What's Happening

Use the Amazon Kindle for A More Green Digital Scrapbooking Experience!

Jul 18th, 2009 by Cheri Barlow | 1

I am trying to go “greener”… especially when I look at my bookcases overflowing with books and PDF print-outs in ugly binders all over my office!

More than just having a lot of books, my biggest problem is actaully all the PDF files, guides, or E-Books I end up printing! These days, so many things come as PDFs – manuals, newsletters, instructions, and more! I like that everyone is going green and making all these things available as a  PDF, instead of printing on paper, and I want to do my part to help the enviroment and waste less paper… but can I be honest here? I’ll admit it: I don’t like reading at my computer! I want to sit in my comfortable chair, with my feet up and resting on it’s coordinating ottoman, with a “well lit light” by my side!

So what do I do? Do I print-out all my PDF files- such as manuals, newsletters, and other items that come in PDF format and continue putting them in more plastic binders (and read in my comfortable chair), or do I sit uncomfortably in front of my computer? But the “green” PDF file is not green and environmentally-consciousness once I decide to hit the “print” button. Not to mention, the printing itself ends up being very expensive, so much money is wasted in the paper, ink, and in binders to hold of it. My bookcases are overflowing with these binders – holding printed PDFs!

The Digital Scrapbooks and More Training Guides are an example of a “green” product. All paper-documents (the Newsletter, Articles, Step-by-Steps, and Cheat Sheets) are all PDFs, and save the lives of a lot of trees. But man, how do I resist the urge to stay away from printing AND still sit in my comfortable reading chair?

Read Digital Scrapbooking blog, News, Articles, Step-by-Step Training Guides on the New Kindle DX ReaderSo how did I solve this problem? I got an Amazon Kindle DX eBook Reader!

What is a Kindle, you might ask?

Well let me explain: For one, I think that the best way to describe a Kindle, is that I think a Kindle is what an IPod is for music …but the Kindle is for books! Yes, it is a light portable e-Reader that can hold books, magazines, newspapers, PDF files, and even blogs!

This is perfect for me! I can put all those books I love on my Kindle DX eReader; I can also put all my PDFs on it too! I can even put our blog on my Kindle reader – yes, Digital Scrapbooks and More blog is one of the most popular hobby Blogs that you too can get from Amazon to read on your Kindle!

Over the next few blogs I will try to cover more about what the Kindle is, how it can help the digital scrapbooker, and how you can add our Articles, News, Step-by-Steps, Cheat Sheets and Blog to a Kindle Reader too!

Special Note: You can read our Blog on the Kindle!

This first blog article on the Kindle DX will go over some of the features, in case you are not familiar with this e-Reading Device!

BeforeDSAM_Kindle_Articles_250 I begin this product review, I must mention that there are 3 versions of the Kindle and the only one I will review is the Kindle DX. The reason for this is because this one really solves my big problem …needing something that easily handles PDFs!  I really wanted to read them in my comfortable chair and while the other Kindle readers could have Amazon convert your PDFs (at cost) – I wanted one that I could load my PDFs directly to my reading device… and I didn’t want to be charged either! So, the Kindle DX was a clear winner in my mind, and this is the Kindle model I will be reviewing in this blog (and the next few blogs).

Here is the list of the Kindle DX Features that Amazon provides:

· Slim: Just over 1/3 of an inch, as thin as most magazines

· Carry Your Library: Holds up to 3,500 books, periodicals, and documents

· Beautiful Large Display: 9.7″ diagonal e-ink screen reads like real paper; boasts 16 shades of gray for clear text and sharp images

· Auto-Rotating Screen: Display auto-rotates from portrait to landscape as you turn the device so you can view full-width maps, graphs, tables, and Web pages

· Built-In PDF Reader: Native PDF support allows you to carry and read all of your personal and professional documents on the go

· Wireless: 3G wireless lets you download books right from your Kindle DX, anytime, anywhere; no monthly fees, no annual contracts, and no hunting for Wi-Fi hotspots

· Books In Under 60 Seconds: You get free wireless delivery of books in less than 60 seconds; no PC required

· Long Battery Life: Read for days without recharging

· Read-to-Me: With the text-to-speech feature, Kindle DX can read newspapers, magazines, blogs, and books out loud to you, unless the book’s rights holder made the feature unavailable

· Big Selection, Low Prices: Over 285,000 books; New York Times Best Sellers and New Releases are only $9.99, unless marked otherwise

· More Than Books: U.S. and international newspapers including the New York Times and Wall Street Journal, magazines including The New Yorker and Time, plus popular blogs, all auto-delivered wirelessly

Here are a list of reasons why I really like the Kindle DX:

· Many of the e-books I want are significantly cheaper as an e-book than their paper versions! (which also helps pay for the Kindle!)

· I save my extremely-limited bookcase space

· I save money on printing

· I have gone “green” since I am not printing e-books, training guides, blog articles, etc!

· Looking and reading PDFs was a big deal for me (and is the main reason I went for the Kindle DX model) because now I can effortlessly read all of the Digital Scrapbooking PDFs- like training guides (Step-By-Step Guides, Cheat Sheets, etc!).

· As mentioned before, I can read everything in my favorite chair and if I decide that I want another book , magazine, the Digital Scrapbooks and More Blog, or a Digital Scrapbooks and More article, then I don’t even have to get out of my comfy chair to get it! I just switch to that book , article, or blog- right on the Kindle reader!

While I really like the Kindle DX,  there are  two down points for me: The first one is the price, at $489 the Kindle DX is very expensive.  But when I think about how much ink I buy to print out my PDFs, and also, if I remember the fact that many of the books are much more expensive as physical books, then I relax about the price a bit. I save money by buying the books I want as cheaper, e-book Kindle versions, and truthfully, in about a year (for me at least), the Kindle will pay off and begin to save me money!

The second down point for me, is that the Kindle screen display is only available as black and white. I really like color, and with modern TVs and computers obviously displaying in color, this is a very big down point for me.

Read our Digital Scrapbooking Blog on the Kindle! However, the gray scale does help. I will be especially happy when colored Kindle screens become available, but in the meantime, I think I can get by with the black and white display, especially when it does show pictures and images. And really, many books I own don’t have pictures anyway… but I must confess, I always like it when they do!

Well, for me, getting the Kindle DX eReader was the first step to solving my overflowing bookcases problems! Now I must unload my overflowing shelves and replace it all with one small Kindle! YAY!

Check back tomorrow when this blog will review how the Kindle can help the digital scrapbooker by adding our Articles, News, Step-by-Steps, Cheat Sheets, and the Digital Scrapbooks and More Blog to a Kindle Reader!

Happy Scrapping and “Go Green” with the Kindle!
