Scrapping the Harvest

October 15th, 2009

DSM_Garden2_ScrapPage1_400 Many of our gardens are coming to the end of the season and we are reaping the benefits of our labors, big bright orange pumpkins, red tomatoes, and more!

The end of the growing season can be wonderful, as it is a time to pick and store much of the things we have planted.

I remember as a small child our mother asking us to pick the winter squash and store it in the basement to enjoy throughout the winter months. We would also be asked to pick all the green tomatoes and wrap them in newspaper and put them into a box in the basement so the frost wouldn’t ruin them.  Then during the next few months, our mother would bring a few green tomatoes up from the basement to place them in the window so they would ripen. This would let us enjoy tomatoes from our garden till January!

During this fall harvest time our mother would have us pick the pumpkins and select the ones that we wanted for Halloween Jack-o’-Lanterns, and even roast the seeds, turning them into a great treat. Read this article to get a pumpkin seed recipe:Roasting Pumpkin Seeds a Fun Family Activity. Also, my brothers and I would harvest the sunflower seeds too. I remember cutting off the big flowers and pulling the seeds out to dry. But the best part is that we would take the long stems and build forts! We could use the sunflower stems as the structure for our forts and pile up leaves and such, to form the walls of our fort.  It was a child’s wonderland where we could use our imaginations to take the things from the garden and “live off the land!” Or at least eat some yummy carrots and tomatoes that still needed to be harvested!

I wish I had photos of all these Harvest rituals that my family did when I was young.  I would love to share these things with my children especially as organic gardening is so popular these days! And I think the stories of sunflower forts really needs to be seen to be believed! I must not be the only one that wishes they would take more photos of their garden – read this article: Scrap More Than The Harvest!
