No Such Luck or… My Lucky Day, Depends on which way you look at it!
(by Denise Bell – Originally posted 2/18/2009)
Somewhere hidden deep in the memories of my high school treasure box is a Four Leaf Clover beautifully framed and preserved. It was given to me by a loved one when they returned from a dream vacation of a life time to Ireland. Little did this special person know what memories this Four Leaf Clover would drum up for me as Four Leaf Clovers hold a special spot in my memories that I had never revealed to anyone.
Across the street from my home was a field of beautiful grass that was maintained by our city. As a child I spent tireless hours running, playing ball, and making wishes in that green field of grass. Most people wouldn’t have taken a second look at the grass as
they drove by, but I spent hours laying in my field sifting through the grass to find what I thought were Four Leaf Clovers.
I would pick them one by one, throwing the three leaf clovers off to the side and then, I would find my treasure, a Four Leaf Clover. I have since learned that those were just some kind of weed overtaking the grass, but in my mind, those Four Leaf Clovers were what wishes were made of and how some dreams came true. I wish I could have a picture of those childhood clovers hanging on my bedroom wall to remind me how lucky I really am.
I spent the day with my four wish-making children today which reminded me of my Four Leaf Clovers. They wished they had their homework done, they wished they had money to buy a special shirt at the mall, they wished that they didn’t have to clean up their rooms, and they wished that their little brother and big sister would just leave them alone and go away. And then an amazing thing happened, my oldest son pulled out his quarters and started buying bubble gum out of the machine.
He wasn’t chewing the gum but just holding them in his hand. I thought this was strange and pulled a few quarters out of my own purse at the request of my smallest daughter. My son walked over to us and started giving the gum to the other kids and commented to us how he had jokingly told the machine he wanted green gum or no gum. We laughed at his comment but his little sister ran to the machine stuck in her quarter and ran back to show him her Green gum.
We asked her how she was so lucky to get the Green gum and she wittingly stated “I just told the machine that I wanted to see my brother get mad!” She quickly put on a cute smile and gave her brother the gum. So what was so amazing about that, just a couple of wishes that made us smile a little bit and helped the kids make my wish for a happy fun day together come true.

If my memory serves me right, I believe that when I was lying in the field of clovers, that’s probably just what I was wishing for, a happy, fun, day together with the ones I loved.
Today was my lucky day, so on those days that I am feeling like I have no such luck, I think I will look at my scrapbooked pictures of my kids blowing bubbles at the mall with Clovers, Pots of Gold, Rainbows and other happy memories.
To make my scrapbooking page I took all these pictures and several scrap kits shown at top and bottom of this blog and then combined them into the digital scrapbooking page below:![]()
