It was a particularly cold morning today and as I rolled out of bed at 5:30 am. I felt groggy as I woke my husband up and I heard him mumble something grouchy to himself. I called to my four children to get out of bed and come upstairs to fold the papers for the family paper route that has to be delivered before 6:30 am and just as I had expected I had a slow response.
By 5:45 am everyone was in their places and we were
out the door to deliver the newspapers to our friends and neighbors. By 6:30 we were all back in the house and grumpy as could be. I started to make whole wheat pancakes and as I poured the batter, a smile spread across my face, when I looked down at the pan what I saw was a pumpkin pancake. Yep, clear as could be a pumpkin was cooking up in that frying pan, all it lacked was a cute little face.
So, I pulled my bag of chocolate chips out and made the cutest pumpkin pancakes. I called my nine year old daughter over to take a look and her smile and enthusiasm lit up the room as she announced to everyone what she saw in the pan.
Next I thought if I could make a sort of pumpkin pancake – then why not try for a ghost pancake too!
We put chocolate chip eyes on again. Everyone was really laughing and having fun. The kitchen was really a warm and exciting place to be. All gathered around for the next pancake creation!
I thought that I would make more pumpkin pancakes only I would color the pancake batter to look more like real pumpkin!
I divided my batter into two other bowls and mixed yellow and red food
coloring to make orange in a bowl. Then I took the smaller bowl and scooped some batter out and mixed green food coloring into that bowl.
Now I poured the orange batter into a pan to make the base of the pumpkin and topped off with the green batter to make the pumpkin stem!
The kids were delighted, the kitchen was filled with sheer excitement and
anticipation of our pumpkin pancake creations!
We made at least one for each person in the family and some even wanted two or more!
We even got fancy and added a few candy corn, with the chocolate chips to make the pumpkins faces!
Next time I might add some real canned pumpkin, cinnamon, and cloves to the batter so it will tasted more like a pumpkin as well as look it!
The morning was off to a great start! Even my teen-agers loved it! I just got a bunch of “parent points”. I felt happy too!
T
he mood of the morning was saved by a pancake. Who would have guess it!
It is amazing how one little happy moment can change the mood of a whole family and maybe even change the mood of an individual person’s day.
Just think how excited these kids will be when they see the pictures of our morning scrapped on the Halloween Spider Book Digital Scrapbooking Kit 2 with 12×12″ paper from Digital Scrapbooks and More’s Scrap Shop.
I can have these pictures scrapped and ready before the kids get home from school. I will scrap them, frame them, and put them in the window seal for everyone to enjoy. It brings a sense of closeness to our family when we look at the pictures and realize that in spite of our grouchy or unhappy moments, that we have some pretty great times together as a family too.
I enjoy taking pictures each holiday season, scrapping them and framing them. I sometimes bring out the pictures from years past so that we can remember the fun things that we have done together. I think that it also helps us to realize that “It’s the Small Moments, that make Life Big”.
My hope is that as this Holiday Season approaches that each of us will celebrate the small moments and savor them by taking pictures that we can cherish for many years to come.
Have a happy Fall,
Denise
