How to Make and Add a Digital Scrapbooking Page or Album to your Kindle Reader!
One of the innovative ways to use the New Amazon Kindle DX is to use it to hold your digital scrapbooking page or albums.
The Kindle is a great way to view my digital scrapbooking albums that I want to keep digital versions (and not print-out). Or even if I do have the Scrap Page that I’ve printed, keeping a digital version on the Kindle is a handy way for me to carry my digital scrapbooking pages and easily show off them off to family and friends (without having to lug-around a computer!).
Here are the advantages of putting your digital scrapbooking pages and albums on a Kindle DX Reader:
- Saves money – the cost of all the paper and ink you spend when printing-out your digital scrapbooking page on your home printer is a huge expense. Obviously, not printing your pages, but keeping them easily available to be viewed or shared lets you enjoy your digital creations without throwing money down the drain on paper, ink, and other supplies. However, if you want a printed version of your digital scrapbooking page– you can always have both- a printed one and a Kindle PDF version too!
- Takes up less space – I have a whole hallway closet and a guestroom closet filled with photos and scrapbooking albums – I really don’t have space for one more book! With the Kindle, I can put many different photos or digital scrapbooking albums on my Kindle! Wow- I’ve probably compacted a whole closet worth of stuff into one small reading device! It’s truly helped me clean up so much of the clutter!
- Easy to take places and show people. Unless someone goes through my hall closet and gets a scrapbooking or photo album down from the shelf, then my scrap or photo books aren’t viewed often. But with the Kindle, I take it with me on car trips and read with it on the plane… showing friends and family all my digital photos and digital scrapbooking albums both easy and convenient. I can go to the park and watch my nephew play baseball, and in the breaks, show friends my digital scrapbooking pages then too (which is always a great way to start conversation with other moms and make new friends as well)!
But because this is an honest product review of the Kindle, here are few down sides:
- Black and White Screen: The Kindle display screen is not color, but black and white. This isn’t the best way to view photos and digital scrapbooking pages or albums that are made for color. I know this is a bit of a disappointment when we design our digital creations to be colorful, but at least it can still show photos and the design of a digital scrapbooking project… It does have gray scale, so it will show some of the detail. Of course, you can make a digital scrapbooking page, save it in color, and when Amazon puts out a color Kindle (someday in the near future, I hope!), then all the PDFs files and digital scrapbooking pages should be able to transfer to newer versions of the Kindle as well! Also, if I bring my Kindle DX to my Sister’s house and if she wants to see one of the albums in color, then I can plug my Kindle into her computer and transfer my album to her computer for a better viewing. I know the color thing is a disadvantage when viewing my digital scrapbooking pages (that I’ve turned into PDF files) but on the other hand, they will be ready when the technology catches up and color is available!
- Detail and Quality of images: This is like the black and white thing – not yet, but will be coming. For reading and general images it is fine, but for more details within digital scrapbooking pages, their quality isn’t up there quite yet.
Ok, saying all that, here are some recommendations for putting your digital scrapbooking pages or albums on your Kindle DX:
Tip 1: First turn your digital scrapbooking page or album into a PDF file format. One simple way to make a digital scrapbooking page in either Photoshop or Photoshop Elements into a PDF is to simply go to: Menu > File > Save As > PDF format.
You can also make digital scrapbooking pages or albums if you have the Adobe Acrobat full featured program. There are also some other ways to do this, but these will have to wait for another blog!
Tip 2: If you want to match the layout of the Kindle reader, use digital scrapbooking pages that are 8.5 x 11″. Or if you plan to rotate the Kindle to the side, then format your digital scrapbookint projects to 11 x 8.5″.
Digital Scrapbooks and More has many 8.5 x 11″ (or 11 x 8.5″) supplies available at the Scrap Shop that make it easy to create digital scrapbooking pages at this size!
Also, our training talks about some tricks on making 12 x12” digital scrapbooking pages fit into the 8.5 x 11 paper size! Check the Getting Started Training for Digital Scrapbooking for more help doing this!
Tip 3: Put your PDF digital scrapbooking page on your Kindle DX.
One way you can do this is to plug your Kindle DX into your computer and transfer the PDF file to the Kindle.
Another way is to email the PDF file to your special email (made by Amazon for your Kindle) and Amazon will make it available to your Kindle.
(Note: This last way you may be charged a fee by Amazon).
Now show everyone your great digital scrapbooking pages!
Once you have set up your digital scrapbooking pages in your Kindle Reader, go ahead and show them to everyone!
Happy Scrapping and try this new trick for using your Kindle to show off your Digital Scrapbooking Pages!
