I was putting some Valentine Candy in a Valentine Dish on my kitchen counter for visitors to snack on.
While I was filling the dish I 
noticed how pretty the candy looked in the dish, and thought it would be fun to make into a valentine embellishment.
So I got out my camera and took this photo. As soon as I took the photo I realized that it was really going to be hard to take the background out so I ran into my study and got a couple of white pieces of paper and retook the photo. (A white background is easier to take out of a photo than a multi-color one!)
Here is what I did next:
Step 1: Once I had the photo of the candy and dish with a white background I loaded it into the Editor Mode in Photoshop Elements.
(Note: it works the same way in Photoshop too!)
I make a duplicate layer and hide the original background layer incase I need it later.
Step 2: Next I select the Magnetic Lasso Tool and went around the dish.
Step 3: 
After the candy and dish are selected hit the Ctrl + J keys and the selection goes on it’s own layer.
See the image to the left.
Now some selections come out perfect, but others are a bit ragged and need to be cleaned up.
So this is what has happened with the candy dish it mostly came out ok but the shadow has made it come out a little ragged in some spots and I will need to clean that up.
Step 4: I get the Erase Tool (using a hard brush at full opacity), and start erasing on the candy dish layer to smooth out the edges.
I go around the whole candy dish and clean up the edges until it looks good.
Once the candy dish is cleaned up I turn off all the other layers, I might also add a drop shadow and then it is ready to added to a digital scrapbooking page.
Step 5: Scrap using your new Valentine Embellishment and other scrapbooking supplies!
Now you have a wonderful digital scrapbooking embellishment to use on your Valentine pages and projects!
