Quick Tip: Filter Tip 5 Previewing a Filter Effect in Photoshop and Elements

December 17th, 2009

Want to know what a filter is going to look like before you commit to it?

Previewing filters

In Photoshop or Photoshop Elements – after you have selected your filter then a dialog box will open where you can refine the settings of the filter. Note: that different filters open up in different kinds of dialog boxes depending on the filter. So, if the filter you have chosen filter opens up in the large Filter dialog box, click on the eyeball icon in the Filter Layer box on the right of the dialog to toggle the effects of the filter on and off.

Below when the eyeball is visible the filter effect is also visible.

See Preview in Elements or Photoshop When the eyeball is clicked off and not visible then the original image without the effect is visible

Other Previews on Filters

If the filter opens up in its own small dialog box (like Motion Blur filter does), then it may have a Preview check box instead of an eyeball. Click the box to see what the filter does.
