Quick Tip: Filter Tip 6 Previewing Multiple Filters at Once in Photoshop Elements and Photoshop

December 29th, 2009

If you have been following along with the blogs on Filter Tips then you have probably noticed that we have been giving several good tips on using filters in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. Today we want to give you Tip 6 on using filters and previewing multiple filters, instead of only applying one filter at a time.

In photo editing or digital scrapbooking it is fun to use a filter – but even more fun to use multiple filters on an image. But it is nice to know what the multiple filters will do to the image before committing to the changes!

Note: I am demonstrating on Photoshop Elements but it works the same in Photoshop too!12-10-2009 9-15-43 AM

The Filter Gallery Dialog Box is a great way to preview multiple filters on top of each other. For example, if I wanted to run three filters (or more) on an image, I’d have to normally go to the Filter menu three times to apply and see the filter effect individually. But in photo editing or digital scrapbooking I might want to see how multiple filters used together might look before committing to the changes.

Picking filters one by one

However there is a way to look at more Filter effects right in the Filter Gallery Dialog Box. To try this go to Filter>Filter Gallery. This brings up the filter dialog box.

Go to Filter Gallery in Elements or PhotoshopOnce the filter dialog box is open then click the New Effect Layer
icon at the bottom right of the dialog box.

Selecting a new effects layerThen choose a filter from the  the center column, click on the folders to expand your filter choices, and make the adjustments for this filterSelecting a new effects layer and a filter Next, click on the New Effect Layer button (#1) again to add yet another layer. Try a different filter (#2). Now this is what it looks like with 2 different filters applied to your image. If you want to see what it looks like without one of the filters then just click on the eyeball icon to hide that filter (#3)

Applying more filtersKeep adding new effect layers and different filters. Turn the ones you want on or off with the eyeball icon. When you have the image just as you like click the OK button

Adding extra filters in the dialog boxUsing this method then you don’t have to go through all the hassle to see what multiple effects look like one by one through the menu. This way you can do it all right inside the Filter Gallery dialog box!

Then you will return to the regular workspace – in the example above you can see the original image and the one after several filters have been applied to it!
Extra Tip:  Try dragging the filter effect layers on the right above and below each other. It works just like the Layers palette, just click on the effects layer and drag and drop it to the right location. (#1) Changing the position of the filters also changes the look of the image!

Drag and drop filter effects You can also throw away a filter effect layer –just drag it to the trash! (#2)
