Question: Dear Ms. Digi Know, I am constantly filling selections and
layers with colors when I am working on digital scrapbooking projects. I have to go through so many mouse steps so can you give me any shortcut keys that would save me time?
Sincerely, wasting to much time!
Answer: Hello wasting time, Save time and use shortcut keys instead! You can absolutely use shortcut keys to fill selections and layers with colors when you are working on digital scrapbooking projects. Instead of clicking on the move tool and then the layer, then the Paint Bucket tool and back to the layer with your mouse (bet you are tired just reading that!) you can quickly fill a layer or selection with the Foreground color on the color chip tool by pressing Alt + Backspace (Mac: Option + Backspace). Now so simple! Below is an example of using this shortcut key to fill a selection, after making the select hit the Alt-Backspace key and the Foreground color filled the selection!
Remember the foreground color is the top color chip, and the background color is the bottom one.
If you want to fill something with the current Background color on the color chip tool, press Ctrl + Backspace (Mac: Command +Backspace).![]()
Remember save more time by clicking on the double headed arrow to switch the foreground and background colors or use the keyboard shortcut X
To turn the foreground and background to black and white click on the little icon of the black and white colors or use the keyboard shortcut D. Now you are really save time and not clicking around with your mouse so much!
Does this tip work for Photoshop Users too?
Good news these same Shortcuts work for Photoshop users too! Just use the shortcut keys for the PC or Mac versions, and you are good to go!
