The most meaningful baby albums, scrapbooks, and journals go beyond the details of birth weight and time-of-day to capture the true emotion behind the birth by using journaling and photos.

New Mother’s Journaling Prompts:

• How did your pregnancy go? Special Memories?
• When did you learn about it sex? What did you feel?
• How did you select the name?
• How did you know you where in labor? What is your Labor story?
• Who went with you to the hospital? How did you feel.. calm, scared.. other??
• What do you remember about your surroundings at the time of the birth? What was happening and how did you feel?
• Describe the feeling when your baby was first placed in your arms? How did you baby look, smell, feel?
• Describe the feelings of seeing your baby in your spouse or partner’s arms for the first time? Where they calm, scared… how did that make you feel?
• Who came to see the baby? What special things do you remember they said or felt about your baby?
• What are other memories of your spouse or partner with the baby? Like when you were together with the baby for the first time your saw the baby or the first time you were alone with the baby?
• What was it like to take the baby home? Who was there to greet the baby? What feelings did you have?
• Any funny, or surprising story… like did you put the diapers on backwards the first time?
• Were there any feelings of fear about parenting? If so, why?
• What advice would you have liked to known and now would tell new mothers-to-be?
• Recall how you felt upon seeing the other members of your family with your young baby. In what special way did they each bond with the baby?
• What was the first song you sang to your baby?
• What was it like to put your baby in his/her room in their own crib? What did this room look like, what feelings did you want your baby to experience when they were in this room or crib?
• What do you hope for your baby? What are your dreams or values you wish for him/her?
• What was the first book you read to your baby? Why?
• What do you want to teach your baby?
• What message do you want your baby to have?
• When did you feel all was “OK”?
• In what way are you proud of yourself – as a new mother?
• What changes have you experienced, more organized, loving… etc.?
• Special rituals like Baptism? Circumcision? Naming the Baby? Other ceremonies, or traditions? How did you feel? How did others feel? Who came?
• How did your relationship with your own mother change? Was there a shift in perspective? How about changes towards your Grandmothers? Women in general?

These prompts can serve as inspiration to include writing into a digital scrapbooking page and they can also inspire photos and scrapbooking themes too!!!

Use these prompts with those special new baby and new mom photos that will coordinate with the journaling prompts too!

Life is busier (and crazier) than ever now that I’m a momma, but there are a few times I think it’s critical to stop what I’m doing, take pictures of my baby, and scrap them. And holidays are that kind of a time, where you need to make the time to preserve special moments in your child’s life. I’ve also learned how important it is to get in a few of the photos myself. I learned my lesson this last Christmas (my son’s very first Christmas!). Digital scrapbooking has been a great way to keep track of my son’s holidays too. I don’t have to print out all my new photos every time I take them, and I don’t just let them sit on my computer to just forget about them either. My own grandmother had been such a influence on my everyday life. So how could I be such a grandmother to my grandson when he was thousands of miles away?!

My husband and I were blessed with our first grandchild a few months ago and it is such a joy!

However, my daughter, her husband, and our new grandson live across the country – I live in California and they live in Tennessee!

Realistically, I probably will only see in him in person one to three times a year! I really have been wrestling with the idea of being a long distance grandmother!

So this is what inspired this blog series. I want to be on the look-out for ideas that will help me be a great long distant grandmother. And when I find some Ideas I will share them with you dear reader!

The first Idea we will explore is sending your long distance grandchild a book. When I have talked to some of my friends that live far from their grandchildren they tell me to send him a book.

That is ok, but let’s see if I can make it more special and memorable!

For Example: Make a habit of sending each grandchild a book once a month or every several months – kind of like a Book of the Month Club for Grandchildren! Pick a theme or focus on special subjects that you like to talk about when you’re  together or over the phone.  Underline, or make some comments in the book before sending. Write a special message in the front of the book, sign and date it!  Ask them to write a special message in the front or back of the book after they have read it. (Have parents help if they are to young to write in it!). Also, ask them to underline special parts of the book and write comments in the margins too! The book will be more precious over time if it marked up with special writings from grandparents and grandchild!

Have the parent take photos of the child reading the story and have them send the photos to you! After you have the photos you can scrap them!

Think about making a  scrapbook of the the books and memories! Then give the scrapbook to the child when they graduate from High school or College!

In the scrap page you could include images of the book, photos of the child and the book, and images of you at the time you sent the book!

I think this is a great idea and I am going to start picking out my first book to send to my grandson today! I think this will be one way to stay close to him despite the miles!

If you have a chance to take your children to see the new babies it is such a fun family activity.

