Undo your steps in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements

If you have been following along with our blog articles then hopefully you saw the article yesterday on how to use the undo step feature in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements – (Quick Tip: Experiment More, Use the Undo Steps Feature in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements!).

This is a fantastic feature for photo editing and digital scrapbooking.

This feature works in both Photoshop and Photoshop Elements and allows you to undo whatever you have done on your project and start over! You can view your steps in the History Panel.

However, the default setting in both Photoshop or Elements only gives you about 20 undo “states”. Today’s blog will give you information on how to change the settings to get more undo “states”! This will give you more opportunities to really experiment in your digital scrapbooking and photo editing projects!

Need More Undo’s in Photoshop or Elements? Just add More History States!

The number of undo states available is determined by the setting you choose in the Preferences, which can be found in Photoshop or Elements by choosing:

PC users go to Edit > Preferences > Performance.

Mac users choose Photoshop/Edit > Preferences > Performance.

How do You Change the Settings?

Once you go to Preferences > Performance then you will see an area called History & Cache – this is the place you can change how many states that Photoshop or Elements can remember. See the image below – in Photoshop, it works the same in ElementsSettings for Undo your steps in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements

You can slide the slider to get more undo “states”, I changed mine to 55 undo states, and what this means is that my Photoshop can remember 55 states and I can undo any of those step if I like.

Settings for Undo your steps in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements When you are done choosing how many steps you want Photoshop or Elements to remember, then click the Ok Button.

Undo your steps in Photoshop or Photoshop ElementsNow that you have set more history states for Photoshop to remember in the Preferences, you can undo more things if you like on your photo or scrapbooking project. So, feel free to experiment more, and still undo things you don’t like.

Now remember, when you hit your number of “states” mine is 55, then the oldest edits are eliminated from History as new edits occur. Remember that each brush stroke, and each mouse click with a tool is one edit. If you think you may need to step back in history (use multiple undo), keep an eye on you history states as you work on your projects.

Note: History is not saved once you close the document. So this means that Photoshop only remembers what you have been doing when you are working on it but once it is closed and reopened – you start with a new, a new memory that is!

On the other hand, lots of RAM, you can raise the number of states saved. Or see this article so you can increase your virtual memory – Increase Memory get Better Performance in Photoshop or Elements!

Now that you have more steps for Photoshop or Elements remember, then you can really try your hand at experimenting, making digital scrapbooking supplies or editing a photo.
