All About Father’s Day!
Last night I found myself wondering when Father’s Day is. My husband thought that it was probably the 2nd Sunday in June. I didn’t think he was right so I looked it up and discovered a little bit of trivia that was interesting to me and so I thought I would share it with you.
I simply googled Father’s Day and that pulled up instantly the answer to my question. Father’s Day will be celebrated on June 21, 2009. Now I don’t have to worry about it sneaking up on me. I also found out how Father’s Day became a National holiday. According to www.loveyoufather.com a woman named Sonora Smart was listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909 and decided that her Father, who had raised her and her sibling after her mother passed away, deserved to be honored in a special way also. Her father William Jackson Smart was first honored at a celebration for fathers on June 19th, 1910 in Spokane Washington.
A National Father’s Day Committee was formed in New York City in 1926 and Congress recognized Father’s Day for the first time in 1956.
President Nixon made the holiday permanent in 1966 and set the date for the third Sunday in June.
So, now that I know I have three weeks until Father’s Day, I know I have time to be a little creative. My sister-in-law made my mother-in-law the most touching scrapbook I’ve ever seen. It was very personal and I didn’t read it but I looked through it and was so touched at the type of memories she had included in it that I thought any mother or father would be a very lucky recipient to receive such a gift. I am going to digitally scrapbook mine, it will save a lot of time and money to do so. Each page she made had a theme. For example “What I remember about playing with you”. Then, she went on to describe the games her mother had made up, and how much she enjoyed the time her mother had spent playing with her and her siblings. Another topic was “What you taught me about Prayer”, and another “How you taught me to be a good friend”, or “How you influenced me with you hard work ethic”. So you and I could individualize these topics to the ones that fit our relationships with our dads. We could write a caption such as the ones that I have shared, and then below it write a memory, a story, or a quote that goes along with the topic. Pictures could be included but are not necessary with this great gift. I am going to use the digital paper and embellishments from Digital Scrapbooks and More and then I am going to print it out on my home printer. I am going to put the pages in page protectors and then put them into a nice binder to give to my Father. You might want to do it this way or have it professionally printed. Anyway, I love this idea and hope you might be able to use it to. Remember that the best gift you can give is the gift of self.
