Make Your Own Magnets with Digital Scrapbooking Supplies and Photos

August 9th, 2009

Yesterday’s blog gave instructions on making your own 8.5 x 11″ magnets! But even though these large magnets are great for converting entire digital scrapbooking pages into magnets, or using as “school locker wallpaper”, you may not always want to make magnets that big. So, that said, today’s blog is all about making smaller digital scrapbooking magnets!

Make Digital Scrapbooking Magnets In some ways the instructions are the same as yesterday’s blog, but believe it or not, smaller magnets have a few more steps involved and can take a little more work to create!

But like most crafts, the effort is always worth it when you see the exciting outcome of your little creations! So, let’s get started:

Follow These 4 Tips for Making Small (or Regular-Sized) Digital Scrapbooking Magnets:

Tip 1: Select your magnet sheets. When creating smaller magnets, you have several options when it comes to the magnet sheets you choose. You can use the full size magnet sheets, as mentioned in yesterday’s blog on how to use and get these type of magnet sheets.  These larger magnet sheets can be printed on your home printer, as one side is paper-like and the other side is a magnet.

linerAnother type of magnet sheet that you can use for this type of project is the pre-made smaller magnet sheets that come in various sizes, like: 6 x 9” 5 x 7”, 4 x 6” or 2.5 x 3.5”.

With these types of magnet sheets, you just peel off the adhesive liner (on one side of the magnet) and it reveals a sticky surface to place the printed paper design onto (obviously, you will have to print out your design, cut it to fit the magnet, then place on this sticky surface).

If you want to use this type of “peel off” smaller magnet sheet, they seem to sell them everywhere!  I bought some the other day just at the pharmacy! But you should also be able to buy these magnet sheets at craft stores, discount stores, etc. You can also buy them online too!

Here is one online resource for this type of smaller peel-off magnet sheets found at Office Depot Online. This packet has 2 sheets of 6 x 9”  for $2.99.

Truthfully, it doesn’t really matter what type of magnet sheet you end up choosing, the only thing that is important is that you know and plan your magnet design all around the magnet dimensions.

Now you have your magnet it is time to make your magnet design!

Design Your Smaller Magnets in Photoshop or Elements!

Design your magnets in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements Tip 2: Plan your Design!  If you selected the large (8.5 x 11″) Magnet Sheets, then make your New Document size at 8.5 x11″ within Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.

If you chose the smaller magnet sheets, then set your New Document dimensions to match the magnet sheets dimensions.

Next, open your photos, digital scrapbooking frames, embellishments, and other digital scrapbooking supplies and design your magnet! Depending on the size of your magnet and your design, you might be able to add several magnet designs onto your sheet.

In this example, we made 4 different small digital scrapbooking magnets on one sheet. I then printed these 4 magnets on one single piece of large magnet paper and then just cut around the design.

Use Digital Scrapbooking Frames for Quick Scrapping!

Use Digital Scrapbooking Frames to save time Tip 3: Use digital scrapbooking frames!  Look though your digital scrapbooking kits to find digital scrapbooking frames and then just slip your photos underneath! Instant magnets. Using a digital frame adds additional design around photos used for magnets and gives the illusion of a real photo frame!

Not to mention, using a square, circle, rectangle, or oval digital frame makes cutting the magnet easy!

Irregular Shapes Make Artistic Magnet Designs!

Tip 4: Get Creative and Make Irregular Shaped Designs! One exciting thing about these smaller magnets and not printing them to the edge of the paper is to allow them to have irregular shapes. It is fun to have magnets that follow interesting irregular shapes like a flower!

Make your Magnets irregular shapes Take any of your digital scrapbooking supplies and design an interesting or unusual digital scrapbooking magnet.

However, if your magnet has an unusual shape, you may need to be a little careful when you go to cut them!

When picking out your magnet designs, try to choose a theme and stick with coordinating supplies or looks for the best results and best looking magnet set for your fridge!

Digital Scrapbooking Magnets are easy with a little trainingUsing your digital scrapbooking skills to make magnets is a great way to add some personalization to your fridge (or locker, or whatever else you decide to add a few magnets to).
