How to: Basic Info on Installing Fonts for Digital Scrapbooking on a PC or MAC

As a digital Scrapbooker we love those fonts that make our digital scrapbooking pages exHow to install fonts for Digital scrapbookingciting and personal.

However, if you are tired of the set fonts that came with your computer and long for other ones  that could really jazz up your scrapbooking layouts.

Then you might be happy to know that it is easy to add fonts to your computer.

Once the new fonts are added then you can use them in Photoshop or Elements to design great digital scrapbooking pages and projects.

However, before you can use new fonts in your scrapbooking pages, you must get the font and install it on your computer.

Here is information to help you install fonts on your computer:

Some Fonts come with an installer – if you buy extra fonts on a CD, or How to install fonts for Digital scrapbookingeven if you download free fonts, sometimes they come with a font installer.

This makes it easy for you to install them on your computer. You just have to follow the instruction for the installer or double click on the installer icon and follow the wizard to install the font(s) on your computer.

However, lots of FREE fonts don’t come with an installer so you have to manually install the font on your computer yourself before you can use it.

Here’s how to manually install a font on a computer without a font installer program:

If you already have downloaded a new font please proceed to next step. If not, then download the new font (see this article on how to download a zipped file). Next, save the font on your computer, and unzip them if they are in a compressed folder (see this article on how to unzip a compressed folder).

Special Note: There are many great fonts available online for free. Before you download a font, make sure you trust the source.

Next, you must select your computer like a PC or Mac and the operating system like Vista and then do the following that matches you computer and operating system

Note: the following are basic helpful suggestion to be used as a basic intro guide to installing fonts, but does not cover all fonts, cases, and computers. When in doubt check your computer and operating system manual or online help guides for more complete and specific information for your computer.

Install Fonts on a PC: Windows 7

  1. Right-click the font you want to install and click Install.
  2. Tip: You can also install a font by dragging it into Fonts in Control Panel.

Directions for Other PC Versions:

Install Fonts on a PC: Windows Vista and Windows XP

  1. Download font.
  2. Extract the compressed folder or zip file
  3. Navigate to the fonts folder (maybe located in this spot C:\Windows\Fonts) Install a font by dragging it into the Fonts Folder. 3-9-2011 10-07-01 AM
  4. *Now you may use your font in most applications including the following: Microsoft Office, Elements, Photoshop etc.

Another way to install on Window Vista

  1. Open Fonts by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, and then clicking Fonts.
  2. Click File, and then click Install New Font.If you don’t see the File menu, press ALT.
  3. In the Add Fonts dialog box, under Drives, click the drive where the font that you want to install is located.
  4. Under Folders, double-click the folder containing the fonts that you want to add.
  5. Under List of fonts, click the font that you want to add, and then click Install.

How To Install Fonts on a Mac

After downloading the font file, you may need to unzip the font folder if it is compressed, you can use a program called UnstuffIt, the PC Unzip software equivalent.

Font installation on a Mac is a simple drag and drop operation for  fonts

Here’s How:

  1. Close Open Programs. Before installing any new fonts on a Mac, close any applications you have open. Newly installed Mac fonts may not appear in your software font menus if the program is running during font installation.
  2. Find the Fonts.
    Locate the fonts you want to install in the Finder and select each one.
  3. Move the Fonts.
    • Mac OS X: Drag and drop the fonts into the Fonts folder of the Library folder. (Drag the fonts in the Finder to system wide or user font folders such as /Library/Fonts or
      /Users/<your user name>/Library/Fonts)How to install fonts for Digital scrapbooking, Elements, and Photoshop for Mac users
    • Mac OS 9.x or 8.x: Drag the fonts to the System Folder. Click OK when prompted. 
    • Classic Mode: For applications running under Classic mode you have to install Mac TrueType or Mac PostScript Type 1 fonts in the Fonts folder of the Classic System Folder.

Other Helps on Installing a MAC font on other older operating systems

If you are using the MAC Operating System 7.1, 7.5.x, 7.6.x or 8.x you can drag the fonts you want to install on top of the closed System Folder and it automatically installs them. There is a folder in the System Folder named Fonts where it stores fonts. You can install fonts at any time without restarting your computer but they will not be available to running applications, including the Finder, until they are closed and opened again.
