I decided that my husband, Tom, and I were going to carve pumpkins the other day and ditch the typical routine of: coming home from work, eating dinner, watching Americas Funniest Home Videos, and then going to bed. I was surprised to find that Tom was really excited about it; he thought it would be fun! I wasn’t sure how Tom would react to the idea, since we both hadn’t carved a pumpkin since we were children; but I was happily surprised when he was really excited!
We got started a little late, and as 7 PM rolled around, I began to get nervous. Thoughts raced through my mind as the clock ticked: How long does it even take to carve a pumpkin? What if we are up late doing this and don’t get to bed on time? I don’t want to be miserable tomorrow at work if this takes forever and we don’t get much sleep… Maybe we should just carve one pumpkin together to save some time, instead of doing our own pumpkin? Or maybe we should even skip tonight, and just carve pumpkins tomorrow when we have more time…
And as my pointless, nervous worrying began, I even started to ask Tom some these questions. And the more I asked, the more I whined, the more I could see his enthusiasm about what was supposed to be a fun holiday activity, starting to fade. And it made me realize that I just needed to let go. I needed to just let go of the useless worrying, and give up trying to control the situation- and just commit to having fun! Right there I decided we were going to carve each of our pumpkins however we wanted, and we would just do it… no matter how long it took! And you know what? Once I let go of all my nonsense-stress, you would not even believe how much fun we had!!!
I brought out my digital camera and took pictures of the entire process. I took photos as we drew out “potential” faces for our pumpkins on a piece of paper. Tom must have drawn 10 different faces, and I drew one. The first one I drew was it. I decided to draw a pumpkin winking, with matching big grin. Tom decided his “final pumpkin face” was going to be a surprise and kept his carving a secret until he was finished.
After lots of scooping, carving, and two (non-serious) knife-cuts later, I had created a drunken-pumpkin with a lopsided smile and one eye half closed. It
was so hilarious that we even took some photos of it with pumpkin goo and seeds coming out of its mouth! It truly looked as though my pumpkin had just barfed. I know it was kind of crude, but it was so funny that we had to do it. And Tom’s pumpkin was a carving of me (well, so he said!). It had long eyelashes, big lips, and was winking too. The main difference between his pumpkin and mine was that his was actually good! But it didn’t matter, my pumpkin was awesome too, and all of it was so much fun. We both had a blast and we both laughed so hard throughout the entire pumpkin-carving process.
We had such a good time, and I was so excited when I downloaded all the photos to my computer. We took so many great shots! I was so glad that I took lots of photos throughout the activities, not just one or two of us smiling at the end like I usually do.
One of my favorite photos of the evening is one where I asked my husband to hold both of our dogs in front of one of the pumpkins we were going to carve. Usually, it’s almost impossible to get them to look at the camera- and I got them both looking straight ahead into the camera, and a gorgeous grin on my husband’s face on the first shot! It was so awesome!
I also took a photo of my husband and our two pumpkins after we carved them.
I asked him to sit on the bench on our front porch and smile, and just as I snapped the shot, one of my puppies, Bebe, jumped up onto the window and you can see her in the corner of the shot. It was so funny, so cute, and so unexpected! When my mom saw the picture she told me that Bebe looks like a little ghost lurking in the corner of the picture. And she’s right… she kind of does!
Either way, it goes to show, that even though a picture may be worth a thousand words, there still can be so much that may be left unsaid.
An activity as simple as carving pumpkins can be so special, and it seems so wasted if you can’t even hang on to some of the funny moments or phrases that made the moment so great.
Bring your digital photos to life by digitally scrapping your special memories if only so you can remember how much fun you had… and as a reminder as to why you need to do it next year!!