Sometimes just a drive in the country can give you a chance to see the new babies in the fields as you drive down country roads. Just seeing animals as you drive can be a big treat for children and can give you the feeling that spring is showing up!

If you get a chance to actually visit a farm, perhaps you know a farmer that will let you visit and see the new baby animals on his farm. This can be a special event for your children too.

If you get a chance to take some photos and scrap them – it is a nice way to preserve the memories of spring too!

If you don’t know any farmers, or don’t know any country drives that would give you a chance to see the spring babies. Then try going to a a zoo! I live by a couple of zoos and they always have new baby animals in the spring.

One zoo near my house – the Wild Animal Park let’s animals roam in a more natural settings and it is so fun to see the new babies wandering around with their mothers! I love seeing the baby elephants, giraffes, and hippopotamuses.

This can be one way you can show your children the cycles of nature and signs of spring.

Take a few moments and look for signs of spring? Take photos and scrap your findings!

It’s true, I probably won’t look like I’m ready to srtut my stuff down the runway right after I give birth, that’s for sure, but I hadn’t really even thought of that… I have so much on my mind already, from getting the nursery set-up, to taking baby classes, and just getting through the remaining weeks of pregnancy (oh, and not to mention, the easy activity of giving birth to the baby itself- haha), that as much as I think about photos (I do work for Digital Scrapbooks and More, ya’ know!) Personally, I think it’s very important to take those first-moment photos. I want to have my husband capture the very first time I hold and kiss my precious little baby for the very first time. The latest pair of designer strappy sandals? You were once the first person to own them. But now? The last thing on your mind, or in your budget, is a silly pair of shoes that aren’t made for high-performance running for preventing kid-accidents, or the fabulous, wear-while-gardening-or-out-to-dinner shoes called Crocs.

You laugh at your old naïve self and all the things you used to want and would claim to “need.” But those so-called necessities are a thing of the past: now you fantasize about full-featured mini-vans instead of convertible coupes; your plush, white carpets have transformed into multi-colored polka dotted rugs; and your high-end, genuine leather sofas are now detailed with permanent marker hieroglyphic design…. Yes, things have changed, your priorities have changed, and all that said: you wouldn’t change a thing.

So, when you find a special baby product that “gets” the new you, one that incorporates the things you want, “need,” AND saves you money, you love them back! Follow these five money-saving tips so that you too can have more cash for things like formula, toys, diapers… and who knows? Maybe even a pair of semi-strappy sandals:

1. Pick Up Parenting Magazines. The next time you’re at the grocery store, grab a free parenting magazine and you might be surprised at all the local, low-cost family/kid activities available. You might also stumble across a contest or two that could score you some free kids’ stuff if you end up being the lucky winner!

2. Do Double-Duty Products. Investing in items that are multiple-purpose is a great way to save money. Buy things that you need now that can also be things that you’ll need later. A pregnancy dress that can be worn several ways or that also works as a post-pregnancy outfit is good option; or perhaps a crib that can be converted into a toddler bed can save some serious cash in the long-run.

3. Log on for Diaper Deals. Visit the website of your favorite diaper brand, sign up for their newsletter, and you can usually get some pretty good diaper discounts. By joining their fan-club you might find yourself eligible for free diapers or receive special diaper deals that you won’t find in your local newspaper.

4. Get a hold of Hand-Me-Downs. While some baby items, like car seats (or, say, diapers?) are obviously better when they’re brand-new, other items don’t matter as much. Baby clothes are one of those baby items where the quality between a new and used item might not be very noticeable, but the difference between the price tag can be enormous! You’d be shocked at the steals that you can find for baby clothes through eBay or on Craigslist. The best part? No one will ever know that you got a cute baby shirt for $2 instead of $20. Bonus Tip: Go to the FREE section on Craigslist, and every once and a while there’s an “angel ad” where someone decides to give away their no longer needed baby clothes for free! These individuals may have older children, not need the baby clothes, and will thank you for taking them off their hands! Keep an eye out for angel ads, which are money-saving jackpots!

5. Do it Yourself: Professional-Looking Baby Photos & Books. You love to see your beautiful baby’s face in picture frames, baby books, and on your personal websites or social networking profiles, but stop throwing your money down the drain on high-priced photographers, photo prints, or photo albums. You don’t have to spend ridiculous amounts of money on making your baby photos look like they were shot by a professional photographer when you can easily retouch your photos yourself! It’s much easier than you might expect: whip out your digital camera, take some photos of your little one, and get rid of red-eye, convert to black and white, or easily add artistic-looking effects to make your favorite baby photos look even better and professional with the Digital Scrapbooks and More.com’s Baby Series Photo Editing Tutorials!
