Learn how to make Large Locker Magnets!

It is almost back-to-school time and it’s time to get the kids excited for another school year.

So, what do you do? One back-to-school idea that can get your teen motivated is to make fun school accessories… like personalized locker magnets!

Get your teen excited about adding some of their personality to this year’s school locker and adding playful decor to their special school space!

This how-to blog will give you the steps for creating large (full sized digital scrapbooking page) personalized magnets- specifically made for a school locker!

Follow These Four Easy Steps for Making Large Digital Scrapbooking Magnets for School Lockers:

Step 1: Buy some special Magnet Sheets. You can make and print your very own magnets (all at home!) if you have the right equipment! Buy magnet sheets which have a printable surface on one side and a magnet surface on the other side. Magnet sheets usually come in the standard US paper size (8.5 x 11”) which means you can print an ENTIRE Digital Scrapbooking Page on one of these oversized magnets… making it perfect for lockers!

Get magnet paper to print your digital scrapbooking page on! If you aren’t sure where to get this type of specialty paper, you can start out by looking at your local office supply store and asking for magnet sheet paper. It is usually found in the same area as the “iron-on-transfer” paper. Not to mention, you can also order magnet sheets online!

Although there are plenty of online companies you can find magnet sheets, here are two to buy online: 1. Staples sells Avery Magnet Sheets for $12.99 for 5 sheets! 2. Office Depot sells their own brand of Magnet Sheet paper for $15.99 for 5 sheets.

In the example to the left, I used a digital scrapbooking Quick Page to speed up the scrapbooking process! Quick Pages are essentially a pre-designed digital scrapbooking page that has most of the design, embellishments, and frames already scrapped. I only had to add my photos and a little text, and then I was done! Although Quick Pages make digital scrapbooking super-fast, you can always use regular digital scrapbooking suppliesto personalize your own digital scrapbooking page as well!

Again, to save time I used a Quick Page.

If you would like to use this same Quick Page Kit for your Large Magnet Project you can find it in our Scrap Shop. The nice thing about this particular kit is that it is formatted at 8.5 x 11″, the standard US paper dimensions, to match the same size as the magnet sheets! That means, you don’t have to worry about reformatting the paper size to match the magnet size. And as mentioned before, Quick Pages mean the page is practically completed, just add your photos and text, and you’re done!

If you decide to convert your digital scrapbooking page into a magnet, then have your teen scrap the page and design it with their favorite photos of special events, family, and friends! If the page is for a younger child’s locker, then you might want to make it together on the computer. If you are not sure how to begin digital scrapbooking, then get the training for either Photoshop Elements or Photoshop!

For best results, make sure to follow the directions that come along with the magnet sheet paper and make those recommendations or printer adjustments.

But in the meantime, here are a couple of printing tips:

Before you begin printing on your magnet sheets, make sure to test your finished digital scrapbooking page on a regular piece of paper first! The last thing you want is a fixable mistake on your printed magnet sheet. Print a test page on a regular piece of paper, make any additional printing or page edits, and then print on the magnet sheet once you feel confident about your page and it’s print settings.

Set your printer settings A couple of other points, you might want to think about when printing your magnet on a home printer: You may need to determine if your printer has the capabilities to print to the paper (or magnet’s) edge. If your printer can print to the edge, you may need to turn on those settings before printing on the magnet sheet. That way, your magnet will be printed to the end of the page and to the end of the magnet.

If your printer can’t print to the edge of the paper/magnet, then you might want to change the printer settings (see arrows in the image example). If you change the print settings of the scrap page, you can specifically choose to include an even, white border edge around the digital scrapbooking page. Make sure to make any print adjustments as your print on the test page to get all the settings right before you print out on the expensive magnet sheets. Want help saving and printing your projects? Put digital scrapbooking locker magnets in school locker Step 4: Put the adorable magnet on a locker! Now that you, or your teen has made a digital scrapbooking magnet, all you have to do is place it on a school locker for instant, adorable locker decor!

Here is another idea to consider: Mention to  your teen that they might want to have their friends write friendly messages on the magnets with permanent marker!

At the end of the school year, have your teen bring their scrapbooking magnets home and scan the magnets-love notes and all, and include it in a new, end-of-the-year school memory book!

Well that is it! It really is that easy to make a large full page digital scrapbooking magnet for a school locker!
