Green Eggs and Ham: Our St. Patrick’s Day Tradition and Digital Scrapbooking

(By Jennifer Barlow – Originally posted 3/9/2009)

Celebrating St. Patrick's Day

I have fond feelings for St. Patrick’s Day because every year, my mom would wake my sister and I up to a truly “green” breakfast! It was so exciting because on a plate would be green scrambled eggs (literally), a slice of ham, green orange juice, and piece of toast cut into a shamrock shape with green jelly on top! It was such an out-of-the-ordinary and exciting breakfast for a kid. My parents would always recite the Dr. Seuss book, “Cat in the Hat” about Sam-I-Am and green eggs and ham as we ate our meal. I loved this tradition so much, that I insisted that she continue this St. Patrick’s Day breakfast as a teenager, and even as an adult!

I actually visited my parents last year over St. Patrick’s Day and asked her if she would make me “THE” breakfast! She thought it was so funny that a grown, married woman would still want her mom to make green eggs and ham for St. Patrick’s Day. It’s funny how something so simple can become so truly special.

Apparently this tradition was not only practiced by my mom for me, but my grandmother had started this tradition in our family for my mom and her siblings. She was the one who was the first to serve the green eggs in our family!

Green Eggs for St Patricks Day

My mom continued this tradition for us, adding the other green food-items. It’s incredible how a fun holiday tradition carries through the generations. I have no doubt that when I have children someday, that they will be enjoying a green breakfast of their own when St. Patty’s Day rolls around!

So, with a tradition so dear to my heart, I thought I’d share a few pics of my own enjoying Leprechaun-food! But I was surprised when I realized I didn’t seem to have any of these St. Patrick’s Day photos! I then asked my mom if she would email me some photos of us enjoying this holiday, and she was flabbergasted when she realized she didn’t have any photos either! We were both amazed that all these years, all these breakfasts, there wasn’t a single photo to prove this tradition ever happened! And what about my Grandma taking pics? Nope! She hadn’t either! We were all shocked.

This is yet another example, of such precious memories; traditions I request to participate in (even as an adult), that we never even snapped a photo of! This is another reason why taking digital photos of special holidays and cherished people are so important. That’s why I decided that though I don’t have children quite yet, and though I am not sure what other green foods I could add to this special ritual, I WILL be the first to begin capturing it all on film and Digital Scrapping it!

Take photos of your family this year celebrating your “green” holidays too! See our St. Patrick’s Day Digital Supplies at the Digital Scrapbooks and More Scrap Shop.

Digital Scrapbooks and More's Custom BrushesI want to make Shamrock Toast too, but didn’t have a Shamrock cookie cutter!

No problem! Use the St. Patrick’s Day Custom Brushes!

I “Stamped” the Custom Brush on on a a new digital scrap page and then I printed it, next I cut the shape out and place it on top of a piece of bread.

Using Custom Brushes as a Cookie Cutter!I used a knife and cuttoast around the Shamrock Custom Brush Page to make my very own Shamrock Toast for St Patrick’s day. I needed a sharper knife but to make cleaner edges, but even so this breakfast will still be magical and fun. I just toasted in my oven and then put on green jelly!

Ps. you can make green jelly by using apricot or peach jelly and adding green food coloring. The wonders of food coloring!

Next, take lots of photos and make a digital scrapbooking page!
