Unlike posed portrait photos, with the candid photo, the photographer doesn’t get to direct the person being photographed. The real skill of a great candid photographer is being patient, watching, observing and really just waiting for the perfect moment when the person(s) and nature comes together for the perfect photo!
Here are 3 tips to help take better candid photos!
Tip 1: Use a telephoto zoom lens to shoot unobserved candid pictures from farther away. It is very nice to get up close and personal when taking good photos.
However, if you have a camera with a fixed lens then you would have to be so close to the people you are photographing that the shot might be influenced by you because you are now part of the action. Being further away lets the scene develop without people feeling self-conscious and often you can capture more intriguing intimate photos.
Tip 2: Set up your camera ahead of time, putting it on a tripod, checking the lighting, and have everything ready for that perfect shot!
To catch those very special candid shots by being alert and ready! When the photo op comes up, then you have to have your camera ready to fire off and catch the shot! If you think a good picture might be coming then start taking the photos and see if you can capture the event as it is happening and if you have a camera positioned, set up and ready then you should be able to get some treasured candid photos! A fast shutter speed can also be a helpful way to have your camera set up and ready to go too!
Tip 3: Exercise your powers of observations. Wait for the right moment and learn to anticipate what might happen, and then take the photo when it does happen! Parents probably do this already!
When you see something like your child playing , anticipate what might happen next, then get ready for that moment that would make a wonderful candid photo.
When photographing in public places use some common sense when photographing strangers, especially children – it can be a sensitive area so be aware of your setting and be companionate to others when taking your candid shot, even if the photo is irresistible!
