’t find her, I became worried and with camera in hand I started walking to the track where the other kids were practicing.

I had a good laugh when I arrived at the very back of the track and found my daughter with a friend catching grasshoppers. This was a picture perfect moment.

Tip 2: Focus on taking pictures of moments that mean the most to an individual child. My thirteen year old sister-in-law’s basketball team had a particularly rough game one day. All of the girls were crying in the locker room as the coach was not happy with their performance on the court.

The coaches wife walked into the locker room and saw all the crying girls and changed the entire atmosphere immediately by saying “Girls, it’s o.k., at least your hair was cute!”

Now that I have my own thirteen year old girl, I often think of this story when taking pictures of her in a sports setting.

I try to remember that to her it’s important to have a picture of her hair tied up in yellow and green ribbons and to get a picture of the balloons the parents have decorated the chairs with. Keep in mind that each child is an individual and focus on taking pictures that would be important in their memories.

Tip 3: Take step-by-step photos of the “sports process.”

Sometimes we only bring cameras to the game or competition, but capturing some of the shots of the practices, the first time they put on the uniform, and even the kids enjoying the after game snacks is a great way to capture the whole event and then when it is digitally scrapped you can make a complete album of the whole sports process!

This is great way to keep the memories alive!

Tip 4: Ask a friend to take pictures for you and return the favor. This year my son received the most special gift. He was a Freshman in High School and was on the Varsity Wrestling Team. One of the kids on the team had a grandfather who is a professional photographer and he also had a sideline pass at the State Tournament that got him fairly close to the mats. As my son went out to wrestle in the Quarter final match against the favored Senior in his weight category, this grandfather said he just had a feeling that something special was about to unfold. He took pictures of the match from start to finish. At the banquet he presented my son with a framed and scrapped plaque that showed the match in detail. He had a picture of his hand being raised in victory, a picture of him hugging his dad (and coach), hugging his grandpa, and hugging his great grandpa on the sidelines.

This is a priceless gift and one that I could not have produced for myself as you can imagine if you are a sports mom, I was shaking to badly to take a decent picture.

We don’t always have a professional around to captures those moments, so ask a friend to take pictures for you and return the favor to them.

Remember be ready to take step by step photos so that you don’t miss that sports moment of a lifetime.

Tip 5: Take your PC with you! I always love to take my laptop with me so that I can use that 10 minute space of time while I am waiting for a practice to finish up or while I am waiting for a game to start. I have learned that these little spaces of time really add up and make it possible for me to enjoy my scrapbooking hobby while I am on the run. Tip 6: Get Sports Digital Scrapbooking Supplies to put your photos on, and combine digital scrapbooking with your families sport hobbies!

You sports photos need to go somewhere besides sitting in your digital camera! Take them and digitally scrap them so you can share your sports events with others!
