Quick Tip: Filter Tip 4 Fading Filters in Photoshop Elements

December 9th, 2009

Today’s Quick Tip is learning about helping your filter to have a faded look or less intense look.

Sometimes, you’ll want a specific filter effect on a photo, digital scrapbooking project. But sometimes the filter is too strong and you want that filter to be less dramatic. Photoshop Elements doesn’t offer a Fade command like Photoshop does to solve this problem.

However, there is a way to have this same effect that that is in Photoshop,  but left out in in Photoshop Element.

Here is how you do it in Photoshop Elements.

Copying a layer

First, select your photo or digital scrapbooking supply and simply press Ctrl + J (Mac: Cmd + J) to duplicate your image layer before you apply your filter. Then apply the filter by going to the Filter menu

In this example we will choose to use the Gaussian Blur filter by going to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur.

Applying a filterWhen you press OK, the filter is applied to the duplicate layer, and not the original layer below it.

Lowering the opacity

If you want to produce a a less dramatic effect, just reduce the opacity of the top layer. The more you reduce it, the less of the filtered effect you’ll see on the image. Now you have a way to fade your filter!

using a filter and fading itAbove is the original image (without the filter) and the next image is after using a filter and then reducing the opacity to make a softer, less dramatic effect.

Try out this trick and see how it works with the filters you are using!
