As our special day as mother’s is right around the corner I have noticed recently that quotes about mothers are all over in the stores and in people’s homes. A few years ago my 13 year old daughter gave me a tile for Christmas that read “Mommy, thanks for growing me so good.” I considered this a beautiful thank you which I display proudly in my home. I also recently had the opportunity to gather some of my
mother’s treasures and keep those that were most meaningful to me. Among these was a tile with the saying “A mother holds her children’s hands for a moment, their hearts for a life time.” As she has grown children, this sentiment is perfect for her time in life. And then I came across a decorative plaque in my friends home that shared a message relevant to all mothers at all times in life. It read “To the world you are a mother, but to our family you are the world.” These quotes beautifully state the blessing that a mother is to her family. How do we as mothers help our children remember those special memories that create such sentiment?
I
would like to share a creative idea that a sister-in-law shared with me several years ago. As each child was born she made a special box for them. Each mother’s day she has a tradition that she writes each child a letter telling them what she thinks their special accomplishment of the year were, what special qualities they have developed and just all the reasons she thinks that they are special. On each Mother’s Day she takes a picture with each child, she then gives them the picture along with the note. After they have read the note they are asked to put the picture and note in their box for safe keeping. As the children have gotten older they have written their own special notes to include in the box about all the reasons their mother is special. I found this to be a touching way of keeping family treasures through pictures.
Another sister-in-law found that to her receiving gifts on Mother’s Day from 
her children was nice but not necessarily something that brought her happiness. She decided to invite her children to share a gift with her each year that was a gift of self talent. I marvel each year as I visit her home often, she always has new artwork of some type in the kitchen picture frames. I have seen paintings, dried flowers, poems and sketches. Each child has given their mother such beautiful, thoughtful gifts of themselves.
I also know of a mother that simply asked for no gifts from her children on Mother’s Day. She suggested that they write her a note telling her what new goal they had met during that year or what new talent they had developed. I love this idea! What a neat what to stay in touch with your grown children and to show interest in their developing abilities.
However you choose to celebrate and make Mother’s Day memorable, I hope that you will include pictures. Pictures bring immediate pleasure and memories to our minds. Pictures bring back joy, laughter, and experiences to our thoughts. Share pictures with those you love. You will put a smile on their faces!
