How to get cute pictures of Your Uncooperative Child – A Surprise Visitor Gets a Smile!

November 5th, 2009

Taking Family Photos I don’t know about any of you mom’s out there but to me family picture day is one of the most tiring, complicated days of my year.

First of all finding a day that we can all get together and find time to get ready, travel to the place we want the pictures taken, and then spend the time to take the pictures is nearly impossible.

I love outdoor pictures (particularly in the fall) so I am always worried if the weather will be picture perfect and if there will still be beautiful leaves on the trees. Then, as the mom, I have to try to get clothes together for the six, four of whom don’t care what they wear, and one teenage daughter that does care very much what she wears. With all of this, I still must make sure that they coordinate at least a little bit.

I have to be sure not to combine too many stripes, patterns, graphics etc. The colors need to look right together and with the background. I almost always start with one shirt and end up buying five new ones to match it so it becomes quite an expense. Can anyone relate to this? I doubt I am alone.

Family Photos Well, I just went through this whole process last week. Fortunately my niece married a wonderful guy that happens to be an avid, experienced photographer so at least finding a fantastic photographer isn’t my nightmare anymore. Because of all the challenges that we face during picture day I thought I might share a delightful “picture day story” in the hopes of brightening your day and possibly helping you put a new spin on getting the perfect pictures of your children.

We have an adorable, spunky, quick witted, stubborn, nine year old girl that we couldn’t love more. I bet some of you can relate to this also. Just to give you a preview of her personality I will tell you that last year on picture day she informed me that she would either let me “comb her hair” or she would “smile for the camera”. Luckily the photographer, her cousins husband, also has quite the way of charming her so, the pictures were darling, combed hair and all!

the surprise vistor is a cow So, this year we went up into the mountains to take our pictures. I have a good friend that lives on a beautiful piece of land in the area we drove to so we went to her home and up onto the mountain behind her yard to take the pictures. Her son is raising a calf. It is the cutest little calf I do have to admit. But to my nine year old daughter, it is the best pet anyone could ever have. (Needless to say she doesn’t understand why he is raising the Calf!) She couldn’t take her eyes off of that calf. The calf was mad that we had invaded it’s privacy and was mooing, mooing, and mooing, which she thought was hilarious.

The cow gets smiles When we went to take pictures she wasn’t about to smile or pose or even look pleasant and so…I promised her that if she would take some family and personal pictures that were smiley that I would let our photographer take a picture of her with the Cow. Why didn’t I think of that in the first place. I couldn’t get her to stop smiling. The thought of having some “cow time” was like handing most children the key to a candy store.

So we have amazing pictures of our nine year old, but wait until you see the pictures with the Calf. I don’t know why I didn’t just let her have her individual pictures with the cow in the first place.

Digitally scraping the photosTaking these photos and Digital Scrapbooks and More’s Autumn Days Digital Scrapbooking Kit, which is my favorite, I made a digital scrapbooking page to save the memories.

This paper with it’s embellishments are perfect for this unquie memory, take a look at the image on the left.

On the way home in the car my daughter asked me what kind of a cow makes chocolate milk?!

Now that was such a cute saying that I had to scrap for the next page in my Fall Scrapbooking album!
