How do You Picture Thanksgiving? Getting Holiday Digital scrapbooking photos!

Nov 16th, 2009 by Cheri Barlow | 0

What does your Thanksgiving look like? What kind of photos do you take at Thanksgiving time?

NormanRockwell_ThanksgivingPick Does your perfect digital photo for your scrapbooking pages look like a Norman Rockwell painting?

Most likely you have seen (at least a photo of) Norman Rockwell’s “Freedom from Want” painting that first appeared in the 1940’s on The Saturday Evening Post. This painting has burned an image in our minds that our Thanksgiving (Holiday) photos should be taken around the table with the turkey being served.

Many scrappers only take pictures for their scrapbooking project of the Thanksgiving dinner itself, and only capture a small portion of the holiday fun.

While I do admit photos around the table can be a fantastic scrapbooking photo opportunity – it certainly isn’t the only great photography opportunity that Thanksgiving offers!

Make digital scrapbooking pages of other things too! When looking for photos for digital scrapbooking look for lots of places and times great shots happen. Like before you actually serve the dinner, certainly food preparations add lots of photo opportunities. People roasting, baking, and cooking together. Family and friends laughing together and chatting while cooking. The cooks in their aprons – matching, not matching! New and old recipes made and tried.

For example I made this digital scrapbooking page from photos I took of my daughter making apple candles this was hours before the meal, then I took more images of the apple candles all finished and when she set the table and put the candles out. I didn’t stop there, I finally took a photo of the candle lit and with some of the food being served around it. I liked photos for a scrapbooking theme of the progress of the  apple candles.  This theme was great digital scrapbooking page to add to my Thanksgiving album a well!

What about taking photos of people watching Holiday Sports?! Children playing and scampering around the house? Teens playing video games – gaming is getting very interesting to watch these days as people are standing up and moving all around to play – these activities offer some interesting photos! Happy holiday memories happen all over the place and it is great to capture more of the fun so you can put these things in the scrapbooking pages too!

Scrap Thanksgiving "Firsts" What about taking photos of “Thanksgiving firsts” for your scrapbooking projects. For example, a new baby’s first Thanksgiving, a daughter/son’s first time to cook the turkey, and a grandfather’s first time to play Wii or other video games!  The scrapper should take some pictures of these “firsts” and put the photos into a scrapbooking album of Thanksgiving “firsts”!

In this image, I scrapped my daughter and son-in-law’s first Thanksgiving they hosted! It was so much fun – read about it and Turkey ideas in this blog: Let’s Talk Turkey! Digital Scrapbooking the Turkey Experience!

Here are some extra tips for Taking Thanksgiving photos:

  • Make sure your digital camera’s battery is charged
  • If you will be busy – leave disposable cameras around to get others to help with the picture taking too!
  • Give a teenager a camera and a list of photos to look for and ask them to make sure and cover this events
