Children and Digital Scrapbooking

April 15th, 2010

Teach your children to digi scrap You don’t have to be a grown-up to enjoy digital scrapbooking – children can have some of the fun too!

Digital Scrapbooking is a wonderful way to preserve family memories, but it also can help create memories if you ask your children to get involved in the process!

Children these days are very computer-savvy, even very young children, and so why not direct them into Digital Scrapbooking? A skill that will create lasting family memories and will also encourage them to get involved in an activity that can evolve into a hobby of their own!

Here are some tips to help your younger children get started in Digital Scrapbooking:

Let your children take digital photos Tip 1: Let them take their own photos for a Digital Scrapbooking Project! The first step in Digital Scrapbooking is taking photos! This is a great place to have your children start too! Children love “playing Photographer!” When children take photos they see things from a different perspective than adults, some of it might be just their height but other reasons might be they just see things differently. When you look at the photos they take you might be surprised by interesting shots they capture for their Digital Scrapbooking Pages!

To get them started, you might make it a game and give them an assignment; for example, for one week take three pictures each day of the most unique “find” of the day. Perhaps the most interesting thing that day is a lady bug, an interesting rock, a baby sister doing something funny… or even the dog sleeping! At the end of the week, use these photos to create a Digital Scrapbooking album from a child’s perspective of the world.

Tip 2: Let the child pick the Digital Scrapbooking papers and Teach your children to digi scrapbackgrounds. With young children you might have to be more involved in the scrapbooking process, at least at first when they are learning about digital scrapbooking.

However, don’t do the whole thing or children will quickly become disinterested!

Children love to be part of the planning process, so a parent  could select three or four different Digital Scrapbooking Teach your children to digi scrappapers to use as the foundation of the Scrapbooking project,  then let the child pick the final paper color or type from those options.

Depending on their age you can let them set the digital paper into place on your computer within the graphics program like Photoshop or Elements.

For younger kids, let them watch you place the paper on the transparent background and begin creating the Digital Scrapbooking page.

Teach your children to digi scrapTip 3: Children love picking the photos for each Digital Scrapbooking page! Once the digital paper is in place within the graphics software, have your children pick their favorite photos to use in the Digital Scrapbook page. Have them pick a specific number, explaining that only two or three photos will be included on each particular page, and that they need to pick their favorites.

As the child picks out the photos ask them about each of the pictures; ask Teach your children to digi scrapthem why they chose each picture and why they like it.

See what comes out of the conversation. Write down what your children say.

You might even end up using some of the dialog you had while you where scrapping with your child in the actual Digital Scrapbooking page!

Get children to participate in the Digital Scrapbooking experience,  not only helps to preserve family memories, but also it helps create new memories too by bonding together over making Digital Scrapbooking pages together!

Digital scrap supplies Tip 4: Have your child pick and arrange some of the Digital Embellishments, Frames and Other Digital Scrapbooking Supplies. Many Digital Scrapbooking Kits come with all sorts of goodies, like digital papers, frames, wordart, embellishments, and more!

Children like being part of the process, and letting them pick the items in the kit can help them feel like they are important because they were able to choose the supplies in this creative activity!

Again, with young children, you may want to limit the selection of  embellishments, or scrapbooking supplies to save some time and frustration in the decision making process. You can also have preselected certain themes.Teach your children to digi scrap

When you let your children pick the digital embellishments and scrapbooking themes this can help them develop a life long hobby, great memories, and help to develop their sense of artistic style and design!

Digital Scrapbooking is easy and even young children can do some of the simple tasks if you show them how!

Teach your children to digi scrap Tip 5: Have patience and be willing to let them express their creativity. Sometimes as parents we want things to be “just right,” so instead of letting our children explore and learn from experience, we tell them what to use and where things should go. Unfortunately “helping” to much usually makes children disinterested! Some children will want to give up or even start a fight too let you know you have gotten to involved!

Letting your child compose the page with minimal coaching will produce a very interesting and memorable scrapbooking page that your child can truly claim they, in fact, created. Usually it will also produce a more happy memory too!

Teach your children to digi scrapAs your child  continues in Digital Scrapbooking, you both will be able to look at their growth in the hobby by the types of pages they create each year. Plus, if they have more opportunities to create their own pages, chances are they will enjoy it and do it more often with you in the future!

Teach your children to digi scrap Tip 6: Tell everyone! Children love positive recognition, so when you “show and tell” family and friends about the projects they are involved in, the big tasks they accomplished, and how great of a job that they did, it can only make their self-esteem soar.

Digital scrapbooking
is also great because it makes it easy to email creations to grandparents, other family members, and friends. They can take it to “show and tell” at school too!
