It seems a bit early but as I walk in the department stores and feel the crisp air outside I do feel like the Holiday Season is upon us. Thanksgiving is a Holiday that I really enjoy when I prepare for it. What I mean is that sometimes when Thanksgiving comes and as I usually host a dinner party for many family members in my home, I start to panic if I have not prepared. So, this year I am already preparing.
A month or so ago I took my children into the mountains and collected fall leaves. When we brought them home we made an assortment of many crafts from the leaves (see this article: Fall Crafts for Kids and Digital Scrapbooking Ideas ). One of my favorites is the place mats that we make
for our Thanksgiving table using the leaves we had gathered and pressed. Then when they are pressed and dried we glue on a colored sheet of paper. Next we cover the paper and the leaves with clear contact paper and cut the placemat into the shape we like. The placemats can also be used to put a center piece on, or if we want to we can make a place mat for each guest.
Another way I like to prepare is by making name tags for seating at the table. This can be done by using one of the Fall Digital Scrapbooking Kits that you can buy at Digital Scrapbooks and More’s Scrap Shop. I love their Fall Kits because the colors are so beautiful and are already coordinated for your ease of use. I choose a couple of my favorite papers and
print the name of the guest on it.
You can vary the size and style of writing to fit your taste and the style of get together that you are hosting. I then cut a piece of cardstock the size that I would like, fold it in half so that it will stand by itself on the table and then I paste the paper with the name on it that has been carefully cut to fit on the cardstock.
Then I add a leaf or flower embellishment to decorate the tag. I enjoy this activity because I can do it well in advance of the party.
It is also a fun idea to use these same coordinating papers to make invitations
to the get-together. I often decorate the invitations at the same time that I make the name tags in order to save time.
Again I usually use a piece of cardstock as a backing for the paper that I have chosen. I then print on the paper the information that I want included on the invitation.
I often cut the cardstock so that it is larger than the paper and then I place the paper on the cardstock and use embellishments to decorate the invitation.
Thank you notes may also be made in this way at the same time. This saves time after Thanksgiving when you are already knee deep in Christmas.
With these simple tasks taken care of, I now can concentrate on the menu and other details of the party.
Happy Thanksgiving with all the Fixins!
Denise
