Quick Tip: Adding a Glow to WordArt in Elements

Nov 15th, 2009 by Blog Admin | 0

11-3-2009 7-56-16 PM I was digital scrapbooking, and the scrap kit I was using had papers, embellishments and WordArt—NICE!

I pulled my WordArt onto the digital scrap page and when I saw the dark WordArt on the dark digital paper I wanted to somehow make it stand out more.

It is easy to make WordArt like this stand out by adding a layer style to it. Here are the steps to do this!

11-3-2009 8-40-12 PM

Step 1: Open your digital scrap page in Photoshop Elements, and add your WordArt. Next select the WordArt layer in the Layer Panel.

Step 2: With the WordArt layer selected add a drop shadow, like the soft edge drop shadow and then click the apply button.

Now you WordArt has a drop shadow, in our example it is  hard to see the drop shadow as the digital paper is dark too.  Now the WordArt layer has a layer style with it represented by the fx on the layer.

11-3-2009 9-07-38 PM Step 3: Sometimes it  is hard to see especially when the layer is selected, but on the WordArt layer on the right hand side is a fx button now.

If you click on the fx and a pop-up menu will appear that you can set different settings and personalize your drop shadow.

Step 4: When the pop-up menu 11-3-2009 9-09-00 PM appears use the sliders to adjust the drop shadow. You can use the sliders to adjust the size, distance and opacity.

Try each of the sliders and pick the best adjustments for your project.

Next click on the color chip to get the color picker so you can change the color of your drop shadow.

Step 5: After clicking on the color chip to get the color picker, select a new color other than black. In this example I picked a yellow/gold color in another part of the digital paper background. This would make a contrast on the brown digital paper my WordArt was sitting on. When you are done picking your drop shadow color click on the OK button.

11-3-2009 9-17-41 PM Step 6: In the pop-up menu box, check the glow box. This is where the 11-3-2009 9-25-23 PMmagic begins!

Also click on the Inner Glow box, adjust the size and Opacity with the sliders and pick a color with the color chip.

Next, click on the Outer Glow box, adjust the size and Opacity with the sliders and pick a color with the color chip.

You can see how your settings and adjustments effect your WordArt as you make the adjustments.

After you have picked the settings that makes your WordArt Glow and Pop, then click on the Ok button!

See how making these simple steps really makes my WordArt look fantastic with my digital scrapbooking page!

11-3-2009 9-32-08 PM Now my WordArt has a fun glow around it and that really makes it pop on my scrap page!  So simple to do, but this method makes a jazzy drop shadow for my WordArt!

Here is the “before” I applied this glowing drop shadow, just to remind you how far we have come see the image below:

11-3-2009 9-35-55 PM Here is the “after” when we have applied the glowing drop shadow to the WordArt – see the image below:

Same WordArt – just different layer styles! But what a difference a few settings makes!

Try this fun trick  and see how it works on some of your digital scrapbooking projects too!

Enjoy!
